If Windows reports that datafilemanager_sl.dll is missing, repair or reinstall the parent Symantec/Norton program rather than downloading the DLL by itself.
What this file actually does
Public file metadata describes datafilemanager_sl.dll as Data File Manager and associates it with Symantec Corporation and the product Symantec Shared Library. That identifies it as an application component, not a normal Windows system file.
The exact current Norton product that originally installed it is not established. It may belong to an older Symantec or Norton installation, and a current Norton installer is not verified to contain this historical file.
Reported metadata includes version 1.2.0.900 and a size of approximately 132 KB, but public records disagree about whether the file is 32-bit or 64-bit. Treat those details as identification clues, not as a specification for downloading a replacement.

- DirectX
- Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
- .NET
- A Windows driver
The safest repair is therefore to restore the complete application that needs the file.
Causes of the error by symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Error appears when Norton starts | Damaged or incomplete Norton installation | Repair or reinstall Norton |
| Error began after a Norton update | Update left an incomplete installation | Use Norton’s Remove and Reinstall tool |
| Error appears at every boot, but Norton is gone | Partial uninstall or stale startup entry | Remove the remaining program and startup reference |
| Windows Security shows the file in quarantine | Antivirus removal or possible false positive | Verify the parent program, then reinstall it |
| “Bad image” or “not designed to run on Windows” | Wrong architecture or damaged binary | Reinstall the complete application |
| “Specified module could not be found” | Another dependency may be missing | Reinstall the parent application and inspect the caller |
| Several unrelated Windows components fail | Possible Windows component corruption | Run DISM and SFC |
| Error began after a system change | Damaged settings or application state | Consider System Restore |
Fix 1: Identify the program calling the DLL
Do not begin by copying a replacement file. First determine which program is requesting it.
- Write down the complete error message and when it appears.
- Note whether it appears while opening Norton, during Windows startup, or when launching another application.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Apps and features.
- Search for Norton, Symantec, or another security product that was installed around the time the problem began.
- If the error appears in a program-specific window, repair that program first instead of repairing Windows.
If the DLL already exists on the computer, inspect its location:

- Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
- Search for
datafilemanager_sl.dll. - Right-click the result and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab if it is available.
- On the General tab, record the full path and use Details to inspect the signer and product information.
A file beneath a known Symantec or Norton program directory is more consistent with the reported file identity than a copy in Downloads, a temporary folder, or an unexpected user directory. Do not assume that an unsigned file is malware solely because it is old, but scan suspicious copies before allowing or restoring them.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have quarantined the file. Reinstalling the signed parent application is safer than restoring an isolated DLL.
Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving the Symantec or Norton installation.
- Expand a detection to view its path, detection name, and action.
- If the item is clearly part of a verified installation, use Restore only after confirming that the parent application and publisher are trustworthy.
Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the error. Microsoft warns that allowing a detected file can put the device and data at risk. If the file was quarantined from an unexpected directory, leave it isolated and run a full scan.

Do not create an antivirus exclusion just to make the error disappear. Reinstalling the parent product replaces the complete set of files and lets security software evaluate the installation as a whole.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall Norton or Symantec
This is the most likely solution when the error appears during security software startup or after an update.
If Norton is still installed
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Locate the Norton product.
- Open its menu and choose Uninstall or Modify, depending on the options provided.
- Follow the repair or removal instructions.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall Norton from your Norton account or the official installer supplied with your license.
For current Norton installations, Norton’s official Remove and Reinstall tool can remove or reinstall the device-security application. Run the tool, choose Reinstall first, and restart when prompted. If that fails, run it again, choose Remove, restart, and then reinstall Norton from the Norton account.
If the remover cannot complete:
- Restart Windows and try again.
- Uninstall Norton through Apps and Features.
- If necessary, press Windows + R, type
appwiz.cpl, and press Enter. - Select the remaining Norton or Symantec entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart the computer.
- Run the Norton remover again if remnants remain.
- Reinstall the supported Norton product.
Success means the original application opens without the DLL message and the error does not return after another restart. If the same message remains, identify the program named in the error rather than repeatedly reinstalling Norton.
If the Symantec product is old
Older Symantec products may no longer be supported by current installers. Do not obtain their DLL files from unofficial download pages. Use the original licensed installer or move to a currently supported security product.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the old program is no longer needed, uninstall it completely. A missing-DLL message at every boot often means Windows is trying to launch a leftover Symantec component after the main product was removed.
Fix 4: Remove a leftover startup entry
Use this fix only after confirming that the associated Norton or Symantec product has been uninstalled.

