Does cyberpsychosis happen to everyone? No. In the Cyberpunk universe, cyberpsychosis is a fictional concept associated with cybernetic augmentation and Night City. It is not established as a universal outcome for people who use implants, and it is not a real medical diagnosis.
Real psychosis is a clinical phenomenon involving some loss of contact with reality. It can affect some people for many different reasons, but it is not inevitable. If you are worried about experiences such as hallucinations, fixed false beliefs or a rapid change in your ability to function, speak with a qualified mental-health professional or a GP rather than trying to diagnose yourself from game lore.

What “cyberpsychosis” means in Cyberpunk
The term belongs to the fictional setting created for the Cyberpunk franchise. The official Cyberpunk 2077 material presents Night City as a world shaped in part by body modification and implants, and uses “cyberpsychosis” as part of its franchise language. That establishes a piece of world-building, not a medical condition recognized by health-care systems.
A fictional label, not a diagnosis
The American Psychiatric Association describes the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as a manual of recognized mental disorders and diagnostic criteria. The DSM-5-TR was published in 2022. The clinical guidance considered here from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the NHS discusses psychosis, its symptoms, possible causes and assessment; it does not establish “cyberpsychosis” as a diagnosis.

The careful conclusion is therefore limited but clear: cyberpsychosis is a fictional label, while psychosis is a real clinical phenomenon. That distinction matters because a dramatic game concept should not be used as a checklist for a person’s mental state. A term can be meaningful inside a story without mapping neatly onto a real diagnostic category.
Does the fiction say every augmented person develops it?
No universal rule is established by the official franchise description. It identifies the setting, the game and the role of augmentation, but it does not provide evidence that every person with cybernetic modification develops cyberpsychosis. Questions about how common it is in a particular story, mission or character belong to interpretation of the fiction, not to population medicine.
Even within a fictional universe, characters may have different histories, levels of augmentation and narrative roles. A character’s crisis therefore cannot be converted into a general rule for every Night City resident, much less for real people who use medical devices or have other forms of body modification.
What real psychosis is
NIMH defines psychosis as “a collection of symptoms that affect the mind, where there has been some loss of contact with reality.” Two examples it gives are delusions and hallucinations.
Symptoms are experiences, not a self-diagnosis
A hallucination is a perception that occurs without an external source; a delusion is a strongly held belief that does not fit available evidence. Experiencing one unusual thought, a vivid dream or a moment of confusion does not by itself establish psychosis. Clinicians look at the overall pattern, its timing, severity, effect on daily life and possible explanations.
Psychosis can occur in different mental-health and medical contexts. The word describes a group of symptoms, not one single disease and not a guaranteed stage of any person’s life. The same outward behavior can have different explanations, so a clinician needs context rather than a fictional label.

There is no single cause
NIMH states, “There is no one cause of psychosis.” Its guidance describes a complex combination of genetic risk, differences in brain development and stressors or trauma. It also lists possible contributors such as severe sleep deprivation, some prescription medicines and alcohol or drug misuse.

These are possible contributors, not a universal mechanism. A person can have psychotic symptoms without the explanation being obvious at first, which is one reason professional assessment is important. Conversely, exposure to stress, poor sleep or a medicine does not mean psychosis will follow.
“Possible contributor” also does not mean “proven cause” in an individual case. A careful assessment considers when symptoms began, what else changed, and whether a physical or mental-health issue could be involved. It avoids the simple but unsafe assumption that one event, substance or technology explains everything.
How often does psychosis occur?
NIMH reports study estimates that between 15 and 100 people out of 100,000 develop psychosis each year. This figure, from NIMH public guidance accessed in October 2026, is an estimate of annual occurrence. It is not a lifetime probability, a prediction for a particular individual or a measurement of fictional cyberpsychosis.
Why the range is so wide
An annual estimate can vary because studies use different populations, definitions, methods and periods. The range should be read as evidence that psychosis occurs in a minority of people, while also recognizing that counting cases precisely is difficult. NIMH explicitly notes that it is difficult to know how many people experience psychosis.

