First, identify the game. This walkthrough covers the classic Datasoft parser adventure Dark Lord, associated with Kyle Freeman and released for Apple and Commodore computers. It is not the separate free-to-play roguelike RPG with the same title released in 2024. The classic game expects you to type commands, inspect scenery, combine objects and solve timed hazards.
Use the mini-adventure for a spoiler-light tutorial, then follow the clearly labeled full route for the easy Commodore 64 version. The full route comes from a historical walkthrough and is not an independently tested modern emulation guide; room layouts and object locations can differ on other platforms or in Random mode.

| Easier | Reduced challenge compared with Normal. | Recommended for a first complete run and the mode used for the archived Commodore 64 route below. |
| Normal | The standard puzzle difficulty. | Choose this when you want the intended challenge and are willing to experiment more. |
| Random | Items are scattered differently. Puzzle logic still applies, but a fixed location or sequence from a map may not. | Replay value after you understand the item relationships. |
The manual documents Apple II and Commodore 64/128 editions. Treat the detailed route in this article as a C64 easy-mode reference, not a universal map.

Parser commands and movement that prevent avoidable deaths
Dark Lord accepts short, direct commands for examining, collecting, speaking, using objects and moving. When a puzzle does not respond, change the verb before assuming the puzzle is broken.
- Observe: use
LOOKto inspect a room andLOOK GROUNDto find objects that are easy to miss. - Inventory: type
INVENTORYregularly. Several solutions require an object you picked up earlier, and the game may not repeat its description. - Examine: try
EXAMINE MIRROR,EXAMINE POOLor the equivalent noun-focused wording. - Objects: use commands such as
TAKE BOWL,FILL BOWL,THROW SLIME,GIVE FISHandWEAR AMULET. Exact parser phrasing can vary by edition. - Save and restore: the manual supports
SAVE GAMEandLOAD GAME. Save before entering a timed area, crossing lava or testing a new item combination.
Compass directions (north, south, east and west) are not the same as relative commands (forward, back, left, right, up and down). The manual’s warning is worth treating literally: “BACK moves you away from what you’re facing, but not necessarily back to where you came from!” If you turn before using BACK, you may move into a different room than the one you expect.
Mini-adventure: a low-spoiler practice route
The manual recommends trying this short scenario before the main adventure. It teaches the game’s central pattern: inspect an area, collect a container, combine it with a substance, then use the result on a creature or mechanism. This is a tutorial-sized adventure, not a solution to the entire game.

1. Reach the clearing and inspect the pool
- From the forest, go north.
- Go right into the clearing.
- Examine the pool. You are looking for a usable substance, not merely a scenic description.
- Go north to the temple structure and take the bowl.
2. Make the slime weapon
- Return to the pool.
- Fill the bowl with slime.
- Check your inventory so you know the filled bowl is present before leaving.
3. Enter the redwood and deal with the worm
- Go south into the forest.
- Enter the opening in the redwood.
- Continue into the cave.
- When the worm blocks the route, throw the slime at it. Do not waste turns trying unrelated weapons; the filled bowl is the intended solution.
- Take the torch once the way is clear.
4. Light the altar
- Follow the passages toward the temple.
- At the altar, identify the indentation or lighting point.
- Use the torch on the indentation to complete the mini-adventure.
If this sequence works, you have learned the important rhythm for the main game: objects often become useful only after being filled, worn, lit, thrown or shown to the correct character.

Full walkthrough: easy Commodore 64 route
The following route is based on Dorothy Millard’s Solution Archive walkthrough for the easy C64 version. It starts in a hidden room beneath the house you inherit. The archive route is a dependency guide: it identifies which objects unlock later events, while your exact room wording or compass directions may vary by edition. In Random mode, use the objectives and item relationships rather than the assumed locations.
1. Investigate the hidden room and the mirror
- Begin in the hidden room beneath the inherited house.
- Examine the mirror. The mirror is an entrance, not just scenery.
- Enter the mirror.
- Take the scarab. Keep it in your inventory; it is needed much later at the island door.
Whenever the parser says an object has a special property, note it immediately. The scarab’s purpose is not obvious at this point, but discarding or overlooking it blocks the island section.
2. Accept the villager’s request
- Find and speak with the villager.
- Accept the request to find Krin.
- Take the carved stick offered or revealed during this exchange.
The stick is a proof-of-identity item. You do not solve Krin’s section by guessing a direction; you solve it by showing the correct object after reaching him.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. Catch a fish and obtain the scroll
- Go to the stream and catch a fish.
- Carry the fish to the man at the boathouse.
- Give him the fish. He gives you a scroll.
- Read the scroll before leaving. Its information matters for the next travel dependency.
Keep the fish-related objective separate from the later cat encounter: the fish you carry is required to obtain the skull, so do not give it to an unrelated character or leave it somewhere inaccessible.

