Choose Cyberpunk 2077 if you want a modern open-world RPG with cinematic quests, a large city to explore, driving, flexible character builds, and a current complete package that includes Phantom Liberty. Choose Deus Ex if you want compact first-person missions in which stealth, hacking, augmentations, equipment, dialogue, and environmental experimentation determine how objectives unfold.
Both games combine cyberpunk themes with role-playing and immersive-sim ideas, but they prioritize different experiences. Cyberpunk 2077 gives you scale and spectacle; Deus Ex makes alternate solutions the central design promise. Your preferred mission structure matters more than which game has the more futuristic setting.

What Cyberpunk 2077 and Deus Ex are trying to do
Cyberpunk 2077: a cinematic open-world RPG
CD PROJEKT RED announced Cyberpunk 2077 as an “open-world, action-adventure RPG.” You play a cyberpunk mercenary trying to survive in Night City, a large setting built around quests, activities, combat encounters, character progression, and travel by vehicle. The game is designed as a long-form role-playing adventure: you move through a broad city, meet recurring characters, make quest decisions, and shape a build that can combine shooting, melee, hacking, and stealth.

Deus Ex: a compact first-person immersive RPG
Eidos-Montréal describes Deus Ex as one of the most influential games of its generation and says that “Player freedom is at the heart of the gameplay and story of Deus Ex.” Its first-person missions are built around skills, augmentations, weapons, items, hacking, stealth, dialogue, and alternate routes through authored spaces and hubs.
Rather than asking you to cross a huge city between objectives, Deus Ex concentrates decisions inside dense mission locations. A locked door, guarded corridor, computer terminal, conversation, or piece of equipment can change your route. The appeal is not simply having many abilities on a character sheet; it is seeing those abilities interact with the environment and with the objective in front of you.

| Agency | Many build and quest choices within a guided, large-scale cinematic RPG | Multiple approaches to objectives are the defining design goal |
| Narrative feel | Character-focused, high-production open-world storytelling; Phantom Liberty adds a spy-thriller storyline in Dogtown | Conspiracy-driven cyberpunk storytelling where choices and mission solutions carry the appeal |
| Best for | Players wanting scale, spectacle, contemporary controls, and a long-form RPG | Players wanting systemic freedom, stealth routes, and experimentation in dense spaces |
How the worlds differ
Night City favors scale and momentum
Night City gives Cyberpunk 2077 its defining rhythm. You can move between districts, accept different kinds of quests, pursue character-focused storylines, and use vehicles to cross a broad urban map. The city makes the game feel like an ongoing life as a mercenary rather than a sequence of isolated operations. Driving is part of that identity, and the open structure lets you decide whether to follow the main story, take on optional work, or develop your character before a difficult encounter.
This scale also changes how you evaluate a choice. A build decision is not only about solving one room; it can affect how you approach many activities across a lengthy campaign. A player who enjoys trying different combat styles, moving between quest types, and seeing a build operate across a whole city will find more of that loop here.
Deus Ex makes each mission a problem-solving space
Deus Ex is more compact and authored. Its locations are arranged to support experimentation: a direct route may be heavily defended, while a side path, hackable system, conversation, or piece of equipment opens another possibility. The satisfaction comes from understanding a space and noticing that your chosen skills or augmentations make a previously blocked option viable.
Because the spaces are denser, the game can give individual decisions more immediate weight. You are less often asking which activity to do next and more often asking how to reach, influence, or escape the objective in front of you. That structure is the reason Deus Ex remains a strong choice for players who value authored missions with systemic solutions over a very large map.

