hts32.dll is a third-party HTML Add-on component from Sub Systems, Inc., not a Windows system file. When Windows reports that hts32.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, the safest fix is to identify the application that installed it and repair or reinstall that application from its official installer.

Do not begin by downloading hts32.dll from a DLL website or copying it into C:WindowsSystem32. The correct file may belong beside the affected program’s executable, and another program’s copy may be the wrong version or architecture.

Fix 1: Identify the application that needs hts32.dll

Time needed: 5–10 minutes

The filename alone does not identify the parent application. Sub Systems’ HTML Add-on has been bundled with older programs including Pegasus Mail, MailCOPA, MyMailList & AddressBook, MyLabel Designer Deluxe, Medisoft- or Practice Partner-related software, and InfoRecall. These are identification clues, not proof that a particular installation owns the file.

Start with the exact error message.

Check the error window

Write down:

  • The application name shown in the title bar
  • The complete error text
  • Whether it says “missing,” “not found,” “could not be loaded,” or “not designed to run on Windows”
  • The moment the error appears, such as when launching, opening a document, or printing

A modern Windows message may say:

The code execution cannot proceed because hts32.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.

The wording varies by Windows version and by how the application loads its libraries.

Find the program from the shortcut

  1. Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Check Target and Start in.
  5. Note the folder containing the program’s executable.

If the shortcut points to an old application folder under C:Program Files, C:Program Files (x86), or another vendor folder, that is usually the installation that should be repaired.

Search for existing copies

  1. Press Windows key + E.
  2. Select This PC in the left pane.
  3. In the search box, enter hts32.dll.
  4. Wait for the search to finish.
  5. Right-click each result and select Open file location.

Pay attention to the location rather than just the filename. A copy beside an application executable is more useful evidence than a copy in a Windows system folder. Do not assume that a copy found in another program’s folder can be reused.

If the search finds no copy, the file may have been deleted, quarantined, or removed by an incomplete update or cleanup operation.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

This is the most likely fix because hts32.dll is an application component, not a Windows component.

Try the application’s repair option

  1. Close the affected application.
  2. Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  5. Find the application named in the error.
  6. Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
  7. Choose Advanced options if available.
  8. Select Repair.
  9. Start the application again.

Some older programs provide their own repair command instead:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Select Programs and Features.
  4. Select the affected application.
  5. Choose Change, Repair, or Modify.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.

A successful repair restores the application’s private files without changing unrelated Windows components. Test the same action that originally produced the error.

Use a launcher or file verification feature

Some applications have a launcher with options named Verify files, Scan files, Repair installation, or Check installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the application’s official launcher.
  2. Select the affected application.
  3. Open its settings or menu.
  4. Choose the verification or repair command.
  5. Allow the process to replace missing files.
  6. Restart Windows if the launcher requests it.
  7. Test the application again.

If no repair option exists, use the official installer for the exact application and edition. Avoid uninstalling first if you do not have the installer, license information, activation details, or a backup of the application’s data.

Reinstall from the official source

  1. Confirm the application name and version.
  2. Obtain the installer from the application vendor, your organization’s software archive, or the original installation media.
  3. Back up application data before removing anything.
  4. Close the application.
  5. Open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
  6. Select the affected application and choose Uninstall, if the vendor’s instructions require it.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Run the official installer.
  9. Start the application and test it.

Sub Systems distributes developer components as ZIP packages that do not self-install. That means a finished application may carry its own private copy of the HTML Add-on beside the program files. A developer package is not automatically a suitable replacement for a missing file in a consumer application.

There is no confirmed universal standalone consumer download for hts32.dll. The application’s exact installer or its vendor’s support channel is the safe source.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Time needed: 5–10 minutes

Antivirus software may remove or quarantine an old application component. Do not restore the file automatically. First confirm that the application and its installer are trusted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open Windows Security.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections.
  7. Expand any entry that refers to the application folder or hts32.dll.

