cs2 -dedicated -console +game_type 0 +game_mode 1 +map de_dust2
The hyphenated items are executable flags. The +name value items set console variables during startup. This combination starts dedicated-server mode, keeps administration in a console, selects a game-mode pair, and loads the first map. Add networking, player-capacity, or remote-console options only after this minimal command works.

CS2 reads startup arguments before the server begins accepting players. Two syntaxes are important:
- Hyphen flags, such as
-dedicatedor-ip, change how the executable starts or what service it exposes. - Plus assignments, written as
+<console variable> <argument>, set a console variable as the process launches. Valve documents this form for console variables, while Steam notes that not every console command can be converted into a launch option.
Do not treat a launch command as a complete configuration system. CS2 also reads server.cfg and mode-specific configuration files. A value supplied at startup can therefore be changed later, especially when a map or mode configuration is loaded.

The minimum dedicated-server command
The baseline command uses four functional pieces. Keep them together while diagnosing a new installation:
| Argument | Role | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
-dedicated |
Runs CS2 as a dedicated server rather than a normal client. | The process reaches a server console and does not launch the interactive game client. |
-console |
Uses console mode, which is useful for headless administration. | Startup messages and command output are visible in the server console. |
+game_type 0 |
Selects the game-type number. | Confirm that the numeric value is valid for the current CS2 build. |
+game_mode 1 |
Selects the game-mode number within that game type. | Check the effective mode after the map loads, not only the initial command line. |
+map de_dust2 |
Loads the first map. | The console should report the expected map and finish loading it. |
The numbers in game_type and game_mode are a pair; changing one without checking the other can produce an unintended ruleset. Valve’s game-mode reference and its current mode table are the authority for valid combinations. Updates can add, remove, or remap available modes, so do not assume that a number used by an older guide remains correct.

-dedicated
This is the switch that tells the executable to operate as a dedicated server. Without it, a command that contains a map or game-mode variable may still be interpreted as a client launch.
-console
Console mode is practical for a machine without a desktop session and for administrators who want to see startup errors directly. Keep the console open during the first launch so you can distinguish a rejected argument from a later configuration override.
Rank #2
-dev
-dev enables developer messages. Use it temporarily when you need additional diagnostic output; it is not a substitute for checking the effective cvars after a map change.
-insecure
This starts the server without Valve Anti-Cheat. It changes the server’s security posture and is appropriate only for testing or private setups where that trade-off is intentional. Do not add it to a public server simply because another setup guide includes it.
Map and game-mode parameters
Starting on a specific map
+map <mapname> chooses the map loaded at startup. Use the map’s current internal name, such as de_dust2, and watch the console for a successful load. A typo can leave the server at a different map or stop the startup sequence before the server is ready.
Choosing the ruleset
+game_type <number> and +game_mode <number> work together. Check both values against Valve’s current game-mode documentation for the build you are running. The same map can behave differently under different mode pairs, so a correct map name alone does not prove that the intended rules are active.

Map aliases
CS2 supports map aliases that can combine map loading with a supported mode. They are convenient when the alias is documented for the current version, but aliases and numeric mappings are update-sensitive. Verify the alias in the current mode table before putting it into an automated startup script; otherwise use the explicit game-type, game-mode, and map arguments and inspect the result.
Networking and administration options
| Parameter | Purpose | Important limitation or caution |
|---|---|---|
-ip <address> |
Binds the server to a local network interface. | It is not the public address created by a router’s NAT. You still need the appropriate router and firewall configuration for Internet access. |
-netconport <number> |
Exposes a remote-console port. | Choose a port that is available on the host and protect the interface with network controls. |
-netconpassword <password> |
Requires a password for the remote console. | Use a strong, unique secret and do not publish it in screenshots, scripts, or public documentation. |
-maxplayers <number> |
Sets the server’s player-slot capacity. | The resulting capacity must still be compatible with the selected mode and the resources available on the host. |
+sv_lan 1 |
Restricts the server to the local network. | Use this for a LAN or private test; it prevents normal Internet access by design. |
The most common networking mistake is confusing a bind address with a reachable address. -ip tells CS2 which local interface to use. It does not configure NAT, open a firewall, or create port-forwarding rules. Diagnose those layers separately: first confirm that the process is listening on the intended local interface, then check host firewall rules, router forwarding, and the address players use.

Launch options versus server.cfg
Use the command line for values needed to start the process, and configuration files for settings that should persist across map changes or restarts. The exact precedence can vary by mode, but a practical sequence is:
- CS2 starts with executable flags and plus assignments.
- The initial map loads and its associated configuration is applied.
server.cfgand any mode-specific server configuration can set or replace console variables.- A later map change can apply those files again, changing the effective value.
For example, a startup command may contain a value that appears correct in the process list, while the server behaves differently after the first map change because a mode configuration overrides it. When a setting must survive every map, put the persistent cvar in the appropriate server configuration file instead of relying solely on the launch line. After editing a file, reload the map or restart the process and inspect the console again.

