cychmck.dll Is Missing: Rebuild the Original Payment Setup

cychmck.dll is a legacy CyberCash Merchant Connection Kit component, not a normal Windows DLL. When Windows reports that cychmck.dll is missing or cannot load, the safest fix is to restore the complete CyberCash/MCK installation that originally used it rather than downloading a loose replacement.

What this file actually does

cychmck.dll is associated with CyberCash’s Merchant Connection Kit, or MCK. Historically, merchants installed MCK on web servers so an online storefront could communicate with CyberCash payment gateways.

That makes this a payment-integration component, not a Windows runtime. It is not known to ship with Windows, Windows Update, DirectX, .NET, or the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. A clean modern Windows installation would not normally contain it.

Historical file inventories describe the file as follows:

Square Terminal - Credit Card Machine to Accept All Payments | Mobile POS
  • With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
  • Process chip cards in just two seconds.
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
  • Description: cychmck Module
  • Product: Merchant Connection Kit
  • Publisher: CyberCash, Inc.
  • Reported version: 2.1.0.1
  • Reported size: 336,224 bytes
  • Reported architecture: Win32/32-bit

The version and size are third-party inventory reports, not details confirmed against a surviving official CyberCash installer. Treat them as clues, not as a signature for deciding whether a downloaded copy is genuine.

You are most likely to encounter this file on an old Windows NT or Windows 2000-era server, a migrated merchant system, or a legacy application containing MCK support. It is not normally associated with modern games or ordinary desktop software.

cychmck.dll causes by symptom

Symptom Most likely cause Correct direction
“The program can’t start because cychmck.dll is missing” MCK or its parent application was removed, quarantined, or incompletely installed Restore or reinstall the original application and MCK integration
“The file cychmck.dll is missing or corrupted” Damaged file, wrong replacement, or incomplete installation Use the original installer or a trusted server backup
“Error loading cychmck.dll. The specified module could not be found” The DLL itself or one of its dependent libraries is missing Check the application directory and logs before replacing anything
“No POP record returned for payment request” Historical MCK registration or configuration failure Verify the original MCK path, registration, certificates, and web-server configuration
The error appears after antivirus activity The DLL may have been quarantined Review quarantine, verify provenance, then scan the system
The error appears on a 64-bit system A 32-bit legacy component may be running in an unsupported environment Use the application’s original 32-bit compatibility path or isolate the old server
The error appears in unrelated modern software A startup item, service, migration artifact, or unwanted program may be calling it Identify the calling executable before attempting repair

Fix 1: Identify the application that is calling the DLL

Do this before downloading anything. The error dialog may identify the program, service, or web server that requested cychmck.dll.

Check the error context

  1. Note whether the message appears when starting a desktop program, Windows service, scheduled task, or web server.
  2. Record the executable name shown in the title bar or error message.
  3. Check whether the problem began after:
  4. uninstalling old software
  5. restoring a server backup
  6. moving an application to another computer
  7. running antivirus cleanup
  8. changing the web-server configuration
  9. upgrading from an older Windows installation
  10. Open Settings and select Apps.
  11. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  12. Search for CyberCash, Merchant Connection Kit, or the name of the merchant application.
  13. If the program is present, select its menu and choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what it offers.

Do not uninstall the application yet if it contains payment configuration, certificates, scripts, or transaction records. Preserve a backup first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If no CyberCash-related software is installed, inspect the calling process instead. A modern program should not normally request this DLL. Check Task Manager, Startup apps, Services, and Task Scheduler for an old integration or an unfamiliar executable.

Fix 2: Search for the original DLL on the computer

The file may still exist in the original MCK directory while the application is looking in the wrong location.

Open Command Prompt as an administrator:

  1. Press Start.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
where /r C: cychmck.dll

If that produces no result, run:

dir /s /b C:cychmck.dll

You can also search another drive by replacing C: with the correct drive letter.

A historical MCK installation used directories resembling:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
C:mck-3.2.0.3-nt

That is an example of an old installation path, not a current package that should be downloaded.

  • Get set up quickly with no long-term commitments. Download the Square Point of Sale app for free, create an account, and start taking payments anywhere.
  • Run your business all in one place with the free Square Point of Sale app. Track your sales, manage inventory, accept tips, send receipts digitally, and more.
  • Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.

If the search finds the DLL:

  1. Record its complete path.
  2. Right-click the file and select Properties.
  3. Check the Details tab for its description and publisher fields.
  4. Check the Digital Signatures tab if it exists.
  5. Compare the directory with the application’s configuration and installation records.
  6. Do not move the file yet.

A copy inside the original MCK directory is more credible than an unexplained copy in C:WindowsSystem32. The application may be configured to load the file from its own directory, from a web-server integration folder, or through a registered component.

If the DLL exists but Windows still says the specified module cannot be found, a dependency may be missing. Windows can display that message when the requested DLL is present but one of the libraries it needs is absent.