Restore or allow the file only when all of these are true:

  • The file is in the expected application folder.
  • The application came from a trusted official source.
  • The alert identifies the file as a detection or suspected false positive rather than confirmed malware.
  • You have checked the installer’s provenance and digital signature where available.
  • You understand the risk of allowing the file.

If those conditions are not clear, leave the file quarantined. Remove and reinstall the application from its official source, then run a full security scan. Microsoft warns that allowing a genuine threat can put the device and data at risk.

If the file disappears again after reinstalling, security software may be removing it repeatedly. Review the latest protection alert and contact the application vendor before creating an exclusion.

Fix 4: Confirm the application’s architecture

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

The name hts32.dll suggests historical use with a 32-bit build, but the filename alone does not prove the required architecture or version. Sub Systems offers separate Win32 and Win64 HTML Add-on products.

  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE

A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows and still require its own 32-bit private DLL. Do not replace it with a Win64 build, and do not use a copy taken from another application.

To identify the application architecture:

  1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Details.
  3. Start the affected application if possible.
  4. Locate its executable.
  5. Right-click the column headings and choose Select columns.
  6. Enable Platform, if that column is available.

You can also inspect the installation path. C:Program Files (x86) commonly contains 32-bit applications, while C:Program Files commonly contains 64-bit applications, but the folder name is not conclusive.

The definitive answer comes from the application’s installer or vendor documentation. Repair the application using the same edition and architecture that was originally installed.

Fix 5: Check whether a dependency is actually failing

Time needed: 10–20 minutes

Sometimes Windows names hts32.dll even though the real problem is a library that hts32.dll needs. A damaged application installation, missing runtime, or incompatible component can produce a loader error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First, repair or reinstall the complete application. Do not install random runtime packages as a diagnostic experiment.

Install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only when the application’s documentation or installer specifically requires it. hts32.dll is not itself a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file. Microsoft’s current supported redistributable information is available in its official documentation.

If the application still fails:

  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Open Windows Logs → Application.
  4. Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
  5. Record the application name, faulting module, and exception details.
  6. Check the application’s own logs if it provides them.

Do not treat an Event Viewer entry as proof that the named module is the only damaged file. Use it to give the application vendor precise information.

Fix 6: Run Windows component repair tools

Time needed: 15–45 minutes

DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They normally do not replace a third-party DLL installed by an application, so use them after repairing the parent program or when other Windows features are also malfunctioning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install pending Windows updates.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Open Start.
  4. Type Command Prompt.
  5. Right-click Command Prompt.
  6. Select Run as administrator.
  7. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  8. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for DISM to complete.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected application.

Do not run SFC first when following Microsoft’s current repair sequence. DISM repairs the component store that SFC may use.

If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that does not validate hts32.dll. SFC generally does not verify or repair private files belonging to third-party applications.

When Windows repair scans are slow or repeatedly inconclusive, manually comparing logs and component versions can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can perform a free scan to show what it identifies; repairs are completed by the full version, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix for this file.

Fix 7: Check drivers only when the symptoms point to a driver

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

A display, printer, or storage driver is not a normal replacement for hts32.dll. Investigate drivers when the application fails during printing, graphics operations, device access, or immediately after a driver change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Device Manager

  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the failing operation, such as Display adapters, Printers, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or Storage controllers.
  4. Look for a yellow warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected device.
  6. Select Properties.
  7. Open the General tab and read the device status.
  8. Open the Driver tab to review the provider and date.
  9. Use Update Driver only with a driver from the device or PC manufacturer, unless Windows Update is the vendor-supported method.

Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what it identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version; verify every proposed driver against the hardware manufacturer, because updating a driver will not replace the application’s missing hts32.dll.

If Device Manager shows no relevant problem, return to repairing the parent application rather than changing drivers.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent system change

Time needed: 20–45 minutes

System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after an update, installation, cleanup operation, or other system change and a restore point exists.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point created before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore does not replace a proper application reinstall and may not affect files stored in application-specific folders. Back up important data before proceeding.

