pythoncom22.dll is a Python 2.2 COM-extension DLL, not a Windows system component. It usually belongs to an old Windows program that bundled Python 2.2 and the Win32 extensions once known as win32all.
The safest fix is to identify the application named in the error, then repair or reinstall that application from its original vendor installer or installation media. Do not download an isolated copy of pythoncom22.dll and place it in System32.
What pythoncom22.dll does
The 22 suffix identifies the Python 2.2 generation. This file provided COM support for older Windows Python applications and commonly appeared with:

Some historical applications embedded Python or bundled these extensions. An old Outlook plug-in is one documented example, but the filename alone cannot identify the program on your computer.

pythoncom22.dll is not part of Windows, Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET. A modern Python installation or current pywin32 package will not normally satisfy a binary compiled for Python 2.2.
Reported messages include “pythoncom22.dll was not found,” “The program can’t start because pythoncom22.dll is missing,” and “Error loading pythoncom22.dll.” The exact wording depends on the Windows loader and the application attempting to start.
Fix 1: Identify and repair the owning application
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
This is the most likely solution because the DLL ships with the program that installed it.
1. Read the complete error
Look for the executable named in the dialog or title bar. The program may be an old utility, plug-in, business application, game, or Office add-in.
If the dialog only names pythoncom22.dll, close it and use the affected shortcut:
- Right-click the program shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Inspect the Target field.
- Select Open File Location if available.
- Note the folder containing the executable.
The folder name often reveals the product or vendor. Do not assume that a file found under C:WindowsSystem32 belongs to Windows. Historical Python installers sometimes placed this extension in a Windows system directory even though it remained a third-party Python component.
2. Check installed programs
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for the product, publisher, or plug-in.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
You can also open Control Panel, select Programs, and choose Programs and Features.
If you find the owning application, select its menu or right-click entry and choose Repair, Modify, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.

3. Run repair or verify
Use the application’s own repair, verify-files, or maintenance option. If the program has a launcher, open it as administrator:
- Right-click the launcher.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run its repair or file-verification function.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the original program again.
A successful repair restores the matching legacy files together. The error should disappear, or it should change to a more specific message about another missing dependency.
4. Reinstall from a trusted source
If repair is unavailable or fails:
- Back up the application’s settings and data.
- Uninstall the affected application from Installed apps or Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall using the original vendor installer, company deployment package, or trusted installation media.
- Apply only updates that explicitly support the application.
- Restart Windows and test it.
Reinstall the complete application rather than copying only pythoncom22.dll. A compatible installation may also need python22.dll, pywintypes22.dll, registry entries, configuration files, and other application dependencies.
If the program explicitly requires Python 2.2, its installer may include the required runtime. The official Python 2.2.3 Windows archive is a historical source, not a current supported runtime. Install it only when the original application documentation or installer specifically requires it.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Antivirus software may have removed or quarantined a file after an update, cleanup operation, or detection change.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection that names
pythoncom22.dllor the owning application. - Check the file path and detection details.
- Verify that the file came from the original application installer or trusted vendor media.
Only restore or allow the file when its provenance is trusted and you have verified that the detection is a false positive. Do not restore a DLL obtained from an unknown download site.
After restoring a trusted quarantined file, reinstall or repair the parent application if other files were removed. Run a full scan if the path, publisher, or installer source is unfamiliar.
Fix 3: Check the complete legacy installation
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A file can exist while Windows reports that its module could not be found. In that case, Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by pythoncom22.dll.

