Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutecv100.dll is an old OpenCV 1.0 application DLL, not a Windows system file. When Windows reports that cv100.dll is missing or could not be loaded, restore the application that installed it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
OpenCV 1.0 was an Intel computer-vision library released in October 2006. Its older Windows runtime commonly included related files such as cxcore100.dll, highgui100.dll, and ml100.dll. A camera utility, imaging program, computer-vision application, game, or Max/cv.jit component may depend on this group of files.
Typical messages include:
- “The program can’t start because cv100.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application has failed to start because cv100.dll was not found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because cv100.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading cv100.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “cv100.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
Fix 1: Identify the program that needs cv100.dll
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
The filename alone cannot identify the correct application. Start with the program named in the error window, then check whether another application launched it.
- Read the complete error dialog and note the application name.
- Open Start, type the application name, right-click it, and select Open file location.
- In the shortcut folder, right-click the shortcut and choose Properties.
- Check the Target field to find the actual executable path.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Search the folder for:
cxcore100.dllhighgui100.dllml100.dll- other files whose names end in
100.dll
If the error appears when launching a game, identify the game rather than treating Windows as the owner of the file. If it appears with a camera, scanner, or imaging utility, note the hardware vendor and the installed application name.

Do not assume that a copy of cv100.dll found in C:WindowsSystem32 belongs to Windows. The normal location is beside the application executable or in an application-specific DLL search path.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the application
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
This is the most likely solution because cv100.dll ships with the program that installed it. A repair restores deleted files while preserving the application when the installer supports that operation.
Try Windows app repair
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If there is no Advanced options or Repair button, use the program’s own installer:
- Open the application’s installation media, vendor download, or store page.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if offered.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If repair does not work, uninstall and reinstall the application from its original vendor, game store, or installation media. Close the program first, and back up its settings or project files if necessary.

Current OpenCV packages use different DLL naming and compatibility arrangements, and they will not normally satisfy a program linked specifically to the old cv100.dll interface.
A successful repair should make the original program launch normally. If a new message names cxcore100.dll, highgui100.dll, a Visual C++ runtime, or another file, the first DLL was only one part of the application’s dependency set. Reinstall the complete application package instead of copying individual files.
Fix 3: Verify a game’s files
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
If a game reports the error, its launcher may have removed or detected a damaged runtime file.
Epic Games
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the game.
- Select the three dots beside the game.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for the check and replacement process to finish.
- Launch the game again.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the game and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish.
- Start the game again.
If verification repeatedly removes the same file, check antivirus history before launching again. The game may be restoring a file that Windows Security immediately quarantines.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine an old DLL when an installer, update, or cleanup tool changes it. Restore a file only when the application and its installer are trusted.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security > Windows Security.
- Choose Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
cv100.dlland the affected application. - Open the event and review its location and detection details.
- If the file came from the original trusted application installation, use Actions > Restore or the equivalent permitted action.
- Scan the complete application folder.
- Launch the program.
If the file came from an unknown archive or an unofficial replacement, do not restore or allow it. Remove it and reinstall the application from its original source. A familiar filename does not prove that the file is safe.
If Protection History contains no matching event, antivirus quarantine is less likely. Continue with application repair or reinstall rather than adding a broad exclusion.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 10 minutes
The available historical metadata for cv100.dll points mainly to a 32-bit OpenCV 1.0-era build, including a listed 1.0.0.1 build. That information is third-party build metadata, not an official OpenCV specification.
A 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit DLL. A different OpenCV generation is also not an interchangeable replacement.
To check the application architecture:
- Open the application’s installation folder.
- Right-click the main executable and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and record the available product information.
- If the vendor documents system requirements, check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Check whether the application has separate
x86,x64, orbinfolders.
Do not copy a 64-bit file over a 32-bit file, or the reverse. The correct build must come from the application’s original installer or vendor package. If a repaired installation still reports that the file is not designed to run on Windows, the DLL may be the wrong architecture, corrupted, or missing another dependency.
Fix 6: Repair a separate Visual C++ runtime dependency
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Visual C++ Redistributable is relevant only if the error also names a file such as MSVCP, MSVCR, or another Microsoft C++ runtime DLL. It does not install cv100.dll.
Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable download page and select the architecture that matches the application:

