Cyberpunk 2077 Beginner’s Guide: Builds, Combat, and Exploration

Start with a playstyle, not a supposedly perfect build. In the current 2.0-and-later version of Cyberpunk 2077, your attributes, perks, operating system, weapons and cyberware are designed to work as one system. Pick a combat loop you can perform comfortably, spend early points and money on that loop, and let missions teach you what to refine. A practical first character can focus on direct gunplay, blades and mobility, stealth, or netrunning, with a dependable backup weapon in every case.

This guide covers the systems changed by Update 2.0 (released September 21, 2023), the later clarifications in Update 2.1, early combat habits, a route through Night City, and the choice between the base game and Ultimate Edition. Mechanics can change with future patches, so check the in-game descriptions and current patch notes when a perk or implant behaves differently from the examples here.

What changed in Update 2.0 and 2.1

Update 2.0 rebuilt the perk and skill trees, reworked cyberware, and added vehicle combat, car chases and a new police system on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That makes many pre-2.0 build lists unreliable: they may name perks, armor behavior or cyberware interactions that no longer exist. Update 2.1 subsequently changed and clarified some systems, so treat any volatile mechanic as patch-specific rather than universal.

The redesign is meant to give you flexibility rather than force a single class. You can reset and rework choices as you learn, while the official Build Planner shows the current base-game trees and, for expansion owners, the Phantom Liberty Relic tree. Use the planner to inspect requirements before committing, but make decisions from the way you actually fight. A spreadsheet build that looks powerful is not useful if its timing, range or aiming demands frustrate you.

Choose a beginner build by combat loop

There is no authoritative statistic proving one universal “best” build, and no reliable published beginner success rate or DPS comparison establishes one. The strongest beginner choice is a coherent loop: an attribute and perk branch improves your main weapons or hacks, your operating system enables that behavior, and cyberware covers its weaknesses. Try the opening missions, then adjust instead of following a level-by-level prescription.

Direct-combat gunfighter

Choose a weapon family you enjoy and invest in the attribute and perk branch that improves it. Keep a second weapon for a different distance or for enemies that resist your preferred approach. A gunfighter benefits from learning recoil control, stamina management, reload timing and the use of cover before adding complicated tricks. Your operating system and implants should improve the damage, handling, survivability or resource economy of that weapon loop rather than provide unrelated bonuses.

  • Open by scanning, identifying high-threat targets and locating cover.
  • Use short, controlled bursts or deliberate shots instead of standing in the open.
  • Carry a close-range option for rushers and a longer-range option for exposed targets.
  • Spend cyberware capacity on effects that keep you firing or alive during your chosen engagement distance.

Blade and mobility

A blade-focused character pairs Reflexes-oriented movement and blade perks with cyberware that supports speed and survivability. The loop is about closing distance safely, attacking while moving, and leaving danger before being surrounded. Practice dashes, slides, jumps and cover transitions in low-risk encounters before raising the difficulty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Scan for turrets, cameras and elevated shooters before charging.
  • Use movement to isolate one target rather than sprinting into an entire group.
  • Keep a firearm or other ranged tool for flying, distant or heavily protected enemies.
  • Choose implants that reinforce mobility, mitigation or recovery; do not fill every slot with unrelated damage bonuses.

Stealth infiltrator

Stealth works best when you control information. Invest in hacking and detection control while maintaining a reliable close-range fallback for alarms or isolated takedowns. Cameras, patrol routes and access points are part of the encounter; disabling or bypassing them can be more valuable than a small damage increase.

  1. Scan the area from concealment and mark cameras, guards, turrets and networked devices.
  2. Disable or bypass the defenses that would expose your route.
  3. Move between cover and use takedowns or quiet weapons where the layout allows.
  4. If detection starts, switch deliberately to your backup weapon or quickhack sequence instead of improvising in the open.

Netrunner with a close-range fallback

Netrunning rewards preparation and sequencing. Invest in hacking, queue management and detection control, but keep a weapon you can use when a target resists a quickhack, closes the distance or survives your first sequence. Your operating system, perks and cyberware should support the same resource loop; buying isolated bonuses produces a character that is technically broad but difficult to operate.

  • Scan first and identify cameras, access points and priority targets.
  • Use the available quickhack queue in a deliberate order rather than spending every resource immediately.
  • Watch for enemies who resist or counter your preferred hack and finish them with your fallback weapon.
  • Improve survivability and escape options so a failed stealth attempt does not end the encounter.

How to use the official Build Planner

The official planner reflects the redesigned base-game trees and the Phantom Liberty Relic tree. Map your intended attribute and perk direction, check prerequisites, and note which operating system and weapon family make the loop possible. Treat the result as a hypothesis. After several missions, remove choices you never use and move toward the timing and range that feel natural. The game supports experimentation, so comfort and consistency matter more than copying an online sequence.

