D&D 2024 Essentials Buying Guide: Which Books and Dice Do New Players Need?

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a brand-new group, buy the Dungeons & Dragons Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set. It is built for two to four players and a Dungeon Master, includes guided play and prebuilt characters, and supplies an 11-die polyhedral set, maps, and tokens. A player joining a campaign that is already running should start with the 2024 Player’s Handbook. A Dungeon Master should add the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide; the 2024 Monster Manual is a useful creature reference but is not a prerequisite for a player who is not running encounters.

If you are only testing the game, the 2024 Free Rules on D&D Beyond provide 12 base classes, 12 subclasses, 16 feats, 48 monsters, and 333 spells, while the official toolset allows up to six free characters. You can therefore learn the basic game before buying anything.

Choose your starting path

The right first purchase depends on whether you are forming a new table, joining an established one, or deciding whether D&D is for you. These routes solve different problems rather than competing as identical versions of the game.

Starting situation Best first purchase Why it fits What it does not replace
A completely new group with no experienced DM Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set Guided play, prebuilt characters, maps, tokens, and dice reduce setup before the first session. A full library of player options or an open-ended campaign reference shelf.
One player joining an existing 2024 campaign 2024 Player’s Handbook It is the player-facing core rulebook for rules and character options. The DM’s adventure material, encounter preparation, and creature reference.
A prospective player who wants to spend nothing first 2024 Free Rules on D&D Beyond It supports learning the core loop and creating a legal starting character at no cost. The complete option range and a physical book.
A person running a campaign Starter Set or adventure product, then 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide The adventure gets play moving; the DMG adds procedures and advice for running it. A complete bestiary, which is the role of the Monster Manual.

Do not buy all three core books simply because they are sold as a set. The Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and Monster Manual answer different questions. Your role at the table should determine the order.

What the 2024 core books actually do

2024 Player’s Handbook: the player’s main reference

The 2024 Player’s Handbook contains the rules for playing and is the first full book a player needs when a campaign is already organized. It is the place to look when you are choosing a class, building a character, selecting a subclass or feat, understanding equipment, or checking how a player-controlled ability works.

A group can share one copy, but individual access is more convenient during character creation and play. If your DM supplies pregenerated characters and limits choices for a short introductory adventure, you can postpone the purchase. For a continuing campaign in the 2024 rules, the handbook is the durable player reference rather than an optional luxury.

2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide: tools for the person running the table

The 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide is aimed at the DM. Its official description covers advice and tools for all three pillars of play: exploration, social interaction, and combat. That means it helps the person who adjudicates situations, prepares scenes, handles pacing, and turns the rules into an evening of play.

It is not required for someone who is only controlling a character. A new DM can begin with a starter set or a published adventure and add the DMG when they need broader guidance, procedures, or campaign-building tools. Buying it before an adventure can make sense if the DM enjoys preparation and wants the reference immediately; it is not a condition for opening a starter adventure.

2024 Monster Manual: a DM-facing creature reference

The 2024 Monster Manual supplies creature material for the DM. It becomes valuable as a campaign moves beyond the monsters included with its adventure or as the DM wants a wider range of encounter choices.

A player does not need the Monster Manual to make a character, understand their turn, or participate in combat. Purchasing it for every player is therefore inefficient unless those players also rotate into the DM role. Treat it as an expansion of the DM’s reference shelf, not as an entry ticket to the game.

Why the Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set is the cleanest first buy

The official product page describes Heroes of the Borderlands as a first step into D&D. It is designed for two to four players plus a Dungeon Master, and its guided play and prebuilt characters remove several decisions that otherwise delay a first session. The official contents article lists maps, tokens, and 11 polyhedral dice: one d4, four d6s, one d8, one d10, one d12, two d20s, and one percentile die.

This combination matters because a new group usually has four setup jobs at once: learn the turn structure, make characters, assemble an adventure, and find dice. The starter set handles enough of each job that the group can concentrate on describing actions and resolving them. Justice Ramin Arman, managing game designer, summarized the design goal as: “Overall, we aimed to build a smooth onboarding ramp—a true Starter Set—tuned for the 2024 rules revision.”

When this path is the best fit

  • No one at the table has run D&D before.
  • The group wants a contained first adventure rather than an open-ended campaign immediately.
  • Players prefer to start with ready-made characters.
  • You want physical play materials and do not already own dice, maps, or tokens.
  • You want to minimize the number of separate purchases before session one.

What to check before opening the box

  1. Confirm that one person is willing to be the Dungeon Master; the set assumes that role.
  2. Count the players against the stated two-to-four-player range.
  3. Decide whether everyone will use the prebuilt characters for the introductory sessions.
  4. Separate the dice, maps, and tokens so they are ready when the first scene begins.
  5. Agree on a session length and a date before attempting optional character customization.

