If d3dx9_32.dll is missing, install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime instead of downloading the DLL by itself. DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 can be installed on Windows 10 or Windows 11 while this older D3DX9 component is still absent.
What this file actually does
d3dx9_32.dll is a versioned utility library from the legacy D3DX9 family. It supports older Direct3D 9 games and graphics applications that use helper functions from the DirectX SDK.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
It belongs to DirectX, but it is not part of the modern core DirectX files built into Windows. Microsoft describes D3DX9 as an optional, side-by-side component used by older software. The D3DX libraries are documented separately from the core Direct3D runtime in Microsoft’s DirectX installation documentation and D3DX documentation.
The _32 in the filename does not mean that the file is always 32-bit. It identifies the particular D3DX9 library name or revision. Both x86 and x64 versions can exist under the same filename.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
On 64-bit Windows, the usual system locations are:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\d3dx9_32.dllfor the 32-bit x86 componentC:\Windows\System32\d3dx9_32.dllfor the 64-bit x64 component
The names are confusing, but System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files. A 32-bit game needs the x86 version even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
A game can also include an application-local copy beside its executable. In that situation, the game may load its private copy before looking for the system-wide runtime.
This file is not:
- A Visual C++ Redistributable file
- A .NET Framework file
- A normal graphics-driver file
- A core Windows file restored automatically by every Windows installation
- A COM component that should be registered with
regsvr32
The file may be installed by Microsoft’s DirectX runtime or bundled by the game that needs it. The correct source depends on how the application was packaged, but the safest general repair is Microsoft’s official DirectX End-User Runtime.

Fix 1: Install the DirectX web installer
For most missing-file errors, use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer.
This package installs legacy side-by-side components such as D3DX9, XInput 1.3, XAudio 2.7, XACT, and related files. It does not downgrade DirectX 11 or DirectX 12.
- Open Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime page.
- Download
dxwebsetup.exe. - Open the downloaded file.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows displays one.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Allow the setup program to download and install the required components.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Launch the affected game or application again.
Do not judge success by the DirectX version shown in dxdiag. The important test is whether the program that reported the error now starts.
If the installer completes but the same error remains, continue with the offline package below. The web installer may fail because of network access, damaged setup data, permissions, antivirus interference, or an incomplete previous installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix 2: Run the complete June 2010 redistributable
The full offline package is usually the better repair when the web installer does nothing or reports an internal error. Download Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010).
The download is named directx_Jun2010_redist.exe. It is a self-extracting archive, not the final installer itself. You must extract it and then run DXSETUP.exe.
- Download
directx_Jun2010_redist.exefrom Microsoft. - Create a temporary folder such as
C:\DXRedist. - Open the downloaded redistributable.
- When it asks where to extract the files, enter
C:\DXRedist. - Open File Explorer and browse to
C:\DXRedist. - Find
DXSETUP.exe. - Right-click
DXSETUP.exeand select Run as administrator if that option is available. - Follow the DirectX Setup prompts.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Launch the affected program again.
Running only directx_Jun2010_redist.exe and closing the extraction dialog does not necessarily install the runtime. The important step is launching the extracted DXSETUP.exe.
The installer deploys the appropriate legacy components for the operating system and applications. You should not manually select an x86 or x64 DLL or copy one into a system folder.

