Steam Deck is the better choice for adjustable performance, extensive controls, Steam features, and PC flexibility. Switch 2 is the better fit if you want a lighter Nintendo console, a sharper 1080p handheld screen, detachable Joy-Con 2 play, and straightforward local co-op. Nintendo officially lists Cult of the Lamb as supported on Switch 2, but its store page says the game’s behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch rather than documenting a dedicated Switch 2 enhancement mode.
Quick comparison
| Category | Switch 2 | Steam Deck |
|---|---|---|
| Official status | Nintendo lists the game as supported and says behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch. | Valve marks the game Verified, with full controller support and legible interface text. |
| Handheld display | 1920×1080, up to 120Hz. | 1200×800, up to 90Hz. |
| Controls | Attached or detached Joy-Con 2, gamepad use, and mouse-control functionality. | Thumbsticks, dual trackpads, touchscreen, back buttons, and broad PC remapping. |
| Co-op features | One system supports one or two players; the Nintendo version includes local two-player play. | Shared/split-screen co-op and Remote Play Together are listed on Steam. |
| Storage listed for the game | 1.8 GB on both Switch and Switch 2. | Steam’s listing is not accompanied by a comparable storage figure in the cited material. |
| Price reference | TechRadar listed $449.99 on 31 August 2025. | TechRadar listed $399 for the base model on 31 August 2025. |
Those specifications do not establish that the two versions render the game identically or that either handheld holds a fixed frame rate in every scene. The available evidence is uneven: Switch 2 has an official compatibility statement, while Steam Deck has a current Verified designation and community performance reports.

What Nintendo actually promises on Switch 2
Nintendo’s store listing identifies Cult of the Lamb as “Supported” on Nintendo Switch 2 and gives the qualification: “Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch.” That wording matters more than the support badge by itself. The listing does not advertise a Switch 2-specific graphics mode, a new frame-rate target, higher-resolution assets, or an enhancement patch.

The current content listing includes the Unholy Alliance update. It adds local two-player co-op, with one player controlling the Lamb and the other the Goat, alongside tarot cards, relics, buildings, follower traits, quests, and other additions. Nintendo’s listing also identifies the Woolhaven downloadable content with a 22 January 2026 date. These content features are separate from any claim about Switch 2 rendering performance.
Performance: what the evidence supports
Switch 2 is compatible, not documented as enhanced
For Switch 2, the reliable statement is compatibility. Nintendo does not publish a dedicated performance target for this game on the newer console. Therefore, it is not accurate to call the game definitively locked to 60 frames per second on Switch 2, or to promise a bespoke high-resolution mode. A smoother experience is possible in practice, but the cited official material does not measure it.
The older Switch review explains the risk
Nintendo Life’s review dated 11 August 2022 assessed the original Nintendo Switch version, not a controlled 2026 Switch 2 build. It found performance generally consistent until busy scenes, when the frame rate became “real choppy.” The reviewer reported frame drops that could cause unnecessary damage or lost runs, one crash, and several softlocks. Loading screens were reported to last as long as 15 seconds.
Those observations are useful as historical context because the Switch 2 listing explicitly says behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch. They are not proof that every Switch 2 session reproduces launch-era problems. The review also praised the game’s art direction and estimated a 15–20-hour campaign, so the criticism concerns technical consistency rather than the basic appeal of the presentation.
Steam Deck has stronger current performance evidence
A 2026 Steam Deck compatibility report marks Cult of the Lamb Verified. It reports full controller support, readable interface text, and good performance with default settings. In its community sample, players commonly settled between 40 and 60 frames per second.

