Quality mode is specified at 30 frames per second and 1080p in both TV and handheld play. Performance mode targets up to 40 frames per second, at 1080p on a television and 720p in handheld mode; handheld play also uses variable refresh rate (VRR). Nintendo lists 60.5 GB of required space for the digital version, while the physical edition uses a 64 GB game card. The card runs the game directly, but updates and optional language packs still need internal storage or a microSD Express card.
How well does Cyberpunk 2077 run on Switch 2?
CD PROJEKT RED’s technical support documentation defines two selectable frame-rate modes in the game’s Settings menu: Quality and Performance. These are official targets and specifications, not a promise that every busy street, combat encounter or effects-heavy scene remains at the maximum number at all times.

Quality mode: 30 FPS at 1080p
Quality mode is specified to run at 30 FPS with a 1080p resolution target in both TV and handheld modes. Choosing it gives the same stated resolution target regardless of whether the console is docked or being used as a portable system. The lower frame-rate target leaves the mode focused on a consistent, higher-resolution presentation rather than the quickest possible response.
Performance mode: up to 40 FPS
Performance mode targets up to 40 FPS at 1080p when playing on a TV. In handheld mode, its target is up to 40 FPS at 720p. That means portable players trade the Quality mode’s 1080p target for a lower resolution in exchange for a higher frame-rate target. CD PROJEKT RED also states that handheld mode uses VRR, which can make changes in frame delivery appear smoother on the Switch 2 screen.

| Mode | TV resolution target | Handheld resolution target | Frame-rate target | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quality | 1080p | 1080p | 30 FPS | Players who prioritize the higher stated resolution in either mode |
| Performance | 1080p | 720p | Up to 40 FPS | Players who prioritize responsiveness, especially in handheld play |
Which mode should you choose?
Start with Quality if you usually play docked on a large television and prefer the 1080p presentation at a locked 30-FPS-style cadence. Performance is the more sensible first choice for fast aiming, driving and close-range combat, or if you notice and dislike the feel of 30 FPS. In handheld mode, the decision is also a resolution-versus-responsiveness trade-off: Quality is specified at 1080p, while Performance targets 720p and adds VRR support.
You can change the mode in the in-game Settings menu rather than committing to a separate download or edition. Because the documentation describes targets, actual frame delivery can vary with the scene, effects and workload. No official average frame-rate benchmark or battery-runtime figure is published for this version, so claims of a permanently locked 40 FPS or a specific playtime should not be treated as established specifications.
Resolution, VRR and the practical picture
TV play
Both modes list a 1080p TV target. Quality uses that target at 30 FPS; Performance keeps the 1080p target while aiming for up to 40 FPS. A television’s size and viewing distance affect how noticeable differences in image reconstruction or motion are, but the official mode descriptions do not provide a separate pixel-count breakdown for individual scenes.
Handheld play
Quality mode is listed at 1080p in handheld mode, while Performance mode is listed at 720p. Performance’s lower handheld resolution is paired with VRR. VRR allows the display to adjust its refresh timing to the delivered frame rate, reducing visible judder when frame times fluctuate. It does not turn a 40-FPS target into a guaranteed 40 FPS, and it does not increase the game’s rendered resolution.

What the specifications do not establish
- They do not state that every scene is locked at 30 or 40 FPS.
- They do not provide an independent average frame-rate test across missions, driving or combat.
- They do not publish a battery-life estimate for Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2.
- They do not describe a separate performance setting for docked resolutions beyond the stated 1080p targets.
How the Switch 2 controls work
Nintendo lists touch-screen, gyro, motion and mouse features for the Switch 2 release. These additions are optional layers over conventional controls rather than mandatory replacements for the standard control scheme.
Touch controls in handheld and tabletop modes
With the console’s screen available, you can tap, swipe and pinch in Inventory, Perks, Map and other menus. Touch is therefore most useful for navigation and management tasks: selecting an item, moving around a map or adjusting a menu without moving a cursor with an analog stick. The documented touch support concerns these interface interactions; it should not be read as a promise that every gameplay action can be performed on the screen.
Gyro and motion with separated Joy-Con 2 controllers
Separated Joy-Con 2 controllers add gyro aiming and motion actions. Nintendo describes motion gestures that can attack, dodge and use health items. The developer team also described rolling the left Joy-Con 2 to dodge and using motion patterns for healing and dodging.
Recommended Free Tools
CD PROJEKT RED gameplay technical design expert Filip Downar summarized the design approach as: “The philosophy was to do it but not force it.” The point is to offer an action when it genuinely improves the interaction while retaining ordinary button and stick inputs. Downar also said the team had to create patterns that matched expectations for a control system no one had used before, and that too many patterns could confuse players.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Mouse mode from the right Joy-Con 2
The right Joy-Con 2 can be detached and placed on its side to use its mouse sensor. This provides a mouse-style pointing option for supported interactions. It requires the detached Joy-Con 2 hardware; simply owning a Pro Controller does not reproduce that sensor feature.
Pro Controller and conventional play
The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is supported in any play mode. It is the straightforward choice if you want a conventional two-stick, button-and-trigger layout on a television, in tabletop mode or with the console docked. The Pro Controller does not provide the detached Joy-Con 2 mouse sensor, and it cannot substitute for Joy-Con 2 when you specifically want the documented motion, gyro or mouse functions.
| Feature | Hardware required | Where it is useful |
|---|---|---|
| Touch navigation | Switch 2 screen | Inventory, Perks, Map and other menus in handheld or tabletop mode |
| Gyro aiming | Joy-Con 2 | Fine aiming adjustments during play |
| Motion actions | Separated Joy-Con 2 controllers | Attacking, dodging and using health items through gestures |
| Mouse mode | Right Joy-Con 2 detached and placed on its side | Mouse-sensor pointing interactions |
| Standard controls | Joy-Con 2 or Switch 2 Pro Controller | All ordinary movement, combat and menu inputs |
How much storage does Cyberpunk 2077 need?
Digital requirement: plan for at least 60.5 GB
Nintendo’s 2025 eShop listing gives a “Required Space” figure of 60.5 GB for Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo notes that installation can require more or less free space than the displayed amount. The practical planning figure is therefore at least 60.5 GB free before starting a digital installation, with additional room left for updates and any language packs you choose to add.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy CD PROJEKT RED says approximately 59 GB
CD PROJEKT RED’s support article, updated in 2025, describes the game as approximately 59 GB. The two numbers refer to different official measurements and contexts: the publisher’s approximate game-size description and Nintendo’s eShop installation requirement. They are not evidence that one listing is for a different game. Use Nintendo’s larger 60.5 GB requirement when checking available space, then add headroom.

