Darnell Washington Fantasy Outlook: How to Evaluate His Role After a Touchdown

Washington’s Week 4 touchdown makes him worth watching, but his receiving role needs to grow before he becomes a reliable fantasy option.

Darnell Washington’s Week 4 touchdown is worth monitoring, but one score does not establish a new fantasy role. The Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2026 season split lists him with 9 receptions, 119 yards and 1 touchdown through Week 4. For now, he is a watch-list option or a consideration in deeper leagues—not a proven weekly starter.

What changed with Washington’s Week 4 touchdown?

Washington caught 3 passes for 27 yards and a touchdown in Week 4. In the three September games before it, he recorded 2 catches for 18 yards, 1 catch for 7 yards and 3 catches for 67 yards, with no touchdowns. The Steelers’ current 2026 split totals those games at 9 receptions, 119 yards, a 13.22-yard average and 1 touchdown. Pittsburgh’s 2026 statistics include the Week 4 result; NFL.com’s game log corroborates the game-by-game line.

The score changes his season scoring total, not necessarily his standing in the offense. A touchdown is a single event; a stronger fantasy signal would be a continuing increase in targets and receiving production over multiple games.

Is Washington fantasy relevant after the touchdown?

He is worth monitoring, especially in deeper leagues, but the available production does not make him a dependable standard-format starter. His receiving numbers have grown year over year: the Steelers list 7 receptions for 61 yards in 2023, 19 for 200 yards and 1 touchdown in 2024, then 31 for 364 yards and 1 touchdown in 2025. The progression shows more involvement through 2025, while the low touchdown totals caution against projecting regular scoring from one 2026 touchdown. The Steelers’ player profile lists those season totals.

For a clearly attributed forecast rather than a result, FanDuel Research reports a numberFire 2026 projection of 51.9 fantasy points and a tight end rank of 28. That is a projection, not a guarantee or evidence that his role has already changed. FanDuel Research’s 2026 outlook provides the comparison and projection.

Does Washington’s Steelers role mean more fantasy points?

Not automatically. Pittsburgh highlights Washington as a key blocker in its tush-push play and describes his contribution as extending beyond the receiving box score. That can make him valuable to the team without producing the targets, catches or yards needed for consistent fantasy scoring. The Steelers’ June 4, 2026 contract announcement discusses that broader role.

His receiving production also trails teammate Pat Freiermuth’s in FanDuel Research’s 2025 comparison:

2025 receiving stat Darnell Washington Pat Freiermuth
Targets 43 54
Receptions 31 41
Receiving yards 364 486
Touchdowns 1 4
Red-zone targets 8 9

Those figures describe 2025, not a 2026 depth-chart forecast. They show why Washington’s blocking value and one scoring play should not be mistaken for evidence that he has taken over the Steelers’ receiving role.

What should fantasy managers watch next?

  • Targets and catches: Look for sustained growth in opportunity and receptions, not just a repeat touchdown.
  • Receiving involvement: Track routes or snaps if reliable current data becomes available; the cited sources do not establish his current route or snap share.
  • Red-zone opportunities: A continuing stream of red-zone targets would be more informative than one converted chance.
  • Competition: Compare his role and recent production with Freiermuth and the other tight ends available to you.
  • League context: A deep league or TE-premium format can make a developing option more useful than a standard lineup does.

When comparing Washington with a waiver option, weigh recent targets and catches, receiving involvement, red-zone chances and touchdown dependence together. Without your league format and alternatives, a categorical add or start recommendation would be misleading.
