If d3dx10_35.dll is missing, install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX End-User Runtime and run its DXSETUP.exe installer. d3dx10_35.dll is a genuine Microsoft Direct3D utility library used by older games and graphics applications, but it is not guaranteed to be installed with Windows 10, Windows 11, DirectX 11, or DirectX 12.
The safest repair is the official DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) offline package. It installs the older side-by-side DirectX components that modern Windows versions do not necessarily include.

The _35 suffix is important. It identifies one side-by-side library revision. It does not mean that the computer has, or needs, a product called DirectX 10.35.
Microsoft documents D3DX libraries as optional, versioned components separate from the Direct3D core included with Windows. The D3DX10 family includes several numbered files, including d3dx10_33.dll through d3dx10_43.dll. Microsoft also describes these older utility libraries as legacy components in its D3DX10 framework package documentation.
This file is not:
- A Visual C++ runtime file
- A .NET Framework file
- A graphics-card driver file
- A normal Windows core system component
- A COM or ActiveX library that should be registered with
regsvr32
The program that installed the file may keep a copy beside its executable, or the Microsoft DirectX setup program may place the appropriate runtime component in the relevant Windows directory. The exact location depends on the application, Windows architecture, and installation method.

Why DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 does not fix it
Windows includes the modern Direct3D runtime used by current applications. That does not mean every optional D3DX library from older DirectX SDK releases is present.
A computer can report DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 in dxdiag and still lack d3dx10_35.dll. The DirectX version shown by dxdiag describes the modern Windows graphics stack. It does not prove that every optional, side-by-side D3DX component has been installed.
Windows Update and ordinary Windows service packs do not provide every historical D3DX version. Microsoft’s DirectX installation guidance for game developers explains the distinction between the DirectX components built into Windows and optional legacy components installed by an application or redistributable package.
Fix 1: Install the official June 2010 DirectX runtime
This is the most likely fix for a clean “missing,” “not found,” or “could not be loaded” message.
The offline package is preferable when repairing an older game because it contains the June 2010 and earlier side-by-side DirectX components, including D3DX libraries. It does not replace the modern DirectX version built into Windows.
Download and extract the package
-
Open Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) page.
-
Download
directx_Jun2010_redist.exe. -
When prompted for an extraction location, create or select an empty folder. For example:
text
C:\Temp\DirectX-Jun2010
- Allow the package to extract its files.
The downloaded .exe is a self-extracting archive. It is not the final installation step.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRun DXSETUP.exe
-
Open the folder where the package was extracted.
-
Find
DXSETUP.exe. -
Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
-
Accept the license terms.
-
Let setup complete.
-
Restart Windows, or at minimum fully close and relaunch the affected game or application.
The important distinction is that directx_Jun2010_redist.exe extracts the installer, while DXSETUP.exe installs the actual optional DirectX components. Microsoft identifies DXSETUP.exe as the installer for these legacy components in its DirectX setup documentation.
After setup completes, launch the program again. If the original message specifically named d3dx10_35.dll, a successful repair usually allows the program to move past that particular loader error. It may still report another missing prerequisite if the game needs additional legacy components.
For managed deployments, Microsoft documents this silent form:
DXSETUP.exe /silent
Ordinary users normally do not need the silent command.
Use the web installer when appropriate
Microsoft also provides the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, downloaded as dxwebsetup.exe.
The web installer downloads the required legacy components during setup. It can be useful when the computer has a reliable internet connection and you want the installer to determine which components are required.
The offline package is usually more convenient for troubleshooting because it contains the legacy component set locally and can be reused without downloading each component during setup. Do not assume that installing the modern DirectX version shown by Windows will provide this file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Microsoft’s formal download information lists legacy Windows versions in the package requirements. Avoid making an unconditional compatibility promise for every current Windows 10 or Windows 11 configuration. If setup fails on a particular machine, use the diagnostic steps later in this guide.
Fix 2: Run the game’s own DirectX installer
Many older games include the correct prerequisite files in their installation folder. This is especially common after a reinstall, migration to another computer, or restoration from a backup.
Look in the game folder for directories named:
Redist_CommonRedistDirectXPrerequisitesSupportInstallers
Search inside those folders for:
DXSETUP.exe
If you find it:
-
Close the game and launcher.
-
Right-click the game’s
DXSETUP.exe. -
Select Run as administrator.
-
Complete the installer.
-
Restart the game.
A vendor-supplied installer is preferable to manually copying a DLL because it can install the complete set of matching legacy components and handle the application’s intended deployment method.
If the game launcher offers a prerequisite repair option, use that option before attempting manual file changes. Some launchers reinstall DirectX automatically during the first launch, while others place the installer in the game directory without running it again.

