“cssed.dll” errors you may see
Windows or an older application may display one of these messages:
- “This application failed to start because cssed.dll was not found.”
- “The file cssed.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: cssed.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Error loading cssed.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because cssed.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “cssed.dll not found.”
- “Cannot find cssed.dll.”
- “Cannot register cssed.dll.”
The 60-second answer
cssed.dll is not established as a standard Windows, Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or driver file. It is an application DLL, and the strongest known association is with legacy Software602 Form Filler, also called 602XML Filler.

Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website or copy it into System32. First identify the executable named in the error, then repair or reinstall the application that owns that executable. If Software602 Form Filler is installed, reinstall it from the vendor’s official FormFiller installer.

What is cssed.dll?
The name suggests a CSS-editing component. A public file record describes an old 32-bit Win32 file associated with “CSSEd” and attributes it to Microsoft, but that historical attribution is not confirmed by a current Microsoft component catalogue. It also conflicts with the stronger Software602 application association.
The practical conclusion is more useful than the uncertain historical label:
cssed.dllis not known to be a protected Windows component.- It should normally remain in the folder of the application that loads it.
- No verified 64-bit build has been established.
- A 32-bit application needs its x86 application files even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
- The current Software602 package may not contain the identical legacy file, so the affected application and its installer must be identified first.
Microsoft’s historical material confirms that Visual InterDev 6.0 was a real product, but it does not prove that this particular DLL belongs to Visual InterDev. Treat an old Visual InterDev or Visual Studio installation as a possibility to investigate, not as confirmed ownership.
First, identify the parent application
The error message usually names the program that failed. That program is more important than the DLL filename.
Check the error window
Read the title bar and the first line of the message. Note:
- The executable name, if shown.
- The application name.
- The folder from which the application starts.
- Whether the error appeared after an update, uninstall, antivirus detection, or system change.
If the message does not identify the program, open Event Viewer:
- Press Windows+R.
- Type
eventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
- Check the General and Details tabs for the faulting application or executable path.
Look for Software602
Check these locations:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for Software602 Form Filler, Form Filler, or 602XML.
- Also check Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features for older installations.
You can also search File Explorer for:
Filler602.exe602xmlfiller.exe602XML
An older installation may be under a path similar to:
C:Program FilesSoftware602602XML
This path is an association, not proof that every copy of cssed.dll found there is genuine. Confirm that the executable producing the error belongs to the same application.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application
This is the most likely solution because the DLL belongs to an application package rather than Windows.
Try Windows’ built-in Repair option
On Windows 11:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
On some Windows 10 applications, the route is Settings → Apps → Apps & features → application → Advanced options → Repair.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings. For older desktop programs, reinstalling is usually more reliable.
Recommended Free Tools
Reinstall from the vendor’s installer
Use the application developer’s official download page or the original licensed installation media. For Software602, look for the official FormFiller for Windows package rather than an isolated DLL.
Before reinstalling:
- Close the affected application.
- Back up any documents or custom templates it uses.
- If the installer supports reinstalling over the existing copy, use that first.
- If it does not, uninstall the application through Settings → Apps → Installed apps or Control Panel → Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official installer.
- Start the application and open the file or workflow that previously failed.
A successful repair restores the application without a cssed.dll error. If the same message returns immediately, confirm that you installed the correct product and that antivirus did not remove the file again.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove an old DLL even when the rest of the application remains installed.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries created around the time the application stopped working.
- Expand any detection associated with the application folder or
cssed.dll.
Do not blindly choose Allow on device. First verify:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- The application is one you intentionally installed.
- The file is located in the application’s expected folder.
- You have the original installer available.
- The detection is not describing a modified or unexpected file.
The safer recovery is usually to reinstall the complete application from trusted vendor media. If you restore a quarantined file and the error persists, a dependency may also be missing or the file may have been damaged.
Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Available metadata identifies cssed.dll as a Win32/x86 component. That matters on 64-bit Windows.
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows normally uses its own 32-bit files. It does not need a copy of the DLL in both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64. Despite the confusing folder names, Windows uses those directories for different system architectures.
Do not solve an architecture problem by copying files between them. Windows’ DLL search process normally checks the application directory first. Microsoft documents this behavior in its DLL search order guidance.

