If d3dcompiler_33.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the affected game or 3D application is usually missing an optional legacy DirectX component. The safest repair is to run the program’s bundled DirectX installer, then install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime if necessary.
Before changing Windows, record:
- Which game or application displays the error.
- Whether it happens at launch, during installation, or after an update.
- The complete error text, including any code such as
0xc000007B. - Whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the game came from Steam, Epic Games Launcher, another launcher, or a standalone installer.
- Whether antivirus recently quarantined a file.
- Whether other games or applications have similar problems.
These details separate a missing game file from a damaged Windows component or an architecture mismatch.

What d3dcompiler_33.dll is
d3dcompiler_33.dll belongs to the legacy Direct3D and HLSL shader-compiler components used by older games and 3D applications. Microsoft lists the D3DCompiler_33.dll through D3DCompiler_43.dll family among legacy DirectX SDK components in its framework package documentation.
The D3DCompiler family provides APIs that compile High-Level Shader Language code into shader bytecode for Direct3D applications. It is separate from the core Direct3D runtime that Windows supplies.

This distinction explains why a computer can have DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 and still be missing d3dcompiler_33.dll. Modern Windows includes newer DirectX components, but it does not automatically install every optional, side-by-side library from older DirectX SDK releases. Microsoft distinguishes these legacy components from D3DCompiler_47.dll, which is included with Windows 10.
The known 32-bit file entry is version 9.18.904.15 and approximately 1.07 MB. That metadata should not be used to identify every historical copy, because games and installers may contain different builds or architectures.
What the error may look like
The wording depends on Windows and on the application’s loader. Common messages include:
The program can't start because d3dcompiler_33.dll is missing from your computer.
Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
The code execution cannot proceed because d3dcompiler_33.dll was not found.
Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.
There was a problem starting d3dcompiler_33.dll.
The specified module could not be found.
d3dcompiler_33.dll is either not designed to run on Windows
or it contains an error.
The phrase “specified module could not be found” does not always mean that the named DLL is absent. Windows may have found d3dcompiler_33.dll but failed to load one of its dependencies.
The “not designed to run on Windows” message commonly corresponds to STATUS_INVALID_IMAGE_FORMAT, often shown as 0xC000007B. It can result from a corrupt file, a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch, or an invalid dependent module. Microsoft documents this status in its NTSTATUS reference.
Fix 1: Run the game’s bundled DirectX setup
This is the fastest and usually the most appropriate fix for an older game. Many legitimate game installers include the exact legacy DirectX components the title expects.
Find the installer
- Close the game and its launcher.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the game’s installation folder.
- Look for a folder named
Redist,DirectX,_CommonRedist,Support, orInstallers. - Search within the game folder for:
text
DXSETUP.exe
- Right-click
DXSETUP.exe. - Select Run as administrator.
- Accept the Microsoft DirectX license.
- Allow the setup to complete.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Launch the game again.
The installer may complete without visibly replacing a particular DLL. Microsoft recommends allowing DirectSetup to check and install optional components instead of manually checking whether one filename happens to exist. Its DirectX installation guidance explains the difference between core DirectX files and optional legacy components.

If the setup reports that no installation is needed
That result does not prove the game is repaired. Test the game again. If the same error appears:
- Close the game.
- Temporarily note whether antivirus reports a new quarantine event.
- Use the launcher’s file verification function.
- If verification finds no problem, continue with the official Microsoft runtime installation below.
- Do not delete DirectX files from
System32orSysWOW64to force the installer to run.
Fix 2: Install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime
The official Microsoft runtime supplies optional legacy DirectX components, including the HLSL Compiler and related libraries. It does not upgrade the core DirectX version built into Windows.
Microsoft provides two relevant packages:
| Package | Use it when |
|---|---|
DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, dxwebsetup.exe |
The computer has working internet access and the small installer runs normally |
DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010), directx_Jun2010_redist.exe |
The web installer fails, the computer is offline, or you need a complete local installer |
Both Microsoft Download Center entries list version 9.29.1974.1.
Use the web installer
- Open Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer.
- Download
dxwebsetup.exe. - Open the downloaded file.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Read and accept the license.
- Decline optional toolbar or unrelated offers if shown.
- Let the installer detect missing legacy components.
- Allow it to download and install the components.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the affected game or application.
This installer requires network access. It may fail because of blocked connections, damaged temporary files, permissions, or installer compatibility problems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse the full offline package
If the web installer reports an internal error or does not complete, use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010).
- Download
directx_Jun2010_redist.exefrom Microsoft. - Save it to a known folder such as Downloads.
- Right-click the file and select Run as administrator.
- When asked for an extraction location, create or select an empty folder.
- Open that extraction folder.
- Locate
DXSETUP.exe. - Right-click
DXSETUP.exeand select Run as administrator. - Complete the DirectX setup.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program.
The offline package is not a standalone copy of d3dcompiler_33.dll. It is a redistributable package that lets DirectSetup install the required optional components correctly.

