Cyberpunk 2077 Beginner’s Guide: Lifepaths, Builds, and Essential Early Choices

Choose the lifepath whose voice and opening appeal to you, then build V around one primary attribute and the weapons or abilities you actually enjoy. Nomad, Streetkid, and Corpo mainly change the prologue framing and occasional dialogue; none locks you into a combat class. After Update 2.0, the safest beginner approach is to experiment briefly, commit early perk points to a clear direction, treat cyberware as part of that direction, and respec perks when your play style changes.

This guide explains the three lifepaths, the five attributes, practical starter archetypes, early decisions, respec rules, Phantom Liberty timing, returning-save considerations, and what to check before buying or tuning the PC version.

What changed with Update 2.0

Update 2.0 is the correct systems baseline for a new playthrough. CD PROJEKT RED overhauled perks, skill trees, cyberware, police behavior, and vehicle combat. The redesign replaced the older, denser perk structure with fewer perks that have more noticeable effects, while attribute trees gained new abilities. Advice written for the pre-2.0 game can therefore point you toward systems that no longer work the same way.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The overhaul was extensive enough that CD PROJEKT RED strongly recommended starting a new playthrough rather than treating an old character as a perfect representation of the new rules. Existing saves received refunded perk points and a one-time opportunity to redistribute attributes, so a returning player can rebuild instead of abandoning a character immediately.

Why a fresh character is useful

  • You see the redesigned perk trees from the beginning instead of inheriting choices made for the old system.
  • You can test weapons, quickhacks, movement and stealth before investing heavily in one path.
  • Your cyberware capacity and upgrades develop alongside your new attribute plan.
  • The opening teaches the current police, vehicle and combat behavior rather than mixing old expectations with new mechanics.

Which lifepath should you choose?

Pick the lifepath whose role-play premise you will enjoy for the opening hours. Lifepaths alter V’s background, opening sequence and some situational dialogue, but they do not determine whether you become a netrunner, blade fighter, shotgun bruiser, stealth specialist or precision shooter. Your attributes and perks make that decision later.

Lifepath Best fit if you want… What it changes What it does not change
Nomad An outsider arriving in Night City, with a road-focused opening flavor. The background framing, prologue tone and occasional Nomad-related dialogue. Your eventual weapons, attributes, perks, cyberware or combat role.
Streetkid V to begin with familiarity with Night City’s local culture and streets. The background framing, prologue tone and situational Streetkid dialogue. Your eventual weapons, attributes, perks, cyberware or combat role.
Corpo A corporate background and dialogue shaped by that experience. The background framing, prologue tone and situational Corpo dialogue. Your eventual weapons, attributes, perks, cyberware or combat role.

A quick decision rule

  1. Choose Nomad if the idea of entering Night City from outside and beginning on the road is the most appealing.
  2. Choose Streetkid if you want V to feel locally informed from the start.
  3. Choose Corpo if corporate language, power structures and that social perspective interest you.

Do not select a lifepath because a guide labels it the “best” class. There is no mandatory lifepath-to-build pairing, and changing your mind about combat later does not require restarting solely because of this choice.

Build foundations: the five attributes

After Update 2.0, the five main attributes are Body, Intelligence, Reflexes, Technical Ability and Cool. Their perk trees provide the structure for a build. The pairings below are starting directions, not restrictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Attribute Natural beginner direction Questions to ask yourself
Body Durability and close-range or shotgun-oriented play. Do I want to stay in the fight, absorb pressure and solve encounters at close range?
Reflexes Fast movement, blades and agile gunplay. Do I want mobility and an active, movement-heavy approach?
Intelligence Netrunning and quickhack-centered play. Do I prefer planning through the scanner, managing RAM and disabling enemies through systems?
Technical Ability Cyberware investment and tech-weapon experimentation. Do I want the build itself and its installed cyberware to be central to how V fights?
Cool Precision, stealth and headshot-oriented approaches. Do I prefer controlled engagements, concealment and accurate shots?

How to spend the first points

  1. Choose one primary attribute. Put early points toward the tree that matches the activity you keep returning to. A focused investment reaches meaningful perk tiers sooner than scattering points across every tree.
  2. Keep one secondary attribute flexible. A secondary direction lets you borrow mobility, defense, hacking or weapon options without abandoning the main concept.
  3. Buy perks that support the weapons you actually use. If testing shows that you prefer direct gunfire over hacking, redirect future points instead of preserving a plan you no longer enjoy.
  4. Revisit the plan outside combat. Perks can be redistributed outside combat, so experimentation is part of the intended system rather than a mistake you must live with.

The official Build Planner includes the base-game attribute trees and, when available, Phantom Liberty’s Relic tree. It is useful before spending points, but do not let a finished-looking diagram stop you from changing direction after playing.

Three beginner build directions

These are readable starting archetypes, not fixed classes. Compare them by distance, visibility, system dependence, resource feel and flexibility.

BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Cyberpunk 2077 (Ultimate Edition)
  • THE ULTIMATE CYBERPUNK 2077 EXPERIENCE - Includes the critically acclaimed spy thriller expansion Phantom Liberty
  • CREATE YOUR OWN CYBERPUNK
  • Explore the city of the future – you decide when you want to go where and how to get there
  • Decide how the story ends – your choices in the main game as well as in the spy thriller adventure Phantom Liberty lead to a complex web of consequences
Archetype Primary direction Combat distance Visibility Main resources to learn Easy secondary options
Close-range bruiser Body Close range, especially durable direct engagements and shotguns. Loud combat. Stamina, positioning and ammunition. Reflexes for movement or Technical Ability for cyberware investment.
Agile blade or gun fighter Reflexes Close to mid range, using movement to control space. Loud or mixed. Stamina, timing and weapon handling. Cool for precision or Body for toughness.
Quickhack operator Intelligence Variable; the scanner and quickhacks can shape the encounter before direct fire. Often lower visibility, but not restricted to stealth. RAM and cooldown management. Technical Ability for cyberware or Cool for stealth and precision.
Cyberware-focused experimenter Technical Ability Depends on the installed system and weapon combination. Loud, stealth or mixed. Cyberware capacity and the resources attached to chosen equipment. Body for durability or Reflexes for mobility.
Stealth marksman Cool Mid to long range, emphasizing precision. Stealth-first. Positioning, concealment and accurate shots. Intelligence for system-based control or Reflexes for escape and movement.

How to choose among them

  • If you repeatedly close distance and prefer resilience, start with Body.
  • If movement itself feels like the fun part, start with Reflexes.
  • If you enjoy reading an encounter through the scanner and controlling it digitally, start with Intelligence.
  • If you want cyberware choices to define your capabilities, start with Technical Ability.
  • If you prefer patience, stealth and deliberate headshots, start with Cool.

These directions can borrow from one another. A Body character can learn mobility; a Cool character can use direct weapons; and an Intelligence character can still fight openly. The primary attribute is a prioritization tool, not a permanent label.

Essential choices in your opening hours

Learn the scanner before specializing

Use the scanner regularly during early encounters and pay attention to how information changes your options. Test several weapons and approaches before committing deeply. Try direct fire, movement, stealth and quickhacks when the situation allows. The goal is not to master every system immediately; it is to identify which loop you voluntarily use when more than one solution is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Concentrate early perks

A beginner loses more momentum by spreading points thinly than by choosing the “wrong” primary attribute. Concentration does not mean refusing every side option. It means reaching the next useful tier in one tree before investing widely, then adding a secondary tree once the main direction feels reliable.

Make cyberware part of the plan

Update 2.0 ties cyberware strength and capacity to the redesigned progression. Treat a ripperdoc visit as part of character development, not a separate shopping task. As your level and attribute plan develop, review installed cyberware and ask whether it supports the way you now fight. A system chosen for a test build does not have to remain the center of your final build.

Do not copy pre-2.0 advice without checking the version

Older guides may describe perk layouts, skill interactions, police behavior, cyberware rules or vehicle systems that were changed by Update 2.0. If a recommendation depends on an old tree or an old police response, treat it as historical context rather than an instruction for the current game.

Respec rules: can you change your character?

Yes, you can redistribute perk points outside combat. This is the practical safety valve for beginners: test a tree, notice what you enjoy, and refund perks when you are not actively fighting. You do not need to restart merely because your first perk choices were experimental.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to use respec without losing direction

  1. Leave combat and open the character progression interface.
  2. Review the perks that directly support your current weapons or approach.
  3. Redistribute points from perks you no longer use into the next meaningful tier of your primary attribute.
  4. Keep a small secondary direction only when it solves a problem your main tree does not, such as mobility, stealth or system control.
  5. Test the revised setup in a few encounters before making another large change.

Perk redistribution and attribute redistribution are not the same thing. Existing saves received a documented one-time attribute redistribution after Update 2.0; do not assume that this legacy option works like repeatedly refunding ordinary perks during a new playthrough.

Returning to an old save after Update 2.0

If you already played before the overhaul, first inspect the reset options on that save. Refunded perk points let you rebuild around the new trees, and the one-time attribute redistribution can correct a broader mismatch. Because the changes affect crucial systems, starting a new playthrough remains the cleanest way to learn the current design, but a returning save is not automatically unusable.

  • Write down the weapons and abilities you actually want to keep using before reallocating points.
  • Do not evaluate the old build by pre-2.0 expectations; read the current perk descriptions.
  • Recheck cyberware after the reset because capacity and progression now participate in the build more directly.
  • Expect your assumptions about police encounters and vehicles to differ from what you remember.

When should you start Phantom Liberty?

Phantom Liberty is optional and separate from the base game. It adds its own campaign and the Relic skill tree. It is available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and owners have an official option to begin with an adequately leveled character rather than building from the opening.

