There is no single best weapon for every Dark Souls II character. Choose one that meets your stats, suits your build and preferred moveset, and can be upgraded along a path that fits your needs. Before committing, compare its requirements, damage type, scaling, weight, durability, and item-specific upgrade information—not just the attack rating shown in your inventory.
What are the best weapons in Dark Souls 2?
The best weapon for you is the one you can wield effectively and that complements your character. A high displayed attack rating is not enough to settle the choice: requirements, damage type, scaling, moveset, reach, weight, durability, and upgrade options all matter. The community-maintained Dark Souls II weapon list is useful for comparing listed statistics across weapons, while the individual item page is where to check that weapon’s upgrade details.
Use the list to narrow your options, then verify the details for the particular weapon and game edition you play. The reference material does not establish a universal winner or provide patch-specific balance rankings, so a context-free “best weapon” list would imply more certainty than the available comparisons support.
What weapon should I use for a strength or dexterity build?
Start with the stats you have—or realistically plan to raise—and compare candidate weapons’ requirements and scaling. A weapon that appears strong on paper may perform poorly if you do not meet its requirements. The wiki warns that an unmet stat requirement makes attacks noticeably slower and deals significantly less damage.

Strength-focused characters
Look for weapons whose requirements and scaling fit your Strength investment, then consider whether their damage type, weight, durability, and moveset work for your play style. Two-handing halves a weapon’s Strength requirement, which can make a weapon usable earlier or with less Strength investment. This does not remove other stat requirements.
Dexterity-focused characters
Compare the weapon’s Dexterity requirement and scaling alongside its damage type and moveset. Scaling letters are only shorthand: the percentage ranges behind a letter can vary widely, and the letters may be unreliable, particularly for weapons with multiple infusions. Do not treat a higher letter as a complete damage comparison.

Characters using both hands or two weapons
Two-handing can help meet a Strength requirement, but it is different from Power Stance. Compatible weapons can use Power Stance when the character meets the relevant requirements; check the specific weapon and requirements before building around it.
How should you compare weapons?
Use the sortable weapon list as a starting point, not as a verdict. Compare the fields that affect whether a weapon works for your character and situation:

- Requirements and build fit: Confirm every required stat and assess whether its scaling suits your investment.
- Attack and damage type: Consider physical and elemental attack values, and check the damage type rather than relying on a single total.
- Moveset and reach: Check the individual weapon page or gameplay footage for attack patterns and reach; a table of numbers cannot establish how a moveset feels to use.
- Weight and durability: These affect equipment choices and how often you may need to repair the weapon.
- Poise damage and counter strength: Use these listed values as additional comparison points, not substitutes for requirements or moveset.
- Acquisition and upgrade path: Check when and how you can obtain the weapon, which materials it needs, and what its item-specific upgrade or infusion chart shows.
- Intended use: A weapon that suits one build or situation may not suit another. The available references do not provide a verified, patch-specific PvE or PvP ranking.
How do weapon scaling and infusions work?
Scaling describes how a weapon’s damage can benefit from character stats, but the displayed letter is an imprecise guide to the amount of that benefit. The Attack Rating reference cautions that the percentage ranges represented by letters vary and that letters can be especially unreliable with multiple infusions. Compare the full weapon details and your character’s build rather than ranking weapons by letter alone.
Infusions can change a weapon’s attack rating, damage elements, blocking, or status effects. Those changes can alter how the weapon fits your build, so inspect the specific weapon’s infusion chart before deciding. Do not assume that an infusion is a simple damage increase or that it preserves every weapon characteristic.
Where to infuse weapons
Steady Hand McDuff performs infusions after you give him the Dull Ember. Its location depends on the edition:
- Original release (DX9): The cited infusion reference places the Dull Ember in Iron Keep.
- Scholar of the First Sin (DX11): The cited infusion reference places the Dull Ember in Lost Bastille.
Check your edition before following a route; the two locations are not interchangeable directions.
How should you choose an upgrade path?
- Shortlist weapons that meet your requirements. Include two-handing only when it applies to the Strength requirement; verify any other requirements separately.
- Compare the complete weapon profile. Review attack values, damage type, scaling, weight, durability, poise damage, counter strength, and the moveset and reach information available for that weapon.
- Open the individual weapon page. The broad list is a comparison reference; use the item-specific page and its upgrade or infusion chart for the actual path and materials.
- Match the path to your build. Infusions may change more than attack rating, so check their effects against your stats and intended use before committing.
- Confirm edition-specific directions. If the route involves the Dull Ember, distinguish the original DX9 release from Scholar of the First Sin (DX11).
Which version of Dark Souls 2 are these directions for?
Dark Souls II and Scholar of the First Sin are distinct editions, and the cited infusion reference gives different Dull Ember locations for the original release and Scholar. The cited overview describes Scholar of the First Sin as an enhanced edition and reports its retail release on PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. That historical release information does not establish current store availability or compatibility for a particular copy. The weapon and infusion references are community-maintained wikis, so verify high-impact choices against the item page for your edition.