Do not download the DLL from a random DLL website. Those files may contain malware, may be the wrong architecture, may have incompatible metadata, or may leave the actual missing dependency and damaged game installation untouched. Microsoft’s Download Center and the game’s own DXSETUP.exe are the safe sources.
Why DirectX 12 does not guarantee this DLL
The DirectX version shown by dxdiag describes the modern DirectX environment and does not prove that every legacy optional SDK component is installed.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Microsoft’s setup model keeps many older runtime components side by side so that older applications can continue requesting the exact library version they were built to use. An application linked against D3DCompiler_33.dll asks for that filename. The presence of D3DCompiler_47.dll does not guarantee compatibility and is not a drop-in rename.
Installing the June 2010 runtime does not replace or downgrade DirectX 12. It adds optional legacy components used by older applications.
Check the 32-bit and 64-bit architecture
Architecture mismatches are a common reason for 0xc000007B and “not designed to run on Windows” errors.
A 32-bit game running on 64-bit Windows needs the 32-bit DirectX component. A native 64-bit application needs the 64-bit component. The operating system’s architecture does not tell you the architecture of every application installed on it.
On 64-bit Windows:
C:\Windows\System32is normally the 64-bit system directory.C:\Windows\SysWOW64is normally the 32-bit system directory.
The names are counterintuitive, so do not use the folder name to guess which architecture is correct. Microsoft explains this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.
The DirectX installer should select and place the required components automatically. Do not manually copy an x64 DLL beside a 32-bit game or copy a 32-bit DLL into System32.
If the program is installed in its own folder, it may use an application-local runtime copy instead of the system copy. That is another reason to run the game’s bundled DirectX setup or repair the game installation rather than copying an isolated file.
Fix 3: Verify or repair the game installation
If the game’s own files are incomplete, reinstalling the DirectX runtime may not be enough. A canceled update, damaged storage, moved installation folder, or incomplete secondary installer can remove application-local runtime files.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the check to finish.
- Start the game again.
- If Steam restores files, test the game before making further system changes.
Steam may also run a secondary DirectX installer when the game launches. Allow that installer to complete.
Epic Games Launcher
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the affected game.
- Select the three dots beside the game.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for verification to finish.
- Launch the game again.
Other launchers or standalone games
Look for a Repair, Verify, Scan, or Validate command in the launcher. If the program came from physical media or a standalone installer, rerun the installer and choose Repair when available.
If verification cannot restore the missing files, uninstall and reinstall the affected game from its legitimate installer. Back up saved games and configuration files first if the title stores them inside its installation folder.