A practical beginner sequence

  1. Play through the opening hours of the base game.
  2. Learn scanning, ordinary combat, perks and cyberware well enough to recognize what your character needs.
  3. Enter Phantom Liberty once those systems feel readable, unless you specifically want to use the adequately leveled start.

This is pacing advice, not a hard lock or a spoiler-free rule established by the game’s official material. Starting earlier can be valid if you want the expansion’s campaign and Relic progression to influence your build; waiting lets a first-time player learn the foundations with less simultaneous information.

  • Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the international version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.

Who should consider buying it immediately?

  • A new player who wants the complete current experience and is comfortable learning the Relic tree alongside the base systems.
  • A returning player who has already finished or substantially learned the base game.
  • Someone who specifically wants the expansion’s campaign rather than only the original storyline.

If you are still learning the scanner, perks and cyberware, there is no need to rush into the expansion simply because it is available. The adequately leveled start exists for owners who prefer to begin there, while a normal opening provides a gentler systems introduction.

Is Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition worth buying?

The answer depends on whether you want only the base game or the base game plus Phantom Liberty, and on the platform and region shown by your store. Ultimate Edition is most relevant to a buyer who wants the complete package rather than planning to add the expansion separately. Check the live listing for your exact platform, included content, edition name and regional price before purchasing; storefront inventory and terms can change.

Your situation Most sensible purchase logic
You want the original campaign only and are unsure about the expansion. Compare the base-game listing with the Ultimate Edition price and included content in your region. Buy the less expensive route if you do not need Phantom Liberty now.
You already know you want Phantom Liberty. Compare the combined cost of the base game and expansion with the current Ultimate Edition listing on your platform.
You own the base game already. Check the price of Phantom Liberty alone before paying for a bundle that duplicates content you already own.
You are buying on PC. Check the official requirements table for your chosen graphics mode before deciding whether your hardware is suitable.

Do not judge the edition by a different platform’s listing or an old sale price. Edition names, storefront contents and promotions are volatile; verify the current page at checkout.

PC requirements and setup checks

Before buying or tuning the PC version, use CD PROJEKT RED’s current requirements table for the exact platform configuration and graphics mode you intend to run. The table covers Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty PC configurations. Avoid treating a single “recommended” label as universal: the relevant requirement depends on the selected mode and the expansion content you plan to play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to verify

  • Your operating system and hardware match the listed configuration for the graphics mode you want.
  • You have enough storage for the edition and installed expansion you plan to use.
  • You are checking the current table, not a pre-2.0 specification copied into an older guide.
  • If you add Phantom Liberty later, you recheck the requirements for that configuration rather than assuming the base-game listing covers every mode.

A first-session checklist

  1. Choose Nomad, Streetkid or Corpo for the role-play premise, not for a supposed class advantage.
  2. Open the scanner and deliberately test more than one weapon and approach.
  3. Select one primary attribute from Body, Intelligence, Reflexes, Technical Ability or Cool.
  4. Spend early perk points toward the next useful tier in that tree.
  5. Keep one secondary attribute available for mobility, stealth, hacking, durability or another gap.
  6. Visit a ripperdoc as your level and attribute plan develop, and review cyberware as part of the build.
  7. Redistribute perks outside combat when testing shows that your first plan is not enjoyable.
  8. Ignore pre-2.0 recommendations until you confirm that the referenced systems still exist in the current overhaul.
  9. If you are returning to an old save, inspect refunded perks and the one-time attribute redistribution before continuing.
  10. Check the official PC requirements table before buying or choosing a graphics mode.
  11. Learn the base systems before Phantom Liberty unless you deliberately want to use its adequately leveled start.

Troubleshooting common beginner mistakes

“I chose the wrong lifepath.”

You probably did not. Lifepaths frame the story and dialogue; they do not lock your combat class. Continue unless you dislike the character background enough to want a different role-play opening.

“My build feels weak because I spent points everywhere.”

Use perk redistribution outside combat, then concentrate future points on one primary attribute until its next meaningful tier. Keep only the secondary perks that solve a clear problem.

“The build guide I found describes different perks.”

Check whether it predates Update 2.0. The overhaul changed perks, skills, cyberware, police behavior and vehicle combat, so an old recommendation may be describing a different game system.

“I do not know whether to enter Phantom Liberty.”

Use the base opening to learn scanning, combat, perks and cyberware first. If you want to start the expansion immediately, owners have an official adequately leveled-start option; the choice is about pacing, not a mandatory gate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“My old character no longer makes sense.”

Inspect the refunded perk points and the one-time attribute redistribution documented for existing saves. If the new systems still feel confusing, a fresh playthrough follows the overhaul’s intended progression more cleanly.

The simplest answer for a new player

Choose the lifepath that gives you the role-play opening you want. Start with one attribute that matches the way you naturally fight, test several tools before committing, and treat perks and cyberware as adjustable parts of the same plan. Update 2.0 makes experimentation practical, while Phantom Liberty can wait until the base systems feel familiar or begin through its leveled-start option when you deliberately want that route.
