Whether that suits you is more important than its review score: Steam’s English review snapshot was 74% positive from 178,368 reviews, labeled “Mostly Positive,” but that aggregate cannot predict your own sessions.
What kind of game is DayZ?
DayZ is a multiplayer-focused survival sandbox set in a world devastated by an unknown virus. In the official premise, you are one of the immune survivors among infected populations in Chernarus and Livonia. Other players can affect what happens in a session in unpredictable ways; the developers’ Steam description specifically warns that they may “impact the game experience significantly.” Steam’s DayZ listing also says voice and text chat can be disabled in the game options.

That makes the central buying question personal: do you want an open-ended survival game shaped by player encounters, or would you rather have a structured campaign with reliable, scripted progression? DayZ is presented as the former. The available sources do not establish how fair, difficult, polished, or enjoyable a particular player’s experience will be.

In the Steam listing snapshot captured on October 8, 2026, DayZ had 74% positive English reviews among 178,368 reviews, with Steam labeling the result “Mostly Positive.” This is a dynamic store aggregate, not a controlled study or a guarantee of quality; its count and percentage can change.

That score is best used as one signal rather than a verdict. Consider whether you are comfortable with multiplayer uncertainty and whether the survival sandbox premise appeals to you. Server quality, moderation, cheating, solo viability, learning curve, combat balance, and real-session technical performance are not established by this snapshot.
Which maps are included, and what do the expansions add?
Steam’s current listing describes Chernarus and Livonia as included in the base game. It also says DayZ supports Workshop content and community-run servers. Store packaging can change, so check the listing for your region and platform before buying.

For Badlands, the developer announced sandstorms, rebuildable houses, motorcycles, radio and Morse-code gameplay, regional firearms and clothing, wildlife, diseases, and underground facilities. These are announced plans, not verified shipped features as of October 8. The announcement gave an approximate price of $24.99 and said regional pricing may apply; check your storefront for current price and release status before making a purchase decision.
Choose by environment and current availability rather than assuming one map is objectively harder: Sakhal is the winter option, while Badlands was planned as an arid one. The available sources do not establish whether an expansion is required to join a particular server; check that server’s rules and your platform’s store page.

What changed recently, and what was still planned?
On April 8, 2026, the DayZ team announced update 1.29 as live on all platforms. The announcement highlighted server-stability and performance work, terrain blending, firearm sound changes, additional winter clothing and gear for Frostline, and continuing work on modding tools. Those are developer-reported changes, not evidence that every platform or server is stable. The 1.29 announcement also described DayZ as more than 13 years old; that is the developer’s characterization.
A separate October 2026 announcement scheduled update 1.30 and the Badlands expansion for October 15. As of October 8, both were still future releases. For a decision made after that date, verify whether they launched and whether the announced features or pricing changed.

Who is DayZ a good fit for?
- Consider it if the appeal of an open-ended survival sandbox includes the uncertainty of other people, and you are willing to choose a map based on its environment.
- Think twice if you want a conventional solo story, predictable encounters, or a guarantee about server quality, technical performance, or combat balance. The sources cited here do not verify those qualities.
- Before buying, confirm the current base-game contents, expansion status and local price, platform availability, and—on PC—whether your system meets the published requirements.
Steam’s listing says the game supports Workshop and community-run servers, so community content is part of the offering. The quality and moderation of any specific server are not established by that listing; evaluate the server you intend to join.