- Install the matching x86 version of that application.
- Use the application’s official installer to restore all related files.
- Avoid mixing files from different releases.
A file with the right name but a different publisher, location, or unknown origin is not a valid replacement.
Fix 4: Repair a missing dependency
“The specified module could not be found” can sometimes mean that Windows found cssed.dll but could not load one of its dependencies.
Reinstalling the parent application is still the correct first repair because it restores the complete dependency set. Do not infer that every DLL error requires a runtime package.

Install Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables only when the error specifically names a Microsoft runtime such as:
MSVCP*.dllMSVCR*.dllVCRUNTIME*.dll
Microsoft’s official packages are documented on the latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page. The packages include vc_redist.x86.exe, vc_redist.x64.exe, and vc_redist.arm64.exe; none is identified as the provider of cssed.dll.
Do not reinstall DirectX or .NET merely because the missing filename ends in .dll. Use those components only when the application’s own requirements or error message specifically point to them.
Fix 5: Check optional Windows features for very old software
Some legacy applications depend on an optional Windows component, but cssed.dll itself is not identified as one.
To inspect available features:
- Press Windows+R.
- Type
optionalfeaturesand press Enter. - Review features such as .NET Framework 3.5 only if the application documentation requires them.
- Enable the required feature.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not enable random features as a substitute for reinstalling the parent application. If the program is too old for current Windows, preserving its original installer and running it in a compatible, supported environment may be more appropriate than replacing individual files.
Fix 6: Run DISM and System File Checker only for wider Windows problems
Because cssed.dll is not established as a Windows-protected file, SFC and DISM will not normally recreate it. Use them when you also see damaged Windows features, repeated system application failures, update problems, or several unrelated files failing.
Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin):
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. These commands repair Windows components, not normally third-party application files.

Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time while leaving the parent application damaged. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what it identifies; its repair functions require the full version, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when that application owns cssed.dll.
Fix 7: Update drivers only when evidence points there
A graphics, printer, storage, or other driver is not a likely direct provider of cssed.dll. Consider drivers only if the application fails alongside device errors, display problems, crashes, or entries in Device Manager.
To check:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing application.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties → Driver.
- Note the provider and driver status.
- Use Update driver → Search automatically for drivers, or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
Do not remove a working driver solely because cssed.dll is missing. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the required updates; its driver installation requires the full version, while the application’s official reinstall remains the appropriate repair for this DLL.
Do not register or manually copy cssed.dll
Normally, regsvr32 does not apply.
Microsoft documents regsvr32 for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Nothing confirms that cssed.dll is a COM server or self-registering component. Running:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →regsvr32 cssed.dll
may produce “The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.” That result does not repair a missing application library.
Likewise, copying an arbitrary file into System32, SysWOW64, or another Windows folder is unsafe and often ineffective. It can introduce malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible version, or a DLL with the correct name but the wrong contents. Restore the file through the application’s installer instead.
Last-resort recovery
Use broader recovery only when normal application repair fails and the problem followed a system-wide change.
System Restore
- Press Windows+R.
- Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings but does not normally remove personal files. Microsoft explains the available Windows recovery options.

FAQ
Is cssed.dll a Windows System32 file?
It is not established as a standard System32 or SysWOW64 component. Treat it as an application file and keep it beside the executable that loads it.
Is cssed.dll part of Visual C++?
No verified evidence identifies it as a Visual C++ runtime. Install a Visual C++ Redistributable only when the error names an MSVCP, MSVCR, or VCRUNTIME file.
Should I download cssed.dll separately?
No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong version, or the wrong architecture, and they do not restore the application’s other files. Use the parent application’s official installer.
Does regsvr32 fix it?
Normally no. It applies to self-registering DLLs with a DllRegisterServer entry point, and cssed.dll has not been shown to provide one.
What if Software602 Form Filler is not installed?
Return to the error’s executable and installation folder. The DLL may belong to another legacy application. Repair or reinstall that specific program rather than assuming Microsoft or Software602 ownership.
When should I use SFC and DISM?
Use them when several unrelated Windows features or applications are also failing. They are secondary checks and are not expected to restore a third-party cssed.dll by themselves.