Security software can remove a file from an old game folder, a temporary installer directory, or an application package. Quarantine is possible, but do not restore a file solely because the game reports it missing.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection associated with the game directory,
DXSETUP.exe, or the missing DLL. - Check the complete path, detection name, and source.
- If the file came from Microsoft’s DirectX installer or the game’s legitimate installation, follow your organization’s security policy before restoring it.
- If it was removed rather than quarantined, reinstall the runtime or verify the game files.
- Run another scan before launching the program.
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can put the computer at risk. Use the Protection History guidance when evaluating a detection.
If the DLL disappears again immediately after installation, do not keep copying it back. Determine which security product is removing it and investigate the detection.
Fix 5: Determine whether the named DLL is only a symptom
The message “specified module could not be found” can mean a dependency of d3dcompiler_33.dll is missing. The visible filename is not always the complete diagnosis.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the following:
- Confirm which executable produces the message.
- Check whether the error appears only for one game.
- Look for another copy of
d3dcompiler_33.dllbeside the game executable. - Verify the game files.
- Check Windows Security protection history.
- Confirm that the affected program is using the intended installation folder.
- Look for a second error naming
MSVCP*.dll,VCRUNTIME*.dll, or a .NET assembly. - Check whether the installation folder has restrictive permissions.
- Test the program after a clean reinstall of its official runtime.
Do not replace every DLL mentioned in an error with files from the internet. The loader may be reporting the first component it could not process, while the underlying cause is an incompatible dependent module.
Fix 6: Respond to 0xc000007B or “not designed to run”
Treat this error as an architecture or invalid-image problem rather than automatically assuming that d3dcompiler_33.dll is corrupt.
Use this order:
- Run the game’s bundled
DXSETUP.exe. - Install the Microsoft June 2010 DirectX runtime.
- Verify the game files.
- Check whether the game is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Check whether a manually placed DLL exists beside the executable.
- Remove only files that you knowingly added to the game folder, and reinstall the game runtime through its official installer.
- Check for additional Visual C++ runtime errors.
- Run system component repair if multiple programs are failing.
A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot use a 32-bit DLL as its substitute. Microsoft documents the compatibility rules in Running 32-bit Applications.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
SFC and DISM are appropriate when several Windows components are damaged, several unrelated applications fail, or the DirectX installer itself cannot complete. They are not the first-line replacement for a missing optional DirectX SDK DLL.
Recommended Free Tools
Run DISM first, then SFC:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
bat
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to reach completion. It can take time and may appear paused.
- After DISM finishes, run:
bat
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC in its System File Checker instructions.
If Windows Update is damaged and DISM needs a separate repair source, Microsoft documents this form:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:\RepairSource\Windows /LimitAccess
Replace the example repair-source path only with a valid Windows repair source. Do not invent a path and do not point DISM at an arbitrary folder.
Repeating SFC and DISM by hand can leave you guessing which component changed or whether the scan found anything actionable. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying issue and its full version performs the repair, but it is optional, and a game-specific missing file still requires repairing or reinstalling that game.
If SFC and DISM complete successfully but only one game still reports d3dcompiler_33.dll, return to the game’s installer and file verification steps.

Fix 8: Install pending Windows updates, but do not expect them to provide the DLL
Windows Update can repair related operating system components and deliver drivers, but Microsoft states that Windows Update and service packs do not provide the optional legacy DirectX components.
To check for updates:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows when requested.
- Check for updates again if Windows reports that a restart is required.
- Test the affected program.
Use the Microsoft Windows Update instructions for the current Windows interface.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If the only problem is a missing d3dcompiler_33.dll, install the official DirectX runtime separately.
Fix 9: Update the graphics driver only when there are additional symptoms
A graphics driver is not the normal source of d3dcompiler_33.dll. Reinstalling a GPU driver will not normally supply this legacy compiler library.
Consider a driver update when:
dxdiagreports display-driver problems.- The application launches after the DLL repair but crashes during rendering.
- The screen shows corruption, flickering, or device-reset errors.
- Other 3D applications fail with graphics-related messages.
- The problem began immediately after a driver change.
To check through Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and driver date.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
For a clean vendor installation, use the graphics adapter manufacturer’s official support process. Microsoft’s DxDiag guidance explains how to collect display and DirectX information.
Manually checking Device Manager and matching driver packages can mean hunting versions and guessing which of several drivers is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, while its full version installs updates; it is optional and does not replace the legacy DirectX runtime when the game itself is missing files.

Fix 10: Check Visual C++ and .NET only when their errors are also present
Visual C++ and .NET do not provide d3dcompiler_33.dll. Repair them only when the application also reports related files or assemblies.
Examples include:
MSVCP*.dllVCRUNTIME*.dll- A named
.NETassembly - A message that the required .NET Framework feature is disabled
To inspect Windows Features:
- Press
Win + R. - Type:

optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the Windows Features list.
- Enable a .NET feature only when the application’s documentation or error specifically requires it.
- Select OK.
- Allow Windows to apply the change.
- Restart if requested.
There is no Windows Features checkbox that installs d3dcompiler_33.dll. Do not enable unrelated legacy features as a substitute for the DirectX runtime.
If a Visual C++ error is present, use the application’s official installer or Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ runtime package. Keep that repair separate from the DirectX repair so you can identify which change resolved the problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not run regsvr32 for this DLL
regsvr32 is used to register COM and ActiveX DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. d3dcompiler_33.dll is a runtime library loaded by the application, not a DLL that normally requires Registry registration.
Do not use:
regsvr32 d3dcompiler_33.dll
It may produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer entry point was not found,” and it will not install the missing DirectX component. Microsoft explains the intended use of the command in its Regsvr32 documentation.
Do not manually copy a random DLL
Manual copying is appropriate for controlled application deployment by a developer, not as a general end-user repair method.
Avoid these actions:
- Downloading
d3dcompiler_33.dllfrom an unofficial DLL website. - Copying a random DLL into
System32. - Copying a 64-bit file beside a 32-bit game.
- Overwriting a game’s bundled runtime with a file from another game.
- Replacing
D3DCompiler_47.dllwith a renamed copy. - Deleting groups of DirectX files before reinstalling them.
- Copying files into Windows folders without verifying their source and architecture.
Use DirectSetup or the game launcher’s repair process. Microsoft’s setup guidance recommends using the DirectX redistributable files for released runtime installation rather than casually copying individual released DLLs.

- Record the affected program’s exact name and version.
- Record where it was installed.
- Record whether it came from a launcher or standalone installer.
- Copy the complete error message.
- Record whether the bundled

- Check whether antivirus quarantined the DLL.
- Note whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Include any Visual C++, .NET, or graphics-driver errors shown alongside it.
This information helps determine whether the problem is:
- A missing legacy DirectX installation.
- A damaged game installation.
- A quarantined application file.
- A 32-bit/64-bit mismatch.
- A missing dependency.
- Wider Windows component corruption.
- A graphics problem unrelated to the DLL.
The core DirectX version shown by DxDiag does not prove that legacy optional components are installed. Use the Microsoft DxDiag instructions when collecting the report.
Frequently asked questions
Is d3dcompiler_33.dll a Windows system file?
It is a Microsoft Direct3D/HLSL compiler component, but it is not part of the core DirectX files that modern Windows installs by default. It belongs to optional legacy DirectX components that may be installed by a game or by Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime.
Why is it missing when DirectX 12 is installed?
DirectX 12 does not automatically include every older DirectX SDK library. Legacy components are installed side by side so older applications can request the exact versions they were built to use.
Which Microsoft package should I install?
Start with the game’s bundled DXSETUP.exe. If it is missing or fails, use the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer. If the web installer fails, use the full DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) package and run its extracted DXSETUP.exe.
Should I install the x86 or x64 version?
A 32-bit game needs the 32-bit component, even on 64-bit Windows. A native 64-bit program needs the 64-bit component. Running the official DirectX setup is safer than choosing and copying a file manually.
Should the DLL be in System32 or SysWOW64?
On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Some applications use a copy beside their executable. Do not manually move the DLL between these folders.
Will reinstalling my graphics driver fix it?
Usually not. The graphics driver does not normally provide d3dcompiler_33.dll. Update the driver when there are additional display or rendering problems, not as the first response to this missing-runtime message.
Will Visual C++ or .NET repair it?
Not normally. They do not provide this DirectX compiler DLL. Repair them only if the application also reports a Visual C++ runtime file or a .NET assembly problem.
Should I use regsvr32?
No. This runtime DLL does not normally require COM registration. Install it through DirectSetup or repair the affected application instead.
What if the file exists but the application still fails?
The file may have the wrong architecture, may be corrupt, or may depend on another missing module. Verify the game files, check for antivirus quarantine, remove unauthorized application-local copies, and inspect the exact error and 0xc000007B status if shown.
Should I use SFC and DISM first?
No, unless multiple Windows components or applications are failing, or the DirectX installer cannot complete. For a single game missing this optional component, run the game’s DirectX setup or verify the game files first.
When should I reinstall the game?
Reinstall the affected game when its bundled DirectX installer is missing, verification cannot restore files, the installation was interrupted, or the DLL is repeatedly removed from the game directory. If the problem is application-local, reinstalling the program is the definitive repair.
