If “CS:GO” won’t launch, first identify whether Steam is opening the current game, Counter-Strike 2, or whether you’re seeing a specific error such as “Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable).” Restart, update your system and graphics drivers, verify the game files, and temporarily close nonessential software before considering hardware changes. The current Steam listing is for Counter-Strike 2; Steam notes that reviews dated before September 27, 2023 refer to CS:GO, the legacy version. Check the requirements for the game and operating system you actually use.
Identify what happens when you launch the game
“Not launching” can mean several different things: Steam does nothing, the game opens and immediately closes, the game freezes, an error appears, or it runs but crashes later. Note which one you see and copy any exact error text. Also record your operating system, basic hardware, recent game or system updates, and when the problem began. These details help distinguish a general launch issue from a specific missing-file problem.
Steam Support describes launch failures as having causes that vary across hardware and software configurations. Its general guide, “My game isn’t launching. How can I resolve this?”, is a starting point rather than a diagnosis for every computer.
Try the basic software checks first
Restart and update your system
Restart the computer, then install available operating-system and graphics-driver updates. On Windows, update Windows and your drivers. On Linux, update the distribution and graphics drivers. The current Counter-Strike 2 listing identifies Windows and SteamOS/Linux requirements; make sure you are following instructions for your actual platform rather than relying on old CS:GO guidance.

Verify the installed game files
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click Counter-Strike 2 and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and let Steam finish checking.
Steam says corrupted extracted files can prevent a game from launching. Verification checks the installation and replaces files Steam finds damaged or missing.
Temporarily close nonessential software
Close background applications and overlays that are not needed, then try launching again. Some software can interfere with Steam or the game; Steam maintains guidance on programs that may interfere with Steam. Treat closing apps as a diagnostic test, not proof that a particular program is inherently harmful. If the game starts, reopen applications one at a time to help identify a conflict.

If Steam reports “Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”
This exact error has a more specific first check: antivirus history or quarantine. Steam says antivirus software may mistakenly identify a game file as malicious and quarantine it.
- Open your antivirus program’s history or quarantine and check whether it lists a Counter-Strike 2 file.
- If a game file was quarantined, use the antivirus vendor’s safe restoration procedure. Do not broadly disable antivirus protection.
- Restart the computer, then verify the game files using the Steam steps above.
- If the error remains, contact Steam Support’s Missing Executable guidance and provide the diagnostic information it requests.
Check the current Counter-Strike 2 requirements
The current Steam listing is for Counter-Strike 2, not the former CS:GO release. Its minimum specifications differ by operating system. Valve lists the following for the current game listing, accessed in 2026:

See the Counter-Strike 2 Steam listing for the current published requirements. If your computer is below a listed minimum, that can explain incompatibility. Being at or near the minimum may also leave little room for variation in a particular system, but meeting minimums is not a promise of high frame rates or smooth performance.

A game that opens but runs at a low frame rate has a different symptom from one that will not start or crashes immediately. Minimum requirements are a compatibility screen, not a guarantee of performance. Steam’s general launch guidance addresses starting failures; its performance guidance covers FPS-related problems separately. Diagnose the symptom you actually have instead of treating every crash or slowdown as evidence that you need new hardware.

When to contact support or get local help
If restarting, updating, file verification, conflict testing, and the requirements check do not resolve the problem, contact the game’s support channel for in-depth help. For the Missing Executable error, Steam specifically asks for an uncropped screenshot of the error, a System Report, and a list of programs removed during conflict troubleshooting; follow the current instructions in its Missing Executable support article.
If general software checks do not identify the cause, a local PC technician may be able to diagnose a problem specific to your configuration. Consider hardware changes only when you have identified a requirement your system does not meet; the standard launch troubleshooting steps do not support buying a particular component as a general fix.
