If d3dx9_24.dll is missing, install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010), which adds the legacy D3DX9 files without replacing DirectX 12. Do not download the DLL by itself from a random file site, and do not replace d3dx9_24.dll with d3dx9_43.dll.

What this file actually does

d3dx9_24.dll is a versioned Microsoft DirectX 9 D3DX utility-library file. D3DX provided helper functions for older Direct3D software, including mathematics, meshes, textures, and line drawing. Microsoft later deprecated D3DX, but older games, emulators, graphics programs, and installers can still depend on a particular D3DX9 version. Microsoft’s D3DX documentation

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The filename is important:

  • d3dx9 identifies the Direct3D 9 utility family.
  • _24 identifies one specific D3DX version.
  • .dll means it is a dynamically linked library loaded by an application.

The numbered D3DX files coexist side by side. A program built against d3dx9_24.dll may continue looking specifically for that filename even when d3dx9_43.dll is present. Microsoft’s DirectX deployment guidance explains why these versions are installed separately rather than treated as interchangeable. Microsoft DirectX installation guidance

This is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, .NET component, graphics-driver file, or core Direct3D system DLL. It is an optional legacy DirectX component installed by the DirectX runtime package or by the program that bundled that runtime.

Fix 1: Install the official DirectX End-User Runtime

The most likely solution is Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010). This package installs legacy side-by-side components, including the numbered d3dx9_24.dll through d3dx9_43.dll family. It does not downgrade DirectX 12 or replace the modern DirectX version included with Windows.

Use Microsoft’s official download pages:

Use the web installer when the computer is online

The web installer is named dxwebsetup.exe. It downloads the required legacy components during setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close the game or application reporting the error.
  2. Open Microsoft’s DirectX Web Installer page.
  3. Download dxwebsetup.exe.
  4. Open the downloaded file.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Accept the license terms.
  7. Allow setup to download and install the required components.
  8. Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
  9. Start the affected game or application again.

A successful installation normally means the original missing-file message no longer appears and the program reaches its normal launcher or main menu. The DirectX version shown by dxdiag may still be DirectX 12. That is expected because the installer adds optional legacy files rather than changing the core DirectX version.

Use the offline redist when setup fails or the computer is offline

The offline package is named directx_Jun2010_redist.exe. Microsoft says it includes the components installed by the web installer and is useful when downloading individual components fails.

  1. Download directx_Jun2010_redist.exe from Microsoft.
  2. Open the downloaded file.
  3. Choose a local extraction folder, such as C:\DXRedist.
  4. Open the extraction folder in File Explorer.
  5. Right-click DXSETUP.exe.
  6. Select Run as administrator.
  7. Accept the license terms.
  8. Let the installer complete.
  9. Restart Windows if requested.
  10. Test the game again.

The redist executable is an extraction package. Running only the self-extractor is not the same as running DXSETUP.exe from the extracted folder.

If the setup window closes without fixing the problem, check:

C:\Windows\DirectX.log

Do not delete these logs before reading them or including their relevant error text in a support request.

Why DirectX 12 does not include everything from DirectX 9

Windows 10 and Windows 11 can report DirectX 12 while still lacking d3dx9_24.dll. These are different layers:

  • The DirectX version reported by dxdiag describes the modern core runtime and supported graphics APIs.
  • D3DX9 files are optional, versioned helper libraries from the older DirectX SDK.
  • Older applications load the exact D3DX filename against which they were built.

This is why installing Windows updates or seeing DirectX 12 in the diagnostic tool does not prove that every DirectX 9-era game dependency is installed.

There is also no normal Windows Features checkbox that enables this particular DLL. Do not search for a “DirectX 9 feature” under Turn Windows features on or off. Install the official DirectX runtime instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Run the game’s own DirectX installer

Many older PC games include a copy of the June 2010 runtime in their installation directory. The path often resembles:

<Game folder>\_CommonRedist\DirectX\Jun2010\DXSETUP.exe

The exact folder varies by title and launcher.

  1. Open the game’s installation folder.
  2. Search that folder for DXSETUP.exe.
  3. If you find a DirectX installer inside a Jun2010 or _CommonRedist folder, right-click it.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Complete the installation.
  6. Restart the game.

This installer may contain the dependency set expected by that specific title. Steam also documents that games can include secondary installers and that skipping or blocking them can prevent a game from launching.

If the game’s installer is missing, damaged, or produces an internal error, use Microsoft’s official offline redist instead. Do not combine files from an unknown download with the game’s installation.

Fix 3: Install the correct architecture

Architecture is a common source of confusion because the Windows folder names are counterintuitive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On 64-bit Windows:

  • Native 64-bit programs use the x64 runtime in %windir%\System32.
  • 32-bit programs use the x86 runtime in %windir%\SysWOW64.

On 32-bit Windows:

  • 32-bit programs use the x86 runtime in %windir%\System32.

