occache.dll Not Found: Rebuild the Windows ActiveX Component

occache.dll is a genuine Windows and Internet Explorer component, not a normal Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file. If occache.dll is missing or could not be loaded, repair Windows servicing first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

Microsoft documentation associates this file with Internet Explorer’s ActiveX control cache. It helps enumerate, update, and safely remove ActiveX controls, and Microsoft API documentation directly references OCCACHE.DLL during ActiveX-control removal. The “Object Control Viewer” description sometimes attached to the file is not a separately documented Microsoft product.

Identify the file before repairing it

The file may be involved when an old application, installer, ActiveX control, or Internet Explorer-based component displays messages such as:

  • “occache.dll was not found.”
  • “The program can’t start because occache.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “There was a problem starting occache.dll.”
  • “occache.dll could not be loaded.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because occache.dll was not found.”
  • “occache.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

These are common Windows loader-message variants. The wording alone does not prove that the file itself is the root cause.

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer update records show that the occache.dll file family is serviced with Windows and Internet Explorer updates, including both 32-bit and 64-bit builds.

What to check What it means
C:WindowsSystem32occache.dll Normal location for the Windows system copy on many installations
C:WindowsSysWOW64occache.dll Possible 32-bit copy on 64-bit Windows
32-bit application Usually loads 32-bit system components
64-bit application Usually loads 64-bit system components
File absent from one location Not conclusive until Windows servicing and the exact failing program are checked
File copied from another PC Potentially wrong build, architecture, signature, or servicing state

The exact path and version depend on the Windows release and servicing state. Do not replace a 32-bit copy with a 64-bit copy, or mix files from different Windows releases.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then repair system files

This is the safest first repair when the message appears during startup, Windows maintenance, Internet Explorer-related activity, or use of an old enterprise application.

Install pending updates

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. On Windows 11, select Check for updates. On Windows 10, select Check for updates in Update & Security.
  4. Install every available quality, security, and cumulative update.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Try the affected program again.

The file is serviced as part of Windows and Internet Explorer updates rather than through a standalone occache.dll redistributable. If Windows Update fails, restart and check again. Persistent update failures may indicate component-store damage.

Run DISM and SFC in the correct order

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish. This can take time and may appear to pause.
  2. When it completes, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the program again.

DISM repairs the Windows component image that SFC uses as a source. SFC then checks protected system files and repairs files it can match to the repaired image. Microsoft documents both commands in its Windows image repair guidance.

If DISM says that source files cannot be found, do not download occache.dll from a file site. Install pending updates first, then use a correctly matched Windows installation source or proceed to an in-place Windows repair.

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork when you are repeatedly hunting for damaged Windows components and cannot tell what changed; its free scan shows detected problems, while repair actions are handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the direct repair path.

Fix 2: Check whether security software quarantined it

A legitimate system DLL can be quarantined if it was altered, replaced, or falsely detected. A familiar filename alone does not prove that a copy is safe.

Check Windows Security

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Open Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving occache.dll.
  5. Expand the event and review its path, detection name, and action.
  6. Restore the file only when the path, Microsoft signature, and detection history support that it is the genuine system file.
  7. Run Scan options and choose a Full scan. Use Microsoft Defender Offline scan if the problem appeared after suspected malware removal.
  8. After scanning, run DISM and SFC again.

Do not disable antivirus protection simply to force a DLL into System32. If malware removal preceded the error, treat the machine as potentially compromised and change important passwords from a known-clean device.

If the quarantine record points to an application folder rather than a Windows folder, the affected application may have been modified or installed from an untrusted source. Repair or reinstall that application from its official publisher.

Fix 3: Repair the program that triggers the message

If Windows passes DISM and SFC without finding corruption but one old program still fails, the program may be the caller rather than Windows itself.

  1. Note the exact executable or shortcut that produces the error.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Apps, then Installed apps. On Windows 10, open Apps & features.
  4. Select the affected program.
  5. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  6. Select Repair. If that does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings.
  7. If those options are unavailable, open the program’s official installer and choose Repair, or uninstall and reinstall it from the publisher’s official source.
  8. Restart Windows and test again.

An old installer, ActiveX control, WebOC component, or COM-based business application may still invoke Internet Explorer platform files even though standalone Internet Explorer is retired. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not a first-line fix unless the error specifically names that runtime.

On Windows 10, Internet Explorer 11 desktop support ended for many editions on June 15, 2022. Windows 11 does not provide the standalone Internet Explorer 11 desktop application. For supported legacy web compatibility, use Microsoft Edge’s IE mode rather than trying to reinstall Internet Explorer. Microsoft explains the lifecycle in its Internet Explorer 11 documentation and IE mode in its IE mode FAQ.

