Darwin’s Paradox! has an excellent hook: you play an expressive octopus using camouflage, climbing arms, ink and swimming skills to survive a hostile world and get back to the sea. Its 2.5D presentation often looks like an animated film. The problem is that the game does not always build puzzles and stealth situations worthy of those abilities. In my playthrough, too many solutions felt obvious after experimentation rather than satisfying to discover, making the trial-and-error irritating at times. That is an editorial judgment, not a claim that every player will have the same experience.
There is still a likable adventure here, especially for players who value character, visual charm and a compact puzzle-platforming journey over elaborate systems. Darwin is memorable; the question is whether his tentacles are given enough meaningful work.

What is Darwin’s Paradox!?
Darwin’s Paradox! is a story-driven 2.5D platforming and puzzle adventure from French developer ZDT Studio and publisher KONAMI. The game combines platforming, stealth, infiltration and environmental puzzles around one central idea: an octopus can approach problems in ways a conventional hero cannot. You swim through spaces, hide from danger, camouflage yourself, climb with suction-covered arms and release ink to distract threats.

That perspective helps the game present Darwin as a small, expressive creature navigating spaces designed for larger, more dangerous inhabitants. It also creates the central design challenge. Every ability has to matter within a limited path through each scene; when an ability is used only as a simple key for a single obstacle, the fantasy feels thinner than the premise suggests.

KONAMI describes the game as an adventure about survival and escape. Darwin has been removed from his natural habitat and becomes entangled in the plans of the fictional UFOOD INC., a company pursuing world domination. His larger goal is to find a way back to the sea. The plot supplies a clear reason to move from one hostile environment to the next without requiring the game to become an open-world experience.
The octopus premise is the game’s biggest strength
Darwin is not merely an ordinary platform-game character with tentacles drawn on top. His body is the progression system. The official descriptions make swimming, hiding, infiltration, jumping, camouflage, climbing and ink part of his natural toolkit, and the best moments come when those traits change how you read a room.
Swimming turns the environment into a three-dimensional problem
Water lets Darwin move through routes that a land-based character would treat as walls. Swimming can be used to reach another side of an area, approach a threat from an unexpected direction or avoid a surface route altogether. The ability is most interesting when the level asks you to decide whether water is an escape route, a hiding place or part of a larger sequence. It is less interesting when it simply transports you between two obvious ledges.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCamouflage and hiding support the stealth fantasy
Camouflage gives Darwin a way to survive encounters he cannot win through force. Hiding also reinforces the story’s scale: a small animal is navigating a world where remaining unseen is often more sensible than confronting an obstacle. The design succeeds when concealment requires you to observe movement, choose a safe position and wait for an opening. It loses momentum when the correct hiding spot is so clear that the scene becomes a pause rather than a decision.
Suction-covered arms make climbing feel character-specific
Climbing is the clearest example of a movement mechanic that belongs to an octopus. Suction-covered arms allow Darwin to cling to surfaces and reach places that conventional jump arcs would not. This makes vertical spaces feel appropriate to the protagonist rather than pasted onto a generic platforming template. The mechanic’s long-term value depends on level design: repeated straight climbs show the animation, while angled routes, interruptions and multiple possible surfaces would make the player think about where each arm can take him.

Ink is a tool for misdirection, not a combat replacement
Darwin’s ink can distract threats, giving the player a nonviolent way to create an opening. That choice fits the character and the game’s emphasis on escape. Ink works best when you must decide when to spend attention on a distraction, which direction an enemy will investigate and how quickly you can move once the opening appears. If an encounter always accepts ink in the same way, the ability becomes a button press rather than a puzzle.
How the play loop works
A typical stretch of Darwin’s Paradox! asks you to read an environment, identify a route, use one or more octopus abilities, and recover when your first attempt fails. Platforming supplies the physical movement; stealth determines when movement is safe; puzzles determine which interaction opens the next path. The loop is easy to understand, which makes it accessible, but it also means the game has to keep introducing new combinations to maintain surprise.
Movement and exploration
Jumping provides the familiar platforming foundation, while swimming and climbing expand the available routes. The visual design encourages you to look for surfaces, gaps and hiding places rather than simply moving from left to right. Darwin’s unusual body gives ordinary traversal a different texture: you are constantly asking whether a surface is climbable, whether water offers a bypass and whether a visible route is actually safe.
Stealth and infiltration
Infiltration is about timing and positioning rather than defeating every obstacle. Hiding and camouflage let you wait out danger; ink lets you redirect attention. This can create a pleasant rhythm of observation, movement and retreat. The downside is that stealth becomes repetitive if enemy behavior, cover placement and distraction results do not vary enough. The sources available for this review do not establish an objective count of encounters or a universal frustration rate, so the criticism here is about how the mechanics felt in my experience, not a statistical claim about all players.
Puzzle solving
The puzzles ask you to connect Darwin’s abilities to the environment. A good puzzle makes the solution legible only after you understand the relationship between an ability and a hazard. A weaker one asks for a sequence of attempts until the game’s intended interaction becomes apparent. That difference is central to the review. Trial and error is not automatically bad in a platformer; experimenting can be satisfying when each failure teaches you something. It becomes annoying when the failure mainly confirms that the game wanted a particular interaction that was not communicated clearly.

