The released version does not include an official co-op campaign, multiplayer mission mode, shared progression, shared inventory, or shared-loot rules. Every quest, decision, character build, item and ending is managed in an individual save. You can play the campaign and Phantom Liberty on supported platforms, but you cannot bring a friend into your story or complete the main missions together through an officially supported mode.
Does Cyberpunk 2077 have co-op?
No. Cyberpunk 2077’s released game is an individual single-player campaign. CD PROJEKT RED’s official quest-support and launch materials explain how quests, saves, Phantom Liberty content and platform updates work, but they do not document an official co-op campaign or multiplayer feature.

That distinction matters because a game can contain a large open world, companion characters and repeatable activities without being designed for two human players. In Cyberpunk 2077, the other people you meet in Night City and Dogtown are non-player characters controlled by the game. They can accompany V during particular missions or appear in scripted encounters, but they are not another player’s avatar.

There is therefore no supported way to invite a friend into your save, assign them a role in a mission, synchronize two campaigns, or finish the main story as a party. A claim that the released game has a co-op story, shared campaign save or multiplayer loot system is not supported by the official materials described above.

What single-player ownership means for your campaign
Your save owns the story state
Quest completion, dialogue choices, relationships, gear, abilities, money and endings belong to the save file of one player. The game does not maintain a separate host campaign and guest campaign because it has no official co-op session structure. If two people play on the same platform, each person needs to use their own profile or save-management approach; one player’s decisions do not become a second player’s synchronized progress.
This is also why a friend cannot join halfway through a quest to receive the same completion credit. A mission is evaluated against the state of the save that started and completed it. If you want to experience a different branch, you create or load another save and make that run’s decisions yourself.
Companions are not co-op partners
Several missions put V alongside important characters, and Phantom Liberty adds new characters in Dogtown. Those characters may fight, travel or talk with V during a mission, but their presence is authored story content, not a player-controlled multiplayer slot. Their dialogue and actions do not establish a shared progression system.
Open-world freedom does not imply multiplayer
You can explore, fight, drive, take gigs and pursue activities in a flexible order. That freedom is about how one player approaches the campaign. It does not mean another player can enter the same world, alter the same quest state or collect rewards in parallel.
How progression and saves work
Save often, especially around major decisions
CD PROJEKT RED’s quest-support guidance tells players to save often. Frequent manual saves are useful because missions can branch, choices can close off options and combat or exploration can leave you far from an earlier checkpoint. In a single-player game, the save is the authoritative record of your progress; there is no host backup or shared checkpoint to restore after a co-op partner disconnects.
- Use a recent manual save before a major conversation or mission decision.
- Keep more than one rotating save rather than overwriting the only copy of a run.
- Create a separate save before an ending sequence if you want to explore other outcomes later.
- Do not expect another player’s save, inventory or quest state to merge with yours.
The Point of No Return is personal to the save
The quest-support material also documents a Point of No Return issue after completing “Things Done Changed,” the Phantom Liberty/The Tower ending. The practical implication is that the warning and resulting progression behavior are handled inside the individual campaign save. They are not a lobby rule shared by a group of players.
If you reach that point, treat the save as your own campaign state: make the backup you need before committing to the sequence, and use an earlier save if you want to continue exploring content that the ending sequence changes or closes. A second player cannot keep a joint campaign moving while your save is at that point, because no official shared campaign exists.

What is not synchronized
There is no official documentation for synchronizing any of the following between players:
- Quest flags or mission completion
- Dialogue choices and relationship state
- Character levels, perks or cyberware configuration
- Money, crafting materials or equipment
- Map discoveries, gigs or fast-travel progress
- Endings and post-ending access
These are all elements of an individual campaign save. If you want to compare outcomes with a friend, each of you must make the choices and complete the relevant missions in your own run.
Can co-op players do the main story together?
No. The main story is not presented as a co-op mission playlist, and there is no official method for two players to share V’s campaign. You cannot designate one person as host and another as a guest, split control of combat and dialogue, or transfer a completed objective to a friend’s save.
You can still experience the story socially by playing alongside someone in the same room, streaming your screen, discussing choices or comparing two separate saves. Those are viewing and coordination arrangements, not multiplayer features. Each player remains responsible for their own decisions, mission results and ending.

