Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a self-contained, 10-episode anime about David Martinez, a teenager who enters Night City’s freelance mercenary underworld after a personal tragedy. Maine’s crew gives him work and mentorship; Lucy, Rebecca and the others give that crew its specialist skills and emotional stakes. Arasaka and Militech supply the corporate pressure that turns individual jobs into a city-wide power struggle.
You do not need to play Cyberpunk 2077 first. The glossary below explains the principal characters, factions and slang in spoiler-light terms, then separates story revelations under clearly marked spoiler headings.

How to read this glossary
The first sections identify who people are, what they do and where they stand. They avoid deaths, Lucy’s history, the crew’s betrayals, David’s cyberpsychosis progression and the finale. Those subjects appear only under spoiler headings later. This keeps the basic relationships clear without requiring prior knowledge of the game or of Night City’s wider setting.
Character glossary
David Martinez — the new edgerunner
David is the central young edgerunner. CD PROJEKT RED describes him as “A young edgerunner who pushes his chrome to the limit in Night City’s underworld.” In the show, “chrome” is slang for cybernetic augmentation: technology installed in or onto a person’s body. David begins outside the professional mercenary world, then chooses that life after a personal tragedy.

His importance is partly structural. He is the viewer’s route into the crew, the jobs and the corporate conflicts. He asks Maine for missions, learns the practical rules of the underworld and gradually takes on greater responsibility. His relationship with Lucy is the story’s closest emotional connection, while Maine serves as his mentor and model for surviving as an edgerunner.
Lucy — netrunner and emotional anchor
Lucy is an enigmatic netrunner. A netrunner is a hacker who works through networked technology rather than relying only on weapons or physical force. CD PROJEKT RED calls her “An enigmatic netrunner whose sharp skills are the product of her mysterious past.” In a crew built around dangerous jobs, Lucy supplies the specialist knowledge needed to access systems, gather information and navigate digital defenses.
For new viewers, her role has two dimensions: she is the team’s technical specialist and David’s closest emotional connection. The details of her past are intentionally withheld early in the series, so the spoiler section discusses them only in broad terms.

Rebecca — the shotgun-wielding gunfighter
Rebecca is the crew’s fiery, compact gunfighter. The official description says, “Fiery and short, she always lends a helping hand — or shotgun — to the cause.” Her visual design and direct attitude make her one of the easiest characters to identify when the crew is moving quickly through a job.
Rebecca is not introduced as a corporate employee or a lone hero. She is a member of the same freelance team as David, Lucy and Maine, and her value is immediate, close-range firepower backed by loyalty to the crew.
Maine — leader and mentor
Maine is the head of a “motley crew of edgerunners” and David’s mentor. He is the person David approaches for work and the one who teaches him how the team operates. Netflix’s episode summaries show David repeatedly asking Maine for missions and receiving training through the crew.
His leadership is practical rather than institutional. Maine does not represent a corporation, police department or school; he assembles people with different skills, accepts jobs and tries to keep them alive in a city where employers can discard freelancers. His mentorship gives David an entry point into the profession and establishes the crew’s internal hierarchy.

Faraday — fixer between freelancers and corporations
Faraday is a well-connected fixer who sends work to David and his crew. A fixer is an intermediary who knows clients, hears about jobs and connects those clients with capable operators. Faraday therefore sits outside the crew while still shaping what it does.
His importance grows because he connects street-level mercenaries to corporate agendas. Netflix’s episode 8 synopsis places Faraday between Arasaka and Militech. That position makes him the clearest example of how a seemingly freelance assignment can serve a much larger corporate power struggle.
Adam Smasher — corporate-aligned heavy
Adam Smasher is “Cybernetically enhanced past the point of humanity.” CD PROJEKT RED describes him as someone who lives to crush the dreams of upstart edgerunners. For a newcomer, the useful distinction is that Smasher is not another independent contractor trying to build a small crew: he represents overwhelming, corporate-aligned force.
His presence shows the extreme end of the series’ body-modification spectrum. David is a young operator pushing his augmentations; Smasher embodies what it looks like when cybernetic enhancement has eclipsed ordinary human limits.

Factions, institutions and Night City terms
Edgerunners
An edgerunner is a mercenary outlaw, also known as a cyberpunk. The word describes a way of working rather than a single organization. Edgerunners accept dangerous assignments, combine complementary skills and rely on personal loyalty instead of the protections of a formal corporation.
David’s crew is therefore best understood as a freelance team. Maine leads it, Lucy handles netrunning, Rebecca supplies direct firepower and Faraday brings paying work. The arrangement is flexible, but it also leaves the members exposed: a client can change terms, hide information or use the crew in a conflict the freelancers did not start.
Arasaka
Arasaka is the corporation most visibly tied to several of the anime’s escalating pressures. The Academy David attends is connected to Arasaka, and later episode summaries refer to sinister forces trying to lure him back there. Arasaka also becomes connected to Lucy’s dangerous past and to the final escalation.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

For first-time viewers, think of Arasaka as a corporate power that can reach from elite education to covert operations and weapon development. The series explains its role through the way it pressures characters and recruits resources, rather than requiring you to know every piece of outside game lore.