The same report gives indicative battery estimates for this game: about 4 hours 54 minutes at 30 fps, 2 hours 53 minutes at 40 fps, and 2 hours 48 minutes at 60 fps. These are community configuration estimates, not laboratory measurements. They should be treated as planning numbers rather than guarantees; brightness, operating-system updates, thermal conditions, battery health, and other settings can change the result.
How to choose a frame-rate target
Steam Deck gives you a choice that the Switch 2 listing does not document. If battery life matters most, a 30-fps cap corresponds to the report’s longest estimate. A 40-fps target is a middle ground, while 60 fps uses more power and produced the shortest estimate in that sample. The report’s figures should not be read as a promise that every scene will sustain those rates.
On Switch 2, use the platform’s normal handheld, tabletop, or TV mode and judge the experience on the actual game build you own. Because Nintendo publishes no Switch 2 target, avoid buying it on the assumption of a particular frame rate. If a combat run feels uneven, remember that the only detailed criticism available is from the 2022 Switch review and may not map perfectly to current Switch 2 behavior.
Visuals and screen quality
Switch 2 has the sharper handheld panel
TechRadar lists the Switch 2 handheld display at 1920×1080 with refresh rates up to 120Hz. Steam Deck’s display is listed at 1200×800 with refresh rates up to 90Hz. At their native panel specifications, Switch 2 provides more pixels and more refresh-rate headroom, so menus, small text, and the game’s fine outlines can look sharper on the Nintendo handheld.
A sharper panel does not prove that Cult of the Lamb renders internally at 1080p on Switch 2. Nintendo’s “behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch” wording does not describe a higher-resolution asset pack or an upgraded renderer. Consider the display advantage a hardware characteristic, not confirmation of a Switch 2 visual overhaul.
The art style is the same reason both versions appeal
The game’s defining look is a flat, hand-drawn style that combines cute characters with horror imagery. Nintendo Life praised that art direction even while recording technical issues on the original Switch. The visual decision between these handhelds is therefore mainly about panel sharpness, scaling, and your preferred screen size, not about choosing between different artistic presentations.
Controls and accessibility of input
Switch 2: immediate console flexibility
TechRadar describes Joy-Con 2 controllers as usable attached to the system, detached, or combined as a gamepad. The controllers also add mouse-control functionality. That makes Switch 2 particularly convenient when you move between solo handheld play, tabletop sessions, and a television with local controllers.
For crusades, the conventional sticks and buttons provide the expected movement, attacks, dodges, and menu navigation. The advantage is simplicity: the console presents one standardized control layout without requiring you to tune a PC profile before playing.
Steam Deck: more ways to map the same game
Steam Deck combines thumbsticks and a touchscreen with dual trackpads and rear buttons. Steam’s PC input layer gives you more opportunities to remap actions, create alternate layouts, or assign functions to the back buttons. The trackpads can be useful for cursor-oriented menus, while the touchscreen offers a direct alternative when a menu feels quicker to tap.
That flexibility is valuable if the default layout does not suit your hands, if you want extra shortcuts during management sections, or if you use a particular accessibility setup. It also adds complexity: a profile can be changed, reset, or accidentally made less comfortable than the default. Players who prefer a console that simply works may favor Switch 2; players who enjoy tuning controls will get more from Deck.

Co-op, local play, and remote features
Nintendo documents one-system play for one or two players. The Unholy Alliance content supports local two-player co-op, assigning the Lamb to one player and the Goat to the other. Detached Joy-Con 2 controllers make a same-room session straightforward when each person needs a controller.
Steam’s official listing tags the game for controller use, shared/split-screen co-op, and Remote Play Together. That gives Steam Deck owners a way to involve another player through Steam’s remote feature in addition to local shared play. Remote sessions depend on the host’s network and the participants’ connections, so the feature is an option rather than a guarantee of identical latency to sitting beside the console.
Portability, suspend behavior, and platform ecosystems
Why Switch 2 feels more console-like
Switch 2 is the lighter, console-first option in this comparison. Its operating environment is built around Nintendo’s handheld, tabletop, and TV transitions, and its detachable controllers support quick local play. For someone who wants to put the system to sleep, resume a run, and avoid PC-style settings menus, that simplicity is a major part of the value.
Why Steam Deck feels more like a portable PC
Steam Deck gives access to a Steam library and the configuration freedom associated with a PC version. You can choose a frame-rate target, adjust graphics options exposed by the game, remap controls, and use Steam features. The trade-off is that more choices also mean more setup and more opportunities for a setting or compatibility layer to affect the experience.