- Right-click Start and select Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for entries referring to Norton, Symantec, or an unknown program launched at the same time as the error.
- Right-click a confirmed obsolete entry and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Also check scheduled tasks:
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks clearly associated with an uninstalled Norton or Symantec product.
- Confirm the task’s action and file path.
- Disable the task only when you are certain it belongs to the removed software.
Do not delete random registry values or services to suppress the message. If the caller is unclear, record its path and command first.
Fix 5: Reinstall the complete application, not just the DLL
A DLL error can name one missing file while another dependency is the real problem. Reinstalling only datafilemanager_sl.dll can leave the application with mismatched libraries, missing registry information, or the wrong architecture.

- Uninstall the application that displays the error.
- Restart Windows.
- Download or run the installer from the application’s official vendor source.
- Install the version intended for your Windows architecture and product release.
- Restart again.
- Test the application before restoring old configuration files.
The conflicting public architecture reports mean you should not choose a 32-bit or 64-bit DLL based on a file-index page. Let the complete installer select the correct files. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit applications can still require 32-bit components, so the operating system’s bitness alone does not identify the required DLL.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components if other system files are failing
Because datafilemanager_sl.dll is not established as a Windows component, System File Checker will not normally restore this particular third-party file. Use these commands when Windows itself is unstable or several unrelated protected system files are also failing.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If both commands complete without resolving the application error, return to repairing the Norton, Symantec, or other parent application.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time while leaving the original application damaged. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying repair issues and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when this DLL belongs to that program.

Fix 7: Check updates and drivers only when the symptoms support it
A driver update is not a normal fix for a missing Symantec application DLL. Consider it only if the error began after a hardware, security, or system update and Device Manager also reports a problem.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the affected hardware.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and choose Properties.
- Read the Device status message.
- Use Update driver, or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers instead of making you identify and compare many versions manually; the free scan shows detected issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional. It will not replace the need to reinstall the Symantec or Norton application that owns this DLL.
Windows Features are similarly unlikely to help. Do not enable random features or install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because a DLL error appears. Install a runtime only when the calling application’s official requirements identify it.

Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL installation command. It works with DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically for specific COM components.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do not run:
regsvr32 datafilemanager_sl.dll
unless the vendor specifically confirms that this DLL is a self-registering component and provides the correct registration procedure. Registration cannot repair a missing dependency, replace a damaged installation, or make an incompatible 32-bit and 64-bit binary work together.
Do not download this DLL from a random website
Avoid downloading datafilemanager_sl.dll from DLL collections, file mirrors, forums, or search-result download pages. A replacement may contain malware, belong to the wrong version, use the wrong architecture, or fail because another dependency is missing.
Never copy an unknown DLL into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- An application directory
The safe sources are the official installer for the parent Norton, Symantec, or other application, and Microsoft’s official Windows repair procedures when broader system corruption is present.
If the error started after a system change
If the error began immediately after installing a driver, application, or Windows change:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the problem.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert system files, settings, and installed programs without normally affecting personal files. It does not replace the need to reinstall a damaged Norton or Symantec application if the problem returns.
FAQ
Is datafilemanager_sl.dll a Windows file?
Evidence indicates that it is an application component associated with an older Symantec Shared Library, not a standard Windows DLL.

Which Norton product installed it?
The exact product is not verified. Identify the calling application, its installation path, and its digital signature before choosing a repair.
Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public metadata conflicts. Do not download a replacement based on those reports. Reinstall the complete parent application so its installer supplies the correct architecture.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not automatically. There is no verified evidence that this DLL belongs to one of those Microsoft packages. Install a runtime only when the affected application specifically requires it.
Why does the message say “specified module could not be found” when the DLL exists?
Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the named DLL. The parent application’s installer is safer than guessing which additional file is missing.
What if Norton is no longer installed?
Remove leftover Norton or Symantec entries through Installed apps or appwiz.cpl, then inspect startup apps and scheduled tasks for confirmed remnants. Do not delete registry entries blindly.
When should I suspect malware?
Check the file’s path, digital signature, and antivirus history. An unsigned copy in a temporary or download directory deserves more scrutiny than a signed file beneath a verified Symantec or Norton installation. Scan before restoring anything from quarantine.