What the number does not mean
- It does not mean that 15 to 100 people in every 100,000 will develop symptoms in a fixed year.
- It does not tell you the chance that you personally will experience psychosis over your lifetime.
- It does not measure the prevalence of cyberpsychosis in Night City or among players of Cyberpunk 2077.
- It should not be converted into a prediction based on an implant, a game choice or a fictional character’s story.
- It is not a rate for all unusual perceptions, intrusive thoughts or episodes of confusion.
Cyberpunk cyberpsychosis versus clinical psychosis
| Question | Cyberpunk cyberpsychosis | Clinical psychosis |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A fictional franchise concept associated with cybernetic augmentation and Night City. | A collection of symptoms involving some loss of contact with reality. |
| What supports the term? | Official franchise and promotional world-building. | Clinical guidance from NIMH and the NHS, within established mental-health care. |
| Is it inevitable? | The official setting description does not establish that every augmented person develops it. | No. It affects some people and is not an inevitable human experience. |
| What causes it? | Its causes are matters of fictional lore and vary by interpretation of the setting. | Possible contributors include genetic risk, brain-development differences, stress or trauma, sleep deprivation, some medicines and alcohol or drug misuse. |
| How is it identified? | Through the story’s own fictional rules. | Through a professional assessment of symptoms and possible causes; there is no single positive diagnostic test. |
| What should a concerned person do? | Treat it as a story concept and avoid using it to label real people. | Contact a qualified mental-health professional or GP, preferably promptly. |
The key comparison is not whether a fictional symptom “looks like” a clinical one. It is whether the term has a real diagnostic definition and evidence behind it. Cyberpunk’s concept serves storytelling about technology, identity and control. Clinical psychosis is evaluated in a person’s actual circumstances, with attention to health, safety and possible causes.
How professionals assess possible psychosis
The NHS says there is no test that positively diagnoses psychosis. Assessment considers what the person is experiencing and what might be causing it. NIMH likewise advises a thorough assessment by a qualified professional.
- Describe the experiences. A clinician may ask what happened, when it began, how often it occurs and how certain the person feels about the experience.
- Review functioning and safety. Changes in sleep, work or school, relationships, self-care and the ability to stay safe help show the level of support needed.
- Consider possible causes. The assessment may examine stress or trauma, sleep loss, medicines, alcohol or other drugs, medical factors and relevant personal or family history.
- Decide on care. The professional can explain the working assessment, discuss treatment or monitoring and arrange follow-up. A symptom alone is not a diagnosis.
This process is why a game-based checklist cannot answer whether a person has psychosis. It also explains why two people with superficially similar experiences may receive different assessments and recommendations. Assessment is not a single quiz result; it is a conversation and review that may change as more information becomes available.

Write down concrete changes, when they started and any medicines, substances, sleep disruption or major stress around the same time. Sharing that information can help a professional understand the situation, but it should not replace an appointment.
When to seek help
Prompt professional advice
The NHS recommends speaking to a GP promptly because earlier treatment can be more effective. Contact a GP or mental-health service if you or someone close to you is experiencing possible hallucinations, strongly held beliefs that others cannot share, marked confusion or a rapid decline in day-to-day functioning. Explain the concrete experiences rather than leading with the fictional label “cyberpsychosis.”
Urgent safety concerns
If someone may harm themselves or another person, cannot care for basic needs, or is in immediate danger, use the emergency or crisis service available in your country. Do not delay urgent help while trying to decide whether a game term applies. If speaking to services on someone else’s behalf, describe observable behavior and immediate risks as clearly as possible.

What not to do
- Do not diagnose yourself or another person from a character’s behavior, a forum list or a game mechanic.
- Do not assume that an implant, medication, lack of sleep or stressful event proves a specific cause.
- Do not stop prescribed medicine or abruptly change alcohol or drug use without professional advice.
- Do not treat a game, supplement, device or online quiz as a substitute for clinical assessment.
Why the distinction matters for players
Cyberpunk 2077 uses a speculative setting to explore identity, technology and the consequences of extreme augmentation. Fiction can make a mental-health idea vivid, but narrative shorthand is not a diagnostic standard. Characters are written to serve a story, while clinicians must account for a real person’s history, safety, health and circumstances.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you are asking because a character appears detached from reality, the useful answer is about that character’s arc and the rules of the fictional world. If you are asking because of your own thoughts, perceptions or behavior, switch frameworks: describe what is happening to a health professional and let that person assess it.
Where the fictional term comes from
The official franchise page identifies Cyberpunk 2077 as a game set in Night City and lists supported platforms. Its official buy page provides platform and store selection, with some content dependent on the relevant edition or expansion. Those pages are appropriate places to learn where the fictional term appears; they are not mental-health resources.
Frequently asked questions
Is cyberpsychosis real?
It is real as a fictional concept in the Cyberpunk franchise. It is not established as a clinical diagnosis. Real psychosis is a different term used for a collection of symptoms involving some loss of contact with reality.
Can cybernetic implants cause psychosis?
The official game material does not establish a medical cause-and-effect rule. In real health care, possible contributors to psychosis include genetic risk, brain-development differences, stress or trauma, sleep deprivation, some prescription medicines and alcohol or drug misuse. A qualified professional must assess an individual situation.
Does having hallucinations mean I have psychosis?
Not necessarily. A symptom alone is not a diagnosis, and experiences can have different explanations. The NHS says there is no single test that positively diagnoses psychosis, so discuss concerning or persistent experiences with a GP or mental-health professional.
Best Value
How common is psychosis?
NIMH cites study estimates of 15 to 100 people per 100,000 developing psychosis each year and notes that it is difficult to know the exact number. This is an annual population estimate, not a personal lifetime forecast and not a rate for cyberpsychosis.
What should I do if I am worried now?
Contact a GP or qualified mental-health service promptly, especially after a rapid change in functioning or reality-testing. If there is immediate danger or a risk of harm, use local emergency or crisis services. Do not wait to prove that a fictional label applies.
Bottom line on “Does cyberpsychosis happen to everyone?”
No. Cyberpsychosis is a fictional Cyberpunk concept, and the franchise material does not establish it as an unavoidable result of augmentation. Real psychosis is different: it is a set of symptoms that some people experience, with multiple possible causes and no single diagnostic test. The right response to real concerns is prompt assessment by a GP or qualified mental-health professional, not self-diagnosis through game lore.