Fix 3: Verify or repair the game files
If d3dx10_35.dll worked previously and the problem began after an update, failed patch, disk cleanup, launcher crash, or interrupted installation, the game’s local files may be damaged or incomplete.

-
Select Verify integrity of game files.
-
Wait for Steam to complete the scan.
-
Launch the game again.
Steam also notes that games may include secondary installers for DirectX, Visual C++, PhysX, and other prerequisites inside the installation folder. Verification may restore those files, but you may still need to run the included DXSETUP.exe.

GOG and other launchers
Open the game’s settings or management menu and look for Verify, Repair, or a similar file-checking command. If the launcher has a bundled DirectX prerequisite installer, run that installer after verification.
If verification does not restore the launch, uninstall and reinstall the game from its original launcher. When the file belongs to a particular game, reinstalling that game remains the most complete way to restore its application files and prerequisites.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix 4: Check whether the application needs x86 or x64
A large number of older Windows games are 32-bit even when they run on 64-bit Windows. That means they need the x86 version of the legacy DirectX component.
Do not assume that every 64-bit Windows installation needs only the x64 component.
The general rule is:
- A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit, or x86, runtime.
- A native 64-bit application needs the x64 runtime.
- A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL.
- A 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system binaries, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system binaries. The names are confusing, but this is the expected Windows layout. Microsoft describes this behavior in its file system redirector documentation.
The safest way to obtain the correct architecture is to run the complete Microsoft DirectX redistributable. Do not download an x86 file merely because its size or version appears in a search result.
How to identify the game architecture
There is no universal architecture label in every launcher, but these clues are useful:
- Older games are often 32-bit.
- A game installed under a folder marked
x86is commonly 32-bit. - A launcher or executable’s Details or Compatibility information may identify its architecture.
- A
0xc000007berror often points to mixed 32-bit and 64-bit files. - A native 64-bit game may include a separate x64 executable or clearly identify itself as 64-bit.
If you are uncertain, use the official runtime installer rather than trying to choose and copy a single DLL manually.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Windows Security or another antivirus program may quarantine a damaged, altered, or incorrectly detected runtime file. This is more likely when the error appeared immediately after a security alert.
To inspect Windows Security:
-
Open Start.
-
Search for Windows Security.
-
Open the application.
-
Select Virus & threat protection.
-
Select Protection history.
-
Review recent events involving the game, DirectX installer, or
d3dx10_35.dll.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Do not immediately choose Allow for an unknown DLL downloaded from a random website. First identify where the file came from.
The safer recovery order is:
-
Reinstall the official Microsoft DirectX runtime.
-
Verify the game files.
-
Reinstall the game’s own prerequisite package.
-
Only consider restoring the quarantined file if its origin is trusted and the detection has been confirmed as a false positive.
Microsoft explains the restore and allow actions, along with the risks of allowing a genuine threat, in its Protection History guidance.
If the file repeatedly disappears after reinstalling, scan the computer with Windows Security, including Microsoft Defender Offline when appropriate. Repeated disappearance can also indicate disk problems, malware, or an application installer that is failing to preserve its files.

Use DISM and SFC when the error appears alongside wider Windows problems, such as failed installers, damaged system files, repeated application crashes, or unrelated operating-system errors.

Open an elevated Command Prompt again if necessary and run:

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
sfc /scannow
Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
Microsoft documents this order and these commands in its System File Checker guidance.
If DISM or SFC reports that it repaired files, restart Windows and run the official DirectX installer again. If both commands report no integrity violations, return to the June 2010 runtime and game verification steps. A clean SFC result does not prove that the optional D3DX10 component is installed.
If you keep repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show exactly what its free scan finds; repair is done by the full version. It is optional, and when the file belongs to one game, reinstalling that game or its bundled runtime remains the definitive fix.
Fix 7: Install pending Windows updates
Windows Update is useful for operating-system repairs, servicing components, security fixes, and drivers. It should not be treated as a replacement for the legacy DirectX redistributable.

