These are distinct expansion contexts—not interchangeable destinations. There is an important story caveat: Blizzard’s February 25, 2026 returning-player guide says Dalaran was destroyed during The War Within. That later story status does not erase the earlier playable expansion experiences.
Which Dalaran should you visit?

There is no universally better version: the right one depends on the campaign or activity you have in mind.
What each version is for
Northrend: Wrath-era Dalaran
For Northrend exploration or Wrath content, use the Northrend version as your reference point. Blizzard’s Wrath Timewalking instructions, for example, direct the raid group to meet Vormu in Dalaran in Northrend before entering Ulduar. That is an event-specific example, not a permanent travel route or a current event schedule. Blizzard’s Wrath Timewalking article.
Broken Isles: Legion-era Dalaran
For Legion’s campaign context, the Broken Isles version is the relevant city. Blizzard’s Legion World Quests guide places Khadgar and the “Uniting the Isles” quest in Dalaran, illustrating the city’s role as a campaign hub. Blizzard’s Legion World Quests guide.

How to think about Dalaran’s current story status
Blizzard’s returning-player guide, published February 25, 2026, summarizes The War Within as including “the destruction of Dalaran.” That makes it misleading to describe Legion-era Dalaran as an unchanged city in the present-day story. When discussing the earlier expansion experience, call it “Legion-era Dalaran” or “the Broken Isles version”; distinguish that historical context from the later narrative. Does a portal or Hearthstone determine which version you reach?
Not by itself in a way established by the available official instructions. A portal, Hearthstone, quest, or event route may be tied to a campaign, event, faction, or character state; there is no single universally available route confirmed here. If you are trying to reach a particular version, check the destination and current quest instructions in game rather than assuming that every route labeled “Dalaran” leads to the same expansion context.

Blizzard documents specific cases, not a general travel rule: its Wrath Timewalking article sends players to Northrend Dalaran for that event, while its Radiant Echoes coverage describes Dalaran as a hub with portals during that event.
