lfbmp13n.dll is a genuine 32-bit LEADTOOLS bitmap filter used by older Windows applications. If lfbmp13n.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair or reinstall the specific application that installed it rather than downloading a loose DLL or copying one into System32.
The file belongs to the old LEADTOOLS 13 runtime from LEAD Technologies. It is an application component, not a normal Windows system file. The affected program may also need other LEADTOOLS files, so replacing only lfbmp13n.dll often leaves the application broken.
Fix lfbmp13n.dll errors in order
Work through these fixes from top to bottom. Start by identifying the application named in the error. That program is the most likely source of the missing file.
1. Identify the parent application
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Read the complete error window before closing it. Note the application name, executable name, and any displayed path. A message from an old document scanner, fax utility, imaging program, or enterprise application is more useful than the DLL filename alone.

If the error disappears too quickly:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an Error recorded at the time the program failed.
- Open the event and check Faulting application name and Faulting module name.
You can also inspect the shortcut:
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read Target and Start in.
- Use that folder to locate the application’s other files.
Historically, lfbmp13n.dll has appeared with IBM Rational products, including Rational SoDA and Rational Rose RealTime. Kofax FraudOne documentation also lists it among the files in an application binary directory. Older imaging, fax, scanning, and document-management software may contain the same LEADTOOLS runtime.
Do not assume that every copy belongs to the same product. Several old applications can each have their own copy in separate program folders.
2. Repair the affected application
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Use Windows’ built-in repair option first if the program supports it:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the program that reports the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If the program is a traditional desktop application, use Control Panel:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer’s prompts.
- Restart Windows if requested.
A successful repair restores the application’s complete runtime set, including the matching bitmap filter and any companion LEADTOOLS libraries. Test the exact function that previously failed, such as opening a BMP image or starting the application.
If there is no repair option, continue with a clean reinstall.
3. Reinstall the original program
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Reinstalling the parent application is the definitive fix when its files are damaged, incomplete, or incompatible.

- Back up the program’s documents, profiles, templates, and license information.
- Obtain the installer from the application publisher, your organization’s software repository, original recovery media, or a legitimate current installer.
- Uninstall the damaged application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or from Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official installer.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator if the program requires elevated installation.
- Start the application and test it.
Do not install a similarly named LEADTOOLS package from a different product release. Current LEADTOOLS downloads are not evidence of a standalone, compatible lfbmp13n.dll package for an old application. The correct files are normally redistributed with the application that needs them.

4. Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Antivirus software may quarantine or delete a legitimate old DLL, or it may remove an altered copy during malware cleanup. Check the event before restoring anything.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Filter or review recent detections.
- Open an item associated with the affected application.
- Confirm the original file path and the application that owns it.
- Scan the application folder and the whole computer.
Restore the file only when the application installation and path are trusted and the detection has been verified as a false positive. If the file was in an unexpected temporary folder, a download directory, or a suspicious program location, do not restore it. Remove the unsafe copy and reinstall the application from its official source instead.
After restoring a verified file, launch the program. If the same error returns, the runtime may be incomplete or another LEADTOOLS dependency may also be missing. Reinstall the application rather than repeatedly restoring individual files.

5. Check 32-bit and dependency compatibility
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
lfbmp13n.dll is a historical 32-bit Win32 component. A 32-bit application can normally run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs the matching 32-bit application runtime.
Check these points:
- Keep the DLL in the application’s original folder if the installer placed it there.
- Do not replace a product’s copy with one taken from another application.
- Do not substitute a LEADTOOLS 12, 14, or newer file.
- Do not rename another DLL to
lfbmp13n.dll. - Do not overwrite one application’s copy with a copy from
System32or another program directory. - Treat different version and size listings found online as non-interchangeable.
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that lfbmp13n.dll itself is absent. It can mean the file exists but one of its dependent LEADTOOLS or Microsoft runtime files is missing.

If the error names a Microsoft runtime separately, install that runtime only from Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Visual C++ packages do not replace lfbmp13n.dll.
6. Use compatibility settings for an old application
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
A legacy program may fail on Windows 10 or Windows 11 even after its files are restored.

- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version only if the application publisher recommends it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the program again.
You can also run Microsoft’s compatibility troubleshooter:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
- Select Run.
- Choose the affected application and follow the prompts.
Compatibility mode cannot repair a deleted runtime. Use it only after repairing or reinstalling the parent application.
7. Repair Windows components when other programs are also failing
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use DISM and SFC when Windows has broader corruption symptoms, such as several built-in tools failing, damaged system files, or repeated component errors. These commands do not download or restore an arbitrary third-party LEADTOOLS DLL.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft documents this sequence in its System File Checker and DISM guidance. DISM and SFC repair Windows components, not the files bundled with an old third-party application.

8. Update or reinstall related drivers only when symptoms point there
Time needed: 10–25 minutes
A printer, scanner, fax device, or imaging application may depend on an old driver, but a driver update does not normally supply lfbmp13n.dll. Use this step when the problem began after a device change or when Device Manager reports a separate fault.

- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Imaging devices, Printers, Cameras, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
For a clean driver replacement:
- In Device Manager, right-click the affected device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Select the option to remove the driver package only if you have a known-good replacement from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the official driver for the exact device and Windows architecture.

9. Use System Restore after a recent change

- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Select Finish.
Microsoft’s System Restore instructions explain what the process changes. Personal documents are not normally removed, but recently installed applications and drivers may be affected.

Do not download lfbmp13n.dll from a random DLL archive. A replacement may contain malware, belong to the wrong LEADTOOLS release, use the wrong architecture, or fail because companion files are missing. Public catalog entries may list different historical versions and sizes, but they are not authoritative release documentation.
Do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32 as a first-line repair. A DLL in System32 is not automatically a Windows component, and placing a third-party runtime there can create conflicts between applications.
Do not run regsvr32 for this file. regsvr32 is intended for registering DLL-based OLE and ActiveX components. A LEADTOOLS bitmap filter is a runtime library, not normally a COM registration target, so registration will not reconstruct its dependencies.
Do not disable antivirus protection to force an unknown DLL into the application folder.

If every repair fails, identify the executable that requests the DLL with a reputable dependency-analysis tool or Process Monitor. Check whether the file exists in the application folder and whether a companion module is absent. The publisher or your organization’s software administrator can then provide the correct complete runtime package.

FAQ
Is lfbmp13n.dll a Windows 11 or Windows 10 file?
No evidence shows that Microsoft distributes it as part of Windows. It is an old third-party LEADTOOLS bitmap filter bundled with applications.
Can I fix it with SFC?
Not directly. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It does not provide an application’s LEADTOOLS runtime. Repair or reinstall the parent program first.