Stealth and hacking: which game gives you more freedom?
Cyberpunk 2077 mixes stealth into a broader action toolkit
Cyberpunk 2077 supports stealth, hacking, shooting, melee, and build experimentation in the same open-world framework. You can approach an encounter quietly, manipulate systems through hacking, or shift into direct combat when a plan fails. Hacking and environmental control are important parts of the game’s identity; TechRadar has interpreted those mechanics as evoking classic immersive simulators such as Deus Ex. That is a review interpretation, not a publisher claim.
The important distinction is emphasis. Cyberpunk 2077 lets you build for stealth and hacking, but those tools sit alongside vehicle travel, cinematic missions, open-world activities, and modern action combat. The game is comfortable with a hybrid character who changes tactics from one encounter to the next. If you want a stealth option without committing every mission to a carefully engineered infiltration, this flexibility is a strength.
Deus Ex treats alternate routes as the main event
In Deus Ex, stealth and hacking are not side modes attached to a shooting game. They are part of the central question each mission asks: what is the best way to solve this objective with the skills, augmentations, weapons, items, and information you have? A player may look for a concealed route, disable a security system, use equipment to bypass an obstacle, or talk through a situation instead of forcing a firefight.
That design makes Deus Ex the stronger choice when “stealth” means avoiding detection, reading a level, and preserving multiple options. Its first-person perspective keeps the relationship between your abilities and the physical space immediate. You are encouraged to test the environment rather than wait for a single marked solution.
Stealth verdict
Pick Deus Ex if alternate mission solutions are your top priority. Pick Cyberpunk 2077 if you want stealth and hacking combined with a much larger action-RPG, where a quiet approach is one part of a flexible build rather than the organizing principle of every mission.
Player choice, quests, and agency
Cyberpunk 2077 offers guided choice at large scale
Cyberpunk 2077 gives you many build and quest decisions, but its overall experience is shaped as a high-production cinematic RPG. Character relationships, major missions, optional work, and the wider city create a strong sense of momentum. Choices matter within that authored structure, yet the game is still guiding you through a substantial story with set-piece presentation and a broad progression arc.

This approach suits players who want decisions to support a dramatic character journey. You can customize how your mercenary fights and explores, but you also receive a directed sequence of major events and companion-focused stories. The result is less like a laboratory for mission systems and more like a large interactive crime-and-science-fiction drama.
Deus Ex makes freedom the organizing principle
Eidos-Montréal’s description of Deus Ex places player freedom at the heart of both gameplay and story. That promise appears in the way objectives can be approached: skills, augmentations, weapons, items, dialogue, stealth, and hacking all become tools for changing your route and your consequences.
If you enjoy asking “What happens if I try this?” more than selecting from a list of mission markers, Deus Ex is likely to feel more responsive. Its compact spaces give experimentation room to matter. The trade-off is that its presentation is older and its scope is narrower than Cyberpunk 2077’s open-world campaign.

Combat, builds, and augmentations
Cyberpunk 2077: broad build experimentation
Cyberpunk 2077 supports modern shooting, melee, hacking, and stealth, allowing you to combine or specialize in those approaches. Build experimentation is especially valuable because the same character can participate in varied activities across Night City. You might favor direct firepower for one situation, rely on hacking in another, or use stealth to reduce the risk before switching tactics.
The game’s vehicle play and open-world travel also affect the build experience. Your character is not confined to mission rooms; the build follows you through a city with many quests and activities. Players who enjoy seeing progression express itself across a large number of encounters will get more mileage from this structure.
Deus Ex: tools are meaningful because spaces are constrained
Deus Ex combines skills, augmentations, weapons, and items with first-person environmental problem-solving. An ability has value not only because it increases power, but because it may reveal a route or interaction that another build cannot use in the same way. This creates a tighter connection between character development and level design.

The game is therefore a better fit for players who enjoy planning around limitations. You are not simply collecting options; you are deciding which capabilities will help you handle the kinds of obstacles the mission presents. That can make each upgrade feel more consequential, while also making the older game less immediately approachable for players expecting contemporary action-RPG pacing.