Price and value context
TechRadar’s list-price comparison dated 31 August 2025 put Switch 2 at $449.99 and the base Steam Deck at $399. These are dated reference prices, not a guarantee of current pricing, stock, bundles, regional taxes, or storage configurations. Recheck the price in your region before buying.
The hardware price is only one part of value. Switch 2’s value comes from Nintendo’s software ecosystem, local Joy-Con play, and the sharper handheld panel. Steam Deck’s value comes from access to an existing Steam library, PC settings, input remapping, and Remote Play Together. If you already own a substantial library on one platform, that ecosystem can outweigh a modest difference in hardware price.
Buying decision by player type
Choose Steam Deck if you want maximum tuning
- You want the strongest current evidence of a well-supported build: Valve’s Verified status and community reports of 40–60 fps.
- You want to select among 30, 40, and 60 fps targets while balancing battery life.
- You value trackpads, touchscreen input, rear buttons, and extensive remapping.
- You want Steam library access, PC configuration, or Remote Play Together.
- You are comfortable troubleshooting a setting when a PC-style option does not behave as expected.
Choose Switch 2 if you want the cleanest console experience
- You prefer a Nintendo handheld with attached or detached Joy-Con 2 controllers.
- You want the sharper 1920×1080 handheld panel and up to 120Hz display capability.
- You expect to play local two-player co-op in the same room.
- You value a simple suspend-and-resume workflow over graphics menus and remapping.
- You already use Nintendo’s ecosystem and want this game there.
Choose based on uncertainty if performance sensitivity is high
If uneven frame pacing or combat slowdowns would ruin a run, Steam Deck is the safer evidence-based recommendation because its current Verified/community reporting describes adjustable performance. If you are willing to accept that Switch 2 is officially supported without a published performance target, its display and console conveniences may matter more than an unconfirmed frame-rate difference.

Practical setup guidance
Before playing on Switch 2
- Confirm that the store listing identifies the game as supported on Switch 2.
- Choose handheld, tabletop, or TV mode according to where you will play; all three modes are listed for the game.
- For local co-op, prepare two compatible controllers and select the two-player option provided by the Unholy Alliance content.
- Keep expectations tied to Nintendo’s wording: compatibility is confirmed, but a dedicated Switch 2 enhancement mode is not.
Before playing on Steam Deck
- Use the game’s default controller layout first; it is the baseline associated with the Verified report.
- If you prefer a different grip, remap the thumbsticks, trackpads, touchscreen, or back buttons through Steam’s controller configuration.
- Select a frame-rate and refresh-rate target that matches your battery priority. The community estimates provide 30, 40, and 60 fps reference points.
- Test the layout in both a management area and a crusade before saving a custom profile, because menu and combat needs can differ.
Troubleshooting and expectations
If Switch 2 play feels uneven
Do not treat the 2022 Nintendo Life findings as a current controlled benchmark, but use them to identify the symptoms that matter: choppy busy scenes, damage taken during drops, crashes, softlocks, and long loading screens. Save progress whenever the game allows it, restart after an apparent softlock, and check for game and system updates. If the problem persists, record whether it occurs in a particular crowded area or after a long session; that information is more useful than assuming a universal frame-rate cap.
If Steam Deck battery life is shorter than expected
The 4h54m, 2h53m, and 2h48m figures are community estimates at 30, 40, and 60 fps respectively. A shorter result can be caused by screen brightness, wireless use, background downloads, system updates, battery condition, or a different performance profile. Lowering the chosen frame-rate target is the most direct change supported by the cited estimates, but no figure should be treated as guaranteed.
Final recommendation
For most technically minded players, Steam Deck is the stronger Cult of the Lamb platform: it has a current Verified designation, reported 40–60-fps flexibility, extensive control remapping, Steam features, and a broader PC environment. Switch 2 is the better lifestyle choice for Nintendo fans who prioritize a 1080p handheld display, detachable Joy-Con 2 play, local co-op, and a streamlined console interface.
The decisive caveat is documentation. Nintendo officially supports the game on Switch 2 but describes its behavior as consistent with Switch and does not publish a dedicated performance target. Steam Deck therefore wins on tunability and measured community evidence; Switch 2 wins on hardware presentation and console convenience. Pick the platform whose strengths match the way you actually play rather than assuming either version has a universally guaranteed frame rate.
