There is no universal number of goalie starts to target each week. Check your league’s minimum appearance requirement, any games-played cap, lineup lock rules and scoring categories; then secure the minimum with likely appearances before weighing extra starts against the risk to save percentage and goals-against average.
How many goalie starts do you need this week?
Start by finding your league’s minimum goalie appearances—not by assuming a standard target. A goalie appearance is not always the same as a scheduled team game: Yahoo says the goalie must officially touch the ice while in an active position to count. A goalie merely rostered during a game does not guarantee an appearance. Yahoo’s minimum goalie appearances guidance
After you know the minimum, estimate which rostered goalies are likely to play before your lineup locks. Allow for uncertainty in projected starters, and aim for enough likely appearances to meet the requirement rather than treating every scheduled game as a start. Yahoo says a team that misses its configured minimum will not win goalie categories or earn points from goalie performance for that period.

Record these settings from your league before planning the week. Defaults differ by provider, and commissioners may customize league rules.

- Minimum appearances: The threshold you must reach in a matchup or scoring period to qualify for goalie categories or points.
- Maximum games played: A cap on how many goalie games count under the league’s rule. Check whether exceeding it affects only future games or has another consequence.
- Scoring: Note whether your league rewards volume, efficiency, or both. Wins and shutouts are common volume categories; save percentage and goals-against average are efficiency categories.
- Lineup changes and locks: Find out whether lineups are daily or weekly and when a goalie becomes unavailable to move.
- Transactions: Check roster and add limits before relying on schedule-based pickups.
Yahoo: verify defaults and your league’s settings
Yahoo’s listed default settings are a minimum of 3 goalie games per team per week and a season maximum of 82 games. Those are Yahoo defaults, not universal fantasy-hockey rules; private-league settings can differ. ESPN: a cap breach can affect later days
ESPN’s goalie games-played limit is off by default, but a commissioner can configure one. In ESPN’s rules, exceeding the limit does not erase goalie stats already earned for the rest of that day. Goalie-slot stats are not earned on later days until the matchup ends. ESPN describes a standard seven-day matchup limit, with limits scaled proportionally for shorter or longer matchups. CBS Sports: weekly locks and date-specific rotisserie minimums
CBS Sports’ 2026–27 free rules set weekly lineups from Monday through Sunday, except Week 1, and lock each player five minutes before that player’s first scheduled game of the week. The same rules’ rotisserie format requires 82 combined goalie games over the season; a team that falls short is placed last in save percentage and goals-against average. For leagues beginning after October 16, 2026, CBS specifies a threshold of 40 instead. These are CBS rules for the named season and format, not general standards. Use a weekly workflow that accounts for locks and uncertainty
- Read your league settings. Write down the minimum, any cap, goalie scoring categories, lineup-change frequency, lock deadlines and transaction limits. Use the actual league settings rather than relying on a platform default.
- Review the NHL schedule and likely starters. A team game creates an opportunity, not a guaranteed appearance. Check current starter projections and timing before your platform’s lineup deadline.
- Protect the minimum early. Prioritize goalies with the clearest expected opportunities until you have a realistic path to the threshold. Leave a buffer for uncertain starts when missing the minimum would forfeit goalie categories or points.
- Pace starts under a cap. If your league has a maximum, compare projected appearances with remaining capacity and the days left in the matchup. On ESPN, a breach can make later days unproductive in goalie slots until the matchup ends.
- Judge extra starts by category and matchup position. More starts can create more chances for wins, shutouts, saves or appearance-based points, depending on your scoring. They can also move save percentage and goals-against average in the wrong direction. Consider whether an additional start helps more than it risks in categories where you are already ahead or behind.
- Use a tandem or pickup only if the rules and roster allow it. Holding both goalies in a tandem may increase the chance of reaching an appearance threshold. Schedule-based streaming—adding and dropping players for favorable schedules—can also create opportunities, but requires active management. Choose between two goalie options by comparing the trade-offs
