What is Cyberpunk 2077 about?
V’s job becomes a fight for survival
CD PROJEKT RED describes V as a cyberpunk mercenary rising through Night City. V accepts a contract to steal a one-of-a-kind implant tied to immortality, and the consequences of that job become the central problem of the game. The immediate question is how V can stay alive; the deeper questions are who controls V’s body and memories, what makes a person unique, and whether a life is measured by its length or by the mark it leaves.

V is player-defined. You choose V’s gender presentation, voice, appearance, attributes, skills and moral direction, so the protagonist should not be treated as having one fixed personality. Two players can experience the same opening premise while making V compassionate, ruthless, loyal, opportunistic or something in between.

Night City is more than a backdrop
Night City is a corporate-ruled megalopolis built from polished towers, industrial zones, gang territory and the Badlands beyond the urban core. The city’s wealth and violence exist side by side: private security and advanced medical technology sit close to deprivation, addiction and heavily armed neighborhoods.
Lead writer Tomasz Marchewka summarized the design idea by saying, “Quite quickly, during pre-production of Cyberpunk 2077, we realized that Night City is going to be our main antagonist.” The city applies pressure through corporations, gangs, state power, media, technology and economic dependence. A personal decision often has consequences because an institution, family or community is waiting to exploit it.
The human question underneath the technology
Johnny Silverhand makes the game’s identity conflict visible. He is a rockerboy and a digital presence whose relationship with V turns abstract questions about memory and selfhood into an ongoing argument. V must decide how much to trust him, resist him or understand him, while Johnny’s ideas about rebellion and legacy challenge V’s own priorities.

Is survival worthwhile at any cost? Who gets to define your legacy?
How the story is structured
It is a branching RPG, not a single linear film
The main campaign provides a clear spine, but many of its most important consequences come from optional content. Lifepath dialogue can change how V approaches people and institutions. Side quests can deepen relationships, reveal hidden motives and create additional choices near the finale. Romance quests and alliance missions can also affect which support networks are available later.
The useful way to think about the structure is as several overlapping pressures:

- Relationships versus institutions: Friends, lovers and chosen families offer alternatives to corporations and governments, each with its own risks.
- A quiet life versus a legendary one: Some paths value safety and continuity; others pursue fame, rebellion or a final act that will be remembered.
- Personal cost: Every route asks what V is willing to sacrifice, and whether that sacrifice belongs to V or to someone else.
The point of no return
Near the end of the base game, a mission warns you that you are approaching a point of no return. Before accepting that sequence, make a manual save if you want to compare routes. You can continue many unfinished activities beforehand, and the game will generally remind you when the final sequence is about to begin. The final route then reflects the relationships and decisions you created earlier rather than functioning as a completely separate chapter.
Key characters and what they represent
V
V is the viewpoint character and the person whose identity is under pressure. Because V is customisable, the game’s moral questions belong to the player rather than to a predetermined hero.
Johnny Silverhand
Johnny represents rebellion, memory and the desire to outlive the body. His conflict with V makes questions about legacy concrete. The relationship changes according to your dialogue and quest choices.
Jackie Welles
Jackie is V’s early partner and an emotional baseline for the mercenary life. His friendship establishes what solidarity looks like before the larger forces surrounding V become impossible to ignore.
Judy Álvarez, Panam Palmer, Goro Takemura and Rogue Amendiares
These major allies embody different kinds of loyalty. Judy’s quests explore intimacy and community; Panam’s emphasize family and mutual aid; Takemura brings institutional duty and personal honor into conflict; Rogue connects V to Night City’s history and the cost of becoming a legend. Their quest lines are optional, but completing them can change the choices available at the end.

Phantom Liberty’s cast
Phantom Liberty introduces Solomon Reed, a NUSA secret agent, along with Songbird, NUSA president Rosalind Myers and Kurt Hansen. Their conflict takes place in Dogtown, a walled-off district controlled by Hansen, an arms dealer and warlord. The expansion shifts the tone toward espionage, divided loyalties and state-level manipulation.

Where Phantom Liberty fits
Phantom Liberty is an expansion for the base game, not a separate replacement campaign. It adds a spy-thriller storyline in Dogtown while remaining connected to V’s existing problem. You can approach it during the main campaign once its story becomes available, but playing enough of the base game first gives the characters, factions and personal stakes more context.
The expansion adds new gigs, side quests, weapons, vehicles, clothing and cyberware. CD PROJEKT RED announced “over 100 new items (vehicles, weapons, clothing, and cyberware)” and also introduced a Relic skill tree. Its decisions can create an additional conclusion for V’s overall story, but they do not erase every ending route from the base game.
Does Phantom Liberty change the ending?
It changes the set of possibilities rather than replacing the original finale. Phantom Liberty has its own branching decisions, and a particular expansion route can unlock an additional epilogue for V. The original base-game ending families remain part of the game, so your Dogtown choices are an added branch in the larger structure.
How many endings does Cyberpunk 2077 have?
There is no single number that captures every variation cleanly. The game has several major ending families, optional variations within those families and a secret approach that can be unlocked through prior choices. Phantom Liberty adds another major branch and an additional epilogue.
It is more accurate to describe the finale as a family of endings than as one canonical conclusion. The routes differ in who helps V, what V prioritizes, how much control V retains and what kind of future remains possible.
Is there a true ending or a happy ending?
Cyberpunk 2077 does not identify one route as its official “true ending.” Each conclusion answers the central dilemma differently, and the game deliberately leaves room for the player to decide which values matter most.

