The essential path is Daredevil Seasons 1–3, followed by Spider-Man: No Way Home, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Echo and then Daredevil: Born Again. For the full Defenders-era story, add Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher at the points outlined below. Born Again continues Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk’s story rather than wiping it clean and starting over.
Where Daredevil sits in the MCU timeline
Daredevil occupies the street-level New York branch of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The chronological guide published by Hulu places the first season of Daredevil and the first season of Jessica Jones after I Am Groot Season 2 and before Avengers: Age of Ultron. That position puts Matt Murdock’s early cases in the MCU before the events that reshape the wider Avengers story.

The shows do not function as an isolated alternate universe. Their New York is the same setting affected by MCU events, but the stories concentrate on neighborhood crime, corruption, vigilantism and the consequences for ordinary residents. That is why the early seasons can be watched without pausing for every Avengers film while still fitting into the larger chronology.

The early placement: Season 1
Daredevil Season 1 is the starting point for Matt’s on-screen arc: he is a blind lawyer by day and a masked vigilante by night, and Wilson Fisk is the central criminal power he is trying to expose. Jessica Jones Season 1 belongs in the same broad pre-Age of Ultron period. Watching both gives a view of the street-level world before the characters begin crossing into a shared team story.
Season 2 and the road to The Defenders
Hulu’s sequence places Daredevil Season 2 before Luke Cage Season 1, Iron Fist Season 1 and The Defenders. This is the practical hinge in the timeline. Matt’s second solo season introduces conflicts and relationships that become important when Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Danny Rand have to work together.
The Defenders is therefore not an optional side story if you want every transition in Matt’s personal life to make sense. It is the crossover between Daredevil Seasons 2 and 3, and its ending directly affects the condition in which Matt begins the third season.
The later Defenders-era run and Season 3
After The Defenders, Hulu’s chronology places Jessica Jones Season 2, Luke Cage Season 2 and Iron Fist Season 2 before Daredevil Season 3. The guide then places Season 3 before Thor: Ragnarok and The Punisher Season 2. This makes Season 3 the closing chapter of the original solo Daredevil run, while the surrounding series fill out the world in which Matt and Fisk’s conflict began.
| Story point | Chronological position | Connection to Daredevil |
|---|---|---|
| Daredevil Season 1 | After I Am Groot Season 2; before Avengers: Age of Ultron | Introduces Matt Murdock, Wilson Fisk and the street-level New York setting |
| Daredevil Season 2 | Before Luke Cage Season 1 and Iron Fist Season 1 | Sets up the crossover and expands Matt’s alliances and enemies |
| The Defenders | After Luke Cage Season 1 and Iron Fist Season 1; before Daredevil Season 3 | Direct bridge between Matt’s second and third solo seasons |
| Daredevil Season 3 | After Jessica Jones Season 2, Luke Cage Season 2 and Iron Fist Season 2 | Concludes the original solo-series arc |
What to watch before Daredevil: Born Again
There are two sensible routes. The first follows Matt almost exclusively and takes you through the appearances that lead directly into Born Again. The second preserves the ensemble continuity around The Defenders.
Minimum coherent Daredevil route
- Daredevil Season 1: establishes Matt, Fisk and the moral rules that govern their conflict.
- Daredevil Season 2: expands Matt’s personal and superhero relationships and leads into the crossover.
- Daredevil Season 3: completes the original solo arc. If you skip The Defenders, some of the circumstances at the start of this season will arrive without their full context.
- Spider-Man: No Way Home: marks Matt’s return in the modern MCU after the Defenders-era shows.
- She-Hulk: Attorney at Law: shows another side of Matt’s work as a lawyer and his place among newer MCU heroes.
- Echo: brings the street-level crime network and Wilson Fisk back into the immediate lead-up to Born Again.
- Daredevil: Born Again: continues Matt and Fisk’s story in the current MCU timeline.
This route gives you the essential Matt–Fisk relationship and every later appearance that the available chronology identifies as leading into Born Again. It is the best choice when your priority is Daredevil rather than the entire ensemble.

