When a DayZ server will not start, the cause is usually visible in a log rather than hidden in the game browser. A missing or malformed -config file can stop the process before networking begins; a missing Windows runtime can make DayZServer_x64.exe close immediately; BattlEye can fail during service initialization; and a server that stays running but cannot be found usually has a port, firewall, query-port, or IP problem. Mods add another failure layer.

Diagnose in that order: capture the newest RPT/profile log, validate serverDZ.cfg and the mission, verify Windows dependencies and permissions, repair BattlEye, then test ports and mods from a known-good vanilla launch. Changing several settings at once hides the original evidence.

Identify the failure stage before changing anything
The symptom tells you which evidence to collect. Treat a process exit, a BattlEye service error, an invisible server, and a failed mod load as different incidents.

This separation prevents a network fix from being applied to a server that never completed startup, or a mod reinstall from being used to treat a blocked BattlEye service.

1. Capture the failure with a repeatable launch
Run the server from a batch file or shortcut so every attempt uses the same executable, configuration, and logging switches. The official DayZ server configuration reference identifies -config as mandatory; a launch without a specified configuration file will not start.

pauseUse the actual path to your executable and configuration. If the files are in different folders, use fully qualified paths and confirm that the account launching the process can read them. Keep pause while diagnosing so a console error remains visible after an immediate exit. The port shown is an example; use the game port defined by your own setup.
- Stop any existing DayZ server process.
- Run the batch file once without changing other settings.
- Open the newest RPT file in the profile directory selected by
-profiles. Sort by modification time so you do not read an old failure. - Record the first error in sequence, not just the final shutdown line. Earlier messages normally identify the missing file, malformed value, script, or service that caused the exit.
- Save the console output and the RPT before making a correction. Change one variable per attempt.
-doLogs, -adminLog, and -netLog produce complementary evidence. Keep them enabled until the server has completed a clean startup and a local connection test.
2. Validate serverDZ.cfg and the -config path
A DayZ server can fail before it loads a mission if the configuration path is wrong or the file cannot be parsed. Check the path passed on the command line first; a correctly written file in the wrong directory is still a startup failure.
Check the file itself
- Open the exact file referenced by
-config, not a similarly named copy in another folder. - Confirm that required entries have values and that statements end with semicolons where the configuration syntax requires them.
- Check quotation marks around text values. An unmatched quote can make the parser consume later lines and report a misleading error.
- Remove accidental characters introduced by a web page or word processor, including typographic quotes and invisible formatting.
- Verify that the mission template named in the configuration is present in the server installation.
- Keep a backup of the last known-good file so you can revert one change without rebuilding the whole configuration.
Use a plain-text editor. Do not rename a file to serverDZ.cfg while Windows is hiding a second extension such as .txt. If the console says the configuration is missing, inspect the working directory and the complete path, including drive letter and capitalization where relevant to your tooling.

Use a minimal configuration as a test
If a large file will not parse, copy it, then temporarily remove optional entries until the server starts. Do not discard the original. A minimal file that launches proves the executable and basic syntax work; add the removed settings back in small groups to locate the offending line. Keep the mission value pointing to a template that actually exists in your installation, such as the standard offline template supplied with the server, rather than copying a name from a different branch or platform.
3. Confirm the mission and server files are complete
After the configuration is read, the server must load the mission template and its dependencies. RPT messages are more useful than a silent process exit:
Cannot open: a referenced file or path cannot be opened. Check spelling, relative-path assumptions, file permissions, and whether the file was actually installed.Missing addons: the mission or mod references an addon that is absent or was not loaded. Verify the dependency and load order before changing unrelated settings.SCRIPT (E): a script error. Note the file and line context, then determine whether it belongs to the mission, a server-side mod, or a client-side mod.
Verify the mission template
- Open the server’s mission or template directory and identify the exact folder name available there.
- Compare that name character-for-character with the
-missionvalue or the mission setting inserverDZ.cfg. - Confirm that the template contains its expected data files rather than an empty directory created by an incomplete extraction.
- Launch without mods. If the template loads in vanilla, the base installation is usable and the remaining fault is likely in a mod or its dependency.
Do not copy a mission folder from an unrelated game build and assume it is compatible. If an update interrupted installation, validate or repair the server files using the distribution method you used, then repeat the vanilla test and read a fresh RPT.

4. Check Windows runtime components and permissions
A missing Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable can make the executable close immediately or produce a DLL error before DayZ writes a useful server log. Check the evidence first instead of installing random runtime packages.
Find the missing module
- Open Windows Event Viewer.
- Go to Windows Logs and then Application.
- Find the error at the time of the failed launch and note the faulting application and module name.
- Compare that module with the Visual C++ runtime or other dependency named by the event. Install or repair the appropriate Microsoft package from an official source, then reboot if Windows requests it.
If Event Viewer names a different DLL, do not assume Visual C++ is the answer. A missing game file, security product quarantine, or damaged installation can produce a similar immediate close.

Verify filesystem access
- Give the Windows account running the server read and execute access to the executable, mission, configuration, BattlEye files, and profile directory.
- Ensure the profile directory exists and is writable;
-profilespoints to the location where logs and profile data should be created. - Look in antivirus or endpoint-security history for quarantined or blocked DayZ and BattlEye files.
- Run one test from a simple local path without cloud-sync or removable-drive behavior, then move the installation only after you know which change fixed the problem.
Administrator rights can help distinguish a permission failure, but they are not a substitute for correct folder ACLs. If an elevated launch works and a normal launch does not, fix permissions for the service account rather than permanently running every process with maximum rights.
5. Repair BattlEye initialization without guessing
BattlEye failures occur during service setup, before players can connect. The BattlEye FAQ identifies antivirus or other security software blocking BEService.exe, BEService_x64.exe, or the BattlEye service directory, as well as Windows permission problems, as common causes.

