Recommended Danganronpa play order
- Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc — Begin here. It introduces the killing-game premise and Class Trials, and Spike Chunsoft identifies it as the series’ first entry. Spike Chunsoft’s game page.
- Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair — Play this second. NIS America describes it as the sequel to Trigger Happy Havoc. NIS America’s announcement.
- Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls — Play this after the first two if you want the story-bridging spin-off. Its protagonists are Komaru Naegi and Toko Fukawa, and its action-adventure format differs from the numbered mystery-adventure games. NIS America describes it as bridging the first two titles. NIS America’s announcement.
- Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony — Continue here after the earlier Hope’s Peak-related games. Spike Chunsoft frames V3 as a new world with a new cast. Spike Chunsoft’s V3 page.
This order follows the games’ release chronology and the publisher-described sequel and bridging relationships. It is the clearest choice for a first playthrough if you want the series’ developments to arrive in sequence.
Can you skip Ultra Despair Girls?
Yes. Ultra Despair Girls is a spin-off, not a numbered mainline installment. It is the connective story between Trigger Happy Havoc and Goodbye Despair, so it is worth playing if you want that additional context, but it is optional if your goal is to play the numbered games. After Goodbye Despair, you can move directly to V3: Killing Harmony.
What V3 means—and what it does not mean
Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony is a game with a new cast and “new world” framing. It is not Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak High School, which is an anime and is not part of the game order above. Keep the numeral and letter distinction in mind when searching for the next entry.
