You may also see “The code execution cannot proceed because csproj.dll was not found,” “The specified module could not be found,” or “csproj.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The safest fix for a csproj.dll error is usually to repair or reinstall the Visual Studio installation, extension, or older developer tool that owns the file. Do not download a replacement DLL into System32 or SysWOW64.
What csproj.dll is
csproj.dll is identified as the C# Project System DLL, a Microsoft component associated with Visual Studio and historically with Microsoft Visual Studio .NET. It supports C# project handling inside the development environment or software that bundled part of that environment.

It is not normally a Windows system component, DirectX file, .NET Framework runtime file, or Visual C++ Redistributable file. A missing copy does not automatically mean Windows itself is damaged.
The filename alone cannot identify the exact program that is failing. The caller could be:
- Visual Studio
- An older Visual Studio extension
- A legacy developer utility
- Another application that bundled a Visual Studio component
- A program left behind after Visual Studio was partially removed
Microsoft documents a Csproj.dll instance in Visual Studio 2010 SP1 with version 10.0.40219.353, size 2,292,040 bytes, and x86 platform. That confirms a 32-bit Visual Studio component, but it does not establish that every csproj.dll belongs to Visual Studio 2010 or that every release contains the same file.
The 60-second repair
Use the repair method that matches the application named in the error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Visual Studio is the failing program
- Close Visual Studio.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Visual Studio Installer.
- Open the installer.
- Find the installed Visual Studio product.
- Select More.
- Select Repair.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Visual Studio and test the project again.
Microsoft explains the full process in its Visual Studio repair procedure.
Repair can restore missing installation files, but it can reset local Visual Studio settings and extensions. Record important settings first, and be prepared to reinstall extensions afterward.
If Repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall the affected Visual Studio product from Visual Studio Installer and reinstall the same supported product and workloads from Microsoft. Installing a newer Visual Studio release is not guaranteed to restore a legacy csproj.dll.
If another application is failing
Identify that application in the error window, shortcut, or Task Manager. Then:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for the application named by the error.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what is available.
- If no repair option exists, reinstall it from the original vendor or installation media.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If the error began after removing Visual Studio, an extension, or an old developer tool, reinstall the product that originally installed the component. The correct file may need to remain beside that program’s executable rather than in a Windows directory.
Identify the program that is actually calling the DLL
Do not assume that the program displaying the message is the owner of csproj.dll. A launcher, startup entry, extension, or helper process may be invoking it.
Rank #2
Check the following:
- Note the complete error text.
- Look for the executable named in the title bar or message.
- Right-click the affected shortcut and select Properties.
- Check the Target field.
- Note the executable’s folder.
- Open Task Manager if the program stays open.
- Right-click the process and select Open file location.
- Record the full path.
Also check whether the failure occurs:
- Immediately after signing in
- Only when opening a particular project
- Only when launching an extension
- After uninstalling or updating Visual Studio
- After antivirus software reported a detection
- After restoring or copying an old application
The calling executable, not the DLL filename, determines which product should be repaired.
What the common messages mean
“csproj.dll is missing from your computer”
Windows could not find the file in the application’s expected search path. The file may have been deleted, quarantined, removed during cleanup, or lost when its parent product was incompletely uninstalled.
Recommended Free Tools
Repair or reinstall the owning application first.
“The specified module could not be found”
This does not always mean csproj.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found csproj.dll but failed to load a dependency that it requires.
A mismatched Visual Studio generation, damaged installation, missing dependency, or wrong architecture can produce this message. Reinstalling the owning product is safer than copying individual files.
“csproj.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
This commonly indicates a corrupted binary, incompatible architecture, or a file from the wrong release. It can also occur when an application loads a damaged or incomplete dependency.
Replace the complete product installation through repair or reinstall. Do not try to fix the problem by registering the DLL.

“The procedure entry point could not be located”
The application found a DLL, but the exported function it expects is not present. This usually means the file is from the wrong version or the caller and component do not belong together.
Restore the matching Visual Studio or application release instead of substituting a similarly named file.
Check architecture and version compatibility
The Microsoft-documented Visual Studio 2010 SP1 copy of csproj.dll is x86. That means a 32-bit application may require a 32-bit component even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
Do not infer that a 64-bit Windows installation needs a 64-bit csproj.dll. Windows architecture and application architecture are separate.
To check the affected application:
- Open Task Manager.
- Select the Details tab.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Select Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if available.
- Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
You can also inspect the product’s documentation or installation folder. If the application is old, its installer may require the original Visual Studio generation rather than a current release.
There is no reliable universal System32 or SysWOW64 location for this file. Copying a 32-bit DLL into a Windows folder can create version conflicts and still leave the application unable to locate its required dependencies.
Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine a legitimate file after an update, corruption event, or false positive.
In Windows Security:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the relevant detection.
- Check the file path and the product that installed it.