Why the trial-and-error can wear you down
The phrase “annoying trial-and-error” describes my evaluation of the game’s execution, not a documented consensus. GamesRadar’s review similarly praised the charm of the octopus concept while arguing that the abilities can be simplistic or underused. That criticism captures the tension in Darwin’s Paradox!: the game has more distinctive verbs than many small platform adventures, but it does not always ask enough of them.
Underuse is the first problem. If camouflage, climbing or ink appears only occasionally, the player learns the move but does not develop a deeper strategy around it. The ability feels like a novelty that returns for a specific scene rather than a tool that can be combined in several ways. A more ambitious design would let the player solve the same problem with different mixtures of swimming, hiding, climbing and distraction, then make those choices carry different risks.
Simplicity is the second problem. An ability can be frequent and still feel shallow if the answer never changes. For example, a distraction mechanic is more compelling when the direction, timing and destination of the threat matter. A climb is more engaging when several surfaces compete for your attention. When the environment presents one obvious interaction, experimentation becomes a tax on reaching the next cutscene rather than a form of discovery.
That does not make every failed attempt meaningless. Learning an enemy’s timing, finding a safe position or recognizing that water is the intended route can be rewarding. The irritation appears when the game’s visual language suggests several possibilities but only one is accepted. Players who enjoy testing boundaries may treat those moments as part of the adventure; players who expect consistently readable puzzle logic may find them laborious.
Presentation: a lovable hero in a cinematic frame
Darwin’s expressive design gives the game an immediate emotional advantage. An octopus is visually distinctive, and the animation can communicate curiosity, fear and determination without relying on a conventional warrior silhouette. KONAMI’s product descriptions and the game’s presentation lean into an animated-film-inspired tone, making the contrast between Darwin’s vulnerability and the hostile world easy to understand.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The cinematic approach also supports the story’s unusual premise. UFOOD INC.’s world-domination plan is broad and deliberately colorful, while Darwin’s personal goal remains simple: survive long enough to return to the sea. That combination lets the game move between large stakes and small physical problems. A room can matter because it is part of a global threat and because a tiny animal must find a way across it.
Visual charm cannot, by itself, solve a mechanical problem. When a scene looks as if it should invite creative manipulation but offers only one straightforward action, the presentation raises expectations that the systems do not always meet. The game is at its most convincing when the cinematic framing and the tentacle-based interaction point in the same direction.
Controls, pausing and playing offline
The PlayStation product page states that controls can be reviewed at any time. That is useful in a game with several context-sensitive abilities, particularly when you return after a break and need to remember which input handles movement, camouflage or ink.
The same page says that play and cinematics can be paused during offline play. That makes the adventure easier to fit around interruptions and removes the need to rush through a scene simply because a cinematic has started. The available information does not establish platform-by-platform control layouts, performance targets, resolution or frame-rate parity, so those should not be assumed to be identical across systems.

KONAMI’s US launch announcement gave a suggested retail price of $24.99 USD. That is the publisher’s US launch SRP from 2026, not a guarantee of the current price or of pricing in every region. Store discounts, taxes and regional conversion can change the amount you see at checkout.
The launch notice confirms digital storefronts. The available material does not verify an Amazon listing or a physical copy, so check the exact platform and edition before assuming a boxed release exists. Nintendo’s official Switch 2 listing is the clearest platform-specific product reference currently established here.
Which version should you choose?
Choose by where you want to play
All five announced platforms contain the same core premise and ability set, so the practical decision is the device you already use and the display or controller setup you prefer. A television-based console is a natural fit if you want to view the game’s cinematic scenes from the sofa. A handheld-oriented setup may appeal if you prefer short sessions and the ability to pause offline, but platform-specific battery and performance behavior is not documented in the available sources.
Do not buy for a promised physical edition
Because the confirmed launch information centers on digital storefronts, treat any physical-format assumption cautiously. Verify the listing, region and edition at the store where you intend to purchase. The game does not come with an established requirement for a special controller, guide or accessory.
Buy for the concept, not for a guaranteed puzzle gauntlet
The strongest reason to play is the chance to inhabit a character whose body changes movement and stealth. If you are looking for densely layered puzzles in which every ability combines with every other system, temper expectations. The independent criticism that the abilities can be simplistic or underused is relevant, but it remains one reviewer’s assessment rather than a measured verdict on every player’s experience.
Who will enjoy Darwin’s Paradox!?
- Players who should be interested: anyone drawn to an expressive nonhuman protagonist, cinematic presentation, light platforming, environmental puzzles and stealth based on avoidance rather than direct combat.
- Players who may be disappointed: those who want constant mechanical escalation, highly systemic stealth or puzzles that support several equally valid solutions.
- Players sensitive to retries: expect some experimentation. The game’s trial-and-error feel is a critical judgment from this review, and the sources do not establish how often other players will encounter the same frustration.
- Players choosing a platform: select among PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, Steam and Epic Games Store according to your preferred hardware and the current listing, rather than assuming performance or price parity.
Final verdict
Darwin’s Paradox! is easy to like before it is easy to evaluate. The octopus protagonist is genuinely distinctive, the survival premise gives the adventure direction, and swimming, camouflage, suction climbing and ink provide a coherent set of abilities. When a level makes those powers interact, the game delivers the playful fantasy its premise promises.
Its weakness is the distance between that fantasy and the regularity of its challenges. In my experience, abilities were not always used often or deeply enough, and some solutions emerged through frustrating experimentation instead of clear, rewarding deduction. GamesRadar reached a related conclusion about the mechanics being simplistic or underused, while the available evidence does not justify turning that criticism into a universal claim.
