What you get on Switch 2
A dedicated version rather than a generic compatibility mode
Cyberpunk 2077 launched on Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. The port is tuned for Nintendo’s hardware instead of asking the owner to find a workable combination of PC settings. It starts in a quality-oriented mode and uses DLSS to reconstruct a higher-resolution image from a lower internal rendering resolution.
That distinction matters when comparing screenshots or frame-rate impressions. A console port can select fixed crowd, traffic, lighting and texture budgets that developers have tested together. Steam Deck exposes many of those choices to the player, but the player also has to balance them. The two versions therefore represent different kinds of optimization, not just different settings on the same build.

The physical Ultimate Edition
The physical Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition is supplied on a 64GB cartridge and can be played without an initial download, according to TechRadar’s 2025 listing. It includes the base game, the Phantom Liberty expansion and the years of content updates that accompany the complete package. Cartridge availability and any required later patches can vary by retailer and software revision, so check the packaging and console prompts for the exact edition you are buying.
A digital purchase follows the usual console download process. The physical edition is most useful if you want an offline-friendly boxed copy or prefer to move the game between consoles without redownloading the main package.
Handheld performance and image quality
Why Switch 2 looks sharper
PC Gamer reported that Switch 2’s DLSS-upscaled 1080p image looked sharper than Steam Deck’s 800p handheld presentation and sharper than the Deck’s FSR-upscaled docked image. In handheld play, textures were broadly similar, but Switch 2 produced clearer interface text, greater draw distance and fewer visible reconstruction artifacts.

The larger pixel count is part of the explanation. Switch 2’s 1920×1080 panel displays 2.25 times as many pixels as a 1280×800 panel before any reconstruction advantage is considered. DLSS also handles edges and fine detail differently from the FSR 2.1 configuration used by Steam Deck’s quality preset. The result is not that every surface is dramatically higher quality; rather, the whole scene, especially lettering and distant geometry, tends to look more defined on Switch 2.
What “smoother” means here
PC Gamer judged Switch 2 slightly smoother overall in direct use. That is a comparative observation, not a claim of a locked frame rate. Both systems can stutter in dense areas, and both reduce vehicle and crowd density compared with a high-end PC running the game without those constraints.
Switch 2 starts in quality mode. When the console is connected to a 120Hz display, its software can switch to a performance mode. The available evidence does not establish a universal, locked 60-frame-per-second result for the game, so “performance mode” should not be read as a guarantee that every scene runs at 60fps. It is a different balance of image quality and frame-time behavior selected for the connected-display situation.

Steam Deck’s adjustable trade-offs
Steam Deck’s quality preset uses FSR 2.1 automatically in the cited setup and does not use frame generation. The advantage is control: you can change resolution, texture and crowd-related options, frame-rate limits, refresh rate and other launch or display settings. The disadvantage is that every change can trade image stability for sharpness, battery life or consistency, and the best combination can differ between the open city, combat and the Phantom Liberty areas.

Raising the Deck’s output resolution for a television does not automatically produce a clearer image. PC Gamer found that the image could become blurrier at higher output resolutions, because the handheld hardware must reconstruct more pixels from a limited rendering budget. A lower output target with a stable upscaler can look better than a nominally higher resolution that has to be reconstructed too aggressively.
Dense scenes and Phantom Liberty
Both versions lower vehicle and crowd density from a high-end PC configuration. This is most noticeable when comparing traffic-heavy streets or busy hubs with desktop footage. TechRadar called the Switch 2 port highly accomplished overall but identified rougher areas in Phantom Liberty. Its reviewer still described the Switch 2 image as crisper and handheld performance as more consistent than Steam Deck OLED in direct use. Those comments suggest that the expansion is playable on Switch 2, while also warning that the most demanding content is where compromises are easiest to see.
Docked performance and TV play
Switch 2 gains headroom in the dock
The Switch 2 dock provides higher clock speeds and additional GPU headroom. PC Gamer found the docked console a little more powerful than the handheld configuration. That can help maintain the selected presentation when the system is connected to a television, although the game still uses its own resolution and performance targets rather than behaving like a high-end desktop PC.
Docked Switch 2 is also the simpler living-room solution. The console is designed to be placed in the dock, wake on the television and use detachable Joy-Con controllers without buying a separate docking accessory. If your priority is switching from handheld to TV play with minimal setup, this is a meaningful advantage.
Steam Deck on an external display
Steam Deck can also drive an external monitor or television, but it behaves like a small PC. You may need to choose an output resolution, refresh rate and scaling method, then adjust the game’s settings to keep frame times acceptable. That flexibility is useful if you already understand PC display settings or want to experiment with different refresh rates. It is less convenient if you expect a fixed console profile.