Cyberpunk 2077 is character-focused and cinematic
Cyberpunk 2077 centers on a mercenary’s struggle in Night City and uses a high-production open-world structure to deliver its story. Its quests and companions are designed for players who want a strong dramatic through-line alongside exploration and combat. Phantom Liberty expands that identity with a spy-thriller storyline in Dogtown, adding a distinct setting and narrative flavor to the complete package.
Choose this game when you want the cyberpunk setting to support a long character journey, memorable set pieces, and a city that remains available between major story beats. Its modern presentation is part of the appeal, not merely a visual upgrade.
Deus Ex is conspiracy-driven and systems-focused
Deus Ex frames cyberpunk through conspiratorial missions and player-directed problem solving. The story is important, but the way you reach an objective is a major part of the narrative experience. A conversation, hack, augmentation, item, or alternate route can change your understanding of what the mission demands and how your agent operates within it.
Choose it when you want the setting to function as a network of secrets and trade-offs rather than as a huge sightseeing space. Its older presentation is a real consideration, but it is also inseparable from the compact mission design that gives the game its identity.

If you want the immersive-sim tradition with a more modern presentation than the original Deus Ex, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is the obvious alternative in this comparison. TIME’s review describes it as a 2016 cyberpunk role-playing game for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One and highlights an “incredible array of ways to play.”

Mankind Divided belongs on your shortlist when you value first-person stealth, hacking, augmentations, and multiple approaches but are concerned about the original game’s age. It does not turn the series into an open-world equivalent of Cyberpunk 2077; the relevant attraction remains dense mission design and choice. Think of it as a more contemporary entry in the same design tradition, not as a replacement for Night City’s scale, driving, or cinematic open-world structure.
Which game should you choose?
Choose Cyberpunk 2077 when these priorities sound right
- You want a current-feeling, visually rich open world rather than compact mission hubs.
- You enjoy cinematic quests and companion-focused storytelling.
- You want driving and a large city filled with quests and activities.
- You prefer to combine shooting, melee, hacking, and stealth in flexible builds.
- You want a long campaign with an expansion already included in the complete edition.
Choose Deus Ex when these priorities sound right
- You want every mission to invite stealth, hacking, dialogue, equipment choices, and alternate routes.
- You prefer systemic experimentation in dense first-person spaces.
- You value player freedom more than map size or cinematic spectacle.
- You are comfortable with an older presentation in exchange for influential immersive-sim design.
- You want your skills and augmentations to change how you solve specific objectives.
Choose Deus Ex: Mankind Divided when presentation is the deciding factor
- You want the Deus Ex approach to stealth and player choice in a more modern entry.
- You are looking for a 2016 cyberpunk RPG available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, as described by TIME.
- You want dense, flexible missions rather than an open-world campaign.
Buying the right Cyberpunk 2077 edition
Search for the product name Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition if you want the complete current package. The official product page identifies it as including the original game, all gameplay updates, Phantom Liberty, and previously released content.
Availability is not universal: verify the platform, region, price, physical or digital format, and stock on the retailer page before purchasing. Platform and edition listings can change by market. No universally current physical Deus Ex SKU is established here, so check the store serving your region rather than relying on a generic product listing.
Should you play both?
Playing both makes sense if your interest is the overlap between cyberpunk world-building and immersive-RPG systems. Each game includes hacking, stealth, augmentations, and first-person RPG ideas, but they use those ingredients differently. Cyberpunk 2077 gives you a large, cinematic city and a broader action-RPG loop. Deus Ex gives you compact missions in which environmental experimentation and alternate solutions are the point.
Play Cyberpunk 2077 first if you want immediate scale, contemporary presentation, and a long campaign. Start with Deus Ex first if you want to understand the compact immersive-sim structure before moving to a larger game that draws on some of the same ideas. If the original’s age is a barrier, Mankind Divided offers a more modern entry into that design tradition.
Final decision
Cyberpunk 2077 is better for players seeking an expansive, cinematic open-world RPG with driving, build variety, and a complete package that includes Phantom Liberty. Deus Ex is better for players who define an immersive RPG by stealth routes, hacking, equipment, augmentations, and the ability to solve a mission in unexpected ways. Neither replaces the other: the choice is between scale and systemic density, not between a cyberpunk game and a non-cyberpunk game.