Open the owning application’s folder and check whether the matching files are present:
python22.dllpythoncom22.dllpywintypes22.dll
They should come from the same application installation and Python generation. Do not mix files copied from different programs or different Python installations.
If the DLL exists but the error says “specified module could not be found,” “entry point not found,” or “failed to load,” repair or reinstall the entire application. A dependency inspection tool can help an experienced administrator identify the missing module, but replacing random dependencies based only on a filename is unsafe.
Multiple Python installations can leave stale version-suffixed files in different folders. Current pywin32 troubleshooting guidance also warns about conflicting copies of these DLLs. Remove conflicts through the owning application’s uninstaller or reinstall process rather than deleting files manually from Windows directories.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit legacy applications, but it does not convert their DLLs into 64-bit files. A legacy Python 2.2 application may require a 32-bit copy of pythoncom22.dll and matching 32-bit companion files.
Do not choose a replacement because a download page labels it “64-bit.” The correct architecture is determined by the application and the package that built it.
To check the application:
- Open the application folder.
- Look for documentation, installer options, or folders labeled
x86,Win32, orx64. - Check the vendor’s original system requirements.
- Reinstall the package matching the application’s architecture.
Do not combine a 32-bit pythoncom22.dll with 64-bit python22.dll, or the reverse. Architecture mismatches commonly produce load failures or entry-point errors.
Fix 5: Roll back a failed application update
Time needed: 15–45 minutes

- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Use Repair, Reset, or Uninstall, according to the application’s options.
- Reinstall the last application version known to support its Python 2.2 environment.
- Disable automatic updates for that application only if its vendor documents a supported method.
For older software, a modern update may remove or stop supporting the Python 2.2 components the program still needs. Keep a backup of the original installer and application data.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A display or device driver is not a normal source of pythoncom22.dll. Consider driver work only if the application error appeared alongside device failures, graphics crashes, or a Windows upgrade that affected hardware support.
To check drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing hardware.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For a rollback, right-click the device, select Properties, open the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver when available. For a clean reinstall, download the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page, uninstall the device only when directed by the manufacturer, and restart.

Fix 7: Use DISM and SFC only for Windows corruption
Time needed: 15–40 minutes
Because pythoncom22.dll is normally a third-party application file, Windows repair tools usually cannot recreate it. Use them when other Windows components are also failing, Windows Update is damaged, or there is evidence of protected system-file corruption.
First install pending Windows updates, then:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Run the commands one at a time. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows resources. Neither is expected to restore a missing Python 2.2 extension owned by an old application.

Do not copy pythoncom22.dll into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an arbitrary application folder. This can create version conflicts, expose Windows to an untrusted binary, and leave the application using the wrong architecture.

regsvr32 pythoncom22.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. pythoncom22.dll is ordinarily a Python extension module, not a standalone ActiveX control or COM server. Use regsvr32 only if the original application’s documentation specifically instructs you to register this file.
Why the error appeared
The usual causes are:
- The parent application was damaged or incompletely updated.
- Antivirus software quarantined or removed the file.
- The application was moved, partially uninstalled, or cleaned up.
- Matching Python 2.2 files were replaced by files from another installation.
- The application or one of its dependencies has the wrong architecture.
- A dependent DLL is missing even though
pythoncom22.dllremains. - Windows system corruption is affecting the application environment.
- An untrusted or malicious replacement was introduced.
The filename cannot reveal the exact installed program, file version, hash, signing status, or bitness. Use the executable path, installed-program list, installer records, and original vendor media to establish ownership.

If the application is unidentified or unsupported
Search the error’s executable path, desktop shortcut, Start menu entry, and Installed apps list. Check old backup drives and installation media for the original product name.
If the program is abandoned, avoid exposing your everyday Windows installation to an untrusted legacy installer. Keep a backup, limit network access, and consider running the program in an isolated virtual machine. If the software is no longer essential, replacing it with a supported application is safer than maintaining a loose DLL collection.

Is pythoncom22.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a historical Python 2.2 Windows COM extension associated with an application or older Win32 extension package.
Do I need to install modern Python?
Usually not. Current Python does not provide binary compatibility with an application built for Python 2.2. Restore the exact legacy environment required by the parent application.
Can I download just the DLL?

Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file exists?

Will SFC restore it?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows resources, while pythoncom22.dll is generally a third-party application file.