Attributes, perks and cyberware: a practical progression order

Spend points around one primary behavior

Early points have the greatest effect when they improve one repeatable action. If you use blades, movement and blade perks should receive priority; if you shoot, your chosen weapon branch should make attacks easier to control; if you hack, perks that improve your queue and information advantage should come first. A secondary branch can cover a weakness, but buying small bonuses in every tree delays the point at which your character feels capable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a safety branch

A safety branch is not a second full build. It is one dependable answer to a common failure: a ranged weapon for a melee character, a close weapon for a netrunner, or a stealth escape option when an alarm triggers. This prevents a single resistant enemy or bad room layout from invalidating your entire plan.

Cyberware is a build layer

CD PROJEKT RED describes cyberware as “part of your build” and as gear that supports and enhances your playstyle. Your character has a limit on how much cyberware can be equipped, so capacity is a strategic resource rather than a checklist. Buy implants that make the primary loop safer, faster or more reliable before filling every available slot with unrelated effects.

  • Match the implant to the loop: mobility and survivability for blades, weapon handling and mitigation for direct combat, or hacking and detection control for stealth and netrunning.
  • Leave capacity for upgrades: a modest implant that solves a current problem is better than spending everything before you understand your needs.
  • Review at ripperdocs: as your level and equipment change, replace effects that no longer contribute to the way you fight.
  • Read the current description: post-2.0 behavior can differ from older guides, especially where armor, operating systems or resource interactions are concerned.

When to respec your plan

Revisit your attributes, perks and implants after you have tried several mission types. If you repeatedly ignore a perk, cannot sustain its resource cost, or find yourself using the backup weapon more than the advertised main weapon, that is useful evidence. Shift gradually instead of rebuilding after every encounter; a coherent core is easier to evaluate than constant changes.

Combat fundamentals that keep new characters alive

Use a repeatable opening sequence

  1. Scan the area. Mark threats, cameras, turrets, explosive objects, access points and possible cover.
  2. Choose the engagement distance. Decide whether this room favors your main weapon, a hack sequence, a stealth route or a mobility approach.
  3. Disable or bypass defenses. Removing a camera or isolating a guard can prevent an avoidable alarm.
  4. Commit to the loop. Start the chosen weapon or quickhack sequence and use movement, cover and healing rather than trading damage in the open.
  5. Switch when the situation changes. Use the backup weapon for resistant targets, distant enemies or a failed stealth attempt.

Movement and cover

Standing still turns ordinary encounters into damage races. Move between cover, break lines of sight and use vertical routes when the environment offers them. A blade character should close distance with a plan; a gunfighter should expose only enough of the body to make a controlled attack; a netrunner should keep an escape route while managing the queue. Vehicle combat and chases introduced in Update 2.0 add situations where positioning and movement matter outside a normal room, so do not build habits around stationary shooting alone.

Healing, grenades and resources

Use healing before you are at the edge of defeat, and keep an eye on the timing of your recovery tools. Grenades can create space, interrupt a rush or force enemies out of cover; they are not merely extra damage. Quickhacks, stamina and cyberware effects likewise have costs and cooldowns. Learn one reliable sequence, repeat it until its resource demands are familiar, then add complexity.

Difficulty as a learning control

Lower difficulty is a reasonable starting point while you learn recoil, stamina, healing timing, quickhack queues and cyberware effects. Raise it once your build feels coherent and you can execute the opening sequence without panic. Difficulty is a learning setting, not a measure of whether the build is valid; changing it lets you practice the same character instead of abandoning a playstyle you enjoy.

What to do first in Night City

Alternate main jobs with side jobs, gigs, NCPD activities, cyberpsychos and other map markers. This mix supplies money, gear, practice and upgrade opportunities while preventing the early story from becoming your only source of experience. The official complete guide’s coverage includes main jobs, side jobs, gigs, cyberpsychos, hustles, annotated maps and screenshots, which reflects how much useful content sits outside the critical path.

A sustainable early-game rhythm

  1. Advance the main job until a new district or activity type opens. This gives you context and unlocks systems without rushing the entire story.
  2. Clear nearby gigs and NCPD activities. Choose encounters that let you practice your intended range or hacking route.
  3. Take a side job when one appears. Side jobs often provide unusual spaces, characters and combat conditions that expose weaknesses in your build.
  4. Investigate cyberpsychos and other marked targets when prepared. Use scanning and cover; these encounters are good tests of whether your loop works against a durable threat.
  5. Return to vendors and ripperdocs as you level. Compare new equipment and implants with your plan rather than buying every item.

Read, loot and travel deliberately

Read shards when their information helps you understand a location, objective or faction. Loot supports your money and gear economy, but inventory management should serve the build: keep weapons that cover a real range or resistance problem and sell or dismantle distractions. Use fast travel selectively. Walking or driving between objectives reveals vertical routes, environmental encounters and map activities that a sequence of instant jumps can hide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the map as a decision tool

Instead of clearing every icon immediately, group activities by distance and difficulty. A cluster of gigs near a vendor lets you test equipment, sell excess loot and return to the story with a clear upgrade. Mark activities you postponed because your current cyberware capacity, weapon range or survivability was insufficient, then revisit them after a meaningful improvement.

