The game is documented as having 10 levels. The reliable special-case advice is on level 6—collect the jet pack and gun, shoot the creature, then fly through the exit—and on levels 5, 8, 9 and 10, where community hints describe risky corner-jump warp zones. This guide keeps those tips separate from the later Risky Rescue sequel, whose controls and mechanics should not be assumed to apply here.
What this walkthrough covers
This is a guide to the original Dangerous Dave, particularly the PC/DOS version that John Romero’s creator-authored series history identifies as a port of his Apple II game. It is not a guide to Dangerous Dave in the Haunted Mansion or Dangerous Dave’s Risky Rescue; those are later, separate entries in the series.

The original game’s documented structure is straightforward but easy to misunderstand. Touching the door is not, by itself, the complete objective. The trophy is the gating item: collect it first, then use the exit. If Dave reaches the door without the trophy, you should not assume that the level is complete.

A fully authoritative, room-by-room route for all 10 levels is not established in the available documentation. The dependable information is the trophy-and-door objective, selected community hints for warp zones, and a specific level-6 sequence. The level sections below therefore distinguish confirmed instructions from cautious exploration advice rather than inventing platform layouts or enemy placements.

Original game or sequel? Check before using a control guide
Many online references combine the series under one title. That creates a serious walkthrough error: the keyboard chart found for Risky Rescue is explicitly for that sequel, not the original PC/DOS game. The following table shows why the distinction matters.
| Entry | Documented identity | What this guide can safely use |
|---|---|---|
| Dangerous Dave | Original game; the PC/DOS edition is described as a port of John Romero’s Apple II version and is dated to 1990 in his series history. | 10-level structure, trophy-then-door objective, and the documented community hints for levels 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10. |
| Dangerous Dave in the Haunted Mansion | Later, separate game. | Do not transfer routes, weapons or controls from it to the original. |
| Dangerous Dave’s Risky Rescue | Later, separate game with its own manual and mechanics. | Its control chart is useful only for identifying sequel-specific information, not for confirming original-game controls. |
The core route: trophy first, door second
- Explore enough of the stage to identify the trophy’s position. Do not commit to the exit simply because you have reached it early.
- Collect the trophy. Treat this pickup as the condition that makes the exit meaningful.
- Return to, or continue toward, the exit door. Use the safest known platform route rather than an untested corner jump.
- Finish through the door. If the stage does not advance, retrace the trophy route before trying a warp or assuming the game has crashed.
This loop is the most useful mental model for all 10 stages. It also prevents a common mistake: treating optional bonus travel as though it were the main route.
Level-by-level walkthrough
Level 1
The documented objective is the standard one: collect the trophy and reach the exit door. No level-1 shortcut or warp route is established by the cited material. Use this stage to confirm how your particular PC/DOS setup maps movement and jumping, then prioritize a safe return path after taking the trophy.

Level 2 has no separately verified secret route in the available guidance. Work from the trophy outward: identify which platforms connect the trophy area to the door before taking a risky leap. If you reach the door first, leave it as a landmark and continue searching for the required pickup.
Level 3
The same trophy gate applies. No special weapon, jet-pack sequence or warp is documented for this level, so avoid importing advice from Risky Rescue. A deliberate first pass—marking dead ends and safe landing points—reduces the chance of losing progress while returning from the trophy.

Level 4
No level-specific exploit is confirmed for level 4. The reliable route is simply the ordinary objective: locate the trophy, take it, and finish at the door. Treat any apparent gap beyond the normal playfield as unverified rather than assuming it is a secret passage.
Level 5
Level 5 is one of the stages for which a community hints page identifies a warp zone. The hint describes entering it by jumping from an upper corner, with the exact corner depending on the stage layout. The warp is presented as a bonus area with rewards and dangers, not as a required replacement for the trophy-and-door route.
Because technical documentation warns that apparent out-of-bounds behavior can be level-specific, try the normal route first. Only attempt the corner jump after you have secured the trophy or deliberately accepted the risk of being sent away from the finish.
Level 6
Level 6 has the clearest published sequence. Obtain the jet pack and the gun, shoot the creature, then go directly to the exit and fly through it. The order matters: the community hint places the weapon and jet-pack pickups before the creature encounter and the final flight.
The same hint warns against a particular upper-left warp attempt after this sequence because it can crash the game. That warning is community guidance, not an independently tested result, so avoid the upper-left experiment when your priority is completing the level. If the game becomes unstable after a corner jump, restart from a known-good state and use the direct jet-pack route instead.