Physical edition: a 64 GB game card
The physical Ultimate Edition is shipped on a 64 GB game card. CD PROJEKT RED states that the physical version runs directly from the game card, so the initial game data does not have to be copied wholesale to internal storage just to launch the cartridge.
The card does not eliminate every storage requirement. CD PROJEKT RED says future updates and additional language packs must be installed to internal storage or an SD card for both physical and digital versions. Those additions can increase the total space used after purchase.
microSD Express compatibility
Nintendo states that Switch 2 is compatible only with microSD Express cards. A regular microSD card that worked in an earlier Switch model is not the correct expansion format for this console. If internal free space is below the 60.5 GB digital requirement, install the game to a compatible microSD Express card, and size that card for the game plus the updates and other software you expect to keep installed.
| Purchase format | Initial data location | Extra storage still needed |
|---|---|---|
| Digital eShop download | Switch 2 internal storage or microSD Express card | Room for the 60.5 GB Nintendo-listed requirement, updates and optional language packs |
| Physical 64 GB game card | Game card runs the base installation directly | Internal storage or microSD Express space for updates and optional language packs |
Installation steps and space checks
For a digital purchase
- Open the Nintendo eShop on Switch 2 and select the Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition listing for your region.
- Before downloading, check available internal storage. Treat 60.5 GB as the minimum planning figure because Nintendo lists it as Required Space.
- If internal storage is insufficient, insert a Nintendo Switch 2-compatible microSD Express card and choose it as the install destination when prompted.
- Leave additional free space for installation overhead, future updates and any language packs you intend to download.
- After installation, check the game’s update status before launching. An update can require temporary free space even when the final installed size appears to fit.
For the physical edition
- Insert the 64 GB game card and allow the console to recognize the title.
- Launch from the card to play the game data stored on it.
- Connect to the internet and check for updates, since patches are separate from the card’s original contents.
- Reserve internal or microSD Express space for those updates and for optional language packs.
If installation fails for lack of space
- Confirm that the available destination is internal storage or a microSD Express card, not an incompatible older card.
- Delete or archive unused software, then retry with more free space than the displayed requirement.
- For a physical copy, remember that an update can be the part that fails even though the game card itself is present.
- If you do not need additional language packs, skip them to reduce the final storage footprint.
What is included in the Switch 2 Ultimate Edition?
The Ultimate Edition includes the Cyberpunk 2077 base game and the Phantom Liberty expansion. It is the complete package offered for Nintendo Switch 2, rather than a base-game-only release that requires a separate expansion purchase. The same edition is available as the 64 GB physical card or as a digital eShop download, subject to regional listing details.

A practical setup for different players
TV-focused players
Use Quality mode if your priority is the 1080p/30-FPS presentation specified for both modes’ TV resolution target and you prefer a slower, steadier cadence. Choose Performance if faster response matters more; it retains the 1080p TV target while aiming for up to 40 FPS.
Handheld-focused players
Performance mode is the option designed around responsiveness in portable play, with an up-to-40-FPS target, a 720p resolution target and handheld VRR. Quality mode keeps the stated 1080p handheld target at 30 FPS. Try both in a familiar area, then keep the one whose motion and image clarity you prefer.
Players who want every control option
Keep Joy-Con 2 available as separated controllers to access gyro, motion gestures and the right-controller mouse mode. Use the touchscreen for menu navigation when playing handheld or tabletop. A Pro Controller is the better fit for a conventional control layout, but it cannot supply the detached Joy-Con 2 mouse sensor.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Players buying physical media
The 64 GB card reduces the need to copy the base game to internal storage, but it is not a zero-storage solution. Reserve expansion space before purchase for patches and language packs, and use only a microSD Express card for Switch 2 storage expansion.
Bottom line for Switch 2 buyers
Cyberpunk 2077 on Nintendo Switch 2 offers a clearly defined choice: 30 FPS at 1080p in Quality mode, or an up-to-40-FPS Performance target with 1080p on TV and 720p in handheld mode, where VRR is supported. Joy-Con 2 adds optional touch, gyro, motion and mouse interactions, while the Pro Controller covers conventional play. Budget at least 60.5 GB of free space for a digital install, more for updates and language packs, or use the 64 GB physical card while still reserving expansion storage.