4. Record the wind at the dock
- Go to the dock.
- Observe the wind and remember its direction or condition.
Flight from the dock depends on those gusts. If you attempt the island crossing without paying attention to the wind, the game may refuse the action or send you the wrong way. This is one of the route’s environmental prerequisites rather than an inventory puzzle.
5. Prepare the descent to Krin
- Enter the storehouse and take the rat and the rope.
- At the trench, collect the pearl blossom.
- Tie the rope to the tree.
- Climb down into the trench.
- Show the carved stick to Krin.
The rope must be secured before you climb. If the game rejects a descent, inspect the tree and repeat the tie action rather than trying to jump or use the rope on yourself.
6. Eat the pearl blossom to gain flight
Eat the pearl blossom. This grants the ability to fly. The blossom is not a gift to Krin and should not be combined with the flask, lamp or rope. Once flight is available, return to the windy dock and use the wind observation from step 4 to make the crossing.
7. Reach the island before the door closes
- Return to the dock where you observed the wind.
- Use your new flight ability to reach the island.
- At the island door, insert the scarab into the door’s indentation.
- Move through immediately. The door closes, so do not stop to examine unrelated scenery between inserting the scarab and entering.
This is the first clear act-before-the-window-closes puzzle. Save before the crossing if you have not already done so.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
8. Trade the fish for the skull
- Find the island’s cat.
- Give the cat the fish.
- Take the skull the cat leaves or reveals.
- Proceed to the burial chamber.
- Collect the amulet and wear it.
“Take” and “wear” are separate actions. Possessing the amulet without wearing it does not satisfy the later guard encounter.
9. Cross the thorn, lava and foot-protection sequence
The next area is a chain of item combinations. Complete the steps in this order:
- Obtain water in the flask.
- Use the lamp to burn the thorny bush.
- Take the waxy leaf exposed by the cleared bush.
- Rub the waxy leaf on your feet. This prepares you for the heated ground.
- Pour the flask’s water on the lava.
- Jump across while the lava is cool. It reheats, so do not pause after pouring.
If the parser reports that your feet are unprotected, the waxy leaf has not been applied. If the lava burns you despite having water, you waited too long after pouring; reload and make the jump immediately.

11. Solve the castle entrance and final chamber
- At the castle, use or present the worn amulet against the guard. The amulet is the protection that makes this encounter possible.
- Move the torch to reveal a hidden passage.
- Use the rat in the lattice. This opens access to the concealed area.
- Retrieve the crystal.
- At the final confrontation, throw the skull at the Dark Lord.
The final sequence uses objects gathered much earlier, so check INVENTORY before entering the castle. If an interaction fails, verify that the amulet is worn rather than merely carried and that you are using the rat on the lattice, not throwing it at the guard.
How to use hints without spoiling every solution
Need only a nudge?
- Look at the room, then look at the ground before moving on.
- Ask what object could change the state of the obstacle: a filled bowl for a creature, a lamp for a bush, water for lava.
- When a character asks for help, search your inventory for an item that proves identity or satisfies a trade.
- At a door, altar or indentation, try inserting or placing an object rather than simply examining it.
Stuck after an apparently correct action?
- Confirm the item is actually in your inventory and has the required state: filled, lit, worn or combined.
- Repeat the observation command. Some clues appear only after you inspect the relevant object.
- Check orientation before using
BACK; it is relative to the direction you face. - Reload a save made before a timed event, especially the island door and the lava crossing.
What changes in other versions and Random mode
The mini-adventure’s puzzle logic is the most portable part of the guide. The full route is tied to the easy Commodore 64 walkthrough, while the manual covers Apple II and Commodore 64/128 releases. Text, room labels and command vocabulary can differ. Random mode deliberately moves items, so “the object is in this room” is not a reliable rule there.
Use the route as a dependency checklist: scarab opens the island door; fish produces the skull through the cat; the amulet handles the guard; the torch reveals the castle passage; the rat works on the lattice; and the skull is used against the Dark Lord. If those relationships remain intact, exploration can replace an exact map.
Quick checklist before the final confrontation
- You have read the scroll from the boathouse man.
- You have observed the wind at the dock and used the pearl blossom to gain flight.
- The scarab has opened the island door and you entered before it closed.
- The cat has received the fish and given you the skull.
- You collected and wore the amulet.
- You completed the flask, lamp, waxy leaf and lava sequence.
- You used the axe on the winged monster.
- You know where the torch, rat and crystal are for the castle sequence.
That checklist catches the most common backtracking mistakes without revealing a different route for editions whose item placement has changed.