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the complete CyberCash integration

This is the most likely successful fix when the error comes from a known CyberCash or merchant web application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the original source in this order:

  1. The original MCK installation media.
  2. A verified server backup.
  3. A deployment image from the same working system.
  4. The original merchant application installer.
  5. An archived internal software repository with known provenance.

Before changing the server:

  1. Stop the affected application or web service.
  2. Back up the application directory.
  3. Back up MCK configuration files.
  4. Preserve certificates, scripts, payment settings, and web-server configuration.
  5. Record the current Windows and web-server versions.
  6. Export relevant application logs.

Then run the installer:

  1. Locate the original installer.
  2. Right-click it and select Properties.
  3. If an Unblock checkbox appears on the General tab, review it before continuing.
  4. Right-click the installer again.
  5. Select Run as administrator.
  6. Choose Repair if the installer provides that option.
  7. Otherwise, install the same MCK integration into its original application directory.
  8. Restore configuration only from the known-good backup.
  9. Restart the related web service or application.
  10. Reproduce the original error with a safe test transaction or non-production test path.

A successful repair should restore the original directory structure and allow the parent application to start without requesting a standalone DLL. For a payment system, do not assume that a successful launch proves the integration is safe. Confirm that configuration, certificates, logging, and payment processing still behave correctly in an approved test environment.

CyberCash filed for bankruptcy, and its software assets were sold to First Data. A current official MCK redistributable may therefore be difficult or impossible to obtain. Do not treat an ordinary DLL archive as an official replacement.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything

Antivirus software may have removed or quarantined the file, but a quarantine event is not proof that the file was harmless.

To check Microsoft Defender:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security.
  3. Select Windows Security.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Choose Protection history.
  6. Review detections near the time the error started.
  7. Open any relevant entry and record the detected path and action.

On Windows 10, the same controls are under Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore the file only when all of these are true:

  • The original path is known.
  • The file came from the original MCK installation or a trusted backup.
  • The publisher and file properties are consistent with the installation.
  • Your administrator has reviewed the detection.
  • A full malware scan has been completed.

If the file came from an unknown download site, do not restore it merely because the filename matches. Delete or quarantine it and obtain the complete application from a trusted original source.

Fix 5: Use regsvr32 only for the historical MCK registration case

regsvr32 is not a universal repair command. It works only when the DLL provides the registration entry point expected by the tool, such as DllRegisterServer.

  • Bi-directional swipe reading, superior reading of high jitter, scratched, and worn magstripe cards, reliable for over 1,000,000 card swipes
  • Configuration software makes configuration changes easy, works with: Windows OS and Mac OS

Historical CyberCash MCK instructions used a command resembling:

regsvr32 C:pathtoasp-apicychmckcychmck.dll

Use this only when all of the following apply:

  • The original DLL is already present.
  • The application documentation or administrator confirms that MCK registration is required.
  • The file is from the original installation.
  • The application is an old ASP, CGI, or web-server integration.
  • You know the actual path to the file.

On a 32-bit MCK component running under 64-bit Windows, the correct regsvr32 executable may depend on which process loads the component. Do not guess between the 32-bit and 64-bit tools. Follow the original application’s architecture and deployment documentation.

To attempt registration:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run the command with the actual path:
regsvr32 "C:pathtoasp-apicychmckcychmck.dll"
  1. Read the result dialog.
  2. Restart the related web server.
  3. Check the application log and reproduce the error.

A successful registration message means only that registration completed. It does not prove that dependencies, certificates, payment settings, or gateway connectivity are correct.

If Windows reports that the module could not be loaded, confirm the path first. If the path is correct, investigate missing dependencies and architecture. Do not download replacement dependencies from unrelated DLL sites.

Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

Historical evidence identifies cychmck.dll as a Win32/32-bit component. That is important because a 32-bit DLL cannot be made compatible by downloading an x64 file.

Do not copy the DLL into both locations:

  • C:WindowsSystem32
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64

Despite the confusing names, modern 64-bit Windows uses System32 for 64-bit system components and SysWOW64 for 32-bit system components. Application installers determine where application files belong, and a third-party MCK DLL does not normally belong in either directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Instead:

  1. Identify whether the parent application is 32-bit.
  2. Identify whether the web server or service loads 32-bit extensions.
  3. Check the original MCK installation instructions.
  4. Keep the DLL in the application’s intended directory.
  5. Use an isolated legacy system or virtualized environment if the application cannot run safely on the current operating system.

A claim that a random download is an x64 build should not be trusted without an authentic installer and a verified binary. Copying files between System32 and SysWOW64 can create a second problem while hiding the original configuration error.

Fix 7: Investigate missing dependencies

The message “specified module could not be found” may refer to a dependency rather than cychmck.dll itself.

Use this sequence:

  1. Confirm that cychmck.dll exists in the original MCK directory.
  2. Check the application and web-server logs.
  3. Re-run the original installer’s repair option.
  4. Verify that the application’s other native libraries are present.
  5. Confirm that the required 32-bit runtime environment matches the original application.
  6. Have an administrator inspect the binary’s dependency chain using an approved analysis tool.

