Buy the physical Nintendo Switch edition if resale, lending, gifting, collecting, or keeping the game on a cartridge matters most. Buy digital if instant access, no cartridge swapping, and a permanently installed library matter more.
Nintendo’s official listing identifies Cult of the Lamb as a Nintendo Switch game with “Nintendo Switch 2 Compatibility Information — Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch.” The official pages reviewed do not establish a separate Cult of the Lamb Switch 2 Edition, its price, its cartridge contents, or a title-specific upgrade pack. Check your regional Nintendo and retailer listings before paying a Switch 2 premium.

What is actually confirmed for Switch 2?
The verified product is the Nintendo Switch version of Cult of the Lamb. Nintendo marks that version as supported on Switch 2 and says its behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch. That is a compatibility statement, not proof of a separate Switch 2 SKU or enhanced edition.

Nintendo’s general upgrade guidance says that owners of an original Switch game, whether physical or digital, can upgrade to a Switch 2 Edition by purchasing the game’s upgrade pack from Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store, or retailers. Nintendo has not been shown to publish a Cult of the Lamb-specific upgrade-pack offer in the official listings considered here. Treat any store claim about an upgrade as something to verify for your region and edition, not as an automatic entitlement.

Choose the physical copy when ownership flexibility matters
Resale, lending, and gifting
A cartridge is the only format that gives you a conventional used-game option. You can sell it after finishing the story, lend it to someone with a compatible console, or give it as a present. The recipient uses the card rather than receiving access to your Nintendo account.
Digital purchases are not equivalent to a transferable license. They remain associated with the Nintendo account and platform ecosystem used to purchase them. If you regularly trade games, share a shelf with friends, or want a physical gift, the cartridge is the safer choice.
Collecting and keeping a copy offline
Collectors may prefer a box and card even when the game is also available digitally. A physical copy gives you a tangible item to keep and move between compatible consoles. That does not mean every future feature is on the card: updates, downloadable content, or a possible upgrade pack can still be distributed separately.

Keep the distinction clear: owning the card does not automatically include separately sold digital content or remove Nintendo’s licensing requirements for account-based purchases.
Moving between consoles or accounts
With a physical copy, the game itself travels with the card. You insert it into another compatible Switch-family console instead of redownloading the base game. Your save data and any purchased downloadable content remain subject to Nintendo’s account and console rules; the card is not a substitute for those licenses.
What physical does not guarantee
“Physical” does not tell you whether the card contains the complete game, a portion that requires a download, or a download key. The official pages used for this comparison do not specify the data layout of a Cult of the Lamb Switch 2 card. If a retailer lists a Switch 2 package, inspect the box and product description for wording such as “game-key card,” “download required,” or a stated internet requirement before buying.

No cartridge swapping
If Cult of the Lamb is part of a frequently played rotation, digital is more convenient. You can move between installed games without opening the card slot or remembering which cartridge is in the case.
Storage is the trade-off
The download occupies internal console storage or a compatible microSD card. Keep enough free space for the game, updates, and any downloadable content you intend to install. The available official listings do not publish a file-size figure, so do not rely on an unverified number when choosing a storage card.
Account dependence
Digital access follows Nintendo’s account and platform rules. If you change consoles, use multiple systems, or lose access to the purchasing account, redownload and play access depend on those rules rather than on a physical object you can carry. This is the principal ownership trade-off for the convenience of digital.

There is no confirmed title-specific upgrade pack in the official information established for this comparison. That wording tells you what to do if an upgrade appears; it does not prove that an upgrade exists for Cult of the Lamb, that it is free, or that it has a particular price. Do not buy an expensive “Switch 2” listing solely on the assumption that it includes a paid or free upgrade.
How to verify an upgrade before paying
- Open the Nintendo eShop for the country attached to your Nintendo account and search the exact title.
- Read the product name and edition label. Look for an explicit “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” or “upgrade pack,” not just a statement that the Switch version is compatible.
- Open the purchase details and check whether the pack is free, paid, or available only to owners of the original game.
- If you own a physical copy, confirm that the listing explains how cartridge ownership is recognized. If you own digital, confirm that the same Nintendo account is eligible.
- Compare the result with the publisher’s official game page and the retailer’s regional listing before completing checkout.
Is there a real Switch 2 cartridge or only a download key?
The existence of a physical Nintendo Switch edition is documented, but the official pages reviewed do not establish a separate Switch 2 cartridge, a full-game card, or a game-key card. Those are different products:
- Full cartridge: the card contains the advertised game data, though updates or additional content can still be downloaded.
- Game-key card: the card acts as a license and requires an internet download; the package should identify it clearly.
- Switch card marked compatible with Switch 2: this is the confirmed compatibility category for the Nintendo listing, not proof of a new Switch 2 edition.
When a regional listing becomes available, check the front and back of the package, the retailer’s “digital download required” language, and the storage requirement. If none of those details are stated, ask the retailer before ordering rather than assuming the card is a complete offline copy.

Nintendo says that beginning in May 2026, new Nintendo-published digital titles exclusive to Switch 2 can have a different MSRP from their physical versions. That policy is specifically about new Nintendo-published digital titles exclusive to Switch 2. It does not establish a price for this third-party Devolver title, and it does not justify assuming that the digital version will be cheaper or more expensive.

What about Unholy Alliance and Woolhaven?
Devolver’s official page documents the Unholy Alliance local co-op update and the Woolhaven expansion on Nintendo Switch. Their presence confirms that the Switch release has additional content and features; it does not establish that a particular physical package includes them or that a Switch 2 package contains a separate enhancement.
Read the contents line on the exact regional SKU. A standard cartridge, a bundle, and a digital deluxe package can have different inclusions even when they share the same base-game name.
Which format fits your situation?
| Your priority | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You may resell the game after completing it. | Physical | The cartridge is a transferable item; a digital license is not a used-game asset. |
| You lend games to family or friends. | Physical | The other player can use the card on a compatible console without your account. |
| You want the game ready from the Home menu. | Digital | No card swapping after installation. |
| You collect boxed releases. | Physical | You receive a case and cartridge to keep. |
| You have limited storage and do not know the card’s data layout. | Compare the package carefully | A physical label alone does not establish how much downloading is required. |
| You already own the Switch game. | Keep your current copy until an upgrade is verified | Nintendo’s general policy can cover either ownership type if a qualifying upgrade pack is offered. |
| You want the lowest price. | Check both regional listings | No verified title-specific Switch 2 price establishes a universal winner. |
Buying checklist for Switch 2 owners
- Confirm the region. Prices, stock, edition names, and package disclosures can differ by country.
- Identify the platform label. A Nintendo Switch game marked compatible with Switch 2 is not automatically a Switch 2 Edition.
- Check the exact contents. Look for a full cartridge, game-key card, download requirement, included expansions, and any upgrade-pack language.
- Compare total cost. For physical, include delivery and tax. For digital, include tax and possible storage expansion.
- Match the format to your ownership needs. Choose physical for resale, lending, collecting, or gifting; choose digital for instant access and no swapping.
- Save your purchase details. Keep the receipt, edition name, and account information in case Nintendo or the publisher later publishes an eligibility rule for an upgrade.
Bottom line
The safest recommendation for most ownership-focused buyers is the verified physical Nintendo Switch edition: Nintendo lists it as supported on Switch 2, and the cartridge preserves resale, lending, gifting, and collecting options. Choose digital instead when the convenience of an installed library outweighs account dependence and storage use.
Do not pay extra for a supposed Switch 2 version until your regional listing confirms the SKU, price, cartridge or game-key contents, and any upgrade-pack terms. Those details are not established by the compatibility listing alone.