Windows Features does not install this DLL
Windows includes optional features that can support older applications, but the Turn Windows features on or off panel is not the installer for d3dx10_35.dll.
To inspect Windows Features:
-
Open Start.
-
Search for Turn Windows features on or off.
-
Open the result.
-
Review the available features.
-
Close the window without changing settings unless a separate application specifically requires a particular feature.

Do not enable or disable unrelated features as a substitute for installing the DirectX End-User Runtime. This file comes from the legacy DirectX component package or the application’s own prerequisite installer.
Fix 8: Update or reinstall the graphics driver when the symptoms point to the GPU
A graphics driver can cause Direct3D initialization failures, black screens, display-driver crashes, and GPU-specific game crashes. It normally does not restore a missing d3dx10_35.dll, because this file belongs to the legacy DirectX runtime rather than the graphics-card driver package.
Use Device Manager when the symptoms suggest a driver issue.
-
Right-click Start.
-
Select Device Manager.
-
Expand Display adapters.
-
Right-click the graphics adapter.
-
Select Update driver.
-
Select Search automatically for drivers.
-
Install an offered update.
-

Do not start with a driver reinstall when the only symptom is “d3dx10_35.dll was not found.” Install the DirectX runtime first.
If hunting through Device Manager and manufacturer download pages is taking longer than the repair itself, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what is wrong, while driver installation is done by the full version. It is optional, and a missing d3dx10_35.dll still calls for the DirectX or game installer.
Fix 9: Use System Restore after a known system change
System Restore is appropriate when the failure began directly after a driver installation, Windows update, software installation, or other major system change and a suitable restore point exists.
It is not the first choice for a missing legacy DirectX file, but it can help when the timing strongly points to a recent system change.
-

What the common errors mean
“The program can’t start because d3dx10_35.dll is missing”
This usually means the application requested the legacy D3DX10 component and Windows could not find a usable copy.
Start with:
- The official June 2010 DirectX offline package.
- The game’s bundled
DXSETUP.exe. - Game file verification.
- Architecture checks if the error continues.
“The code execution cannot proceed because d3dx10_35.dll was not found”
This is another standard Windows loader message. It does not necessarily tell you whether the file was never installed, was removed, is in the wrong location, or failed to load because of another dependency.
Use the same repair order rather than copying a replacement file manually.

Error 0xc000012f
The “not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error” form usually points to a bad image, incompatible binary, or corrupted DLL rather than a simple missing file.
The relevant repair sequence is:
-
Reinstall the official DirectX runtime.
-
Verify the game files.
-
Check antivirus Protection History.
-
Remove or replace unofficial local copies through the launcher or application installer.
-
Check for disk corruption if files keep becoming damaged.
Error 0x7E
A 0x7E failure generally indicates that a required module could not be loaded. The named DLL may be the first file Windows reports, while another dependency or architecture mismatch is the underlying cause.
Recommended Free Tools
Run the official installer, verify the application, and check whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the file exists but the program still says it is missing
Seeing a file with the right name does not prove that the application can load it.
Possible causes include:
- The file has the wrong architecture.
- The file is corrupt.
- The game is loading another copy from its own directory.
- A dependency of
d3dx10_35.dllis missing. - The application needs another legacy DirectX component.
- The loader error names the module involved in the failure rather than the first missing dependency.
- The application is using a different installation than the one you repaired.
Check the game folder and the relevant Windows runtime directories, but do not delete copies blindly. Use the official installer or launcher verification process to replace them.
Windows follows a defined DLL search order. An incorrect file beside the game executable can override another copy elsewhere. Microsoft documents this behavior in its Dynamic-Link Library Search Order documentation.