Microsoft documents this behavior in its DirectX deployment guidance and file-system redirector documentation. DirectX deployment documentation File-system redirector documentation

A 32-bit game needs the x86 DirectX components even when it is running on 64-bit Windows. Most older games are 32-bit, so installing only an x64 copy may leave the original error unchanged.

How to identify the application architecture

The simplest approach is to run the official DirectX installer and allow it to install the required components. If you need to investigate further:

  1. Open the game’s installation folder.
  2. Look for documentation or launcher information identifying whether the program is x86 or x64.
  3. Check the executable’s properties or the publisher’s support information.
  4. If a 32-bit application works after installing the x86 runtime but not after an x64-only installation, the architecture was the issue.

Do not manually copy an x64 DLL into a 32-bit game folder. A wrong-architecture library can cause a bad-image message, 0xc000007b, or another loader failure.

Fix 4: Verify or repair the game files

If the DirectX runtime is installed but the game still reports the error, the game’s own files may be incomplete. This can happen after a failed update, interrupted installation, disk cleanup, or antivirus quarantine.

Steam

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Select Library.
  3. Right-click the game.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Open Installed Files.
  6. Select Verify integrity of game files.
  7. Wait for Steam to finish.
  8. Start the game again.

Verification repairs files inside the game directory. It does not necessarily install the Windows-wide DirectX runtime, so run the game’s bundled DXSETUP.exe or Microsoft’s runtime installer as well if the error remains.

Epic Games Store

  1. Open the Epic Games Launcher.
  2. Open Library.
  3. Find the game.
  4. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  5. Choose Manage.
  6. Select Verify.
  7. Wait for the process to complete.
  8. Launch the game again.

GOG Galaxy

  1. Open GOG Galaxy.
  2. Select the game.
  3. Open Manage installation.
  4. Choose Verify / Repair.
  5. Wait for the repair to finish.
  6. Start the game again.

If verification reports no problems but the DLL error remains, the launcher has confirmed the game files while the Windows-side legacy runtime is still missing. Install the June 2010 runtime separately.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine

If the game worked previously and d3dx9_24.dll disappeared after a security scan, inspect the antivirus history before reinstalling random files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Search for Windows Security.
  3. Open Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review recent detections.
  6. Open the relevant event.
  7. Check the detected file path and threat details.
  8. Restore or allow the file only if it came from Microsoft’s DirectX package or a trusted game installation and you have verified the machine is clean.

Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine threat can put the device at risk. Do not broadly disable antivirus protection to force a game to launch. If the origin is unclear, leave the file quarantined, run a scan, and reinstall the runtime or repair the game from a trusted source.

If the game repeatedly recreates a suspicious local DLL, contact the game publisher or launcher support rather than repeatedly allowing the detection.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components when the installer itself fails

SFC and DISM repair Windows component corruption. They do not normally install an optional D3DX9 library that was never part of the Windows image, so use them when Windows itself appears damaged or when multiple unrelated programs are failing.

First install pending Windows updates:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Try the DirectX installer again.

Then run DISM and SFC from an elevated Command Prompt:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve User Account Control.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Run DXSETUP.exe again and test the program.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart before testing. If it reports that it could not repair everything, repeat the process after DISM has completed and save the final message for support.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the Windows component problems involved in this manual process, while the full version performs the repair; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected game remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that program.

Fix 7: Update graphics drivers only for graphics-related symptoms

A missing d3dx9_24.dll is normally a runtime-dependency problem, not a graphics-driver problem. Updating a GPU driver will not normally install this D3DX file.

Check the driver when the error changes to one of these types:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Direct3D initialization failure
  • Unsupported hardware
  • Rendering corruption
  • Device removal or driver reset
  • A crash that occurs after the game reaches its graphics screen

Check Windows Update for driver updates

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Advanced options.
  4. Open Optional updates if it is available.
  5. Expand Driver updates.
  6. Install a relevant display-driver update.
  7. Restart Windows.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the graphics adapter.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

If Device Manager does not find a suitable driver, use the official support channel for the graphics-card manufacturer. Avoid driver packages from unrelated download sites.

When several driver versions are installed or the correct architecture is unclear, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while the full version performs the driver installation; it is optional and does not replace the DirectX runtime when that is the actual missing dependency.

Fix 8: Test for a damaged game-local DLL

After installing the official runtime, the program may still fail because it loads a conflicting DLL from its own folder before searching the Windows runtime directories.

Do not delete or overwrite files immediately. First:

  1. Verify or repair the game through its launcher.
  2. Run the game’s bundled DXSETUP.exe.
  3. Reinstall the game if verification does not restore the correct files.
  4. Check whether the error changes after reinstalling.

