It is a much harder recommendation for anyone who expects clear objectives, a conventional tutorial, or steady narrative exposition: uncertainty is the game’s central tool, and it can feel as much like guesswork and repetition as discovery.
What kind of game is Cultist Simulator?
Developed and published by Weather Factory, Cultist Simulator is a single-player occult narrative card game originally released on May 31, 2018. Its 1920s-themed world revolves around hidden gods, secret histories, and forbidden mysteries. Weather Factory describes it as “a game of apocalypse and yearning” on the official Steam listing.

Rather than deliver its fiction as a conventional, continuously explained plot, the game puts cards and their interactions at the center. You learn what the world permits by trying combinations and interpreting incomplete clues. The pleasure is not simply collecting lore; it is working out how the system and its mysteries fit together.

When the design clicks
The strongest case for the game is the feeling that you are investigating an occult system rather than following a set of instructions. Its writing, atmosphere, and depth were recurring strengths in critic responses. PC Gamer’s Christopher Livingston called it a dark, engrossing, challenging narrative card and crafting game in a review published June 1, 2018. On Metacritic, RPG Fan praised the whole as greater than its parts, while COGconnected highlighted the writing and setting.
#1 Best Overall
- It's hard work running a Cthulhu cult!
- INCOMPETENCE ABOUNDS: Your underlings are useless, madness is imminent, and a compelling sacrifice is hard to find. (and these are just your Monday problems.)
- ALIEN GODS R US: What could be finer than inviting horrors from beyond space and time to ravage the Earth? So! Fun!
- THE STARS ALIGN: Lovecraftian humor keeps it light. Simple rules invite everyone to play. It's time to awaken some evil!
- 2-8 Players | Ages 8+ | 20+ Minutes Playing Time
That fragmented approach can make a discovery feel earned: a clue is not just exposition handed to you, but part of a pattern you have to notice. If experimentation and ambiguity are what you want from a game, the lack of hand-holding can be a meaningful part of the appeal.
When uncertainty turns into friction
The same design can leave you unsure whether you have found a useful lead or merely failed to understand the rules. COGconnected’s listed response, for example, praised the writing and setting but found it difficult to form a coherent narrative from the fragments. Other critic excerpts objected to inaccessibility and minimal presentation. CD-Action praised the atmosphere and depth while describing later grinding as tedious.
Rank #2
- Social deduction game
- Great for larger groups and game nights
- Beautiful characters and cards create the atmosphere
- 8 to 24 players, ages 13 and up
That distinction matters: opacity is not automatically satisfying because it is intentional. A breakthrough can feel exciting when experimentation teaches you something; repeating routines without a new insight can feel like busywork. Your tolerance for trial and error, rather than a simple label of “hard” or “easy,” is the best guide to whether this will suit you.

- COOPERATIVE POKER — A fresh take on Texas Hold 'em where you all win or lose together. No betting, no bluffing, no individual winner — just your gang against the vaults.
- COMMUNICATE WITHOUT WORDS — You can't say a thing about your hand. Signal your hand's strength by claiming numbered poker chips and watching how they move around the table. Reading your teammates is everything.
- EASY TO LEARN, HARD TO MASTER — No poker knowledge needed; a hand-ranking card is included and most groups play within minutes. Four difficulty modes plus 20 challenge and specialist cards add depth as you improve.
- BUILT FOR GAME NIGHT — Plays in about 20 minutes with 3 to 6 players, ages 10 and up. Quick rounds and rising tension make it ideal for families, friends, and party groups. Difficulty scales up as more players join.
- AWARD-RECOGNIZED CO-OP — A Kennerspiel des Jahres recommendation-list pick, ASTRA Best Toys Play Award finalist, and Grown-Up Toy of the Year finalist. From Thames & Kosmos, makers of the hit co-op card game The Crew.
| Source | Score snapshot | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Metacritic critic aggregate | 71/100 from 17 critic reviews listed for the 2018 release; labeled “Mixed or Average” | A historical critic-review aggregate, not a current review of later platform versions. |
| Metacritic user ratings | 7.0/10 from 57 ratings at the captured listing | A listing snapshot; the count and score can change. |
| Steam base game | 79% positive from 5,333 English-language reviews; 79% positive among 89 recent reviews, captured October 8, 2026 | A volatile purchaser recommendation snapshot. Steam notes that off-topic review periods were excluded. |
The figures above are not interchangeable: Metacritic aggregates critic reviews, while Steam’s percentage summarizes user recommendations under Steam’s rating rules. Neither score resolves the game’s central trade-off between evocative discovery and the friction of learning by experimentation.
Who is likely to enjoy it?
- Consider it if you like deciphering systems, following incomplete clues, and building a narrative from scattered details.
- Be cautious if you want a clear tutorial, visible objectives, a reliably steady pace, or a story explained in a continuous stream.
- Think about repetition as well as difficulty: the question is not only whether you can work out what to do, but whether repeated activity remains engaging while you do.
- Judge presentation by your own preferences: its atmospheric writing and minimal interface may appeal to players who value mood, but the spare presentation can make the experience less accessible to others.
How to approach guides without spoiling the discovery
Steam Community results include both guides scoped to the base game and a highly rated guide explicitly marked with a spoiler warning; Steam Support says community-created guides can help with gameplay and configuration issues. If you want help without giving away the discoveries, start with a clearly spoiler-light orientation and reserve a full walkthrough for when you actively want answers. Check whether a guide covers the base game or an expansion before following it.

Does The Exile change the recommendation?
The Exile is a separate, story-focused expansion released May 27, 2020. Its official Steam page says it requires the base game and describes a different structure: flight across Europe and beyond. It is not simply more of the same progression, so the base-game verdict should not be treated as a review of this distinct mode. Steam’s listing showed 73% positive from 193 user reviews when captured in 2026; that is a changeable storefront snapshot, not a critic score.