Fix 4: Check Windows features without forcing Internet Explorer back

Do not enable random legacy components just because an error mentions an Internet Explorer-related DLL. First identify whether the failing software genuinely requires an optional Windows feature.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type optionalfeatures and press Enter.
  3. Review the available Windows features.
  4. If the affected application’s official documentation specifically requires a legacy component, enable only that documented feature.
  5. Select OK and restart when prompted.
  6. Test the application.

Windows 11 does not turn into a supported standalone Internet Explorer installation by enabling an optional feature. IE mode in Edge is the normal compatibility path for legacy websites and applications that support it.

Fix 5: Check architecture and file integrity

A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application can load different copies of a Windows component. A manually copied file may look correct while being the wrong architecture or build.

To inspect the two usual locations:

  1. Press Windows + E.
  2. Browse to C:WindowsSystem32.
  3. Search for occache.dll.
  4. On 64-bit Windows, also browse to C:WindowsSysWOW64.
  5. Right-click each copy, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures.
  6. Review the signer and signature status.
  7. Open the Details tab to compare file information without assuming that every historical version applies to your Windows edition.

Do not copy the file from System32 to SysWOW64, or the reverse. Do not use a file from another computer as a substitute. Windows servicing is the correct way to restore the matching architecture and dependencies.

Fix 6: Update a related driver only when the failing program is hardware-based

A driver is not the usual owner of occache.dll, but an old capture device, scanner, printer, or enterprise peripheral may launch software that depends on legacy Internet Explorer components.

Use Device Manager only when the failure is tied to a specific device:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category for the affected device.
  4. Right-click the device and select Properties.
  5. Check the General tab for an error code.
  6. Open the Driver tab and choose Update Driver.
  7. Select Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver downloaded from the device manufacturer.
  8. Restart and test the device software.

Outbyte Driver Updater can show which of many installed drivers are stale instead of making you guess through Device Manager; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the failure.

Fix 7: Use System Restore or an in-place repair

Consider System Restore when the error began immediately after a driver, update, or software change and a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Search Start for Create a restore point.
  2. Open it and select System Restore.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
  4. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  5. Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
  6. Test the failing application.

System Restore is not guaranteed to restore a missing system component, and it does not replace a malware investigation. Microsoft provides additional System Restore guidance.

If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, disk errors recur, or several Windows components are damaged, an in-place Windows repair installation may be appropriate. Use installation media that matches the installed Windows edition and architecture, choose the option to keep personal files and apps, and back up important data first. If the system cannot boot reliably or contains signs of active malware, use professional support.

What not to do

Do not download occache.dll from a random DLL site

An isolated download may contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible Windows build, or a modified file with no trustworthy signature. Even a genuine file may not fix the component store, update transaction, registry state, or dependency that caused the error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the affected program’s official installer, or matched Microsoft installation media instead.

Do not start with regsvr32

regsvr32 is a registration utility for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command. Microsoft documents its scope and syntax in the regsvr32 command reference.

Registering occache.dll may return an error and will not recreate Windows servicing metadata, repair dependencies, or restore a quarantined file. Use it only if official documentation for the specific application explicitly requires registration.

Do not reinstall unrelated runtimes

Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET do not normally repair a Windows/Internet Explorer component. Installing them repeatedly can add clutter while leaving the real Windows servicing problem untouched.

FAQ

Is occache.dll safe?

It is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with Internet Explorer and ActiveX control-cache operations. A particular copy still needs verification by location, digital signature, and security history.

Is occache.dll required for ordinary Edge browsing?

No assumption should be made that ordinary modern Edge browsing requires it. The file is mainly relevant to legacy Internet Explorer, ActiveX, compatibility, installer, and enterprise software paths.

Should I enable Internet Explorer on Windows 11?

No. Windows 11 does not provide the standalone IE11 desktop application. Use Edge IE mode when the legacy site or application supports that compatibility path.

Why did SFC find nothing?

The error may come from a legacy application, damaged user profile, incompatible manually copied file, or a component that SFC does not identify as corrupt. Find the exact executable producing the message, check the application’s repair options, and review Event Viewer if necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I contact support?

Escalate when DISM and SFC fail repeatedly, malware may still be present, Windows cannot update, multiple applications fail, or an in-place repair is required. Do not keep replacing DLLs manually when the operating system itself is damaged.
