Yes—Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is worth watching if you want a self-contained science-fiction anime that treats spectacle, ambition and grief as parts of the same story. Its ten-episode season follows David Martinez, a street kid pulled into Night City’s mercenary underworld after a personal tragedy. Studio Trigger’s animation gives the action extraordinary velocity and color, while the writing keeps returning to what technological self-reinvention costs the people who pursue it. The result is a complete story in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, and game knowledge is useful context rather than homework.
What is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners?
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a standalone anime set in the universe of Cyberpunk 2077. Netflix describes it as a story about a street kid trying to survive in Night City, a future metropolis obsessed with technology and body modification. David Martinez becomes an edgerunner—a mercenary outlaw also called a cyberpunk—after a personal tragedy pushes him toward the criminal underworld.

The season premiered on September 13, 2022. It is designed as a finished, ten-episode story rather than an unfinished prologue or a requirement to buy the game. The setting, terminology and social pressures come from the wider Cyberpunk world, but the plot gives David and his crew their own beginning, escalation and ending.
CD PROJEKT RED produced the series with Japan’s Studio Trigger. Rafał Jaki is credited as showrunner and executive producer; Hiroyuki Imaishi directed; Hiromi Wakabayashi served as creative director; Yoh Yoshinari was character designer and animation director; and Akira Yamaoka composed the original score.
#1 Best Overall
Adam Badowski, Cyberpunk 2077 game director and CD PROJEKT RED head of studio, called it “our love letter to cyberpunk as a whole, and to stories told in animated form.” That is promotional language, not independent critical consensus, but it accurately signals the show’s ambition: this is an anime built to express the genre through movement, music and visual excess rather than simply illustrate game lore.
Is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners worth watching?
The strongest reason to watch is the way the series makes its central dilemma personal. David wants agency in a city that treats bodies as hardware and people as replaceable labor. Every apparent upgrade or opportunity also raises a question about identity, dependence and the limit of human endurance. The show does not ask you to admire Night City’s technology without considering who profits from it and who is discarded.
It is also unusually confident about tone. Trigger’s animation can be explosive, grotesque, funny and tender within the same stretch of storytelling. That intensity gives the action a physical presence, while the quieter scenes let relationships carry the consequences of David’s choices. When the balance works, the series feels like a tragedy that happens to move at the speed of a music video.

A ten-episode structure leaves little room for every corner of Night City or every member of the ensemble to receive equal development. The show favors momentum and emotional impact over exhaustive explanation. Viewers who prefer restrained science fiction, slow procedural plotting or violence kept mostly off-screen may find its presentation overwhelming. For anyone comfortable with stylized brutality and a fast, emotionally direct story, those choices are a major part of its appeal.
How the story handles David’s transformation
A personal tragedy gives the premise weight
The official franchise description says David enters the criminal underworld after a personal tragedy. That setup matters because his transformation is not presented as a simple career change. He is responding to loss, humiliation and a desire to control circumstances that previously controlled him. The mercenary life offers money, status and a sense of belonging, but it also places him inside systems designed to consume people.
The review question is whether that transformation feels earned across a short season. The answer is largely yes because the series links David’s external changes to emotional pressures. New capabilities do not erase fear or grief; they expose different versions of them. His ambition is understandable even when his decisions become dangerous, which keeps the story from reducing him to either a power fantasy hero or a cautionary example.
Ambition is treated as both hope and trap
Night City rewards people who advertise their usefulness and punishes those who cannot keep up. David’s pursuit of fame therefore has two meanings: he wants recognition, and he wants proof that his life can amount to more than the city’s categories for him. The show’s official thematic framing emphasizes physical and emotional limits, the pursuit of fame, greed and disregard for human life. Its best scenes connect those ideas instead of presenting them as separate themes.