What happens when two people want different builds?
That is a strength of separate single-player runs rather than a co-op system. One player can build V around a particular combat approach while another uses a different allocation of attributes, perks, cyberware and weapons. Neither build is imported into the other’s campaign, and there is no party composition to balance.
Can a friend help with a difficult boss?
Not through an official online assist option. Boss fights are designed around the abilities and equipment in the current save. A friend can offer advice or watch your run, but cannot join the encounter as a second combatant in the released game.
What missions and activities does Phantom Liberty add?
Phantom Liberty expands the single-player campaign with Dogtown, new gigs and characters, new boss fights, and additional open-world activities. In its September 25, 2023 launch announcement, CD PROJEKT RED described “infinitely replayable open world activities in the forms of airdrops and courier missions.” These are official campaign activities for one player; the announcement does not describe a co-op mission queue, group matchmaking or shared objective tracking.

Dogtown and new characters
Dogtown is the expansion’s new setting. Its missions and characters add another layer of story content to V’s individual campaign. Meeting a new character does not create a second player slot, and completing an expansion objective does not write progress to anyone else’s account.
Boss fights
Phantom Liberty adds boss encounters that are played within the same single-player framework as the base game. Difficulty, equipment and encounter outcomes are evaluated for V’s save. There is no official second-player revive, damage role or group reward attached to these fights.
Airdrops and courier missions
The airdrop and courier activities are described as repeatable open-world content. “Infinitely replayable” refers to the ability to undertake the activities repeatedly in the expansion’s world; it does not mean that an online party can repeat them together or that rewards are distributed to a group inventory. A player can return to these activities in their own campaign and manage the resulting rewards in that save.
What the announcement does not say
The Phantom Liberty launch material does not announce any of the following:
- A co-op version of the main story
- A separate multiplayer mission playlist
- Two-player or four-player boss encounters
- Shared airdrop or courier-mission rewards
- Cross-save progression between different players
That omission is important when interpreting descriptions of new activities. New content and replayability do not change the released game’s single-player structure.

No official shared-loot, trading or synchronized multiplayer-inventory rules are documented for the released game. The reviewed CD PROJEKT RED materials cover quest progression, the Phantom Liberty activities and supported platforms, but do not publish a system in which players exchange weapons, split drops or deposit items into a common stash.
Loot belongs to the campaign save
Weapons, clothing, cyberware, crafting components, money and other rewards you obtain are managed by your individual campaign. There is no second player’s inventory to receive a duplicate drop and no group-reward screen that assigns an item after a joint mission.

If you find a powerful item, its availability is limited to the character and save in which you obtained it. To use a similar item in another player’s run, that player must acquire it through their own campaign activities or progression.
Trading is not an official workaround
Without a documented multiplayer inventory or item-transfer interface, there is no official trade window, player marketplace or drop-for-a-friend system to rely on. Do not assume that placing an item in a container, changing characters or using a different save will transfer ownership between players. Those actions do not create a supported cross-player inventory.
How to handle rewards in a solo run
- Check the reward on the character who completed the mission.
- Keep valuable gear in that campaign’s inventory or storage.
- Use manual saves before selling or dismantling an item when you are uncertain about its value.
- Remember that a reward’s availability can differ between separate playthroughs because mission choices and progression differ.
Any claim that a mod, exploit or unofficial tool provides shared loot should be treated separately from the shipped game’s rules. It is not evidence that CD PROJEKT RED supports multiplayer trading or shared drops.
Supported platforms and what “current” support means
CD PROJEKT RED states that after Patch 1.6, further content updates and improvements are made exclusively for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Phantom Liberty is listed for those platforms as well. This is a platform and update-policy statement, not an announcement of co-op.