The Deck’s higher-output-resolution option is not a free quality upgrade. The cited comparison found the image could become softer when the output target was raised. A television with good scaling, a carefully chosen internal resolution and a sensible frame-rate cap can produce a better result than simply selecting the largest number in the display menu.
Battery life: the tests and their limits
PC Gamer’s matched Cyberpunk scene
PC Gamer tested both devices at maximum brightness with airplane mode enabled and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth disabled while displaying a demanding city scene. In that controlled scenario, Switch 2 lasted about 2 hours 15 minutes, while Steam Deck lasted about 1 hour 30 minutes.
The roughly 45-minute difference favors Switch 2 for a long flight, commute or uninterrupted session, but it describes that specific scene and configuration. Cyberpunk’s power draw changes with brightness, frame-rate limits, scene complexity, wireless activity and whether the system is charging accessories.

Tom’s Guide reported a different result in a January 2026 test: Switch 2 depleted after 2 hours 40 minutes, while Steam Deck OLED lasted 2 hours 9 minutes. Tom’s Guide explicitly cautioned that one test does not establish a universal winner. The two reports use different procedures and, in the latter case, a Steam Deck OLED rather than the LCD model used for the display comparison.

How to use the numbers
Use the tests as directional evidence rather than a promise for your own battery. Switch 2 generally has the stronger result in the cited Cyberpunk measurements, but the margin is not fixed. For predictable travel, set a brightness level before you leave, use a frame-rate or performance mode appropriate to the scene and carry a suitable charger or battery solution for either device.
Displays and physical features
Switch 2’s screen
PC Gamer lists Switch 2 with a 7.9-inch 1920×1080 120Hz LCD and handheld variable refresh rate. The larger 7.9-inch area makes menus and subtitles easier to read, while the 120Hz ceiling and VRR give the system more room to present uneven frame times without the same fixed-refresh behavior as a 60Hz panel.

VRR does not create additional performance. It can make changes in frame timing look less distracting when the game is operating within the display’s supported range. It also does not turn the game into a guaranteed 120fps or 60fps experience.

The compared Steam Deck LCD has a 7-inch 1280×800 display with a 60Hz maximum. Steam Deck OLED offers stronger color and contrast, but the OLED panel does not change the fundamental PC-style nature of the platform. The OLED model is the one used in Tom’s Guide’s separate battery test; do not combine its runtime directly with the LCD unit’s runtime as if they were one standardized measurement.
Switch 2 therefore wins on pixel count, screen size and refresh-rate headroom in the cited hardware specifications. Steam Deck OLED can be preferable if richer contrast and color are more important to you than raw resolution, while the LCD Deck remains the reference for the 1280×800 comparison.