Complete Defenders-era route
For the surrounding character context, start with Daredevil Seasons 1 and 2, then watch Jessica Jones Season 1, Luke Cage Season 1 and Iron Fist Season 1 before The Defenders. Continue with Jessica Jones Season 2, Luke Cage Season 2 and Iron Fist Season 2, then watch Daredevil Season 3. Hulu’s chronological list also includes The Punisher Season 1 and the later Defenders-era seasons; use that list when you want every series rather than only the titles that directly move Matt’s plot.
The complete route takes substantially longer, but it explains why the four heroes recognize one another, how the New York criminal ecosystem develops and why the events of The Defenders matter to Matt’s next solo chapter. It is the better option if ensemble continuity matters as much as Daredevil’s individual story.
| Watch-order option | Time commitment | Context you receive | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum route | Three Daredevil seasons plus three MCU appearances and Born Again | Clear Matt–Fisk continuity and the direct MCU re-entry | Viewers focused on Matt Murdock and his later cameos |
| Complete route | Minimum route plus the Defenders-era companion seasons | The ensemble setup, crossover relationships and wider street-level world | Viewers who want the full shared-series story |
Do you need to watch The Defenders?
No, it is not mandatory to follow the basic plot of Born Again; yes, it is the most useful missing chapter if you want the original continuity to flow cleanly. The crossover sits between Daredevil Seasons 2 and 3, so skipping it removes the explanation for major changes in Matt’s circumstances before Season 3. It also removes the ensemble context for Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
If you are short on time, watch the three Daredevil seasons in order and then proceed to No Way Home, She-Hulk, Echo and Born Again. If Season 3’s opening feels abrupt, return to The Defenders; that is the one crossover most directly tied to Matt’s solo storyline.
How Born Again fits the earlier series
Disney describes Born Again as a continuation of Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Wilson Fisk/Kingpin’s story, with Karen Page, Foggy Nelson and Frank Castle returning. That description supports treating the series as a continuation integrated into the current MCU calendar, not as a clean reboot that discards the earlier seasons.
Rank #3
Vincent D’Onofrio has described the project as “essentially season 4” in all but name. Charlie Cox has estimated that the main story takes place roughly six years after Daredevil Season 3. Those comments explain why the series can acknowledge the original run while presenting a Matt who has moved into a later stage of his life and career.

That placement is approximate rather than a formally stated single calendar year, so it is safer to think of the show as occurring in the MCU’s post-Echo period than to attach every episode to a precise date.
Matt’s MCU re-entry
Spider-Man: No Way Home is the first listed modern re-entry point, followed by She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Echo. The appearances are different in tone, but together they establish that Matt is active in the wider MCU again before Born Again begins. Watching them in that order prevents the common mistake of treating Born Again as the first time the character returns after Season 3.

Wilson Fisk is the thread that connects the original series to the new political conflict. In the earlier run he is the criminal force behind New York’s corruption and Matt’s defining enemy. In Born Again Season 2, Disney’s description says Fisk has been elected mayor of New York City and has outlawed vigilantism. Daredevil must therefore operate against an anti-vigilante campaign backed by the city’s formal authority, not merely against an underground criminal organization.
That escalation changes the central question. The conflict is no longer only whether Matt can expose Fisk’s crimes; it is whether a public office can be used to define Daredevil as the criminal. Sana Amanat, an executive producer, summarized the continuing focus by saying, “Every great Daredevil story is ultimately a great Kingpin story.” Dario Scardapane, the showrunner, described the characters as reaching decisions that force them to choose a side and pay a price. Those statements frame the new chapters as a continuation of the Matt–Fisk moral contest, now operating through law, elections and public policy as well as violence.

What the timeline means for new viewers
- The original seasons still matter: Matt’s history with Fisk and the relationships around Nelson, Murdock & Page are the foundation for the continuation.
- The crossover has a precise home: place The Defenders after Daredevil Season 2 and before Season 3.
- The MCU cameos are sequential: watch No Way Home, then She-Hulk, then Echo before Born Again.
- The calendar is approximate: the strongest current placement is a 2025 prologue and a main story around 2026–2027, not a definitive single-year label.
- The conflict expands rather than resets: Fisk’s move into the mayor’s office turns the old street-level rivalry into an anti-vigilante political campaign.
A practical viewing plan
Choose the minimum route if you want to reach Born Again with the least preparation while retaining the essential continuity. Choose the complete route if you want to understand the Defenders as a team and see how the neighboring shows build the New York corner of the MCU. In either case, keep the order of the three modern appearances intact: No Way Home, She-Hulk, then Echo. The result is a timeline that begins with Matt’s first fight against Fisk, passes through the Defenders crossover and the original Season 3 conclusion, and arrives at a continuation where the same rivalry has become a struggle over who controls New York’s definition of justice.
