When did the 2024 Monster Manual come out?
The global release date was February 18, 2025, according to the D&D release calendar. The book is often called the 2024 Monster Manual because it belongs to the revised fifth-edition rules launch, but it was released in 2025. D&D Beyond’s current product page uses the name “Monster Manual (5.5e)”.

When was early access, and who could get it?
Early access began February 4, 2025, but the physical and digital offers were distinct.
- Local game stores: Wizards of the Coast announced early sales at eligible stores in the United States and Canada, including Wizards Play Network stores and other core hobby retailers. The offer covered purchases in-store or in-person pickup; online sales and shipped orders were excluded. See the local game store early-access announcement.
- D&D Beyond: Its release-support thread identifies February 4, 2025 as the digital early-access release and notes that the 2024 Free Rules were updated at the same time.
These dates are historical, not current preorder or early-access offers. If a digital book you are entitled to does not appear in your account, D&D Beyond’s support post recommends syncing entitlements.

What changed in the new Monster Manual?
D&D Beyond describes the book as a substantial refresh of its monster collection, presentation, and Dungeon Master tools. Its feature overview says the manual contains over 500 monsters, including more than 85 brand-new creatures, and over 40 humanoid NPC stat blocks. Those are the publisher’s figures.
More usable monster entries
Entries add Habitat and Treasure information where applicable, and some stat blocks identify Gear that characters may recover or use. The book includes variants of familiar creatures and high-level threats, alongside revised Legendary Actions. NPC stat blocks are intended to represent humanoids across different species.

Stat blocks with quick-reference details
D&D Beyond’s stat-block preview describes several presentation changes: Initiative modifier and score are explicit; ability scores, modifiers, and saving throw bonuses appear in a table; and damage and condition protections are grouped under Immunity. Related actions are consolidated, and some monster spells appear as bonus actions or reactions. Instructions use clearer up-front language and Success/Failure outcomes.
Reorganized for lookup and play
Creatures are arranged alphabetically, with variants grouped together. The book also includes lists by habitat, creature type, and Challenge Rating, plus a revised “How to Use a Monster” chapter and a “Running a Monster” section for Dungeon Masters.

Is the 2025 Monster Manual compatible with 2014 D&D?
D&D Beyond’s March 2, 2026 note says that “5.5e” distinguishes the updated fifth-edition rules from the 2014 “5e” material. The naming change was for clarity: it did not change rules, purchases, or gameplay, and both versions remain supported and compatible. The label therefore identifies the rules version, not a separate edition unrelated to fifth edition.