Phantom Liberty, Dogtown and the Relic tree

Phantom Liberty adds Dogtown and the Relic progression tree. Owners should account for this additional layer when using the Build Planner; it can complement a base-game direction but does not remove the need for a coherent weapon, hacking or stealth loop. Players without the expansion can still plan effectively with the base-game trees.

Approach Dogtown as another environment to learn rather than as a reason to discard your character. Its missions and encounters can test movement, detection control and resource management in new combinations. Recheck your perk and cyberware choices when the Relic tree introduces options that solve a problem your original plan had identified.

Base game or Ultimate Edition?

Choice What it includes Who should choose it Important qualification
Base game Cyberpunk 2077 and its current free updates for the supported platform Players who want to learn Night City first or may decide on the expansion later It does not include Phantom Liberty or the Relic tree.
Ultimate Edition The base game plus Phantom Liberty, with the major free updates New players who want the complete current package in one purchase CD PROJEKT RED announced its release for December 5, 2023; digital and physical availability depends on platform and market.

For a new player who already expects to play the expansion, the Ultimate package avoids a later separate purchase and gives immediate access to Dogtown and the Relic tree. If you are uncertain about the expansion or want to spread spending, the base game is sufficient for the beginner build and exploration plan in this guide. Check the exact platform, region and edition contents before buying because physical availability is market-dependent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the physical Ultimate package may contain

The official physical-edition listing describes contents such as game media or a code, a world compendium, a Night City map, postcards and stickers. The exact disc, code and packaging arrangement varies by platform and market, so verify the retailer listing rather than assuming every box has the same contents.

A printed reference for exploration

The Cyberpunk 2077 Complete Official Guide is useful if you want annotated maps, quest routes and a paper systems reference. Simon & Schuster lists a standard edition at a US$24.99 list price and a Collector’s Edition at US$39.99; retailer prices can differ. Its coverage includes character development, gameplay, quests and an updated interactive map.

The guide is a reference for routes and systems context, not a guarantee that every mechanic still matches the game. It predates later patches, so confirm perk, cyberware, police and vehicle behavior against the current in-game descriptions and patch notes. Use it beside the exploration section of this guide when you want a physical map, not as a replacement for current mechanics information.

Common beginner mistakes and fixes

Copying a pre-2.0 build list

Symptom: a named perk, armor interaction or implant is missing or behaves differently. Fix: identify the patch the advice was written for, then rebuild around the current in-game tree and the official planner. Update 2.0’s redesign is the dividing line for many older recommendations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying every cyberware slot immediately

Symptom: you have many implants but none clearly improves your combat loop, and capacity blocks a later upgrade. Fix: reserve capacity for effects that solve your primary weakness and revisit ripperdocs after testing several missions.

Using one weapon for every problem

Symptom: distant, flying or resistant enemies stall the encounter. Fix: carry a backup weapon or hacking option that covers a different range or defense, and practice switching before the primary tool fails.

Ignoring cameras and room layout

Symptom: a supposedly easy fight becomes a multi-directional alarm. Fix: scan first, disable or bypass defenses, choose cover and identify an exit before committing.

Rushing only the main story

Symptom: you lack money, gear, practice and upgrade opportunities. Fix: alternate main jobs with nearby gigs, side jobs, NCPD activities, cyberpsychos and other map markers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Raising difficulty before the build is readable

Symptom: you cannot tell whether a death came from poor positioning, an unspent upgrade or an unsuitable loop. Fix: lower difficulty while learning the fundamentals, then raise it after you can repeat your opening sequence and manage resources reliably.

A concise first-session checklist

  • Choose one primary loop: guns, blades and mobility, stealth, or netrunning.
  • Use the current Build Planner to inspect prerequisites and, if applicable, the Phantom Liberty Relic tree.
  • Spend early attribute and perk points on the branch that improves your most-used action.
  • Keep one backup weapon or hack for a different distance or enemy resistance.
  • Scan rooms, mark cameras and threats, and choose cover before attacking.
  • Buy cyberware that reinforces the loop; remember that capacity is limited.
  • Alternate story missions with gigs, side jobs, NCPD activities and other map encounters.
  • Read current in-game descriptions when an older guide conflicts with what you see.
  • Use lower difficulty as practice, then raise it when recoil, movement, healing and hacking feel controlled.
  • Choose the base game or Ultimate Edition based on whether you want Phantom Liberty now, and verify platform and region details.

Bottom line

Build around the way you want to fight, make cyberware support that loop, and use Night City’s side content as structured practice. Update 2.0 makes old progression advice risky, while Update 2.1 and later patches make current descriptions important. A coherent, adaptable character will carry a beginner farther than a rigid “best build,” and the Ultimate Edition is the straightforward choice when you want the base game and Phantom Liberty together.
