What the PS5 Pro update adds
CD PROJEKT RED announced the free update on April 8, 2026, and said PS5 Pro owners could download it that day. The studio highlighted smoother performance, higher visual fidelity, upgraded PSSR, and expanded ray-tracing features. CD PROJEKT RED’s announcement also said the game was available at no additional cost to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium members through the catalog at the time of publication; that dated statement does not establish current catalog availability.

PlayStation’s technical explanation, published April 7, described ray-traced reflections, ambient occlusion, skylight, shadows, and emissive lighting, alongside BVH8 (8-way Bounding Volume Hierarchy) support. It also details three modes, each balancing frame rate and visual features differently. PlayStation Blog’s feature breakdown presents these as specifications, not independent performance-test results.
Which graphics mode should you use?

These are the targets PlayStation Blog describes, not a guarantee of the rate in every scene. The stated 90 fps ceiling depends on a VRR display; Ray Tracing Pro’s 40 fps target requires both VRR and a high-frame-rate display. If those conditions are not met, PlayStation lists 30 fps for that mode.

Who is developing the update?
In CD PROJEKT RED’s March 2026 FY2025 earnings transcript, CEO Michał Nowakowski initially named a partner while answering a question about the update. An investor-relations correction in the transcript says Virtuos is actually developing it. The earnings transcript is the basis for that attribution.

The premise is outdated: the update was released in April 2026. The official sources cited above do not say CD PROJEKT RED rejected a PS5 Pro update in order to prioritize new projects. The studio’s October 1, 2026 AnsweRED podcast transcript discusses the creative vision for Cyberpunk 2 and identifies Gabe Amatangelo as game director on Cyberpunk 2077 after launch, Phantom Liberty, and Cyberpunk 2, and Igor Sarzyński as Cyberpunk 2 creative director. It does not connect those projects to a supposed rejection of a PS5 Pro update. The podcast transcript provides that project context.
