Navi frames it with the instruction “Conquer yourself!” Dark Link copies Link’s movement patterns, blocks ordinary attacks, punishes predictable swordplay, and becomes more aggressive as his body turns opaque. He is not given a substantial spoken origin, so the game clearly establishes his role and behavior but leaves the literal nature of his “shadow” open to interpretation.
Who Dark Link is
Dark Link appears halfway through the Water Temple, the sixth dungeon in Ocarina of Time. He is the temple’s mini-boss, while Morpha is the dungeon’s main boss. The encounter takes place in a broad, shallow-water arena reached during the temple’s central progression. When Link approaches the water, his reflection separates from the surface and takes physical form as a hostile duplicate.

That origin makes Dark Link different from a normal monster. He is not introduced with a long cutscene, a named faction, or a detailed biography. Zelda Wiki describes him as enigmatic and generally without backstory or dialogue. What the game demonstrates directly is more important than any later theory: he is an evil reflection/doppelgänger, he is created from Link’s reflection, and he is placed in the Water Temple to block the route to the Longshot.

The battle’s framing is explicit. Navi’s prompt, “Conquer yourself!”, presents Dark Link as a self-confrontation. That wording supports a symbolic reading, but it does not prove that the dungeon is literally a psychological test or that Dark Link is made of a particular kind of shadow magic. Those ideas are interpretations rather than stated plot facts.

Why Dark Link is in the Water Temple
The Water Temple repeatedly uses reflections, submerged rooms, changing water levels, and hidden routes. Dark Link’s appearance from the water extends that visual language into the combat design. The room turns a familiar image—Link looking at himself—into an opponent that knows the same movement vocabulary.
From a progression standpoint, Dark Link is a gatekeeper. Defeating him opens the room that contains the Longshot, an upgraded hookshot that lets Link reach farther targets and traverse later sections of the temple. The fight is therefore mandatory for normal completion, not an optional challenge tucked away for extra rewards. After the Longshot, the dungeon continues toward Morpha; completing the Water Temple ultimately provides the Heart Container and Water Medallion associated with the dungeon.
How the Dark Link fight works
Dark Link’s behavior is built around imitation and defense rather than a large health bar or a complicated phase script. He reacts to most of Link’s attacks and movements, often raising his defenses instead of standing still to be hit. Understanding those reactions is more useful than repeatedly swinging the sword and hoping for an opening.

The transparency change is both visual feedback and a warning. Early in the encounter, Dark Link can seem passive because his body is difficult to see and his attacks are less active. As he becomes solid, give him less room to dictate the pace. Keep Link positioned so a rear reappearance does not immediately lead to an unprotected hit.

What Dark Link is weak to
The most clearly documented counters are the Megaton Hammer, Din’s Fire, and sword attacks used with care. Deku Nuts and Biggoron’s Sword are additional documented options. The game does not present a menu that labels one universal weakness, and different releases, controller setups, or challenge rules can make a tactic easier or harder to execute. Treat the following as practical methods rather than a single mandatory sequence.
Megaton Hammer
The Megaton Hammer is useful because it changes the normal sword duel. Dark Link’s defensive behavior is designed around Link’s common sword motions; the hammer gives you a different timing and attack shape. Strike when you have space and avoid chasing him immediately after he disappears. The hammer is especially valuable for players who find repeated sword thrusts being countered.
Din’s Fire
Din’s Fire is described as reliable when Dark Link is within range. Move close enough for the area attack to encompass him, cast it, and be ready for his reappearance rather than assuming the spell ends the fight instantly. Magic is limited, so count your casts and use the spell when Dark Link is clearly in range instead of firing from across the room.
Deku Nuts
Deku Nuts are another documented tool. Their value is in creating a brief opening without committing Link to a long sword animation. Use one when Dark Link is approaching or has just appeared, then follow with the attack you can land consistently. Because item timing and results can vary with position, do not treat a single failed throw as proof that the item is useless.