There are outcomes that can feel hopeful because V leaves Night City with people who care about them, and outcomes that feel triumphant because V achieves legendary status. None is an uncomplicated fairy-tale resolution. Even the most optimistic routes carry uncertainty, loss or a price paid by V or by someone close to V.
Which edition includes Phantom Liberty?
The Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition combines the base game, the Phantom Liberty expansion and released updates. CD PROJEKT RED announced digital and physical versions for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC, with physical distribution in selected markets.

If you already own the base game, buying Phantom Liberty separately is the way to add the expansion. If you are starting from nothing, Ultimate Edition is the straightforward bundle, but confirm the platform generation and regional product listing before purchasing.
How to prepare for the finale without spoilers
- Keep a manual save before the point-of-no-return warning. This is the safest way to revisit the final decision without replaying the entire campaign.
- Finish companion quest lines you care about. Optional allies and relationship quests can affect the support choices presented in the finale.
- Complete Phantom Liberty decisions before committing to its final branch. The expansion’s spy-thriller choices can open an additional epilogue, so do not rush through Dogtown if you want to see its consequences.
- Use the save system deliberately. Make separate saves before major conversations rather than relying only on autosaves.
- Do not chase a supposed canonical answer. Choose the route that matches the version of V you have played; the game is designed around interpretation rather than one mandated solution.
Spoilers: the ending routes and major choices
Stop here if you want to remain completely unspoiled. The finale begins after the mission Nocturne OP55N1, when V reaches the meeting at Embers and the game locks in the final sequence. The following summaries describe the major routes and their broad outcomes.
The Devil
V accepts Hanako Arasaka’s plan and relies on the corporation’s institutional power. This route focuses on obedience, corporate control and the possibility that technological treatment can preserve life while changing what that life means. Its conclusion is deliberately clinical and isolating rather than a conventional victory.
The Star
V asks the Aldecaldos for help and leaves Night City with the nomad family. The route emphasizes chosen family, mutual support and a future outside the city’s systems. It is often read as the most hopeful ending, although the game does not promise a cure or a guaranteed future.

The Sun
V works with Rogue to attack Arasaka and emerges as a legendary figure in Night City. This path values reputation, achievement and the dream of becoming an icon. Its success comes with continuing uncertainty about V’s health and the cost of living as a legend.
Temperance
At the final decision, V can allow Johnny Silverhand to keep the body. The result completes Johnny’s transformation from a digital presence into the person who must live with the consequences. It is an ending about surrender, identity and whether preserving someone else can be an act of freedom.
Path of Least Resistance
V can choose not to make another person pay for the final assault. This option ends the story immediately and is intentionally bleak. It is available as a direct rejection of the other bargains rather than as a hidden ideal solution.

If specific earlier relationship choices meet the required threshold, V can attempt the final assault alone. This secret route is exceptionally dangerous. Depending on the final decision afterward, it can lead into the same broad Sun or Temperance conclusions while changing how V reaches them.
The Tower: Phantom Liberty’s additional epilogue
Phantom Liberty can unlock The Tower after the relevant Reed-aligned path and later follow-up choices. V receives treatment that removes the Relic problem, but the result is not a simple cure: V wakes after a long absence, cannot use cyberware as before and finds that relationships and the city have moved on.
CD PROJEKT RED support explains why this epilogue does not return you to the earlier point of no return: “This is as designed. Players returning to the Point of No Return after The Tower ending would result in an uncanny narrative experience we wanted to avoid.” The same support answer confirms that the game allows V’s story to end there. The Tower is therefore intentionally final rather than a loop back into the original finale.
What the endings are ultimately asking
Every route returns to the same conflict: V wants to live, but survival can require surrendering control, accepting institutional power, abandoning a relationship or allowing another identity to take over. Night City’s systems make private choices political, while Johnny makes the question of legacy impossible to ignore.
That is why the ending is best understood as a reflection of the choices you made across the whole game, not as a puzzle with one objectively correct answer. Side quests, alliances and the people V chooses to trust are not decorative detours; they determine which values can shape the final decision.