If the file exists in the game folder, verify the game files first. If the file exists only in a system directory, run the official DirectX installer again. If the error changes to a different DLL, repair that newly reported prerequisite separately.
If DXSETUP.exe fails
A failed DirectX setup usually needs its log rather than another random DLL.
Check these files:
C:\Windows\DXError.log
C:\Windows\DirectX.log
If the logs exist:
-
Open them with Notepad.
-
Scroll to the latest entries.
-
Look for an error code or failed component.
-
Search that exact error within Microsoft support documentation.
If the extracted package may be incomplete:
-
Delete or abandon the failed extraction folder.
-
Download a fresh copy from Microsoft.
-
Extract it to a normal local folder such as:

Visual C++ and .NET errors are separate
Visual C++ and .NET are separate prerequisites. They do not install d3dx10_35.dll.
If the game reports both this DLL and a Visual C++ or .NET problem:
-
Install the DirectX runtime for the D3DX error.
-
Install the Visual C++ package required by the game for the MSVC error.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Install or repair the required .NET component for the .NET error.
-
Verify the game files afterward.
Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable documentation describes those packages as C and C++ runtime libraries, not D3DX components.
Installing Visual C++ 2015 or a newer .NET version by itself will not be expected to restore this DirectX file.
What not to do
Do not use random DLL download websites
Avoid downloading d3dx10_35.dll from an unknown DLL library or file-sharing page.
A loose file may have:
- The wrong x86 or x64 architecture
- The wrong side-by-side D3DX revision
- A damaged binary
- A tampered binary
- An incomplete dependency set
- A location that overrides the correct runtime
The safe sources are:
- Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)
- Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer
- The affected game’s own installer or bundled prerequisite folder
- The official verification or repair process in the game launcher
Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64
Manual copying does not install the complete runtime and can create an architecture mismatch.
It can also leave an application using a local file that overrides the copy installed by the supported runtime. Let the Microsoft installer or the game installer place the correct components.
Do not use regsvr32
d3dx10_35.dll is a runtime library loaded through the application’s imports. It is not normally a COM or ActiveX component that needs registration.

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that export registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft explains this requirement in its DllRegisterServer documentation.
If you try to register this file, Windows may report that the module loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found. Registration will not repair a missing, corrupted, or mismatched DirectX runtime.
Do not assume Disk Cleanup caused the problem
If the error appeared after Disk Cleanup, treat the timing as a clue rather than proof. Microsoft documentation does not establish that ordinary Disk Cleanup intentionally removes this particular D3DX file.

FAQ
Is d3dx10_35.dll part of Windows?
Not as a guaranteed core Windows component. It is an optional, side-by-side legacy DirectX SDK component that may be installed by Microsoft’s DirectX redistributable or by the game that needs it.
Is it part of DirectX 10.35?
No. The _35 suffix identifies a particular D3DX10 library revision. It is not a DirectX product version.

Do Windows 10 and Windows 11 include it?
They include modern DirectX components, but they do not guarantee that this optional legacy D3DX10 file is installed. Use the June 2010 DirectX runtime or the game’s bundled installer.
Should I download the 32-bit or 64-bit file?
Use the architecture required by the application. Most older games are 32-bit and need the x86 component, even on 64-bit Windows. Native 64-bit applications need x64 components.
Can dxdiag confirm that the file is installed?
No. dxdiag can show the modern DirectX environment, but that does not prove that optional D3DX10 libraries are present.
Will SFC restore d3dx10_35.dll?
Not necessarily. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It is not the primary installer for optional legacy D3DX components.
Should I reinstall my graphics driver?
Only when the symptoms indicate a graphics-driver problem, such as Direct3D initialization failures, black screens, display-driver errors, or GPU-specific crashes. A missing d3dx10_35.dll normally requires the DirectX runtime or game installer.
Does Visual C++ install this file?
No. Visual C++ installs C and C++ runtime libraries. It is a separate prerequisite.
Does .NET install this file?
No. .NET is a separate application framework and does not provide this D3DX10 runtime library.
Where should the file appear?
It may appear in a Windows runtime directory or beside the application when deployed locally by the program installer. Do not assume every valid installation uses the same location.
Is manual copying ever appropriate?
For ordinary end users, no. A vendor-controlled application may ship its own local runtime files, but the supported action is to run the supplied installer or use the launcher’s repair process.
What if the file keeps disappearing?
Inspect Windows Security Protection History, reinstall from an official source, verify the game, scan for malware, and check the drive for errors. Repeated disappearance can indicate quarantine, corruption, disk failure, or a damaged installer.
When should I use System Restore?
Use it when the problem began after a known driver, update, or software installation and a restore point exists from before the failure. It is not the primary repair for a missing legacy DirectX component.