Level 7
No dedicated warp, weapon order or shortcut is established for level 7. Follow the normal objective and keep the exit in mind as a return point. If a route appears to leave the intended playfield, regard it as experimental; the documented warp behavior is not presented as universal across all stages.
Level 8
Level 8 is also listed as having a community-described warp zone reached by jumping from an upper corner. It may lead to bonus rewards, but the guidance does not establish that it is necessary to collect the trophy or open the exit. Make a conventional trophy-and-door attempt before testing the warp.
Level 9
The community hints identify a warp zone on level 9, again accessed by an upper-corner jump. Exact corner behavior is layout-dependent in the available documentation. Save the normal route in your memory first, because a bonus area or an out-of-bounds transition may leave you without a reliable way back.
Level 10
Level 10 is the fourth stage specifically associated with a warp zone. The same upper-corner warning applies: it is an optional, potentially hazardous route rather than a confirmed requirement for the ending. Complete the trophy objective and use the door unless you are intentionally exploring for the bonus area.
Warp zones: what the hints actually establish
The community hints page names levels 5, 8, 9 and 10 and says to jump from an upper-left or upper-right corner. It describes these spaces as bonus zones that can contain rewards as well as dangers. It does not establish one universal corner, one universal reward, or a safe return route for every level.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Use the level’s geometry: the correct corner is not stated as identical across all four stages.
- Expect unusual movement: a corner jump may look out of bounds, but technical documentation treats such behavior as implementation-specific.
- Do not make the warp your first completion attempt: trophy first and door second remains the dependable route.
- Be ready to restart: especially on level 6, where an upper-left attempt is warned to be capable of crashing the game.
These are best treated as exploratory secrets, not guaranteed shortcuts. A warp that works on one level should not be copied mechanically onto another.
Controls: avoid importing the Risky Rescue manual
The located keyboard-control chart belongs to Dangerous Dave’s Risky Rescue. It lists the arrow keys for moving left and right, Ctrl for jumping, Ctrl plus Down for dropping from a platform or ladder, and Alt for shooting. It also discusses sequel-specific features such as triple-shot ammunition, red hats, doors, points and guards carrying hypodermic weapons.
None of those details verifies the original game’s controls or mechanics. If you are playing the PC/DOS original through an emulator or a port, check that release’s own keyboard configuration and do not assume that the sequel’s key bindings, ammunition or enemy behavior are present. In particular, the presence of a gun in the level-6 hint does not turn every Risky Rescue weapon rule into an original-game rule.

The door does nothing
Check the trophy. The documented objective requires both items in sequence: trophy first, exit door second. If you have only reached the door, continue exploring rather than repeatedly touching it.

A corner jump sends Dave somewhere strange
That may be the intended bonus warp, but the available technical guidance cautions that out-of-bounds behavior varies by level. Do not assume the same corner or recovery route works elsewhere. Return to the standard platform path if possible.

Level 6 crashes after experimentation
Use the published safe sequence instead: collect the jet pack and gun, shoot the creature, and fly straight through the exit. Specifically avoid the warned-about upper-left warp attempt, which the community hint says can crash the game.
The controls do not match a guide
Verify that the guide is for the original Dangerous Dave, not Risky Rescue. The sequel manual’s key chart and mechanics are not evidence for the PC/DOS original.
You are unsure whether a secret is required
Return to the primary rule. Unless a stage-specific hint says otherwise, the known completion condition is the trophy followed by the exit door. Warp zones on levels 5, 8, 9 and 10 are described as bonus areas, not mandatory objectives.

- Confirm that the title screen or emulator is running the original Dangerous Dave, not a sequel.
- For each of the 10 documented levels, locate the trophy before committing to the door.
- Use the normal route for levels without a verified special hint.
- On level 6, collect the jet pack and gun, shoot the creature, and fly through the exit.
- On levels 5, 8, 9 and 10, regard upper-corner jumps as optional warp experiments.
- Avoid the warned upper-left level-6 warp if you want to minimize crash risk.
- Do not transfer Risky Rescue controls, weapons or enemy rules to the original.
The Bottom Line
For the original 1990 Dangerous Dave, the dependable walkthrough is trophy first, exit door second across 10 levels. The only detailed stage sequence established here is level 6: get the jet pack and gun, shoot the creature, and fly through the exit. Warp zones on levels 5, 8, 9 and 10 are optional, community-documented corner jumps with level-specific risks.