Run the installer, choose Repair if available, restart Windows, and test the affected program. If the application is 32-bit on 64-bit Windows, the x86 package is the relevant package.
If the error still names cv100.dll, return to the application repair or reinstall step. Installing Visual C++ cannot restore a missing OpenCV application file.
Fix 7: Restore Windows components only when other Windows features are failing
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
cv100.dll is not normally a protected Windows component. DISM and System File Checker repair Windows files, not third-party DLLs installed by an application. Use them when Windows itself is showing broader corruption, such as broken built-in tools, repeated system errors, or damaged Windows features.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
If either command reports errors it could not repair, restart and repeat the process once after Windows Update has completed. Do not expect SFC to recreate the application’s OpenCV runtime.
If manually comparing Windows components and repeating DISM/SFC is difficult, Outbyte PC Repair can show what it finds in a free scan; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when cv100.dll belongs to that program.
Fix 8: Reinstall a related driver only when the vendor bundled the application
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A driver reinstall is not a standard remedy for cv100.dll. Use this step only when the affected camera, scanner, or imaging vendor explicitly supplied the OpenCV application with its driver package.
- Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Cameras, Imaging devices, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and record the provider and version.
- Visit the hardware vendor’s official support page.
- Download the package for your exact device and Windows architecture.
- Close the affected application.
- Run the vendor installer and restart Windows.
- Test the application.
Do not use Device Manager’s generic driver search as a way to obtain cv100.dll. It updates device drivers, not application runtimes.
If tracking down several device-driver versions manually is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers its free scan identifies; installation is performed by the full version. It is optional, and the hardware vendor’s complete application package remains the correct source for a bundled OpenCV DLL.
Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent change
Time needed: 20–40 minutes
Use System Restore when the error began immediately after an application update, cleanup operation, or installation and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove applications or updates installed after the selected restore point. Afterward, repair or reinstall the affected program if its files remain incomplete.

Do not download cv100.dll from random websites
A standalone DLL from an unverified archive may contain malware, be the wrong architecture, belong to a different build, or simply hide the real problem. Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is generally wrong because the application should load its matching DLL from its own installation directory.
Do not run regsvr32 cv100.dll as a general repair. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer; there is no reliable evidence that this old OpenCV runtime is a self-registering COM component. Registration will not repair a missing companion DLL or an incompatible application build.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the original application installer, the game launcher’s verification feature, the hardware vendor’s official package, or Microsoft’s official runtime pages when a separate Microsoft dependency is named.
What usually caused the error
| Likely cause | Appropriate response |
|---|---|
| Incomplete installation or deleted application files | Repair, verify, or reinstall the original program |
| Antivirus quarantine | Review Protection History and restore only a trusted original file |
| Wrong 32-bit or 64-bit build | Obtain the matching application package |
Missing cxcore100.dll or another dependency |
Restore the complete runtime set |
| Corrupt or unofficial replacement | Remove it and reinstall from the original source |
| Windows component corruption | Use DISM and SFC only when broader Windows problems exist |
| Malware or disk damage | Scan the system, check disk health, and restore known-good files |
If cv100.dll still will not load
Work through this checklist:
- Confirm which executable is requesting the file.
- Confirm that
cv100.dllis beside that executable or in the vendor’s documented DLL path. - Check for
cxcore100.dll,highgui100.dll, and other OpenCV 1.0 companion files. - Verify that the application and DLL have compatible architectures.
- Check whether a second missing dependency appears after repair.
- Remove unofficial DLL copies and reinstall the complete application.
- Check antivirus history and permissions on the application folder.
- Try the application from a new Windows user account if the failure may involve a damaged profile.
- Use System Restore if the problem began directly after an update or cleanup.
- Scan for malware and check disk health if files continue disappearing.
FAQ
Is cv100.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with the old OpenCV 1.0 application runtime. Windows does not normally install or maintain it.
Which program needs cv100.dll?
The filename alone cannot identify the program. The application named in the error, Event Viewer, and the folder containing related OpenCV files provide the answer.
Will installing Visual C++ fix cv100.dll?
Only if the application also reports a separate Visual C++ runtime error. Visual C++ Redistributable does not install cv100.dll.
Can I copy cv100.dll into System32?
No. Use the matching file from the original application package and keep it in the application’s expected folder.
Is the “not designed to run on Windows” message proof that Windows is damaged?
No. It can indicate corruption, wrong architecture, an incompatible replacement, or a missing dependency. Reinstall the application before attempting broad Windows repair.
Should I reinstall my graphics or camera driver?
Only when the vendor explicitly bundled this OpenCV runtime with that device package. Driver reinstall is not a general fix for this application DLL.
What is the safest fix?
Identify the parent application, then repair, verify, or reinstall that application from its original source. That restores the matching DLL set instead of creating a partial or incompatible installation.