A developer may legitimately deploy a matching D3DX runtime beside an application, but that copy should come from the application installer or Microsoft’s redistributable package. A manually downloaded DLL can be the wrong version, wrong architecture, modified, or incompatible with the application.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 is not a repair command for every DLL. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.

d3dx9_24.dll is a runtime API library, not a COM or ActiveX component that users should register. Running:

regsvr32 d3dx9_24.dll

usually produces an error similar to:

The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.

That message does not mean the DirectX installation needs another registration attempt. Install the correct runtime instead. Microsoft regsvr32 documentation

Use System Restore for a sudden post-update failure

If the game worked until a recent driver change, cleanup operation, application installation, or Windows update, System Restore can be appropriate.

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the failure.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs while normally leaving personal files unchanged. It is not a replacement for installing the June 2010 runtime, but it can reverse a recent change that broke a previously working installation. Microsoft System Restore guidance

Why random DLL downloads are risky

Downloading only d3dx9_24.dll from an unrelated DLL archive is not the supported repair path. It can fail because:

  • The file is the wrong x86 or x64 architecture.
  • The file belongs to a different D3DX version.
  • The download is modified or malicious.
  • The game needs additional DirectX files.
  • The game’s local installation is damaged.
  • The file is placed in a directory the application does not search.
  • A conflicting local DLL continues to load first.

Use Microsoft’s official web installer or offline redist, or use the game’s own trusted DirectX installer. The filename alone is not proof that a copy is genuine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the error names another file

Do not apply the d3dx9_24.dll procedure blindly if the message names a different dependency.

Examples include:

  • d3d9.dll: a core Direct3D or Windows graphics-path issue
  • d3dcompiler_43.dll: another legacy DirectX component
  • xinput1_3.dll: an older DirectX input component
  • msvcp*.dll or vcruntime*.dll: a Visual C++ runtime issue
  • .NET assembly errors: a .NET installation or application issue

Install or repair the component named by the actual error. Installing Visual C++, .NET, or a graphics driver without evidence that it owns the missing file is unlikely to restore d3dx9_24.dll.

Use dxdiag for persistent graphics problems

dxdiag can confirm the Windows DirectX environment and collect information for the game publisher or hardware vendor.

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Search for dxdiag.
  3. Open DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
  4. Review the System tab.
  5. Review Display and Sound.
  6. Select Save All Information.
  7. Save the report to a location you can find.
  8. Include the relevant details when requesting support.

The report can show the core DirectX version, Windows build, display adapter, driver information, and diagnostic notes. It does not prove that optional D3DX9 files are installed.

Frequently asked questions

Is d3dx9_24.dll legitimate?

Yes. It is a genuine Microsoft DirectX 9 D3DX utility-library filename. A particular copy is trustworthy only when it came from Microsoft’s DirectX package or a trusted application installer. A file with this name in a random temporary or download directory is not automatically safe.

Is it included in Windows 10 or Windows 11?

Not necessarily. Windows includes modern DirectX components, but d3dx9_24.dll is an optional legacy, versioned D3DX component. It may never have been installed on a clean Windows system.

Does DirectX 12 include it?

DirectX 12 does not guarantee that the optional D3DX9 files are present. Install the DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) when an older program specifically requests this file.

Can d3dx9_43.dll replace d3dx9_24.dll?

No. The numbered DLLs represent different D3DX versions. A program linked against _24 can require that exact filename even when _43 exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a 32-bit game need the x86 runtime on 64-bit Windows?

Yes. A 32-bit game uses the x86 DirectX components. On 64-bit Windows, those files are associated with the SysWOW64 system directory, while native 64-bit components use System32.

Should I copy the DLL beside the game executable?

Do not copy a separately downloaded DLL. Let DirectX setup or the game’s trusted installer place the correct components. Developers can deploy matching runtime files beside an application, but ordinary users should repair the installation instead.

Should I run regsvr32?

No. d3dx9_24.dll is not normally registered with regsvr32. The correct fix is to install or repair the DirectX runtime.

What if the file exists in System32 but the game still fails?

The game may be 32-bit and require the x86 runtime, or it may be loading a conflicting local DLL. Install the official runtime, verify the game files, and run the game’s bundled DXSETUP.exe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if DirectX setup reports an internal system error?

Use the offline redist. Extract directx_Jun2010_redist.exe, open the extracted folder, run DXSETUP.exe as administrator, and inspect:

C:\Windows\DXError.log
C:\Windows\DirectX.log

If setup still fails, install Windows updates and run DISM followed by SFC.

What information should I provide when asking for help?

Include:

  • The exact error text
  • The name of the game or application
  • Whether it came from Steam, Epic, GOG, or another installer
  • Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Whether the game’s file verification completed successfully
  • Whether the June 2010 runtime installer completed
  • Any relevant DirectX setup log entries
  • Any antivirus quarantine event involving the file
  • The dxdiag report if the problem includes graphics initialization or crashes

That information distinguishes a missing legacy runtime from a damaged game installation, architecture mismatch, antivirus removal, or separate graphics-driver failure.