Fix 9: Use compatibility settings for an older application

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

Compatibility mode can help an old program run on a newer Windows release, but it cannot recreate a missing DLL.

  1. Right-click the application’s executable or shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Choose the Windows version recommended by the application vendor.
  6. Select Apply, then OK.
  7. Start the application.

If the error still names a missing hts32.dll, repair or reinstall the application. Compatibility settings address behavioral differences, not absent application files.

Why System32 copying is usually wrong

C:WindowsSystem32 is a protected Windows component directory. On 64-bit Windows, C:WindowsSysWOW64 is associated with 32-bit system components, despite the confusing name. Neither folder is a general-purpose storage location for third-party application DLLs.

Application-local DLLs are often intentionally stored beside the executable so that each program receives the version it was tested with. Copying a file into a Windows folder can:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Leave the original application installation incomplete
  • Cause the program to load the wrong version
  • Create architecture mismatches
  • Produce crashes instead of a missing-file message
  • Make future repair and removal more difficult
  • Introduce a file whose origin has not been verified

Restore the file to the application’s own installation directory only through its official repair or installer process.

Why regsvr32 usually does not apply

regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal DLL repair command.

Do not run:

regsvr32 hts32.dll

unless the affected application’s documentation specifically instructs you to register that exact file. A registration failure does not prove that the file is missing or corrupt, and registering the wrong architecture can produce misleading errors.

The normal repair path for hts32.dll is application repair or reinstallation, not manual registration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likely causes and the corresponding fix

Likely cause What to do
The application was incompletely installed Use Repair, Verify files, or reinstall from the official installer
The private DLL was deleted Check quarantine, then repair the application
An update or cleanup removed an old component Reinstall the affected legacy application
A 32-bit and 64-bit build were mixed Install the architecture required by that application
The file is corrupt Replace it through the application installer, not a separate download
A dependency is missing Repair the complete installation and inspect application logs
Windows components are damaged Run DISM, then SFC
A recent system change caused the failure Use System Restore when an appropriate restore point exists

When to escalate

Contact the application vendor or your organization’s administrator with:

  • The exact error text
  • The application name and version
  • The application installation path
  • The full path where hts32.dll was expected or found
  • Your Windows version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • The result of Repair or reinstall
  • Any Windows Security detection details
  • Whether the file is digitally signed
  • Relevant Event Viewer details

If only one Windows user account is affected, test the application in another account and check permissions and profile-specific paths. If many unrelated programs report DLL errors, investigate broader Windows, storage, or malware problems instead of treating hts32.dll as an isolated failure.

FAQ

Is hts32.dll part of Windows?

No. It is associated with Sub Systems, Inc.’s HTML Add-on, which provides HTML viewing and import/export functionality for TE Edit Control.

Which program installed hts32.dll?

The filename alone cannot identify the program. It has appeared with multiple older applications. Use the error window, shortcut target, installation folders, and Windows search to identify the parent application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I download hts32.dll separately?

Do not use random DLL download sites sites. They may provide malware, the wrong version, or the wrong architecture, and the file may still fail because another dependency is missing. Use the affected application’s official installer or vendor support.

Should I copy hts32.dll to System32?

Usually not. The application may require a private copy beside its executable. Repair or reinstall the application instead.

Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?

Only if the application’s installer or documentation requires it. Visual C++ Redistributable does not replace hts32.dll.

Should I use regsvr32?

Normally no. Use it only when the affected application’s documentation specifically says that this file must be registered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is hts32.dll malware?

There is no basis for declaring every copy malicious or every copy safe. Verify its location, publisher, installer source, signature, and antivirus result. If Windows Security quarantined it, investigate the alert before restoring it.

Why did reinstalling fix the error temporarily?

Security software may remove the file again, the disk may have problems, or the application may be an obsolete unsupported build. Check protection history, storage health, and the application vendor’s support information if the error returns.