Check blocked files and permissions
- Read the BattlEye message in the console and the newest BattlEye/RPT log to identify the exact executable or directory involved.
- Review antivirus, endpoint-security, and controlled-folder-access history for a block or quarantine event.
- Add a narrowly scoped exclusion for the verified DayZ/BattlEye executable and service directory, following your security product’s policy. Do not disable all protection as a permanent fix.
- Confirm that the account launching the server can read and execute the BattlEye files and create or update the service directory.
- Start the server again and check whether the service now initializes before changing any port or mod setting.
Check the BattlEye path
The DayZ server reference documents -BEpath and -profiles. Use them to make the service and logs point to deliberate, writable directories instead of relying on an unexpected working directory. BEServer_x64.cfg belongs beside BEServer_x64.dll; placing the configuration elsewhere can leave the service running with defaults or fail to initialize, depending on the installation.
DayZServer_x64.exe -config=serverDZ.cfg -BEpath=BattlEye -profiles=profiles -doLogs -adminLog -netLogThe path names above are examples. Match them to the folders in your installation and preserve the existing files before editing.
Recreate the service directory only when evidence supports it
If logs show a damaged or incomplete BattlEye service directory, stop the server, copy the directory for backup, and recreate it using the files delivered with the same DayZ server build. Do not delete the directory merely because a player cannot see the server; visibility is normally a networking problem. After recreation, repeat the security-exclusion and permission checks so the replacement files are not blocked again.
6. Separate a running server from an unreachable server
A process that remains in Task Manager is not proof that clients can reach it. DayZ server visibility depends on the game port, Steam query port, Windows Firewall, router forwarding, and the address a client is testing.

Check the local machine first
- Leave the server running and confirm that the console continues to log without a fatal shutdown.
- From the same machine, test the configured local endpoint, commonly
127.0.0.1:2302when 2302 is your game port. - If the local test fails, stay on the server: inspect the configured port, RPT, and firewall before touching router settings.
- If local access works, test from another computer on the same LAN using the server’s private IP.
- Only after LAN access works, test from outside the network using the public IP or DNS name and the forwarded port.
Review the normal UDP range
DayZ setup and troubleshooting guidance commonly checks UDP 2302-2305. The exact game and Steam query ports depend on your launch parameters and hosting layout, so write down both values instead of assuming that opening one port is sufficient.

Reserve the server’s private IP in the router or configure a static address so forwarding does not silently point at another device. Do not expose unrelated ports simply because a guide lists them; open the ports your launch command and query configuration actually use.
Account for browser filters and maintenance
A browser filter can hide BattlEye-protected servers. For a diagnostic search, temporarily remove filters that exclude protected servers, then restore your preferred filters after testing. Bohemia Interactive support also notes that scheduled Wednesday maintenance can affect server-browser visibility. If a known-good local and LAN test work during a maintenance window, wait for the service to recover before rebuilding your installation.
7. Establish a vanilla baseline, then isolate mods
Mods combine file paths, dependencies, scripts, signatures, and load order. Prove that the base server works before troubleshooting that larger variable set.
- Copy your working launch command and configuration for safekeeping.
- Remove
-modand-serverModtemporarily. Do not delete the mod folders yet. - Launch with logging enabled and the same mission, ports, BattlEye path, and profile path.
- Wait for a stable process and perform the local connection test.
- If vanilla fails, continue with configuration, files, runtime, BattlEye, and network checks; mods are not the cause of that baseline failure.
- If vanilla succeeds, restore only half of the mods and launch again.
- When the failure returns, split the failing half again. When it does not, add the other half. This binary-search method reduces a large collection to one suspect in a few controlled attempts.
- For the suspect mod, compare its folder name and path with the command line, install every documented dependency, and inspect the first

Keep client-only content out of -serverMod, and do not infer load order from alphabetical order. Use the mod’s current dependency information and the error that appears at startup. A clean vanilla launch is the reference point for every later change.
8. Choose the smallest remedy that matches the evidence
Reinstalling everything is rarely the first or best fix. Match the scope of the intervention to the failure stage.

Self-hosted Windows server or managed hosting?
Moving to managed hosting does not repair a malformed mission or incompatible mod automatically. Consider it when the recurring burden is operational rather than diagnostic: maintaining Windows, forwarding ports, keeping BattlEye healthy, making backups, and updating a large mod set.

Decide only after identifying the underlying burden. If the RPT says the configuration is missing, a hosting move is an unnecessarily large change; if router access and Windows maintenance are the persistent problem, managed infrastructure may address that operational constraint.
When to stop troubleshooting and escalate
Escalate with evidence, not a description such as “it just closes.” Include the exact launch command, the timestamp of the attempt, the newest RPT/profile log, the console output, the Event Viewer module name if applicable, BattlEye messages, and whether 127.0.0.1:2302, LAN, and public tests each succeeded. State which mods were removed and whether the vanilla baseline launched.
BattlEye bans and ban administration are handled by BattlEye rather than Bohemia Interactive. If a player is denied for a ban while the server itself starts and is reachable, treat that as an account or ban-administration issue, not as a startup failure. Conversely, an empty browser listing during scheduled service maintenance does not prove that your files or ports are broken.
A practical stopping rule
Keep the server in a known state: one saved configuration, one documented launch command, logging enabled, and a vanilla test that can be repeated. Once the process stays running and local connectivity succeeds, change only one external variable at a time—first LAN reachability, then public forwarding, then BattlEye filtering, and finally mods. That sequence preserves a working reference and makes the next failure attributable to the last change.
