PlayStation 5: check the disc drive and bundle
The December 2 roundup reported a PS5 Slim for $424 at Amazon and a $374 GameStop bundle pairing the PS5 Slim Digital Edition with NBA 2K25. WIRED’s 2024 roundup also listed a PS5 Slim Digital Console at $374 and a disc version at $424; these are separate historical listings, not a single standardized offer.
Choose the console format that fits your library
- Disc version: Its optical drive supports physical games, which can matter if you already own discs or want to buy physical copies.
- Digital Edition: It has no optical drive. It suits a buyer committed to digital purchases, but cannot play physical game discs.
Sony’s November 22–December 2, 2024 promotion covered PS5 consoles, PS VR2, DualSense controllers, Pulse Elite headsets, Pulse Explore earbuds, console covers, selected PS5, PS4 and PC titles, PlayStation Plus and merchandise. Sony said offers varied by region and retailer. The announcement also included promotion-specific PlayStation Plus discounts: people joining during the sale could save up to 30% on a 12-month membership, while eligible existing members had specified upgrade discounts. Those terms have expired.

Nintendo Switch: UK and Ireland offers had separate deadlines
Nintendo UK’s November 18, 2024 announcement covered Nintendo Store UK and Ireland offers, subject to stock. Bundles included selected Switch OLED, Switch Lite and standard Switch hardware with a selected game and a 12-month individual Nintendo Switch Online membership.
Games, memberships and accessories
- Nintendo listed a 30% first-time discount on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom among selected digital game offers.
- A 30% offer on the Nintendo 64 Controller for Nintendo Switch was exclusive to Nintendo Store and Nintendo Switch Online members.
- The promotion included a two-membership offer under specified purchase conditions and 30% off selected accessories, such as controllers and cases.
- Offer end dates differed: some ended December 1, while others ran until January 12. The membership bonus excluded some third-party code purchases.
These were Nintendo Store promotions for the UK and Ireland; they should not be treated as worldwide offers or as one sale with a single expiration date.

Xbox: US announcement covered consoles, controllers and games
In a November 15, 2024 Xbox Wire announcement, Microsoft advertised $50 off select Xbox Series X|S consoles, $10 off select Xbox Wireless Controllers, up to 55% off select Xbox games and discounts on over 1,000 games. Select PC digital games were advertised at up to 60% off. Many game offers were due to end December 2.
The announcement was explicitly US-only. Kevin Hooper, Xbox’s Senior Manager, Global Campaigns, wrote: “Please Note: Discounts in this article are US-only – please check your local version of Xbox.com or Microsoft Store for deals in your region.” Microsoft also cautioned that console and accessory offers varied by market and retailer. WIRED’s 2024 roundup described its listed Xbox Series X and Series S consoles as disc-less versions, a detail worth checking against any particular bundle.

PC and gaming peripherals: separate game sales from hardware deals
Microsoft’s 2024 promotion included up to 60% off select PC digital games. The December 2 roundup and WIRED’s 2024 coverage also featured PC and console peripherals, including the Alienware AW3423DWF QD-OLED monitor and HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless headset. Those examples identify products that appeared in historical roundups; they do not establish current availability or price.
WIRED’s review team reported that its HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless music-playback test lasted 325 hours before the headphones stopped. That is WIRED’s attributed test result, not a claim of independent testing here, and music playback is not the same condition as every gaming use.

How to judge a gaming deal before buying
- Confirm the exact model and format. Check whether a console has a disc drive, whether the product is a particular generation or edition, and what game or membership the bundle includes.
- Check compatibility with your setup. Confirm that a game, controller, headset or other accessory works with your platform and with the library or equipment you already own.
- Compare the total offer with a dated reference. Distinguish a console-only price from a bundle and account for any included membership or game before comparing totals.
- Verify the seller, region, stock and end date. Platform announcements and retailer listings can have different terms. Nintendo’s 2024 UK and Ireland offers, for example, had multiple deadlines, while Xbox and PlayStation both warned of regional variation.
- Decide whether the format matches how you play. A digital-only console can be a poor fit if you rely on physical games; a disc-equipped model may be unnecessary if your purchases are all digital.