Militech is Arasaka’s corporate rival in the show’s job economy and power struggle. Netflix explicitly places Faraday between the two in episode 8 and names Militech among the forces surrounding the crew’s later missions.
The beginner-friendly comparison is simple: Arasaka and Militech are competing corporate powers, while David’s crew consists of freelancers who can be hired, manipulated or trapped by that rivalry. The crew’s assignments may look local, but the money and consequences often point back to the corporations.
The Academy
The Academy is the elite school David attends before entering the underworld. Netflix’s episode 2 and 3 summaries establish it as an important early setting. It represents a conventional route through Night City’s hierarchy, in contrast with the illegal work and improvisation of an edgerunner crew.
Understanding the Academy clarifies why David’s move into mercenary work is such a sharp change. He is not simply changing jobs; he is leaving an institutionally approved path and entering a world governed by contracts, risk and street-level loyalty.

A fixer is a connected intermediary who supplies jobs. Fixers know which clients need deniable work, which crews have the required skills and how to negotiate payment or access. Faraday is the official example in this glossary.
Fixers are not automatically members of the crews they hire. That distance matters: a fixer can pass along a job without sharing every motive of the client, and a crew can discover that a routine contract is part of a larger corporate operation only after it is underway.

Netrunners
Netrunners are hackers who operate through networked technology. They can be as essential to a job as a gunfighter, because a crew may need digital access, information or control of connected systems before its physical operators can finish the assignment. Lucy is the crew’s netrunner and the clearest example of this specialist role.
Chrome
“Chrome” is the show’s slang for cybernetic augmentation. The term can refer broadly to technological changes made to a person’s body; it is not a single device or standardized upgrade. David’s defining conflict involves how far he can push his chrome while remaining able to function as a person.

How the power structure works
- A client needs deniable work. Corporations or other powerful actors have objectives they do not want to handle through ordinary public channels.
- A fixer assembles a solution. Someone such as Faraday connects the client’s needs with a crew that has the right combination of combat, technical and logistical skills.
- The edgerunners perform the job. Maine’s team uses its own judgment and equipment, but it remains dependent on information and payment supplied from outside.
- Corporate rivalry changes the stakes. When Arasaka and Militech are involved, a freelance operation can become part of a wider contest for leverage, security or technology.
- Augmentation raises personal costs. Chrome can make an operator more capable, but David’s story asks what happens when physical enhancement and emotional strain begin to exceed human limits.
Spoilers: deaths, betrayals and the crew’s changing shape
Warning: The following section discusses broad story developments that the first half of the glossary deliberately avoids.
Deaths and the cost of freelance work
The series treats membership in an edgerunner crew as dangerous rather than permanent. People can die during jobs, and the team’s composition and sense of security change as the story advances. Those losses are not decorative surprises: they demonstrate that freelancers lack the institutional protection enjoyed by the corporations hiring or hunting them.
Lucy’s past and secret mission
Lucy’s mysterious history is tied to the larger conflict rather than being a separate character anecdote. Netflix’s episode summaries indicate that her captors learn about her secret mission. That revelation changes how her technical skills, her caution and her relationship with David should be interpreted.
David’s cyberpsychosis progression
David’s increasing use of chrome is accompanied by a progression toward cyberpsychosis, the frightening loss of stability associated with extreme augmentation in the show’s world. The important spoiler is the trajectory: the same technology that helps him survive and become more capable also places pressure on his body, judgment and relationships.

Later jobs expose betrayals among the people and institutions surrounding the crew. Faraday’s position between Arasaka and Militech becomes especially consequential, because a fixer’s apparent neutrality can conceal competing corporate demands. The finale escalates to Arasaka preparing a lethal weapon, bringing the freelance crew into direct contact with the highest level of corporate power.

Do you need to play Cyberpunk 2077 first?
No. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a standalone 10-episode anime. Netflix presents it as the story of a street kid surviving Night City by becoming an edgerunner, while CD PROJEKT RED describes it as a story about how far a person can go beyond physical and emotional limits in a city ruled by greed and disrespect for human life.
The game can provide additional context about Night City’s technology, corporations and slang, but it is not a prerequisite for following David’s crew. The anime supplies its own protagonist, setting introductions, conflicts and emotional resolution. Watching the episodes in order is enough to understand who the characters are and why the factions matter.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners MADNESS paperback manga
CD PROJEKT RED describes Cyberpunk: Edgerunners MADNESS as the first manga set in the anime’s world. It follows siblings Rebecca and Pilar before they join David’s crew, and Dark Horse Comics is identified as the paperback publisher. This is a prequel-oriented way to spend more time with two established crew members.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Mission Kit
R. Talsorian Games’ preview describes a physical mission kit containing biographies of David, Lucy, Rebecca, Maine and the rest of the crew, along with backstory, technology and details of daily life in Night City. It is aimed at people who want to use the setting for tabletop play rather than simply read a character list.
Edgerunners 2
On July 5, 2025, CD PROJEKT RED announced Edgerunners 2 as a new standalone anime made with TRIGGER for Netflix. The announcement quoted showrunner, story writer and producer Bartosz Sztybor saying, “David’s story might be over, but there’s plenty more to discover in Night City.” No release timing is established here, so treat scheduling information as subject to change.