The set is a starting ramp, not a promise that every future campaign will use the same adventure or character options. Once the group knows it wants a longer campaign, add books according to the role each person takes.

How many dice do you really need?

D&D uses a family of polyhedral dice identified by the number of sides: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. A second d10 is commonly used as a percentile die, with one die representing tens and the other ones. The notation “2d6,” for example, means roll two six-sided dice and add them.

The exact starter-set allocation

Die Quantity in the listed set Typical job
d4 1 Small weapon or effect damage and some table measurements.
d6 4 Common weapon damage, healing, and multiple-die rolls.
d8 1 Weapon damage and class features that use an eight-sided die.
d10 1 Damage or a ten-sided result.
d12 1 Heavy-weapon damage and other twelve-sided results.
d20 2 Attack rolls, ability checks, saving throws, and many contested rolls.
Percentile die 1 A tens die used with a d10 for a d100 result.

Those quantities are the contents specified for Heroes of the Borderlands by D&D Beyond in 2025. One complete set can support a first session, particularly when the adventure is using the included characters and materials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to buy more sets

Additional dice are a convenience, not a rules requirement. If everyone plays in person, a personal set prevents players from passing dice around and makes simultaneous rolls quicker. A DM may also appreciate extra d20s and d6s when several creatures act at once. Buy more only after you know how your group plays; a single set is enough to learn the game.

For remote play, a digital roller can replace physical dice. For a hybrid table, keep at least one physical set available so a player is not blocked by a device, connection, or software problem.

Can you play the 2024 rules for free?

Yes. D&D Beyond’s 2024 Free Rules include 12 base classes, 12 subclasses, 16 feats, 48 monsters, and 333 spells. That is enough to learn the basic resolution loop, create a supported character, and try a short adventure without buying a physical rulebook.

The official toolset also says users can create and maintain six characters for free. That allowance is useful for experimenting with different classes or maintaining a backup character, but it does not turn the free rules into the complete contents of the Player’s Handbook. Options outside the free selection still require access from the relevant book or digital product.

A low-risk free-start procedure

  1. Open the 2024 Free Rules and read the sections explaining ability checks, attack rolls, saving throws, movement, and actions.
  2. Create one character using only the options included in the free rules.
  3. Use the character builder to record the character digitally, or copy the information onto a paper sheet.
  4. Play a short session with a DM who is using the same 2024 rules revision.
  5. Buy the Player’s Handbook only if you want broader options, a permanent physical reference, or continued access to material outside the free selection.

This route is especially sensible when a group is still deciding whether schedules, play style, or the DM role will work. It avoids buying three books before anyone has rolled a first check.

What a new Dungeon Master should buy

The practical order is an adventure or starter set first, the Dungeon Master’s Guide next, and the Monster Manual as the campaign’s creature needs expand. The order is about getting a table running, not about ranking the books by quality.

First: an adventure framework

A starter set provides a bounded beginning, while another adventure product may provide a different format or length. Choose one before collecting reference books so the DM knows what kind of preparation the campaign needs. Heroes of the Borderlands is the most direct fit when the entire group is new because its guided play and prebuilt characters reduce preparation.

Second: the Dungeon Master’s Guide

Add the 2024 DMG when the DM wants help with exploration, social interaction, combat procedures, or campaign tools that go beyond the introductory material. It is also useful when the DM is creating locations and encounters instead of following a contained adventure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Third: the Monster Manual

Buy the 2024 Monster Manual when the DM needs a broader creature reference than the current adventure supplies. If the campaign remains inside a starter adventure and the DM is satisfied with its included encounters, the Monster Manual can wait.

What the DM does not need on day one

  • A separate rulebook for every player.
  • A large dice collection before the group has played once.
  • The Monster Manual solely because it is one of the three core books.
  • Custom miniatures or terrain when the adventure already supplies maps and tokens.
  • Every optional digital add-on before the table has chosen physical or digital play.

Physical versus digital play

Groups that use D&D Beyond’s tools can choose a digital-first route. The official digital starter guide says the Heroes of the Borderlands Digital Adventure Pack includes pre-filled digital character sheets, 19 quickplay maps with monster tokens, and a digital dice set. Those contents address the same early friction points as the physical box while fitting a screen-based table.

Choose physical materials when

  • Your group enjoys handling character sheets, dice, maps, and tokens at the table.
  • Internet access or device availability is uncertain.
  • You want one shared box that can move between players.
  • Several players are learning and benefit from seeing the physical dice and map.

Choose the digital pack when

  • The group already plays online or expects to use D&D Beyond for character management.
  • Pre-filled digital sheets and quickplay maps are more useful than physical components.
  • You want digital dice and tokens in the same workspace as the character sheets.
  • Players live in different locations.