To open them:
- Press

- Look for
DXError.logandDirectX.log. - Open the files in Notepad and review the most recent entries.
Microsoft documents DirectSetup and the use of DXSETUP.exe in its DirectX installation guidance. Do not install the full legacy DirectX SDK merely to repair a game. The SDK is intended for maintaining old development projects, not for ordinary end users.
Fix 3: Run the game’s own DirectX installer
Many older games include the exact runtime components they expect. Look in the game’s installation folder for directories named:
RedistDirectXSupport_CommonRedistInstallers
You may find DXSETUP.exe or another setup program there.
Use this procedure:
- Close the game and its launcher.
- Open the game’s installation folder.
- Open any
Redist,DirectX, orSupportfolder. - Run the included DirectX installer.
- Approve administrative permission if requested.
- Restart the computer if requested.
- Launch the game again.
If the game vendor deliberately ships an application-local copy, allow the official installer to place it. Do not replace that file with one copied from another computer or downloaded from a DLL website.
Steam notes that games can include secondary installers for DirectX and other runtime components in its support documentation.
Fix 4: Verify the game files
A patch, failed update, cleanup utility, or launcher repair can remove or damage a game’s private runtime files. Verify the installation before reinstalling the entire game.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish.
- Start the game again.
Steam may redownload missing files and may restore bundled redistributables. Its file verification instructions use the same general process.
Epic Games Launcher
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the game.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for verification to complete.
- Start the game again.
Epic documents this process in its game verification support guide.

Other launchers
Use the launcher’s Repair, Verify, or Scan and repair command. If the launcher includes its own DirectX installer, run that installer after verification.
If verification reports no problems but the application still fails, uninstall and reinstall the game from its official launcher. This is the definitive repair when the game’s own application-local DLL is damaged or incorrectly deployed.
Fix 5: Check the application architecture
A 32-bit game needs the 32-bit x86 DirectX component. This remains true on 64-bit Windows.

Do not interpret _32 as a statement about the file’s architecture. The same filename can refer to x86 or x64 builds.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To determine whether a game is 32-bit or 64-bit:
- Open the game’s installation folder.
- Right-click the main executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and review the available product information.
- If the information is inconclusive, check the game’s official technical documentation or launcher requirements.
You can also use Task Manager while the game is running:
- Start Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Details.
- Find the game process.
- On some Windows versions, a 32-bit process is marked with
(32 bit).
Do not manually move a DLL between System32 and SysWOW64. DirectX Setup is designed to install the correct components and maintain the expected deployment.
If the game folder already contains d3dx9_32.dll, that copy may take precedence over the system copy. A damaged or wrong-architecture application-local file can therefore cause an error even after the system runtime has been repaired. Use game verification or reinstall the program instead of overwriting that file manually.
Fix 6: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can quarantine a game file or block an installer. Check the security history before restoring anything.
Recommended Free Tools
In Windows Security:
- Open the Start menu.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any entry related to the game, DirectX installer, or
d3dx9_32.dll.
Do not restore an arbitrary DLL simply because its filename matches the error. First establish that the file came from Microsoft’s DirectX package or the game’s official installer and that its location and signature are appropriate.
If an official installer was blocked:
- Download a fresh copy from Microsoft or the game publisher.
- Confirm that the installer is the file you intended to download.
- Run a new installation.
- Restart the game.
Microsoft explains quarantine and restore decisions in its Windows Security Protection history guidance. Do not disable antivirus protection globally to force a DLL into place.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
SFC and DISM are not the normal way to install D3DX9. The missing library is an optional DirectX runtime component, not an ordinary protected Windows system file.
Use these commands when:
- The DirectX installer reports an internal system error.
- Windows itself is malfunctioning.
- Several unrelated system components are damaged.
- SFC or DISM has already reported broader corruption.
- The problem began after disk errors, malware removal, or a failed Windows update.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the affected game again.
If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, make sure Windows Update is working and run the command again. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart before testing the application.
If you want help identifying broader component damage rather than repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan showing what it finds; applying repairs is handled by the full version, and it is not required for the DirectX runtime repair.
Microsoft’s command guidance is available in its System File Checker and DISM support article.
Fix 8: Update or reinstall the graphics driver only when symptoms point there
A graphics-driver reinstall normally does not install d3dx9_32.dll. Do not make it the first response to a precise missing-DLL message.

