Short answer: buy the physical 64 GB game card if you value resale, collecting, lending, or reducing the first download. Buy the digital Nintendo eShop version if you want immediate access, effortless game switching, and no cartridge to carry. Both are the same Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, including the complete base game and the Phantom Liberty expansion.
CD PROJEKT RED launched this Switch 2 edition on June 5, 2025. The meaningful difference is the format, not the content: physical arrives on a 64 GB game card, while digital is downloaded to your console. Updates, optional language packs, current prices and stock can change, so check those details for your region immediately before buying.

What you get with either Switch 2 edition
There is no separate story campaign, expansion bundle or feature set exclusive to one format. The physical card and the eShop listing both identify the product as Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition. That package contains the base game and the Phantom Liberty spy-thriller expansion.

The Switch 2 release also incorporates every update CD PROJEKT RED had released since the original launch and adds motion, touch-screen, mouse and gyro controls. Those controls are part of the Switch 2 edition rather than a reason to choose one purchase format over the other.

CD PROJEKT RED describes its approach to the new controls through Gameplay Technical Design Expert Filip Downar: “The philosophy was to do it but not force it.” In practice, you can use the traditional controls or choose the new input methods where they suit you; buying a card does not remove any option that the download has.
Publishing Tech QA Analyst Jakub Smodrzak explained that the team had to develop its motion-testing process from the ground up: “We had to learn these motion systems from scratch, figure out a reliable way to verify their quality, and constantly share feedback.” That work applies to both formats because both run the same Switch 2 software.
Physical 64 GB card versus digital download
| Decision factor | Physical 64 GB game card | Digital Nintendo eShop version |
|---|---|---|
| What you receive | A boxed 64 GB game card for Nintendo Switch 2 | A license attached to your Nintendo Account and a download to the console |
| Content | Ultimate Edition: base game plus Phantom Liberty | Ultimate Edition: base game plus Phantom Liberty |
| Initial setup | Insert the card; updates or language packs may still download | Download the game before playing; the console needs enough free storage |
| Ownership flexibility | Can be resold, lent or collected; the card must be present to play | Cannot be resold as a cartridge; access is tied to the purchasing Nintendo Account |
| Switching games | Requires removing and inserting cards | Switch between installed games without handling a cartridge |
| Storage use | Most game data is supplied on the card, although patches and language downloads can add console storage requirements | The full game download occupies console storage, with additional space potentially needed for updates and language packs |
| Availability | Depends on retailer inventory and regional distribution | Depends on eShop access, account region and the listing remaining available |
| Price | Retailers set their own prices and may run physical sales | Nintendo eShop pricing and promotions vary by region and date |
The ownership, storage and convenience differences are practical consequences of a card and a download. They are not different game builds or publisher-rated performance tiers.
Choose physical if ownership flexibility matters
Reselling after you finish
A physical card remains a separate object that you can sell when you are done. Its resale value is not fixed: condition, local demand, stock and the age of the release all affect what another buyer will pay. If you routinely recover part of a game’s cost by selling it, the card gives you that option; a digital purchase does not create a transferable cartridge.
Lending to someone else
You can hand the card to a friend or family member who owns a compatible Switch 2. They will need the card whenever they play. Digital access is connected to the purchasing Nintendo Account, so it does not provide the same simple, physical handoff.
Building a collection
Collectors can keep the box and card together and display them. When ordering online or buying second-hand, verify that the package is specifically for Nintendo Switch 2 and says Ultimate Edition. The 64 GB card designation distinguishes this release from unrelated versions or listings that omit the expansion.

Reducing the first download
The boxed edition puts the game’s main data on the card. That can be useful on a slow or metered connection, but it is not a promise of a completely download-free installation. CD PROJEKT RED and Nintendo note that updates and additional language packs can still be downloaded, and language choices can change the final installed size.
Choose digital if convenience is your priority
Starting as soon as the download finishes
Digital buying removes the wait for a store shipment and the need to locate a stocked physical copy. After purchasing through the Nintendo eShop and completing the download, the game is available from the console menu. The speed of that first play depends on your connection and the download’s progress; the eShop listing does not eliminate that download step.
Switching games without swapping cards
If you move between several installed games during a session, digital is simpler. You do not have to find the Cyberpunk 2077 card, open the case, or remove another cartridge. The trade-off is that the title occupies internal or expandable console storage instead of sitting primarily on a card.
Avoiding a lost or damaged cartridge
Digital removes one small but real failure point: there is no physical card to misplace, bend or leave in another console. Your access remains associated with the Nintendo Account used to buy it, so protect that account and remember that changing consoles involves Nintendo’s account and download procedures rather than moving a card.
How storage and downloads differ
Physical setup
- Insert the 64 GB game card into the Switch 2.
- Start the game from the Home menu and allow any required update to install.
- Open the game’s language options and download any additional language pack you need from the Nintendo eShop.
- Leave enough free console storage for those updates and language files, even though the principal game data is supplied on the card.
The exact space consumed by language packs is not fixed in the available product information and can vary by the languages selected. Do not assume that a 64 GB card means every possible language file is already installed.

- Open Nintendo eShop on the Switch 2 and confirm that the listing is Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition for Nintendo Switch 2.
- Check the account’s region and the price shown at checkout; regional storefronts can display different currencies, prices and promotions.
- Complete the purchase and start the download over a reliable connection.
- Keep sufficient free storage for the download, subsequent updates and any optional language packs.
- Launch the game after installation and apply any update the console presents before beginning a long play session.
A digital purchase can be convenient once installed, but it does not reduce the storage requirement for the complete download. If your console is nearly full, clear space before checkout rather than discovering the problem halfway through installation.