Physical and digital products can change in price, regional availability, and bundle contents. Check the current product listing for your region at the time of purchase rather than assuming that a physical box and a digital pack include identical material.

Buying plans for common player situations

Situation: four friends have never played

Start with Heroes of the Borderlands. Assign one person as DM, use the prebuilt characters, and play the guided material before making extra purchases. The included 11-die set is enough to begin; buy additional sets only if sharing dice slows the table.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Situation: you are joining an established campaign

Ask the DM which 2024 options the campaign allows and whether a character sheet or dice is supplied. If the campaign uses the complete 2024 rules, purchase the Player’s Handbook first. Do not buy the DMG or Monster Manual unless you also intend to run games.

Situation: you want to test D&D alone

Use the 2024 Free Rules and create one of the supported characters. Read the core procedures, join a short introductory session, and decide afterward whether the wider Player’s Handbook options justify a purchase.

Situation: you are an experienced role-player but a new DM

A starter adventure can shorten preparation even if you understand tabletop games already. Add the DMG when you begin improvising or building your own campaign, and add the Monster Manual when the adventure’s creature selection no longer covers your plans.

Situation: the group wants a long campaign immediately

Have the DM choose the adventure framework and establish which version of the rules is in use. Players can begin with the Player’s Handbook, while the DM acquires the DMG and the creature reference in the order that preparation demands. Avoid mixing 2014 and 2024 assumptions without an explicit house rule.

Prepare the first session without overspending

  1. Confirm roles. Identify the DM and the players before buying books intended for different jobs.
  2. Choose one rules source. Use either the 2024 Free Rules, the starter material, or the 2024 core books as the table’s baseline.
  3. Pick the play format. Decide whether the session will use physical components, digital tools, or a mixture.
  4. Set up characters. Use prebuilt characters for the starter adventure or create characters from the permitted 2024 options.
  5. Gather resolution tools. Place the dice where everyone can reach them, or verify that the digital roller works before the session.
  6. Explain the core loop. Players describe an action; the DM decides whether a roll is needed; the relevant die and modifier determine the outcome; the DM narrates the result.
  7. Start with a short goal. A single objective gives new players a clear reason to make decisions without requiring them to understand every rule.
  8. Review after play. Only then decide whether the next purchase should be a Player’s Handbook, DMG, Monster Manual, extra dice, or digital material.

Common purchasing mistakes and how to avoid them

Buying the Monster Manual as a player

The Monster Manual is for creature material used by the DM. If you are not running encounters, put that money toward the Player’s Handbook or dice instead.

Assuming every player needs every core book

Each core book has a distinct role. One DMG and one Monster Manual can serve a table, while players primarily need access to the Player’s Handbook or the free rules permitted by the campaign.

Buying dice before checking the starter contents

Heroes of the Borderlands already lists 11 polyhedral dice. Count what you own and what the box supplies before ordering multiple sets.

Mixing digital and physical purchases without a plan

A digital pack may be ideal for an online group, but it does not automatically provide a physical book or physical dice. Decide whether your table needs screens, paper, or both.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting free rules to contain every option

The 2024 Free Rules are broad enough to learn the game but intentionally limited compared with the full Player’s Handbook. Check whether a desired class, subclass, feat, or spell is included before designing a character around it.

Ignoring the DM’s preferred rules revision

Ask which edition and character options the campaign uses. The 2024 books and free rules are designed for the 2024 revision; a table using another rules baseline may handle character creation differently.

How to decide what to buy next

After one or two sessions, use the problem you actually encountered as the buying signal.

Problem at the table Most relevant next purchase Reason
Players need more character choices or a permanent player reference. 2024 Player’s Handbook It expands player-facing rules and options.
The DM is improvising exploration, social scenes, or combat procedures. 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide It provides advice and tools across those three pillars.
The DM has exhausted the adventure’s creature selection. 2024 Monster Manual It adds a dedicated creature reference.
Players are waiting for dice to be passed around. Additional polyhedral dice sets More sets improve speed and ownership but do not change the rules.
The group is online or wants integrated digital sheets and maps. Heroes of the Borderlands Digital Adventure Pack It includes pre-filled sheets, 19 quickplay maps with monster tokens, and digital dice.

This sequence keeps purchases tied to an observed need. It also prevents a new group from paying for reference material that may never be used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for a 2024 D&D beginner

Buy Heroes of the Borderlands for a new group that needs the fastest route to a first session. Buy the 2024 Player’s Handbook when you are a player joining an existing campaign. Buy the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide when you are the person running the game, and add the 2024 Monster Manual only when you need its creature reference. Start with the 2024 Free Rules if you want to try D&D at no cost. One complete polyhedral set is enough to begin; extra dice are a convenience for regular in-person play.
