Before changing anything, note three details:
- Which program, printer, scanner, camera, or Windows feature triggers the message?
- Does it happen during startup, when opening an application, or while adding a network device?
- Is the affected application 32-bit or 64-bit?
dafwsd.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows file. It supports Web Services on Devices, or WSD, so the error usually points to damaged Windows components, a failed device installation, or a dependency that Windows cannot load.
What dafwsd.dll does
The file’s embedded description is DAF WSD Provider. It belongs to Microsoft Windows and helps Windows discover and communicate with network devices, including printers, scanners, cameras, and similar WSD-enabled hardware.

WSD is Microsoft’s implementation of the Devices Profile for Web Services. A printer or scanner may be the first place you notice the problem, but an error involving dafwsd.dll does not prove that the device itself caused the failure.
On 64-bit Windows, the normal path is:
C:WindowsSystem32DAFWSD.dll
A 32-bit copy may be present here:
C:WindowsSysWOW64DAFWSD.dll
The directory names are unintuitive. System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files.

Older third-party file indexes show several historical Windows versions and both architectures. Those lists are not a complete or current Microsoft version inventory, so do not select a replacement based on a version number from a file-indexing page.
What the error messages mean
The following are common reported forms of the problem:
- “The program can’t start because dafwsd.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “DAFWSD.dll Not Found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because dafwsd.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting dafwsd.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “dafwsd.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are commonly reproduced error wordings, not a Microsoft-published DAFWSD-specific error catalogue.
A missing-file message can mean that the file was deleted, quarantined, or damaged. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean Windows found dafwsd.dll but could not load one of its dependencies. In that situation, copying another DLL into the same folder usually does not solve the problem.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed or incomplete Windows update can leave system files or the component store inconsistent.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 10, open Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately require a restart.
- Retry the program or device that produced the error.
If the error returns, continue with the system repair commands below. Do not search for a replacement copy of dafwsd.dll first.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Microsoft recommends using DISM to repair the Windows component source before running System File Checker. SFC can then replace protected files using that repaired source.

- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. It can remain at one percentage for a while.
- When it completes successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the affected application or WSD device.
A successful result is a message stating that Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations, or that it found and repaired corrupt files. If SFC says it could not repair some files, continue to the fallback steps rather than copying a DLL manually.
When you are repeatedly hunting through repair commands and cannot tell which system files changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show its findings; the repair function requires the full version, and it is not required for this Windows fix.
If DISM cannot find source files
DISM may use Windows Update as its repair source. If Windows Update is damaged or unavailable, use matching Windows installation media or another matching repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to a matching Windows installation source. Do not use an unrelated Windows version or a random copy of DAFWSD.dll.
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
If repair still fails, inspect:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Then consider System Restore or an in-place Windows repair installation. Back up important files before using recovery or repair-installation options.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can quarantine a genuine Windows DLL after a detection or a suspected modification.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
DAFWSD.dll. - Check its path, detection name, and action.
- Do not restore it automatically if the path or detection details are suspicious.
- If the file is in the normal Windows directory and its Microsoft signature is valid, review the detection carefully before restoring it.
- Run a full scan, or use Microsoft Defender’s offline scan if malware or unauthorized modification is suspected.
- Run DISM and SFC again after the security issue is addressed.
Restoring only the DLL is not enough if malware changed other Windows files or services.
Fix 4: Verify the file path and Microsoft signature
A file named dafwsd.dll outside the Windows directories deserves extra scrutiny. A genuine Windows copy is normally in System32, with a possible 32-bit copy in SysWOW64.

To inspect it:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to
C:WindowsSystem32. - Find
DAFWSD.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the Details tab for the description and company information.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the Microsoft signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
A Microsoft signature supports authenticity, but it does not prove that every aspect of the file or its surrounding Windows installation is healthy. Run SFC even when the file appears correctly signed.
If the file is present only in an application folder, do not overwrite it immediately. The program may be incorrectly shipping or expecting a private copy, or the error may actually concern a dependency.
Fix 5: Repair the affected printer, scanner, or WSD device
Use this step when the error began while adding or using a network printer, scanner, camera, or another WSD device.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category containing the affected device.
- Right-click the device and select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Allow Windows to detect the device again, or install the current driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Retry the device operation.
If the problem started immediately after a driver update:

- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if that button is available.
- Restart Windows and test again.

A printer may work through a standard TCP/IP port even when WSD discovery is failing. Changing the port type can be a device workaround, but it does not repair a damaged Windows component.
Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application normally uses the 32-bit Windows copy under SysWOW64. A 64-bit process normally uses the 64-bit copy under System32.
Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32, or a 64-bit file into SysWOW64. Architecture mismatches can produce “not designed to run on Windows” or load failures.

To identify an application’s architecture, check its documentation or ask the software vendor. You can also compare the program’s installation path and process details in Task Manager, but do not assume that every application installed under Program Files (x86) is the only possible cause.
If a 32-bit application fails while 64-bit Windows features work normally, repair the application and its device configuration as well as Windows. If multiple unrelated programs and devices fail, prioritize DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and malware checks.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for restoring or repairing Windows DLLs.
The relevant command would be:
regsvr32 dafwsd.dll
For DAFWSD, this is not an appropriate fix. Its documented exports include COM-related functions such as DllGetClassObject and DllCanUnloadNow, but not DllRegisterServer. Running the command may therefore produce an error stating that the entry point was not found.

Do not download dafwsd.dll from a random DLL website and place it in System32, SysWOW64, or the application directory. A replacement may:
- Contain malware or an unauthorized modification.
- Have the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Match an older Windows release.
- Overwrite a file managed by Windows servicing.
- Leave a missing dependency or damaged component store untouched.
- Hide the actual printer, scanner, update, or malware problem.
There is no identified standalone Microsoft “DAFWSD redistributable.” Safe recovery sources are Windows Update, Windows component repair, matching installation media, System Restore, an in-place Windows repair, and the affected hardware manufacturer’s official driver.

If the problem still remains
Use this escalation order:
- Test the same operation in another administrator account. If it works there, the original user profile or application configuration may be damaged.
- Review recent Windows updates and device-driver changes.
- Check antivirus quarantine and run a full or offline scan.
- Remove and reinstall the affected printer, scanner, or WSD device.
- Repeat DISM and SFC using matching installation media if necessary.
- Use System Restore if a restore point predates the problem.
- Perform an in-place Windows repair after backing up important data.
FAQ
Is dafwsd.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. dafwsd.dll is the Microsoft Windows DAF WSD Provider, not a normal Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET redistributable.

Is it safe?
A valid Microsoft signature and the expected Windows path support that the file is genuine. A signed file can still be damaged, and malware can replace or load files from unexpected locations, so verify the path and run system-integrity checks.
Should I download a new copy?
No. Restore the Windows component through Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, System Restore, or Windows repair.
Does the error always mean my printer is broken?
No. DAFWSD supports WSD devices, but the immediate cause may be Windows servicing, a missing dependency, antivirus quarantine, malware, or an application configuration problem.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
No. DAFWSD is not a general-purpose self-registering DLL, and regsvr32 is not a substitute for Windows component repair.

What is the safest first repair?