Price, sales and availability
Nintendo states that retail partners set their own physical and digital prices, so there is no universal Switch 2 price that remains correct across countries or dates. A physical shop may discount an older box or run a clearance sale, while the eShop may offer a time-limited promotion. The reverse can also happen.
Compare the price displayed now, not an archived launch price. For a physical purchase, check several legitimate retailers and confirm shipping, region and stock. For a digital purchase, check the eShop associated with your Nintendo Account; changing storefront regions can affect payment, language availability and access to the listing.
If the two prices are close, the card generally gives you more ownership flexibility because it can be lent or resold, while the download gives you more day-to-day convenience. If the eShop price is substantially lower and you do not resell games, that discount may outweigh the physical format’s future flexibility.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Stock can disappear temporarily or permanently from a particular retailer, and an eShop listing can depend on the account region. Treat availability as a live condition and verify it immediately before payment.
Controls and updates are format-neutral
Both versions include the Switch 2 feature set: motion, touch-screen, mouse and gyro controls alongside conventional input. You can choose whether to use those methods; the quoted design philosophy was to add them without forcing them on every player.
The edition includes updates released since launch. A card does not freeze the software at the date printed on its box, and a download is not a separate “enhanced” package. Connect the console periodically so patches can be obtained, particularly after the first installation or when Nintendo presents an update notice.

Because patches can be delivered after purchase, the amount of data stored on the console can grow beyond the card’s supplied content. This is normal for either format and is separate from the choice between buying a card and buying an eShop license.

Decision guide for common buying situations
You plan to sell the game later
Choose physical. You retain a distinct card and box that can be offered to another player after you finish. Keep the packaging and card in good condition, and remember that the next player needs the card to launch the game.
You share games with friends
Choose physical if your sharing means handing a game to another person. A digital license is associated with the purchasing account rather than a freely transferable object.
You travel with several games
Choose digital if you want to leave cartridges at home and move between installed titles. Choose physical if you prefer carrying the card and want to limit how much of your console storage is occupied by the game’s download, while allowing room for patches and language files.
Your internet connection is slow or capped
Physical is usually the safer format for minimizing the initial download because the 64 GB card supplies the principal game data. It still may require online downloads for updates or additional languages, so arrange a connection before assuming setup is entirely offline.
Your console has limited free space
Physical can reduce the amount of space needed for the base installation, but you still need room for updates and selected language packs. Digital requires room for the complete download as well as those additions. Check free space before choosing either format.

- Somnium: Explore the eccentric dream world of potential suspects to uncover clues and secret memories!

You want the quickest purchase with no store trip
Digital is the direct route when the eShop listing is available in your account region and the price suits you. The game is not playable until the download completes, so “quickest purchase” does not necessarily mean “quickest first launch.”
You are buying a gift
Physical is the straightforward gift when you want to hand over a box and card. For a digital purchase, verify whose Nintendo Account will own the license before paying; the account relationship matters more than the console on which the game is first downloaded.
Checklist before you buy the physical edition
- Confirm the box identifies Nintendo Switch 2, not an older platform.
- Confirm the title is Ultimate Edition, which includes Phantom Liberty.
- Confirm the listing specifies the 64 GB game card.
- Check the retailer’s region, stock status, final price and delivery terms.
- Plan for possible update and language-pack downloads after inserting the card.
- Keep the card with its case if resale or collecting matters to you.
Checklist before you buy digital
- Open the Nintendo eShop tied to the account that should own the game.
- Verify the product name and Switch 2 platform on the listing.
- Check the current regional price and whether a promotion has an end date.
- Confirm adequate free console storage for the full download, updates and language files.
- Use a stable internet connection and allow the installation to finish before launching.
- Remember that the license remains associated with the purchasing Nintendo Account.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying the wrong platform version
Search results can mix platform listings. Read the product title and packaging details carefully; the edition discussed here is specifically for Nintendo Switch 2 and launched on June 5, 2025.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAssuming “64 GB” means no downloads
The card carries the principal game data, but updates and optional language packs may still download. Reserve storage and internet access before starting.
Comparing a launch price with today’s price
Retail and eShop prices change by region and date. Compare the amounts shown at the moment of purchase rather than relying on an old review, screenshot or price tracker.
Expecting physical and digital to have different gameplay
They contain the same Ultimate Edition content and Switch 2 controls. Format changes ownership and installation behavior, not the campaign or expansion included.
Ignoring account region
The eShop storefront, currency, listing availability and promotions depend on the Nintendo Account region. Verify that information before checkout, especially when buying a console or code from another market.

| Your highest priority | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Resale, collecting or lending | Physical 64 GB card | You retain a separate card and box that can be handed to another player or sold. |
| Fewer cartridge swaps | Digital eShop download | Installed access lets you change games without handling a card. |
| Minimizing the first download | Physical 64 GB card | The main game data is supplied on the card, although patches and language packs may still download. |
| Immediate online purchase | Digital eShop download | No retailer stock or delivery is involved, provided the listing is available in your region. |
| Lowest price today | Whichever is cheaper now | Nintendo says physical and digital prices vary by retailer, region and date; check both before paying. |
For most players, the deciding question is whether a transferable object or effortless access has more value. Pick the physical card when future flexibility and reduced initial downloading matter. Pick digital when convenience, account-based access and rapid switching matter. Neither choice sacrifices the base game, Phantom Liberty, or the Switch 2 control options.
