A store closing does not necessarily erase games you already own. Sales can stop while downloads continue, and downloads can remain available after online play ends. But none of those services is guaranteed to last forever: the outcome depends on the platform, the game’s online requirements, and whether your access is a purchase or a subscription.
Three different things can end
“The store closed” can mean several different changes. Check which one an official notice describes:
- Sales end: you can no longer buy new games or other content through that store.
- Redownloads end: previous buyers can no longer retrieve a game or DLC from the platform after deleting it or needing a fresh copy.
- Game services end: multiplayer, account authentication, cloud features, user-generated content, or other online functions stop. In some games, server shutdown can prevent all play; in others, an offline campaign may remain playable.
These changes can happen on different dates. A sale-closure announcement alone does not tell you when downloads or a particular game’s services will end.
Will you lose games you already bought?
Not automatically on the day a store stops selling games. In some closures, the platform continues to let previous buyers download purchases. Nintendo has said Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games and DLC could be redownloaded “for the foreseeable future,” and Sony has used the same phrase for previously purchased PS3 and PS Vita content. Neither statement gives a permanent end date.

There is a historical counterexample: Nintendo’s Wii Shop Channel notice said that a later stage of its closure would also end redownloading WiiWare, Virtual Console titles, and Wii Channels. So continued access after sales stop is a platform-specific arrangement, not a rule you can assume will apply forever.
Access to a digital library is also distinct from owning a transferable copy of the game files. Keeping an installation on a drive does not transfer the account or license to another person or device. Keep access to the account associated with your purchases, and check the platform’s terms and notices for any conditions on playing them.

When can you still download games?
Look for a platform’s explicit redownload policy rather than inferring it from the date sales end. For example, Nintendo’s eShop closure FAQ says Wii U and 3DS buyers can redownload purchased games and DLC and receive software updates “for the foreseeable future.” Sony’s July 1, 2026 announcement says PS3 and PS Vita buyers can download previously purchased content after the relevant purchasing closure date, also “for the foreseeable future.” That wording is an assurance of continued access, not a schedule or a guarantee of permanence.
Older closures show why it matters to watch for a separate notice about downloads. Nintendo said the Wii Shop’s eventual service shutdown would include redownloads, so once that service ended, having bought a title did not mean the store would keep supplying another copy.

Closure dates and regions can change, so check the linked notices for the applicable country and the latest official terms. These examples also should not be treated as a promise about another platform: the sources cited here do not establish an Xbox store’s closure or redownload policy.
Can you play downloaded games offline?
Sometimes. A downloaded installation is not enough if the game needs a server, account check, or external launcher. Test the specific game rather than assuming that an offline mode works across your library.

Steam on PC
Steam Support says Offline Mode allows some games to run without an active Steam Network connection. Before relying on it, sign in online, finish updates, and launch each game at least once to discover additional setup or update requirements. Games that require an active connection or an external launcher may not work offline.
PlayStation 5
Sony says Console Sharing and Offline Play lets a user play purchased and downloaded games when the PS5 is offline. The setting must be enabled on the console. Find it under Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.

Games with their own online dependencies
A game may stop working, or lose specific features, when its publisher retires authentication, multiplayer, cloud, or other servers—even if the console store still works and the game remains installed. A single-player mode may survive only if the game supports it without those checks. Check notices from both the platform and the game’s publisher.

A game bought outright and a game accessed through a subscription do not necessarily have the same continuing entitlement. A subscription-catalog game can become unavailable if your membership lapses or the title leaves the catalog. On PS5, Sony’s purchased-content guidance advises checking that the membership is active and the game remains in the service catalog. Do not treat a subscription download as a permanent purchase.
Prepare your library before access changes
- Download games and DLC you care about while downloads are available. A sales deadline is not necessarily the downloads deadline, but do not rely on access continuing indefinitely.
- Install updates and launch games while online. On Steam, this helps reveal first-launch, update, connection, or external-launcher requirements before you need Offline Mode.
- Test offline play for each important game. Disconnect from the network only after the game is updated and configured, then confirm what still works.
- Check the entitlement and dependencies. Confirm whether each title is a purchase or subscription game, and whether it depends on a third-party account, launcher, or game server.
- Keep the purchasing account and associated device accessible. Stored files do not by themselves preserve or transfer a digital license.
- Back up saves separately where the platform permits it. A save file and a game license are different things; retaining one does not guarantee access to the other.
- Track notices at both the store and game level. A platform can keep selling games while one title’s servers shut down, or stop sales while downloads continue.
How to assess a specific store closure
For a useful answer about your own library, look up the official closure notice and check each of these separately:
- Are new purchases ending, or are redownloads also scheduled to end?
- How long does the platform say past purchases will remain downloadable? Is there a specific date, or only an open-ended phrase such as “for the foreseeable future”?
- Can the fully installed game run offline, including its first launch and any required account checks?
- Does the game require a subscription, third-party launcher, or publisher server?
- Which multiplayer and connected features will stop, and when?
- Can saves or installations be moved to another device, and what account or license limits apply?
Do not rank whole platforms by a single closure example. The relevant answer is the current policy for that store, plus the specific requirements of each game you want to keep playing.