- Select the option to remove the driver package only if you understand that Windows may temporarily use a basic display driver.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver from the graphics manufacturer’s official support channel.
If identifying a stale graphics driver across several devices is the difficult part, Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan showing what it finds; installing drivers through the full version is optional, and it is not a substitute for repairing the game that owns the missing file.
Fix 9: Check Windows Features for separate legacy requirements
Windows Features can help an old game with a separate DirectPlay dependency, but it does not install d3dx9_32.dll.
If the game also reports a DirectPlay or legacy networking error:

Do not run:
regsvr32 d3dx9_32.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. A DirectX runtime library is not normally installed by manually registering it.
If you run the command, Windows may report that the entry point was not found or that the module could not be loaded. That does not mean another version of regsvr32 will solve the problem.
Microsoft explains the purpose and limitations of the command in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation.

Why random DLL downloads are risky
Downloading an isolated d3dx9_32.dll from a random DLL website can introduce several problems:
- Malware or a modified binary
- The wrong x86 or x64 architecture
- The wrong D3DX revision
- A missing dependency that produces a second error
- An unsigned file placed in a trusted directory
- An application-local copy that overrides the repaired system component
- A temporary improvement that hides the real game installation problem
Use Microsoft’s web installer, the June 2010 offline package, or the game’s official installer and verification tools.

What “Bad Image” means
A missing-file message and a Bad Image message point to different problems.
A message such as:
The program can't start because d3dx9_32.dll is missing from your computer.
usually means the required component was not found in a location available to the application.
A message such as:
C:\Windows\System32\d3dx9_32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
usually indicates a corrupted, incompatible, wrong-architecture, or unofficial copy.
For a Bad Image error:
- Check the game folder for a private copy of
d3dx9_32.dll. - Do not replace it with a random download.
- Verify or repair the game.
- Run the official June 2010 DirectX redistributable.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game again.
If only one game produces the error, the game installation is more suspicious than the entire Windows runtime. If several older DirectX applications fail, investigate the system-wide runtime and Windows health.
When the file exists but the program still says it is missing
Windows can report a missing DLL when the named file is present but cannot be loaded. Common reasons include:
- A dependent DLL is missing
- The file has the wrong architecture
- The copy is corrupted
- The application is loading a different copy beside its executable
- Antivirus software blocked access
- The program expects a different D3DX component
- The file is in a location the application does not search
Check the following:
- Look in the game folder for
d3dx9_32.dll. - Check
C:\Windows\System32. - Check
C:\Windows\SysWOW64on 64-bit Windows. - Confirm whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Check Windows Security Protection history.
- Run the game’s file verification tool.
- Reinstall the official DirectX runtime.
Do not rely on file size alone to authenticate the DLL. Source, architecture, digital signature, and the application’s requirements all matter.
Use dxdiag for diagnosis, not installation
dxdiag can confirm that Windows detects DirectX and can provide useful graphics information, but its reported DirectX version does not confirm that optional D3DX9 files are installed.
To save a diagnostic report:
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
dxdiag
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the tool to finish collecting information.
- Select Save All Information.
- Save the report to the Desktop.
- Review the System, Display, and Notes sections.
Use the report to check for graphics-driver errors, feature-level problems, or unrelated Direct3D failures. Do not use it as proof that d3dx9_32.dll is present.

System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs while preserving personal files. It does not replace a proper repair of a game that continues to ship a damaged application-local DLL.
Final diagnostic checklist
Work through these questions in order:
- Does the error name
d3dx9_32.dllimmediately when the program starts? - Did you install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime?
- If the web installer failed, did you extract the June 2010 package and run
DXSETUP.exe? - Does the game include its own
Redist,Support, orDirectXinstaller? - Did you verify the game files through Steam, Epic, or another launcher?
- Is the program 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Is there an application-local copy beside the game executable?
- Does Windows Security show a quarantine or block?
- Does the error say “missing,” “could not be loaded,” or “Bad Image”?
- Does the problem affect one program or several older DirectX applications?
- Did DirectX setup create
DXError.logorDirectX.log? - Are there broader Windows errors that justify DISM and SFC?
- Does the game now start but fail with a graphics-device error requiring driver work?
The usual successful path is to install the official DirectX End-User Runtime, run the game’s own installer if present, verify the game files, and then investigate architecture or Windows corruption only if the error persists.
