If your mic works in Windows but not in a Counter-Strike match, check Steam’s voice test, the game’s voice mode and key binding, and whether the server allows voice chat. If it fails everywhere, start with the connection, Windows input selection, and microphone permissions. Work through the checks below in order before replacing hardware.
Version note: Valve now lists Counter-Strike 2 as the free upgrade to CS:GO; CS:GO is identified as the legacy version. The steps below focus on Windows and Steam troubleshooting that can help with either, but older CS:GO menu labels may not match CS2. See Valve’s Counter-Strike 2 Steam page.
First, find out where the microphone stops working
Test in stages rather than changing several settings at once. A mic that works in Windows but fails in a match points to a different problem than one that Windows cannot detect.
- Check whether Windows or another app receives microphone input.
- In Steam, open Friends & Chat, select the gear/settings, go to Voice, and choose Start Microphone Test.
- If the Steam test works, join a match and test voice there. If possible, try another server.
Steam notes that input may switch when a game launches. A Steam test that passes therefore does not rule out a game-specific input problem. Steam also warns that servers may restrict microphone use or affect voice codec and sound quality. Its guide states: “Your microphone will not work while you are in Spectator mode.” See Steam Support’s Troubleshooting Microphone Problems.

If Windows does not detect your microphone
Check the connection
- For an analog mic, make sure it is plugged into the microphone input, not a headphone or line-out jack. If the jacks are not labeled or color-coded, check the device manual.
- For a USB microphone, try another USB port. A rear port on a desktop can be a useful test; connect directly to the computer instead of through a hub.
- Confirm the headset or microphone is not muted by a physical switch or inline control.
Select the intended input in Windows
Open Windows Sound settings and choose the microphone you actually want to use under Input. If several devices are listed, a webcam mic, controller headset, or virtual audio device may be selected instead. Speak and watch whether the input meter responds. Allow microphone access
In Windows privacy settings, check that microphone access is enabled and that apps can use the microphone. On Windows 11, also check Let desktop apps access your microphone; desktop programs may need that separate permission. Input selection and permissions are distinct: selecting the right device will not help if Windows blocks access, and granting access will not correct a wrong input selection.

If the mic works in Windows or Steam but not in a match
Check voice mode and the push-to-talk key
In the game’s voice settings, verify the transmission mode. If it is set to Push to Talk, confirm the assigned key and press it while speaking. Menu names can differ between legacy CS:GO and CS2, so use the current game’s audio or voice settings rather than relying on an old menu path.
Check the match context
Try another server if voice works in Steam but not in one match; server restrictions can prevent microphone use. Also leave Spectator mode before testing, because Steam says the microphone will not work there.

Check whether the input changes at launch
If the mic passes Steam’s test but stops working after launching the game, return to Windows Sound settings and check which input is active while the game is open. Re-select the intended device, then retest Steam and the game. This helps identify an input-switching issue without assuming the microphone itself has failed.
If other players hear poor-quality voice
- Feedback or echo: Lower speaker volume or test with a headset using earphones, which reduces the sound picked up by the mic.
- Very quiet voice: Check the microphone level in Windows and raise it only if the input is low.
- Crackling or distortion: Inspect the cable and connections, then compare the mic in another app. If quality is poor there too, test another microphone before blaming the game.

If you cannot hear game audio
First check the game’s own audio settings and make sure it is not muted or turned down in the Windows Volume Mixer. The mixer lets you inspect an individual app’s volume, so system-wide sound can work while the game remains muted. Microsoft’s Windows audio guide also recommends trying a different audio format and, if earlier checks fail, restarting the Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder services. When to update drivers or test other hardware
Leave driver changes until after you have checked the physical connection, Windows input device, privacy permissions, Steam voice test, and game settings. If the problem remains, consult the microphone, audio-device, or computer manufacturer’s support site for the appropriate driver. If a microphone is also unreliable in other apps, testing a different mic can help distinguish a device or connection fault from a game configuration issue. A headset with a built-in microphone is an optional comparison, not a guaranteed fix.