Success brings David closer to the world he wants to enter, but it also makes the cost of staying there harder to ignore. The series understands that ambition can be sincere and destructive at the same time. It does not need a lecture about capitalism or transhumanism; the pressure is visible in the choices characters make with their bodies, loyalty and time.
The emotional story survives the genre machinery
Edgerunners has plenty of cybernetic hardware, criminal contracts and corporate menace, yet its emotional engine is interpersonal. Trust, attachment and the fear of abandonment determine how the action lands. The show is most effective when a spectacular set piece changes the meaning of a relationship rather than existing only to demonstrate a new ability.
That focus also makes the series accessible to viewers who are not invested in game mechanics. You do not need to understand every piece of technology to recognize a person trying to protect a friend, prove a point or outrun grief. The science-fiction concepts supply pressure; the characters supply meaning.
Studio Trigger’s animation: speed with a point of view
Movement communicates danger
Studio Trigger’s animation is the show’s most immediately recognizable feature. Bodies stretch, snap and accelerate in ways that would be impossible in live action, but the exaggeration is not random. Motion communicates how unstable Night City is: people are constantly enhanced, hunted, cornered or pushed beyond safe limits.
Hiroyuki Imaishi’s direction favors aggressive changes of scale and perspective. A chase can feel claustrophobic one moment and enormous the next. The staging gives major actions a readable silhouette even when the screen is crowded with effects, speed lines and mechanical detail. That clarity is essential because the series often moves quickly; you understand who is pursuing whom and what a decision costs before the next visual idea arrives.
Color and design separate emotion from exposition
The color design turns Night City into more than a futuristic backdrop. Neon, shadow and industrial surfaces create a visual language for power and vulnerability. Bright environments can feel threatening, while a darker frame may offer a rare sense of privacy. Character designs remain distinct despite the density of the setting, allowing expressions and body language to carry scenes that contain little dialogue.
Trigger’s approach also helps the show avoid looking like a filmed game cutscene. It borrows the universe’s iconography without being bound to a game camera or interface. The animation can linger on a face, distort a perspective or abstract a transition when that better serves the character’s state of mind.
Action is impressive because it has consequences
The violence is intense, but the best action sequences are not simply showcases for technical animation. They establish capability, reveal fear and alter relationships. Cybernetic power can make a character faster or stronger while making the situation less survivable. That tension keeps the spectacle connected to the story’s concern with bodily and emotional limits.
Some viewers will experience the visual assault as exhausting. That is a fair response to a series that rarely settles into a neutral register. The same excess that makes the action distinctive can make transitions feel abrupt, particularly when the plot needs to move several steps in a limited amount of time.
Music and sound: the mood behind the machinery
Akira Yamaoka’s original score gives the series a strong emotional undercurrent. Music helps the show move between street-level intimacy and overwhelming futurism without treating those modes as unrelated. Electronic textures and heavier passages support the world’s mechanical surface, while more reflective cues create space for grief and hesitation.
The score is most effective when it does not merely announce a fight. It can make a quiet decision feel ominous or allow a burst of energy to carry sadness underneath it. Sound design, effects and musical timing also reinforce the sense that technology is present everywhere, from public spaces to the characters’ own bodies.

Does the anime explain Night City without the game?
Yes. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners shares the game’s universe, but Netflix presents it as a standalone story. CD PROJEKT RED’s 2020 announcement described a new story set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, not an animated retelling of the game’s campaign.
The show introduces the social hierarchy, corporate power, body modification and mercenary culture through situations David experiences. That is a better method for television than stopping for encyclopedia entries. You learn what a concept means because it changes someone’s options. Familiarity with the game can make references and locations more rewarding, but it is not a prerequisite for following the plot or understanding the stakes.
There is a limit to this accessibility. Night City is deliberately larger than the story shown on screen, and the series sometimes trusts atmosphere to do the work that a lore explanation would do. If you want a complete map of factions, technology and history, the anime will not provide one. If you want a coherent character story in that setting, it provides enough context.
Does the ten-episode format help or hurt?
The compact season gives Edgerunners urgency. David’s choices cannot be postponed indefinitely, and the narrative does not spend large stretches resetting the status quo. Escalation feels built into the format: each success changes what the characters risk, and each setback narrows their options.
The same compression means some supporting figures function more as sharp impressions than fully explored biographies. The ensemble has distinctive personalities and visual identities, but the story’s center of gravity remains David’s transformation. Viewers who expect every crew member to receive an equal arc may find the distribution uneven.
That is a structural trade rather than a simple flaw. The series chooses a clear emotional line over a sprawling ensemble chronicle. Its ending feels like the conclusion of the story it set out to tell, not a promise that viewers must wait for another season to receive the main payoff.
Violence, tragedy and who should watch
The series contains graphic violence, body horror, criminal exploitation and sustained psychological pressure. Its brutality is stylized, but the consequences are not treated as harmless. Characters can be funny, charismatic or affectionate and still be placed in genuinely painful situations. The emotional legibility of that suffering is why the violence usually feels purposeful rather than ornamental.
Even so, the presentation is not gentle. Anyone sensitive to gore, bodily transformation or stories centered on loss should know that the show repeatedly returns to those subjects. It is a poor fit for viewers seeking light cyberpunk adventure or a consequence-free power fantasy.