Do not install a collection of similarly named DLLs from the internet. A dependency copied from another system may be the wrong version or architecture and could cause payment-processing failures.

Visual C++ Redistributables are not a known source of cychmck.dll. Microsoft’s current redistributable guidance is available through the Visual C++ Redistributable documentation.

Fix 8: Repair Windows components only when Windows has broader problems

Because cychmck.dll is a third-party application file, Windows integrity tools will not recreate it. They are appropriate when Windows itself is also showing corruption, failed servicing, or unrelated missing system components.

First repair the component store:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the command to finish.
  2. Restart Windows.

Then run System File Checker:

sfc /scannow

Restart again and test the parent application.

Microsoft documents DISM repair behavior in its Windows image repair documentation and SFC in its System File Checker documentation.

Repeating SFC and DISM will not restore a CyberCash file that Windows never owned. If you are manually hunting through repair logs and repeating commands without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems; its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair requires the full version. Reinstalling the CyberCash integration remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that application.

Fix 9: Check Windows Features only when the parent application requires them

Windows Features will not install MCK, but an old application may require a particular web-server or compatibility component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To review optional features:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
optionalfeatures
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Review features required by the original application documentation.
  3. Select only documented requirements.
  4. Select OK.
  5. Restart if Windows requests it.

Do not enable random legacy features to make an unknown DLL load. If the application requires IIS, ASP, or another server role, configure that role according to the original deployment documentation and keep the server isolated from unnecessary exposure.

Fix 10: Update drivers only when diagnostics identify a driver problem

A graphics, storage, chipset, or printer driver is not a normal cause of a missing CyberCash application DLL. Device Manager is useful only if the parent application fails alongside a hardware or driver error.

To inspect devices:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories with a warning icon.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Read the Device status message on the General tab.
  7. Open the Driver tab.
  8. Use Update Driver only with a driver from the hardware vendor or Windows Update.
  9. Restart Windows and test again.

If you are manually checking dozens of devices and guessing which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show reported driver issues; the free scan identifies findings, while driver installation requires the full version. A driver update will not replace cychmck.dll, so restore the original MCK application if that is the actual source of the error.

Why downloading cychmck.dll is unsafe

A standalone DLL download can fail in several ways:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • It may contain malware.
  • It may be the wrong version.
  • It may be built for the wrong architecture.
  • Its publisher may be unverifiable.
  • It may lack the dependencies required by the original application.
  • It may load but produce payment or configuration errors.
  • It may overwrite a legitimate file and make later investigation harder.

The safe sources are the original CyberCash/MCK installation media, a verified backup, the parent application’s authentic installer, or an internal deployment image from a known-working system. There is no evidence that Microsoft distributes this file.

Never place an unexplained copy in System32 or SysWOW64. Never register a random replacement with regsvr32.

When to stop repairing MCK

MCK is obsolete payment-server software. If the original installer, configuration, and trusted binary cannot be recovered, repeated DLL replacement is not a reliable operating plan.

Preserve:

  • application and web-server logs
  • configuration files
  • certificates and keys
  • deployment records
  • the original server image
  • transaction and audit data required by your organization

Then isolate the legacy system and migrate to a supported payment integration. Test the replacement separately before disabling the old system, and involve the payment provider or application owner where credentials, certificates, and transaction integrity are involved.

FAQ

Is cychmck.dll part of Windows?

No evidence supports that. It is associated with CyberCash Merchant Connection Kit and should not normally be present on a clean modern Windows installation.

Is cychmck.dll a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime?

No. Visual C++ Redistributables do not supply this file. Install a Microsoft runtime only if the original application documents that dependency.

Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?

Historical evidence identifies it as Win32/32-bit, but an authentic binary is required for definitive verification. An alleged x64 download should not be trusted merely because a file listing labels it that way.

Should I copy it to System32?

Generally, no. Keep it in the original MCK or application directory and let the installer and application determine how it is loaded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does regsvr32 fix the error?

Only in the historical MCK registration scenario, when the original DLL is present and exposes the required registration entry point. It is not a universal missing-DLL repair command.

Can SFC restore it?

No. SFC repairs protected Windows components. It does not recreate a third-party CyberCash DLL.

Why does the error say the specified module cannot be found when the file exists?

A dependent library may be missing, the application may be using the wrong architecture, or the configured path may be wrong. Check the original installation and application logs before replacing files.

Is the filename itself proof of malware?

No. The filename alone cannot establish whether a file is safe. Verify its path, provenance, publisher information, and relationship to the original MCK installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the safest final fix?

Restore or reinstall the complete CyberCash Merchant Connection Kit integration from a trusted original source. If that source no longer exists, preserve the legacy environment and migrate to a supported payment system rather than downloading an isolated DLL.