Because platform policies and available editions can change, check the current official platform listing before buying an expansion or planning a new installation. The support statement above does not establish support for a co-op mode on any platform.

Search results and videos may use “multiplayer,” “co-op” or “shared world” loosely. Some may discuss prototypes, canceled plans, community modifications or future projects rather than the released Cyberpunk 2077 campaign. None of those categories should be presented as a shipped feature.

Signs that a claim is not describing the released game
- It refers to a planned or rumored feature without an official release note.
- It shows a modded client, altered interface or private test environment.
- It promises shared saves, synchronized inventories or campaign matchmaking without naming a CD PROJEKT RED support document.
- It uses footage from another game, a trailer concept or an unrelated online title.
What an official announcement would need to establish
A genuine co-op feature would need clear documentation of session creation, supported players, save ownership, mission synchronization, disconnection behavior, inventory rules and platform availability. The official materials covered for Cyberpunk 2077 do not provide those rules. Until an official source does, the safe answer remains that the released game is single-player.

How to choose the right way to play
Choose Cyberpunk 2077 if you want a solo story RPG
The game fits players who want to make their own decisions, experiment with a build, explore Night City and Dogtown at their own pace, and see how one save develops. The absence of co-op means the narrative is not interrupted by another player’s schedule, connection or conflicting choice.
Choose a separate run when comparing outcomes
If you and a friend want to compare endings, romances, mission branches or builds, start separate campaigns and agree on a few questions to investigate. One person can pursue a different dialogue choice or combat approach while the other keeps a first run intact. This produces genuinely different save states without pretending that the game synchronizes them.
Use social play outside the save system
Watching a friend stream a mission, discussing a build, sharing route advice or comparing screenshots can make a solo game a social experience. Those activities are external to the game’s progression and do not grant either player the other’s rewards.
Using an official guide for missions, builds and rewards
For players who want structured help rather than multiplayer features, Cyberpunk 2077 The Complete Official Guide Collection is the clearest relevant physical product identified for this game. Its listing describes walkthroughs, full-color maps, character builds, quests, optional objectives and reward strategies. The guide is useful precisely because the campaign is individual: it helps one player plan a route, understand a mission and make informed build decisions in their own save.
When shopping, verify the exact edition, platform coverage, stock and price with the retailer. A listing may describe the collection as available from Amazon and other retailers, but availability and commercial terms can change. A guide does not add co-op, unlock shared loot or synchronize saves; it is a reference for the single-player campaign.
What to look for in a guide
- Mission walkthroughs that identify optional objectives and branching decisions
- Maps that distinguish the base game from Dogtown content
- Build explanations for attributes, perks, cyberware and equipment
- Reward details that help you decide whether to keep, sell or dismantle items
- Coverage of Phantom Liberty missions and activities if you own the expansion
A practical checklist before starting a new run
- Confirm your platform. For ongoing content updates, the stated support platforms are PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- Decide whether you are playing the base campaign, Phantom Liberty, or both. The expansion adds Dogtown and its own missions and activities to the solo campaign.
- Set up manual-save habits. Save before major choices, difficult encounters and the Point of No Return sequence.
- Plan your build independently. There is no party role or second character whose abilities need to complement yours.
- Track valuable rewards in your own inventory. No official trade or shared-stash system transfers them to another player.
- Treat multiplayer claims cautiously. Separate official features from mods, rumors and future-project speculation.
The short answer for common questions
Cyberpunk 2077 is not multiplayer in its released form. It has no official co-op campaign, no shared main-story completion, no documented shared progression and no documented shared loot or trading system. Phantom Liberty expands the solo campaign with Dogtown, new gigs and characters, boss fights, airdrops and courier missions. Your quests, choices and rewards remain tied to your individual save.