Why Switch 2 feels more like a console
Digital Foundry’s system summary describes Switch 2 as a streamlined, console-like device with a stable operating system and reliable docking. Joy-Con controllers detach, support a mouse-like mode and can be used without purchasing a separate dock. You select the game, choose the available display mode and play without managing a desktop environment.
This simplicity is especially valuable for Cyberpunk 2077 because the game is long and settings changes are rarely the reason someone bought a console. The dedicated port gives you a known control layout and a tested configuration. You give up some of the fine-grained choices available on PC, but you also avoid troubleshooting a setting that made the image unstable.
Why Steam Deck feels more like a PC
Steam Deck includes trackpads, desktop-style controls, overlays and extensive access to settings. You can use launch options, alter refresh rates, install utilities and manage a large existing Steam library from the same device. Those tools make it easier to tailor Cyberpunk 2077 to your preferred balance of sharpness, frame pacing, battery use and control method.

The trade-off is responsibility. Compatibility layers, updates, controller layouts, external displays and per-game settings can all require attention. That is a benefit for an enthusiast and a potential distraction for someone who wants to resume a game from the couch with no configuration work.
Software breadth, mods and ownership flexibility
Steam Deck’s decisive advantage
Steam Deck can play a broader variety of PC software, including older games that may never receive a Switch 2 release. The Steam ecosystem also makes mods, community control layouts, launch arguments and other PC utilities easier to access. If you already own a large Steam backlog, the Deck can be a second library as well as a Cyberpunk machine.
Modding is a practical differentiator rather than a minor feature. A Deck owner can experiment with the PC version’s supported modding ecosystem, subject to compatibility and the risk that a game update breaks a mod. Switch 2 is a closed console environment: it offers the shipped port and official updates, not the same general-purpose mod workflow.

Before playing on Switch 2

- Start in the default quality mode so you can judge the intended image before changing display behavior.
- If you connect to a 120Hz display, check whether performance mode better suits your preference for frame-time consistency.
- For handheld play, set a comfortable brightness level and enable the console’s supported VRR behavior rather than assuming it will increase the frame rate.
- Use the dock for TV sessions when you want the additional clock-speed and GPU headroom available in the docked configuration.
Before playing on Steam Deck
- Begin with the game’s quality preset, which uses FSR 2.1 in the cited configuration, and confirm that the image and frame pacing suit you.
- Change one setting at a time—resolution, upscaling, crowd or traffic-related options, frame cap or refresh rate—so you can identify which adjustment affects image quality or stability.
- For an external display, choose a sensible output resolution instead of automatically selecting the highest number; the cited comparison found higher output settings could look blurrier.

- Only then add launch options, community layouts or mods, and keep a way to undo the last change if an update causes a problem.
Important caveats before you decide
- There is no single universal Cyberpunk 2077 frame-rate result established by the cited comparisons. Scene complexity, mode, display and software updates affect behavior.
- “Switch 2 is sharper” describes the tested handheld and docked presentations, not every possible television, scaling mode or user-selected Deck configuration.
- The battery figures are not interchangeable laboratory standards: PC Gamer and Tom’s Guide used different procedures, and Tom’s Guide tested Steam Deck OLED rather than the LCD unit used in the display comparison.
- Switch 2’s port is optimized for that console, so a direct hardware comparison with a general PC build is inherently imperfect.
- Both systems reduce traffic and crowd density compared with a high-end PC configuration, and both can show stutter in dense areas.
- Phantom Liberty is included in the physical Switch 2 Ultimate Edition, but TechRadar noted rougher areas in that expansion on the port.
Verdict
For most players who want to play Cyberpunk 2077 as a portable console game, Switch 2 is the easier recommendation. Its larger, sharper handheld image, dedicated optimization, straightforward docking and better results in the cited battery tests make it the more polished appliance-like package. The physical Ultimate Edition also puts the base game and Phantom Liberty on a 64GB cartridge.
Steam Deck is the better answer when “better” means more control and more software. Its PC settings, trackpads, mods, launch options and Steam library give it capabilities Switch 2 intentionally does not provide. Digital Foundry’s Oliver Mackenzie summarized the distinction well: Switch 2 is better as a console-like device, while the Deck can play a larger variety of software. Pick the platform whose compromises you will notice least.