- Restore the file only if it came from a trusted Microsoft or vendor installation and the detection is clearly a false positive.
- Run a scan after restoring it.
Microsoft notes that Defender may detect the file again after restoration. Use Allow on device only when you are confident about the file’s origin and safety. If the file came from an unknown archive, do not restore it. Reinstall the owning product from a trusted source instead.
If malware may have modified the installation, disconnect the affected machine from sensitive work where appropriate, run a full security scan, and reinstall the application after cleaning the system.
Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
Because csproj.dll is associated with Visual Studio rather than the Windows component store, SFC and DISM are secondary checks. They are appropriate when you also see damaged Windows features, unexplained system errors, or failures involving protected Windows files.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the application.
Microsoft provides the supported DISM and System File Checker instructions.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If DISM reports that it cannot repair the image, or SFC reports unrepaired files, follow Microsoft’s repair guidance. Do not expect these commands to restore a Visual Studio-owned DLL that is missing from the Windows component store.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed rarely fixes a product-specific installation. Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work by showing what its free scan finds, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that application owns csproj.dll.
Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore can help if the error appeared immediately after an update, uninstall, cleanup operation, or driver installation and a restore point exists from before the failure.
Rank #4
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains what System Restore changes and what it does not affect.
System Restore is not a substitute for reinstalling Visual Studio. If it does not resolve the error, repair the owning product directly.
Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose DLL repair command.
There is no verified evidence that csproj.dll should be registered with regsvr32. Running commands such as these can produce misleading errors without restoring the missing component:
regsvr32 csproj.dll
Do not register the file unless the product’s official documentation specifically instructs you to do so. Microsoft documents the utility’s purpose and syntax in its regsvr32 reference.
Driver updates are usually not the fix
A graphics, chipset, storage, or input driver normally does not provide csproj.dll. Driver updates should be considered only when the error is accompanied by device failures, display crashes, or broader hardware-related problems.
For a manual check:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider and date.
- Obtain updates from the device or computer manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and retest.
Do not install a driver merely because a DLL error appears. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which of several installed drivers its free scan identifies as stale, while installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing the Visual Studio or application installation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid websites that offer individual copies of csproj.dll. A downloaded file may be:
- Modified or malicious
- From the wrong Visual Studio generation
- The wrong architecture
- Missing required dependencies
- Incompatible with the calling executable
- A temporary replacement that leaves the original installation damaged
Even if copying the file makes one message disappear, it can create a version conflict or move the problem to another DLL. It also makes future repair and security investigation harder.
Use Visual Studio Installer, the original application vendor, Microsoft installation media, or an organization’s approved software repository. Do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 by default.
Legacy Visual Studio installations
If the application requires Visual Studio .NET or Visual Studio 2010, a current Visual Studio installer may not provide the needed component. Microsoft identifies Visual Studio 2010 as unsupported, and older downloads may require access through Microsoft’s available subscription or developer channels. See Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2010 SP1 release information.
Best Value
For a business application, check the original deployment records, installer media, software vendor, or application owner before removing the old environment. Preserve project files and configuration data before uninstalling anything.
When to remove and reinstall Visual Studio
Use a full uninstall and reinstall when:
- Visual Studio Installer Repair fails
- Installation files are repeatedly missing
- The installer itself is damaged
- The wrong workloads were installed
- The same error returns after every repair
- A previous installation was interrupted or partially removed
Before uninstalling, record:
- The Visual Studio edition and release
- Installed workloads
- Extensions
- Project locations
- Custom SDKs and tools
- Organization-specific configuration
After reinstalling, add only the workloads and extensions required by the affected project. Test the original project before restoring optional extensions.
FAQ
Is csproj.dll part of Windows?
No. Available Microsoft evidence associates it with Visual Studio’s C# project system. It should not normally be treated as a Windows system DLL.
Is csproj.dll part of .NET Framework?
The file is associated with Visual Studio project handling, not identified as a general .NET Framework runtime component. Installing a newer .NET runtime is not a reliable fix.
Should I put csproj.dll in System32?
No. Restore it through the product that owns it. The correct location depends on the application and its installation layout.
Is csproj.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The Microsoft-documented Visual Studio 2010 SP1 instance is x86. Do not assume that every historical or later copy has the same architecture without checking the owning installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes Visual Studio Repair delete my projects?
Repair targets the Visual Studio installation, but it can reset settings and extensions. Back up important work and configuration before starting.
Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file is present?
A dependency may be missing, incompatible, or the wrong architecture. The message does not prove that csproj.dll itself is absent.
Should I run Windows Update?
Install pending Windows updates when the system is generally unstable, but Windows Update is not the primary repair for a missing Visual Studio component. Repair the owning application first.
What should I provide if the error remains?
Record the complete error message, calling executable, full DLL path, Windows version, Visual Studio version, application architecture, and what changed immediately before the failure. Those details are needed to distinguish a missing file from a dependency, architecture, quarantine, or version problem.
