What “quest mods” mean in Cyberpunk 2077
A quest mod is a community-made add-on that introduces mission content beyond the shipped game. Depending on its design, it may add a new journal objective, map marker, dialogue scene, combat encounter, branching decision or end-of-quest reward. It is different from a cosmetic mod that only changes clothing, hair, weapons or visual effects.
CD PROJEKT RED’s modding documentation explicitly presents mods as capable of adding “new clothing, hairstyles, quests, districts, and much more.” The same documentation warns that Cyberpunk 2077 mods are created by the community and “not reviewed by CD PROJEKT RED.” That distinction explains the entire comparison: quest mods can expand the game, but official side jobs and gigs are the supported baseline.

REDmod is the official mod-support layer
REDmod is a free DLC for Cyberpunk 2077. It adds integrated support for installing and loading compatible mods and includes tools for creating them. New REDmod-compatible files are placed in the game’s Cyberpunk 2077mods folder. REDlauncher or GOG Galaxy can enable or disable compatible mods.
REDmod does not turn every community project into an official-quality quest. A mod can still require additional frameworks, become incompatible after a game patch or contain bugs that only its author can fix. Treat REDmod as the loading and authoring infrastructure, not as a quality seal.
What counts as official side-job and gig content
Cyberpunk 2077’s own quest data separates several categories rather than treating every optional mission as the same thing. The documented taxonomy includes [SideQuest], [MinorQuest] and [StreetStory] entries. In the user interface, players commonly call many of these “side jobs,” while fixer-provided contracts are usually called “gigs.” The categories overlap in the broad sense that they are optional activities, but they differ in presentation, structure and data classification.

- The Hunt

These missions can focus on relationships, investigations, personal histories, stealth, combat or consequential decisions. They use the game’s existing characters, locations, cinematics, progression systems and voice-direction pipeline.

Gigs and street stories
The quest reference also places The Gig within the side-quest taxonomy. Phantom Liberty adds street-story gigs including Dogtown Saints, The Man Who Killed Jason Foreman, Prototype in the Scraper, Heaviest of Hearts, Roads to Redemption, Spy in the Jungle, Waiting for Dodger, Treating Symptoms and Talent Academy.
In practical terms, a gig is generally a shorter, fixer-commissioned operation with an objective such as extraction, theft, sabotage or elimination. A side job is more likely to follow a character or investigation across several scenes, although the game’s internal labels are the authoritative distinction—not a rigid rule about length.
How community quest mods are built
The open-source cyberpunk-codes project documents a toolset for creating story gigs. Its examples—Negative Balance, Dead Ringer and Acceptable Loss—show the range a determined creator can target:

- Scenes with voiced dialogue and lip-sync.
- Reusable builders for common mission structures.
- Map pins and custom non-player characters.
- Video holocalls and breach interactions.
- Choices that change a payout.
- Wanted-level scripting.
- End-of-quest rewards.
Those are documented features of the named projects, not a promise that every quest mod includes them. A simple mod may consist of text, triggers and a combat encounter; a high-effort project may provide a sequence of directed scenes. Read the individual author’s feature list and screenshots rather than inferring quality from the word “quest.”

Which route should you choose?
Choose official content first when stability matters
A vanilla-first route is best for a first playthrough, a console player, anyone using cloud saves or anyone who does not want to troubleshoot files. Finish the side jobs and gigs available in your edition, including the Phantom Liberty street stories if you own the expansion. They are already connected to the game’s progression, save system, achievements and update process.
Choose quest mods when you want more stories
Mods make sense after you understand the unmodified game and want additional missions, unusual premises or creator-made branching. They are especially attractive when you have completed the official optional content and are comfortable maintaining a separate mod setup. Keep expectations specific: a project can be imaginative and mechanically interesting without matching the writing, animation or direction of a CDPR production.
How to install a REDmod quest mod safely
Installation instructions differ by project, so the mod’s own page takes precedence. Use this checklist before copying anything:
- Record your game version. Check the launcher or executable version and note whether Phantom Liberty is installed. A mod marked for version 2.0 is not automatically compatible with every later patch.
- Read the requirements list. Confirm REDmod and every named dependency, including ArchiveXL, redscript or other libraries. Install the exact versions requested by the author where available.
- Back up saves. Copy important saves outside the game’s normal save directory. A quest mod can add persistent data that remains in a save after the mod is removed.
- Install REDmod. Add the free DLC through your platform, then verify that the launcher recognizes it. REDlauncher or GOG Galaxy provides the documented enable/disable controls for REDmod-compatible files.
- Copy the mod to the correct location. For a REDmod-compatible project, place its folder under
Cyberpunk 2077mods. Do not assume an archive’s top-level folder is correct; open the archive and follow the author’s directory layout. - Install non-REDmod dependencies separately. Some projects use archive, scripting or redirection frameworks. Follow each dependency’s own folder instructions instead of placing every file in
mods. - Enable and launch. Activate the mod in REDlauncher or GOG Galaxy when the project supports that control, then start the game and check for its journal entry or map marker.
- Test on a separate save. Confirm that the game loads, the quest starts and key interactions work before continuing your main playthrough.
Never overwrite a working installation without knowing how to remove the files. Keep a plain-text list of installed mods and their versions; it turns later troubleshooting into a reversible process.

Common problems and recovery steps
The quest does not appear
- Check that the mod is enabled in the launcher or the project’s required mod manager.
- Verify that the files are under the path specified by the author, not one directory too deep after extraction.
- Read the trigger conditions. Some quests begin only after a level, main-story mission, phone call or in-game time has passed.
- Confirm every dependency loaded successfully and that the mod supports your patch and expansion combination.
The game crashes on launch
- Disable the newly installed quest mod and its dependencies, then test the unmodified game.
- Check whether a recent game update invalidated the listed framework version.
- Remove only the files belonging to the failing project, using your installation list, and restore the backed-up save if necessary.
Dialogue, lip-sync or scenes are broken
Presentation features are project-specific. Missing voice files, outdated scripting frameworks or conflicts with another mod can prevent a scene from playing correctly. Read the author’s compatibility notes and load-order guidance; do not assume REDmod can resolve a conflict automatically.
Removing the mod does not restore the save
Quest state, inventory rewards or world changes may already be written to a save. Return to a save made before installation whenever possible. If no clean save exists, reinstall the required files long enough to load the affected save, complete or abandon the quest as the author recommends, and then follow the project’s removal instructions.

- Update date and target patch: Prefer a listing that clearly states the current Cyberpunk 2077 version and whether Phantom Liberty is required.
- Dependency transparency: Look for a complete list of REDmod, ArchiveXL, redscript and other prerequisites.
- Scope: Distinguish a short gig from a multi-stage quest with scenes, NPCs, choices and rewards.
- Installation path: The author should explain whether files belong in
mods, an archive directory or a framework-specific folder. - Known issues: Read comments and changelogs for save warnings, conflicts and trigger conditions.
- Support channel: CD PROJEKT RED directs mod-related technical questions to creators, so an active author and clear troubleshooting notes matter.
There is no authoritative mod count, review score or completion-time figure that can be applied to the whole scene. Evaluate each project on its own documentation and current compatibility notes.

Quest mods are an expansion lane rather than a replacement. Projects such as Negative Balance, Dead Ringer and Acceptable Loss demonstrate that creators can build journal systems, quest graphs, custom NPCs, voiced scenes, branching payouts and other ambitious mechanics. Install them only after checking the game patch, expansion requirement, dependencies, folder path and author support status. That trade-off—more stories in exchange for more maintenance—is the honest difference between the two.