Keep startup-only controls such as -dedicated, -console, and interface or remote-console flags on the command line. Keep gameplay and server-policy cvars that need to be reapplied in configuration files, following the file layout used by your current CS2 installation.
A reliable setup procedure
- Confirm the executable and working directory. Run the actual CS2 server executable, not a client shortcut, and make sure it can read its game files and configuration directory.
- Start minimally. Use only
-dedicated,-console, one validated game-type/game-mode pair, and+map. - Wait for the map. Do not test remote connections while the process is still loading. The console should show that the chosen map has completed loading.
- Check the effective state. Confirm the active map and mode in the server console after loading. This catches invalid numeric pairs and configuration overrides.
- Add one feature at a time. Introduce
-ip,-maxplayers, remote-console flags, or LAN restriction individually. Restart after each change so a failure has a clear cause. - Move persistent values to configuration files. If a cvar changes after a map load, place it in
server.cfgor the relevant mode-specific file, then reload the map. - Record the working command. Save a dated copy of the command and the configuration files. A future CS2 update may alter supported flags or mode mappings.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server opens as a game client
Check that -dedicated is present in the command actually being executed. Shortcuts, service definitions, and control panels can silently omit arguments. Also verify that you are editing the launch definition used by the running process rather than an unused copy.
The map loads, but the rules are wrong
Inspect both game_type and game_mode after the map loads. If they are correct at process start but wrong afterward, a mode-specific configuration or server.cfg is overriding them. Move the intended persistent setting into the file that is applied after map changes, then reload and check again.
CS2 appears to ignore a plus command
Steam explicitly cautions that some console commands cannot be used as launch options, even though many work when prefixed with +. First verify that the variable is documented as launch-compatible. If it is a persistent server setting, use the appropriate configuration file instead. Check spelling, spacing, and whether another file changes the value later.

The server binds to the wrong address
-ip accepts a local interface address. Ensure that address exists on the host and is the interface you intend to use. Do not enter the router’s public address unless it is actually assigned to the server machine; NAT normally requires the local address for binding and separate forwarding for outside players.

Remote console access fails
Confirm that -netconport is present, the chosen port is unused, and the host firewall permits the intended management network. Verify the exact -netconpassword value and keep the remote-console service off publicly exposed interfaces unless that exposure is required and protected.
Players cannot join from outside the LAN
First test a local connection to prove that CS2 is listening. Then check the host firewall, router forwarding, and the address distributed to players. If +sv_lan 1 is enabled, remove it for an Internet server and restart; that setting deliberately restricts access to the local network.
The player limit is not what you set
Check -maxplayers in the command used by the running process and inspect configuration files for a later override. Also verify that the selected game mode supports the intended slot count. Treat the command-line number as a capacity request, not proof that every mode or host configuration will expose that many usable slots.
Client launch options are different
Some options often mentioned in CS2 guides belong to a player’s client, not a dedicated server. Steam gives -dev, -toconsole, and -novid as client launch-option examples; -novid suppresses the introductory video. They should not be added to a server command merely because they appear in a client troubleshooting guide. Likewise, a client shortcut is not evidence that a server supports the same argument.
Security and maintenance decisions
- Use
-insecureonly when accepting the loss of Valve Anti-Cheat is part of the test or private-server design. - Protect remote-console access with a strong password and network restrictions; a reachable management port is a high-value target.
- Do not expose internal bind addresses or credentials in public launch scripts.
- Keep a dated, known-good command because CS2 updates can change supported flags, aliases, or numeric mode mappings.
- After every game update, test startup, map loading, mode selection, remote administration, and a map change before reopening the server to players.
Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Launch parameters matter most when you control the machine or have a host that exposes the underlying command and configuration files. A managed service can remove much of the work of updates, ports, and process supervision, but the available controls differ by provider. Compare the two approaches using the following practical criteria:
| Decision factor | Self-hosted server | Managed server |
|---|---|---|
| Command and config control | Full control of the executable arguments and configuration files. | Depends on the provider’s panel and whether custom launch arguments are allowed. |
| Remote console and networking | You configure interfaces, firewall rules, NAT, and remote-console access. | The provider may abstract ports and consoles; exact controls vary and are not stated in the technical references. |
| Updates | You schedule and verify CS2 updates yourself. | The provider may manage updates, but timing and rollback controls vary. |
| Geographic latency | Determined by your machine and network location. | Determined by the provider’s available regions; no comparative performance figure is established here. |
| Player-slot limits | Set with -maxplayers, subject to mode and hardware constraints. |
May be limited by the selected service plan or panel. |
| Operating cost | Depends on your hardware, bandwidth, electricity, and administration. | Pricing is provider-specific and not stated in the technical references. |
Choose self-hosting when you need direct control over launch arguments, files, networking, and update timing. Choose managed hosting when reducing system administration is more important than unrestricted access to those controls, and confirm the provider supports the exact flags and configuration workflow you require.
