Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has a separate Steam app again, making its legacy client easier to install and launch. But this is not a full revival: the page is unlisted, official matchmaking remains unavailable, and some features that depend on Steam’s Game Coordinator may degrade or fail.
What changed with CS:GO on Steam?
CS:GO now has a separate legacy app on Steam, identified by SteamDB as App ID 4465480. That gives players an install route independent of launching the legacy client through CS2’s branch or depot options. It does not mean the old game’s online services have been restored.
The dates describe different events, not one relaunch day: SteamDB first recorded the app on 25 February 2026; PC Gamer reported the standalone page on 4 March; and SteamDB’s record shows store assets modified on 10 March. Steam’s CS2 store page gives 21 August 2012 as Counter-Strike’s release date, while SteamDB also marks the separate legacy app free to play. SteamDB’s app record is a changing third-party listing, rather than a Valve announcement.
How to find and install the legacy app
The page is unlisted, so searching Steam for CS:GO will not bring it up. Use its direct Steam page to reach the separate app. Its standalone listing makes the legacy client easier to launch without switching depots inside CS2.

A Steam Community guide says its former instructions for accessing the old branch are obsolete now that the separate page is available. The guide is user-maintained, so its troubleshooting details may not reflect every player’s current Steam setup.
What the separate page does—and does not—restore
| Area | CS:GO legacy app | Counter-Strike 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Steam listing | Separate page, but unlisted and absent from Steam search, according to PC Gamer’s 4 March 2026 report. | Public Steam store page. |
| Install and launch | Standalone legacy app; no need to switch depots in CS2 to launch it. | Current Counter-Strike client. |
| Official matchmaking | Reported unavailable; the separate page did not bring it back. | Steam’s current page describes CS2 features including CS Ratings and Premier. |
| Community play | Community servers remain a reported option through Steam’s server browser, though server discovery can vary. | Current service and modes are described on Steam’s CS2 page. |
PC Gamer reported that community servers can still be joined through Steam’s server browser. A Steam Community guide likewise says community servers and Workshop maps work, but warns that the browser’s Internet tab may not populate from the master list. Server availability and discovery should therefore be treated as variable, not guaranteed.

Why did Valve bring back a separate page?
PC Gamer quoted a Valve representative describing it as “just a quality of life improvement and easier way to launch it,” adding that “the legacy client already existed but now you don’t have to switch depots in CS2 anymore.” PC Gamer did not name the representative, and this was an explanation relayed in its report—not a formal Valve announcement.
Counter-Strike.io reported on 4 March 2026 that no Valve blog post or press release announced the relisting. The available reporting points to easier access to an existing legacy client, not a return to active CS:GO service support.

What the Game Coordinator warning means
A Steam Community guide reproduces a service warning: “After January 1, 2024 the game will still be available, but certain functionality that relies on compatibility with the Game Coordinator (e.g., access to inventory) may degrade and/or fail.” This is a warning about possible failures, not confirmation that every affected feature is broken for every player. Inventory access is an example of a function that depends on the Coordinator.
The practical distinction is important: being able to install and open the client does not guarantee that every service tied to Steam’s Game Coordinator will work reliably.

Is CS:GO back, or should you use CS2?
CS:GO is back as a separate, installable legacy app—not as the fully supported live service many players remember. Use the legacy app if you specifically want the old client and are prepared to rely on community servers; choose CS2 for the current Counter-Strike service. Steam describes CS2 as a free upgrade to CS:GO and lists current features such as CS Ratings and Premier on its store page.