Biggoron’s Sword
Biggoron’s Sword is listed as a practical option and gives Link a stronger two-handed blade. Its reach and damage can shorten the exchange, but Link gives up the shield while it is equipped. That trade-off matters: if you are taking frequent hits, a theoretically stronger weapon may be less effective than a safer method you can control.
Careful sword attacks
Normal swordplay still works, but it is the most direct test of the encounter’s imitation mechanic. Horizontal slashes can connect when timed around Dark Link’s defense. A sword thrust is specifically dangerous as a habit because Dark Link can hop onto the blade, countering the attack. Vary the timing, watch his stance, and stop swinging when he is already set to block.
A step-by-step plan for defeating Dark Link
- Enter with resources prepared. Bring enough health, magic, and the equipment you intend to use. If you rely on Din’s Fire, verify that your magic meter can support several attempts. If you prefer a weapon solution, equip the Megaton Hammer or have Biggoron’s Sword available before entering the arena.
- Watch the opening seconds. Dark Link starts nearly transparent. Do not rush into blind swings. Track where his outline is and learn how quickly he closes distance.
- Keep moving without circling blindly. His ability to reappear behind Link makes a stationary attack pattern risky. Move in short, deliberate adjustments so you can turn toward him after a disappearance.
- Choose one primary counter. Use the Megaton Hammer for a changed timing profile, Din’s Fire when he is in range, or controlled sword attacks if you are comfortable reading his defense. Switching constantly between items can create more mistakes than it prevents.
- Avoid predictable thrusts. Since Dark Link can hop onto a sword thrust, favor attacks and timings that do not give him the same response every time.
- Punish an opening, then reset. After a hit, Dark Link may fall through the floor and appear behind Link. Turn, re-establish your position, and wait for the next safe attack instead of continuing a long animation.
- Adjust as he becomes opaque. Once Dark Link is fully visible, expect more active attacks. Shorten your attack commitment, maintain awareness of the rear of the arena, and use your chosen counter when he enters its effective range.
- Confirm the route forward. Victory opens the room containing the Longshot. Collect it before leaving, because it is the progression reward that allows the Water Temple’s next traversal challenges.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Trying to win with repeated thrusts
A thrust looks efficient, but Dark Link’s ability to hop onto the blade makes repeating it a trap. Replace the loop with varied timing or use the Megaton Hammer, Din’s Fire, or another documented option.

Standing still after a successful hit
A hit is not the end of the exchange. Dark Link can drop through the floor and reappear behind Link. Turn immediately and keep enough room to respond.

Attacking while he is already defending
Dark Link reacts to Link’s movements and often blocks. If he is visibly set against your attack, stop spending animations into his guard. Reposition and wait for a moment when your chosen attack can connect.
Ignoring the transparency change
The transition from nearly transparent to opaque is not merely cosmetic. It signals that Dark Link will attack more actively. If the early portion felt easy, do not keep the same pace once he becomes fully visible.
Assuming every tactic behaves identically in every version
The documented material establishes several counters but does not rank them for every release, controller layout, or challenge run. If one item feels inconsistent, switch to another listed method rather than treating a single failed attempt as a universal rule.
Is Dark Link Link’s shadow or an evil twin?
“Evil reflection” and “doppelgänger” are the safest descriptions because they match what the game shows. Dark Link comes from Link’s reflection, mirrors Link’s movements, and fights as a hostile counterpart. The game does not provide a substantial spoken explanation that settles whether he is literally Link’s shadow, a magically generated copy, or an independent being created by the temple.

That distinction matters when separating canon from symbolism. Navi’s “Conquer yourself!” line clearly encourages the self-confrontation reading. The water, reflection, and imitation reinforce it. However, calling the arena a confirmed psychological trial, or stating that Dark Link is definitely composed of shadow magic, goes beyond the explicit information supplied by the encounter. Those are reasonable interpretations, not established biography.
What the fight contributes to Ocarina of Time
Dark Link is memorable because the mechanics express the story idea. A normal enemy asks you to learn its pattern; Dark Link asks you to notice your own pattern. If you always thrust, he has a response. If you stand in one place, his reappearance punishes it. If you rely on a single familiar sword rhythm, his defense exposes that habit. The encounter turns Link’s control scheme into the subject of the boss design.
It also provides a clean midpoint reward. The Longshot gained after the fight is not decorative loot: it expands Link’s traversal range and is required for the Water Temple’s later rooms. The mini-boss therefore combines narrative reflection, a distinct combat lesson, and a concrete progression unlock in one room.

Players who want room-by-room Water Temple navigation can use an Ocarina of Time strategy guide. The official Prima Games guide is described as a physical book with a complete walkthrough, dungeon maps, and screenshots, making it useful when the temple’s water-level routing is causing as much trouble as the mini-boss. A guide can show the route to the arena and the Longshot room, but the combat solution still depends on reading Dark Link’s reactions and choosing the counter you can execute reliably.