How was Edgerunners received?
The available figures show substantial attention, but they should be read with their source and date attached. CD PROJEKT’s 2022 annual report stated that the series reached eighth place on Netflix’s global Top 10 non-English list during release week and appeared on that chart for four successive weeks. The same report listed a Metacritic user score of 8.9 and a 100% Rotten Tomatoes reviewer recommendation rating at the time of reporting. Those are company-reported 2022 figures, not current live aggregates independently rechecked here.
| Recognition or measure | Reported result | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix global Top 10, non-English | Eighth place in release week | Company report covering 2022 |
| Netflix chart longevity | Four successive weeks | Company report covering 2022 |
| Metacritic user score | 8.9 | Figure reported by CD PROJEKT in its 2022 annual report |

| Crunchyroll | Anime of the Year 2023 | Recognition listed in CD PROJEKT reporting |
| The Game Awards | Best Adaptation nomination in 2022 | Nomination listed in CD PROJEKT reporting |
These results explain why the series became a major conversation point, but popularity is not a substitute for analysis. The useful question for a new viewer is whether its particular combination of emotional tragedy, kinetic animation and cyberpunk world-building matches your tastes.
Do you need to play Cyberpunk 2077 first?
No. The anime is complete on its own terms. Playing the game can add context about Night City’s institutions, slang and visual landmarks, but the series establishes the information needed to understand David’s situation and the choices facing his crew. Treat the game as optional franchise context, not a prerequisite.
This also makes Edgerunners a good entry point for people who are curious about the setting but do not want to commit to a large role-playing game. Conversely, game players should not expect an animated version of their own character or campaign. The anime tells a separate story with its own cast and dramatic priorities.

Yes. The first series is structured as a finished story centered on David Martinez. Its conclusion is part of that story rather than a cliffhanger designed solely to sell another season.
A separate follow-up, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, was announced by CD PROJEKT RED on August 21, 2026, for Netflix on October 20, 2026. It is described as another standalone ten-episode story with a fresh cast. The announcement does not make it a continuation of David’s original narrative, so viewers should approach it as a new entry in the universe rather than a replacement ending or a required second chapter.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners MADNESS is a companion manga about Rebecca and Pilar before they joined David’s crew. The official franchise page describes a Dark Horse paperback as upcoming. It is optional supplementary material, not an adaptation of the anime’s first season, and its publication status should be checked before purchasing.
Final verdict
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners succeeds because it understands that cyberpunk is not only a collection of neon streets and advanced implants. It is a story about people trying to remain human while institutions, markets and their own desires turn the body into equipment. David’s journey gives that idea an emotional spine, and Studio Trigger’s direction turns every chase, transformation and moment of stillness into part of the argument.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe series is fast, visually aggressive and often painful. Its short format leaves some world-building and supporting-character development necessarily selective, but that focus helps the central tragedy reach a complete resolution. You do not need to play Cyberpunk 2077, and you do not need to wait for another season to understand what this story means. If you can accept its graphic intensity and heightened style, it is one of the more effective examples of a game-universe adaptation becoming a distinct television work.
